Man, we all wanted one as kids! 💯💯 Even today, my kids go crazy when they see an fbody Firebird! They’re like, does that one have the turbo boost button? 😆🙌 Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Thanks for highlighting these cars. The "mullet machine" stench is finally starting to fade over the last few years and theyre finally getting the recognition they deserve as a mod-friendly, capable, well-handling platform that still won't completely break the bank
Love every minute of your video from start to finish, hope you can talk in the future about the Firebird WS6 2002, thank you and keep up the good work!
I had a 1990 5.0 Trans Am and loved every bit of it. Great aerodynamics, great prices still, great look (with headlights down lol) and the overall legacy. Plus it always looks like it's doing 100mph at a standstill in any vehicle configuration.
Smoky and the Bandit has gotten even more popular in the past 10 years, that’s why the 2nd Gen Firebirds prices have popped 💯💪 And yesss, I myself sometimes spend too much time looking up 78’s with huge screening chickens on the hood! 🤫🤫 Mannn! If he took a Firebird 400 to 160mph… he wasn’t drunk, he was blasted into outer space! 🚀😆
I gave up on my '88 replica about four years ago. Just two days before I came into some money. I miss it, and I wouldve done a TT 1600hp sb2 small block build on it. Had a '91 in high school too. The cars with the ground effects needed loads of bodywork if you converted them.
Great car to have in Highschool!! 🙌🙌 I agree, it is much more work to do a replica on the newer cars because off all the extra bodywork needed….especially for a black car. You’ve got to do that small block build one day! 🚀🚀👊👊 Two Many Mopars thanks for watching!🔥🔥
I am setting out to buy an '88 myself, 'cause it'd be sweet to have a car the same age as me. I'm gonna see about IRS and subframe upgrades to begin with, since I already have an LT1 with Dart heads and a hotcam to stick in it, before I work the interior a little. Gonna keep the plush but add black anodized and stainless steel details and stuff. However... What I really want to do is see if I can put the K48 motor in it, when that comes out. That would make it a real legit front-mid engine car. And what's more, with the sheer amount of space up front you end up with along with maybe a bit of forward axle alignment as part of putting in the new suspension, perhaps there would be some possibility of even putting a forward diff there. How cool would that be? AWD front-mid on a 3rd gen... Is this heresy, or...?
@@Sakhmeov No, that would be insane! Loads of work. Theres an IRS out there thats rated for 700hp. Probably one youve already seen. Ill have to google the K48. -Ah the new Honda racing V8. Rob Dahm got his hands on the engine I would dream of getting into a car. A 12 rotor
@@Justtwodangmany Seen that one, yes. But whatever goes down, you won't get me to approve of wankels. They're just not made to work. Saying as a guy who's spent many years working as a pump mechanic and with a good deal of mech work... And yeah, I know it'd be a lot of work. That's life. I would probably have to start off from a whole subframe and steering kit for the 2nd gen and then relocate the coils off-center, then make up the front diff and joint solution myself...
Kudos: At 7:05, you showed the Accel Lingenfelter Superrram intake (middle of photo). That was the best intake assembly for the L98 engines. When installed, the engine came alive by revving and producing power up to 7,000 rpm; it was a game changer by adding 30-40 hp, while not sacrificing power or torque in lower rpm range.
@@rudimerm7686 sad they are no longer produced! I have a high revving 383 with TPIS miniram, which is great for top end power, but I always felt the super ram was the best street intake. Lids were a little finicky though. EDIT: the intake comparison that image is from was a Richard Holdener vid I believe
I had a 1983 with cross-fire (cease fire?) fuel injection. It was a disaster! Incredibly beautiful (and no, I did not ever have a mullet!), but was impossible to keep in tune. Traded it for a 1985 version and it seemed like it was built by different company. That one was great. Interesting to learn about the 1991 upgrades. I have always loved the styling of these.
Yes, the cross-fire is definitely more maintenance! GM made lots of little improvement’s, but only advertised the HP improvements. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
I've had 3 third gen Firebirds over 20 years (91 and 92s,) This review is right on point! I was attracted becausethe body was very reminiscent of 1970's muscle cars,(and b/c of Knight Rider) Lots of limitations living what you can do with it in CA, so LS swaps are tricky. You have to upgrade many other things as he says in the video. The 5.0 is nice without changes and should be left as is. 5.7's usually have more options like power windows etc. The steering is mushy and sloppy and needs upgrading as he says! I dyno-matted one after upgrading the engine, and It became so slow LOL!
