    Great Tutorial! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. One Tip for the gnarly 3D Gradient: You can link it to null objects in your scene and control the start and end of the gradient via the null objects. Here is how:
    1) Select XYZ pos of a Null-object
    2) Rightclick onto this xyz-selection and select "Xpressions/Set Driver"
    3) Select the "Start" parameter of your Gradient
    4) Rightclick onto this selection and select "Xpressions/Set Driven(absolute)"
    5) Set the "Space" Parameter of the Gradient (the one on the bottom) to World.
    Of course you have to do Step 1-4 also for the "End" Parameter of your gradient, but with another Null-object.

      That's great to hear, yeah a lot of the times trying the more complex way gets you worse results! Check out my previous skin tutorial where I show another method which sometimes works even better. It involves the Mix Material, and the reason I didn't use it here is because if I had to use Mix materials on every part of the body I would end up with TENS of materials. That can be an Issue if you're working with several Daz models in your scene.

    • @NewPlastic

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hah yeah those Daz bridges don't really handle textures well - which is why I made this tutorial. You gotta do it yourself to get the best results!
      And yeah I Feel you about the skins, I think many skins suffer from too much SSS in the wrong areas and too glossy. I understand why tho, glossy stuff just looks so much better in render engines today - it's hard to make matte materials look as good. So fuck it, gloss it up! But with skin the glossyness is very specific, it's kinda shiny but kinda not. So difficult to make it - I still struggle even after knowing how to do it!
      And feel free to check out my hair tutorial!

    • @RomboutVersluijs
      @RomboutVersluijs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NewPlastic Yeah to get best result you need to work with reflection/specular map and roughness/glossiness map. They work together to mare a more realistic look.
      Well the Blender bridges does exoort everything to blender flawlessly. it sets up super nice rig. And soso material. But all maps are linked thats a plus.
      PS i found this thread with 2 people providing scripts which gathers all maps into a folder. A third person added an Alembic Exporter which also work nice

    @PkAkSeL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    oh, the video turned out to be very interesting!
    I have one question. Is this method suitable for working with most of the models from DAZ? Yes, I understand that some maps will have to be done manually, since not all models have, for example, a Normal map for the eyes

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Appreciate that comment!
      I use this method for all my models (I have worked with about 8 different ones, males and females, all colors, using default maps as well as Skin Builder).
      The biggest factor when it comes to customizing the workflow is the skin color - different skin colors will require different color corrections, and also different color/density for SSS.
      Beyond that, each model has it's own approach to bump maps/normal maps so some I have to tone down more than others.
      I also found myself manually adding color variation on the Albedo maps if I find the maps to be too bland or too weird (one male model I have, Erik, has very dark red hue around his eyes and I made a map where I toned it down in Photoshop).
      As far as eyes go, I feel like unless you go extremely close up to the eyes, I noticed that bump/normals maps on them barely make a difference.
      So yeah the method is pretty much the same, but the settings definitely change. That's why I said in the last one it's all knowing the overall method and then going with your eyes and seeing the difference as it depends on your maps, your model and your lighting. That's also why I don't necessarily tell you exactly what numbers I put in, but I try to explain how I think about each move I make.

    • @PkAkSeL
      @PkAkSeL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NewPlastic Yes, I realized that when I watched your video.

    Amazing! would love the same tutorial for Daz caracters but for white skin, or does the previous one work too? because you used a 3D scan

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The workflow would be sort of the same, it depends on the maps the model provides for you. The biggest difference would be in the color correction for the skin and the Transmission strength (and sometimes density/color of SSS). Darker albedo channels have more pronounced Transmission so with lighter skins you want to go stronger on the Transission channel (which means brighter colors/higher values plugged into the Transmission node)

      Yes! Correct scaling is super important. You wanna use real-life scale (so about 180cm height, or any height you want that's realistic).
      The easiest way is to place a "Figure" model from the Primitive menu (When you press the Cube, you can see the Figure in that menu). That figure is by default 180cm tall, which is the average human size. If you scale your imported model to be about the size of that figure you'll be good!

    these are epic tutorials, my guy just a quick 1. When your exporting from Daz to cinema4d is their a method that you use? like, do you take the images into photoshop or another software to adjust any of the image contrast or dial down the edges at all as you seem to get such crisp seams and there never seems to be a fault as I cannot import it from Daz to cinema4d cause it's not supported with r23... I have these strange artifacts and edges that never seem to join together as seamless as yours. I cannot progress with the characters any further. Please do you know any resolve for this? is their some setting that I should be using to prevent this?

      Thanks again buddy!
      So in the beginning of the tutorial I show my export settings from Daz to OBJ. Then I just import it to C4D. Are you trying to export an animation or a still pose?
      As for photoshop, I don't touch up the textures in photoshop, unless, there's something specific that I want to do like add tattoos or alter specific parts of the skin.
      Do the seam happen on the edges of the texture maps? Or are they all ripped apart randomly across the model?

    I notice that there are some seam lines between different body part, like the line between face and torso. But when I only use the diffuse/specular maps from daz, without normal/randomwalk/micro normal that kind of stuffs, they are seamless. How can you fix this issue?

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah there are different reasons for that.
      First, a lot of the times there's one different parameter between the two textures that makes the seam apparent. So it's important to make sure everything is absolutely identical - the Gamma on spec/roughness maps, the coating layer settings, etc. It's easy to miss the small stuff when there's so many settings to worry about.
      Second, the Micro-Normal map will spread differently since the UV maps are different. They stretch more on the torso textures. Try turning off the Micro-Normal only and see if it helps. If it does, try scaling down the micro=normals on the torso until they match.
      Third, usually that part is covered with hair, which is why I didn't worry about it in the tutorial. That's probably the easiest way to high that seam :) I've done 2 hair tutorials for afro-textured hair that you're welcome to check out!

      @@NewPlastic I fixed it by turning bump map way down.I tried the normal/micro normal way, didn't work. I still don't know why, cuz my tex balls are directly duplicated from the orignal one. MOST importantly, your method of adding coating layers with micro-normal is GENIUS!! I don't want to lose that levelof details. Your DAZ-C4D texture ball setting is perfect! I searched lots of tutorials before, those methods always look unnatural, especially eyes. Hope you post more about DAZ - C4D content! Your're the BEST!

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deswzc4091 Yeah I think I know what you're talking about and that's just an issue with the some texture maps that come with the model - but it only really shows in closeups no?
      And thanks! Yeah I was excited when I discovered it as well, the coating layer really adds a lot of specular realism and the micro normals add more subtle details that the texture maps dont hold.
      And yeah I did end up adding a little bit of hair to the cloth, just to go with the whole realism vibes in this video! :)

    Doesnt that engine have an issue using a bump and a normal map together? I remember some other engine i used, using them both they worked against each other. I hardly to never use regular bump since there is just not enough info for the engine to show the effect properly

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually no they work really well together! Normal maps will always be better and more efficient so they're better for more detailed texture, and bump can just be an extra layer of generic details. Never enough details!

    How did you get the bump, normal, glossy maps out of day studio as it doesn't give you any but the body maps ?.... do you import it to photoshop or another software and generate them or make them your self?.

    • @NewPlastic
      @NewPlastic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, so good quality models will have all those maps stored, but they won't export with the obj. You'll need to manually find them and I show how to do that at 03:14 in this video.
      But if your model doesn't have those maps, then yeah you can create them yourself - Travis Davids has a great tutorial on how to do that. Here's a link th-cam.com/video/U1xN9zvlC3Q/w-d-xo.html
