- Rotating our six heritage hogs to a new pasture paddock. It helps them get exercise, stay happy, and lets them do what they love most, to forage and root. We move two sections of electric netting around their central pen after it is rooted up. By the time we have gone in a rotation (about 4 weeks), they are back on the original paddock and it has regrown. They are all crosses of Red Wattle: Large black x Red Wattle, Gloucester Old Spot x Red Wattle, and Yorkshire x Red Wattle.

Good day everyone. It's called a "wattle". It's some sort of vestigial skin and fat peculiar to that Red Wattle heritage breed.

Thanks for the comment. It's an electric fence powered by a solar charger. It shocks pretty hard (I tried it once barefoot and soaking wet just to see) and the curious pigs only have to touch it with their nose one time to get the idea. However, they absolutely could just trample it down and charge through it if they really wanted to, but they don't know that. It's a psychological barrier, and it works great for movable or semi-permanent fencing. If the paddocks were going to stay there permanently, I think non-electric hard fencing would be best.
@@davidstonner Vietnam has not done this yet, I just see in the videos of you and other countries, it's very convenient for work.

What if you want to do this but have tons of poison Hemlock? HOw do you get rid of it without hurting the pigs?
I honestly don't know. I'd do some research on spraying a broadleaf herbicide, or spot spray with an organic herbicide in the pasture to clear it up for a year before the pigs go on the pasture. Not ideal to be spraying the fields, but it might be worth it in the short term to get rid of the poisonous stuff. See what your local Ag Extension office has for advice. Good luck!
@@davidstonner thank you! It's so bad here, that's all that grows, that and Wintercreeper vine. Lol its sad. I don't even know if we can get rid of it on 9 acres, it might be too difficult. But we'll see what happens.
@@Trakehner20 Check with your local Agriculture office or Soils Conservation office to see if they have any advice on controlled burns. That is a common landscape scale method in my area to suppress invasive plants while stimulating native warm season grasses and wildflowers to grow and choke out the undesirable plants. It will take a few years to come to full fruition, however it is very healthy for native plants as it mimics the natural wildfire effects that natives have adapted to over millennia, and that invasives haven't. It might be a way to try to reclaim an area as large as 9 acres rather than targeting the wintercreeper and hemlock individually.
@@davidstonner Hmm. That's actually a great idea. I don't think they allow burns arond here, because actually, there are some houses nearby. But its always worth a try! Thanks!

Pigs are better for forested areas especially if there is acron. Pastures are better for cattle and sheep.