Great video! I had an 89' Trans Am 5spd for 20 years. it was in totally mont condition, last summer a kid turned across my lane without looking and totalled it. I still miss that car, It felt like when the horse died in the never ending stories. I still have a 78' bandit but truth told, the third gen was my favourite.
Ohh man! Things like that really makes you appreciate life even more. Sounds like you’ve still got a great one, I’ll have a Bandit one day…. And Yesss, with the bird on the hood! 🚀🚀👊 Thanks for watching brother! 🔥🔥
Great channel. In 2016, I had a chance to buy a low mileage (21k miles) 1989 TTA for 20k. I had no idea prices would inflate ridiculously during/after the pandemic and thought a deal like that would come around again. Sadly, those days are long gone; everything is inflated.
@@HernanSpeedAgreed. I have a friend who had been buying and selling many different generation Firebird Trans-am cars. I already knew their prices were going up. Still glad to have my original 89 GTA. Awesome video and information
In short, HELL YES you should get one. It's damn true, a built 5.7 can make the car fly. Remember to use quality parts though. The cheap Chinesium stuff will leave you stranded. Gonna look into that wonderbar and a new rag joint. I simply don't trust my 83 on the highway anymore. I can't get the alignment straight. The whole suspension is new and it's a major improvement. If only the wheel was centered. Don't worry if it needs work, unless you want a showpiece, just get it and drive it and enjoy it. These cars can be daily drivers. Been doing it every summer for 12 years now. The first time you get behind the wheel of one, get it on the highway and go, you will know it was worth every penny.
I’ve heard of the Astro van steering shaft, it’s a great mod! 💯 Subframes also make a huge difference! 👊👊 The adhesives tie in all the metal parts that are sandwiched together on F Bodies, it made them drum tight. Thanks for watching man! 🔥🔥
In terms of raw power, the 1998-2002 LS1 cars are the best option in my opinion. However, if you get one of those cars and plan on driving it hard, I recommend doing a transmission upgrade. The 4L60E is better suited in applications that do not make extreme power. It was not built to handle 325 horsepower and 340 pounds of torque the LS1 generates. It sucks GM paired such a powerful engine with a weak transmission. As for the 3rd gen cars, don't buy anything older than 1988 unless you are a serious collector who wants a 1982 Trans Am not for power but for the significance of it being the first year of the 3rd gen. Of course, the best thing to do with a 3rd gen Trans Am is convert it into a KITT replica.
Solid advice. GM changed the game with the LS, it’s still considered the best engine out there! 💯💯 It’s more than the power advantage, it’s also easier to service and keep it running. That being said, I’ve got a soft spot for L98’s.
LT1s are not bad either, I think would have them a bad reputation was the placement of the Opti spark system, but outside of that I never heard about those engines being unreliable or anything. But I do agree they are more a more cramped and complicated engine than the LS, but still legendary.
Cool video! I have my 1987 TransAm for 20 years now and I'm still not bored :) People who put sound dampen stuff in their car are crazy, I pulled it all out including the carpet! Ok that was because of waterleaks but haven't put it back in since.
Great video! Wish I saw this before I bought my 87 Formula, I would have held out for a 91. One thing I did learn is the 700R4 transmission was upgraded in 87 so I got lucky there. I put crate 350 with 310/350lbs in there and am having a blast. Suspension is next. Will check out that wonderbar and subscribed to your channel.
The 87’s styling is on point! 🙌🙌 Sounds like your taking it to the next level! Yes, that transmission takes a pounding, it has a slingshot effect on the upshifts from the factory….no shift kit needed. Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
I was introduced to the Pontiac Trans am watching Knight Rider. I am a huge fan of the show and would love a KITT replica .Can you get a 2.5 litre Trans am? What engine sizes did this car become available in to buy? Thanks for a great video.
The Trans Am was a package on the existing Firebird, they came with V8’s. So, you don’t need the Trans Am model to build a KITT, all you need a a standard Firebird(in nice condition). Most Firebirds actually came with V6 2.5, they get great gas mileage! They’re lots of replicas with this motor, they’re mainly show cars…and they get lots of looks! 🚀🚀🚀 So, you can build your KITT replica out of any year Firebird as long as it’s 82-92 years 👊👊 But if you want power, always look for the V8’s 🚀🚀 Brian thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Yes!! That’s a great year! 🙌🙌 Not many people know, and there’s lots of conflicting info… so it’s better to get the info directly from the source. Isaac thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
i just bought an 85 firebird v8 5.0 for $2250 about a month and a half ago, got it running last night. it sat for about 15 years and all it needed was a clean fuel tank/lines, and new rubber fuel lines. it got serviced right before it sat so oil was perfect and stiff like that, im still gonna drain and refill the liquids. alot of cosmetic work but even with the interior stripped and the paint in poor shape it still looks so classic. its my first car and id say i lucked out
Congrats man! 🔥🔥 Incredible deal! Nothing more satisfying than working on your own car, especially when it’s your first!! 💪💪 Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
goddamn where are you going to find a deal like that? i can only ever find rust bucket 3rd gens for anything under 3k dollars where i live err well, either rust buckets or some guys failed project car with a stripped interior, matte black base paint, ripped out wiring and a half torn apart engine
@@imcrow6674 lol dude yeah! that was the biggest thing was finding absolute garbage for over three years, I wasn't in a big rush cuz I didn't have my license yet. but when I found this, I asked why it was so cheap for being in such amazing condition, and he said he just wanted it to go to someone that would put it back on the road, cuz he kept getting offers of people stripping it for parts, but the car was way to complete to destroy
@@knightmare47 with marketplace being so shit where i am, i think imma just go drive down to this guy off the highway and offer what i can for this 92 firebird thats been sitting outside for atleast ~15 years now. still looks fine externally anyways, always passed by it as a kid going to town marketplace is so shit for tryina find used cars at a decent price, good on you for actually finding a nice car in that lol. 5 years of browsing it off and on, ive maybe found ~3 decent deals (all at times i was broke lol)
@@imcrow6674 lol yeah, you gotta play the long game with marketplace and offer-up and stuff, I got really lucky with my car, what your looking at sounds like the condition I found my car in, it's a lot of plastic that is shot but with yours being newer it might be better. the other thing I had was my uncle who knows these car back to front so he went with me when I checked my car out the first time. but dude good luck! 3rd gens are so fun to work on
89 TTA does not have the GNX motor or even the GN motor. It has different heads for hood clearance aside from other mods. Yes it is the fastest production car for that year. I did not know the 91-92 cars had the structure adhesive. That is good to know. The Early 82-84 cars were all over the place, performance wise. But, when they ran right. They were rockets. Weighing in at 2900lbs !!!
Correct, several mods were made to make the GNX engine fit… it loves BOOST! 🚀🚀 This generation of F-bodies are my favorite! 🙌🙌 Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊
You honestly should create a video on the 4th Generation F-body Firebirds that really looked like a rocket or a spaceship on 4 wheels. Very radical designs and the last old school muscle car feeling vehicles ever.
My first car was a 92 Firebird. I love that car! But as a 16-year-old kid I couldn't drive worth a s***. So I wrecked at about three different times. The third time I couldn't afford to rebuild it and it's at my mom's yard for years until finally one day I couldn't look at it anymore that way and I had somebody come and take it to the scrap yard. I regret that all the time! It belonged to my dad he bought it for me but he died in 95 before he could give it to me.
I love the look and style of the third gen cars and always wanted one but recently went and looked at an 88 GTA and to my surprise when getting into it I felt cramped, being 6ft4 in those cars dosnt work, had to practically slouch down so the top of my head didnt hit the roof and not enough leg room, now looking at fourth gen TA but they are awsome cars and icons of a bygone era
6ft4! Thats a great problem to have! 💪💪 Taking the t-tops off solves many problems 🚀🚀 Take your time, the right one is out there waiting for you! Thanks for watching brother 👊
@@sws5833 I'm in the same boat! I've owned 2, I'm also 6'4". I can't wear a helmet in mine for any length of time without neck cramps. The articulated bucket seats in my current car are better than the standard cloth seats in my 89 formula. You can replace the seat rails with ones from a fiero to lower the seat height a bit!
I love the sound of a header 350 Trans am gts headers pipe 3 inch cat back It's insane loud as fuck.i love the sound and a have a Holly stealth ram intake and a cam upgrade and have a foged 383 I built in my garage aluminum heads it'd a monster Burn out machine 😊
Just as you mentioned, I've always heard about changing the wonder bar, this is the first time I hear about change the rag joint, any recommendation for a rag joint for a Firebird T/A 1985, thanks!
Yes, the rag joint is most definitely a wear item…makes a huge difference! 🚀🚀 I’ve even heard of people bypassing it and putting a semi-solid one from a jeep (more road noise, but even better steering!)
you can take a l98 so far just like a lt 1 there both so close to a gen one 350 v8 but the LS came out and there is so much more you can do to a LS block and get so much HP those blocks can take way more then the old gen one 350 blocks there's some amazing things people have done with a 5.3 and 6.0 truck motors that are in the LS family and the bottom ends where stock to me its worth the swap if you take the l98 out of the car just put that money into a 5.3 and make it a 383 or whatever you'll have a better fuel injection system and ignition system also painless wiring works Maricals with motor swap but that's just my opinion the old firehawk had HP but not the 700 1000 I've heard some people getting out of there LS
I used to own a 86 TA with the 305 TPI. Here's something I found out that I wish I knew then. The 85 305 TPI was the sleeper car to have. It had a different camshaft and produced the most HP of all the 305's matching the 350. The next year they downgraded and changed the cam forever. Having said that the 91-92 were my favorite 3rd generation F-Body's.
@@HernanSpeed I had the L98 motor completely redone took all the emissions off with shorties and a custom exhaust system. Pushing about 400 at the rear wheel on a dyno.
I had one of these in 04. It was a rust bucket but ran like a dream. I wanted to rebuild it but as a young father my kids came first. I sold itand they wrecked it. Unfortunately, my Mustang GT I have now is a faster and nicer ride in more ways than one.
The interior black cloth seats are all mint factory not a Rip and the headliner fell down 2000 and I ripped it out and the dash pad just cracked 3 years ago and I put in a after market on from rock auto 250
Nice Video I Had Friend's that had Firebid TransAm and Irok Z Camaros Awesome Cars But I'm a Ford Person But I did use to Own a 1969 Pontiac GTO Conv't Automatic But Sold it Quick only had it for a few month. Nice Channel I Like how You explain everything ❤💖🚗❤❤🌝
Ugh... There is no evidence these ever made 350hp without the boost being increased. They did run pretty well in the GN but that doesn't necessarily take a lot of HP. Many cars today will run better 0-60 times than any of those turbo cars without advertising a large amount of hp. It also wasn't a gnx engine. It was a mix of parts, it had the crank for a 4.1l which had the same stroke but was said to be stronger. The heads were modeled after the fwd variant of the 3.8l because they were narrower and the GN heads had less space in the f-body engine bay. And the gnx had a specific turbo which I do not believe the tta had. They had the same DNA but not the same, the tta engine is considered to be slightly better than the GN because of cylinder head airflow and stronger crank but the GNX with its upgraded turbo was probably faster. As fast as the 5.7 tuned port engines, good luck getting them to rev. The intake runners are too long and the super ram manifolds that they sold in the 1990's aren't any longer in production. It would be better to retrofit a street ram type manifold and a more modern computer. Perhaps a mspnp or perhaps an LS factory computer if you don't mind changing the timing cover, timing set, adding a crank trigger and cam trigger (since the tuned port has a rear distributor you can run a cam trigger in the distributor hole which you will need something there to drive the oil pump) and buying an LS computer and harness and coil packs. These things and a camshaft would transform the car. But without a shorter manifold runner you will be rpm limited.
It made much more than the advertised HP. Car & Driver tested the automatic 20th anniversary doing 13.4 in the quarter, faster than the LS powered F-bodies which averaged 13.8 in the quarter ( I’ve got all the road tests). These numbers were even done with the power sapping slush-box, a proper manual would’ve easily gotten it into the 12’s 💯💯🔥🔥
Yes, colder will trip the freeze switch. Definitely depends on your location, here in sunny Miami… R134 knocks performance (especially cool down times). With R12, the cooling is perfection ❄️☃️ Thanks for watching man! 🔥🔥
Hey ! I live 1 hour from Miami, have a 92 Firebird vert. 1 of 64 color combo . garage kept. 60k miles. U should see it, believe me I feel it would make good content. I can send photo/video ?! 🙏🏽 📧

Well, 1st it was Smokey and the Bandit that really cemented the icon. Knight Rider was secondary. 2nd, there was a fourth gen, the third generation wasn't the last. 4th, you are a little off on cost of putting an LS into a 3rd gen. It's much easier and cost effective to put an LS engine in a 3rd gen than it is to put an LS into v6 4th gen. In a 3rd gen you're able to bypass the computer and then use a holley sniper. The ecm in 3rd gens is very basic. This will cost significantly less than $100k.
What’s really interesting is that smoky and the bandit has really gotten popular in the past 10 years, and prices reflect this. This wasn’t always the case, it’s great to see them go up 🙌 Knight Rider has always been replayed through out the years, all over the world without interruption… popularly never dipped. I’ve seen the best LS swaps coming out of Texas, with big Texas budget’s to match. You can easily spend over $100k+, but I understand that most are done for under $25k 💯👊 Jeffrey thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
the firehawk engine isnt an l98 anymore..it starts with a 4 bolt main 350 block, its redone completely, different heads, cam, induction etc so,no it isnt an l98.i have an l98 under my work bench(as well as an lb9 and a vortec 350) its a 2 bolt main block
I get what you mean, it’s so modded that it’s no longer an l98 🤔 I remember they used to have the catalog with all the parts you could order separately, it didn’t last long because one of the main objectives was passing emissions.. Looking back at old Hotrod magazines, these l98’s were completely redone…makes the Firehawks mods look ultra conservative. But again, it was more about passing emissions so that it could be sold throughout the dealership network(-and financed). It’s a beefed up L98, not a totally different engine.. - The LS is a totally different engine. Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Major cons to 3rd gen weak transmission rear axel very hard to dual exhaust. Pros easy to work on parts easily available other than exhaust transmission and axles are easily upgraded
idc what this guy says, if you want to do an LS swap, the 4th gen is the one you want. its got the current nostalgia clout shape and nobody's gonna call it a mullet car. 3rd gen is ready to be put out to thousand dollar-and-under used car pasture like everything else before the turn of the millennium.
I’d say that you get more bang for the buck on the 4th Gen cars…especially with the LS. Your going to spend more on a 3rd Gen, especially if in nice condition. The prices on the 3rd Gen’s have just started to go up, so if you want one….NOW IS THE TIME 💯💯
Depends. I don't drive mine every day, and I'm choosy about the roads I drive on, but I've been driving my 90 GTA with 2" eibachs for about 10 years now. Gotta watch the driveways, potholes, speed bumps, parking stops etc but it's doable
The 1990 is the last year of the pure 80’s styling, it changed in 1991 to a more aero look. Growing up in the 80’s, the early ones were my favorite! 🚀👊👊
It’s more like a big turbo strapped onto a V6 that like boost! 🚀🚀 Many people don’t know about it though, the V8’s are more popular because of the amazing sounds they make 💯💯
@HernanSpeed why is it a gta Trans am they built it in california I saw 4 more in my town 1990 2000 in my big town and they were all automatic Think about how rare the t5 is 32 million ppl live in canada and 360 million usa 861 t5 in usa 1988 I have never seen one factory ever Neither did my auto shop teacher He always wanted it I killed 8 tires on the street sideways 1 st gear long every day I also have the 9 bolt 3.41 rear end posi I broke the clutch disc 4 times
WHAT AND WEAR IS THE MONEY GOING TO COME FROM!!!!. TO MAKE THIS CAMERO INTO A T/A FIREBIRD???. IF ANYBODY BELIEVES WITH ALL THE OTHER CARS THEY''VE BEEN SHOWING, ANY OF THIS IS GOING TO EVER!!! HAPPEN!!! NEVER!!!... GO BUY AN OLD ONE!.

Great car to have in Highschool!! 🙌🙌 I agree, it is much more work to do a replica on the newer cars because off all the extra bodywork needed….especially for a black car. You’ve got to do that small block build one day! 🚀🚀👊👊
Two Many Mopars thanks for watching!🔥🔥
You know it!! 🚀🚀👊👊
I was attracted becausethe body was very reminiscent of 1970's muscle cars,(and b/c of Knight Rider)
Lots of limitations living what you can do with it in CA, so LS swaps are tricky.

Great channel. In 2016, I had a chance to buy a low mileage (21k miles) 1989 TTA for 20k. I had no idea prices would inflate ridiculously during/after the pandemic and thought a deal like that would come around again. Sadly, those days are long gone; everything is inflated.
Your right 💯💯 The prices still keep going up, especially for the nice ones. There just isn’t anything like it anymore, so they really stand out 🚀🚀
@@HernanSpeedAgreed. I have a friend who had been buying and selling many different generation Firebird Trans-am cars. I already knew their prices were going up. Still glad to have my original 89 GTA. Awesome video and information

You’ll find another, even better! 👊👊

Great video! Original, entertaining and very accurate too! Cheers from Alberta Canada.

Cool video! I have my 1987 TransAm for 20 years now and I'm still not bored :)
People who put sound dampen stuff in their car are crazy, I pulled it all out including the carpet! Ok that was because of waterleaks but haven't put it back in since.
Haha! Yess, gotta be careful with water leaks…it happens. I’ll always love these Trans Am’s! Nothing boring ever!! 💯👊👊
Such great advice dude! You definitely know what you're talking about!

So, you can build your KITT replica out of any year Firebird as long as it’s 82-92 years 👊👊 But if you want power, always look for the V8’s 🚀🚀

you can take a l98 so far just like a lt 1 there both so close to a gen one 350 v8 but the LS came out and there is so much more you can do to a LS block and get so much HP those blocks can take way more then the old gen one 350 blocks there's some amazing things people have done with a 5.3 and 6.0 truck motors that are in the LS family and the bottom ends where stock to me its worth the swap if you take the l98 out of the car just put that money into a 5.3 and make it a 383 or whatever you'll have a better fuel injection system and ignition system also painless wiring works Maricals with motor swap but that's just my opinion the old firehawk had HP but not the 700 1000 I've heard some people getting out of there LS
The LS series of engines are some of the best in the world, no doubt about it 💯💯. With a big enough budget, you can definitely get to 1,000hp + 🚀🚀🚀

You can easily spend over $100k+, but I understand that most are done for under $25k 💯👊

Yes. There is only one correct answer. Yes.

the firehawk engine isnt an l98 anymore..it starts with a 4 bolt main 350 block, its redone completely, different heads, cam, induction etc so,no it isnt an l98.i have an l98 under my work bench(as well as an lb9 and a vortec 350) its a 2 bolt main block
Where's the woo-woo thing?
Wonder bar? Right under the engine. Thanks for watching! 👊👊
Major cons to 3rd gen weak transmission rear axel very hard to dual exhaust. Pros easy to work on parts easily available other than exhaust transmission and axles are easily upgraded
Fact’s 💯💯👊
idc what this guy says, if you want to do an LS swap, the 4th gen is the one you want. its got the current nostalgia clout shape and nobody's gonna call it a mullet car.
The prices on the 3rd Gen’s have just started to go up, so if you want one….NOW IS THE TIME 💯💯
If you want to ruin it, lower it. Good luck finding OEM springs or even aftermarket stock springs to fix it. Also, don’t buy a lowered car.
I’ve driven lowered cars here in Miami, it’s un-doable. Pot holes & rain puddles will take you off the road in the first 5 mile’s.
Depends. I don't drive mine every day, and I'm choosy about the roads I drive on, but I've been driving my 90 GTA with 2" eibachs for about 10 years now. Gotta watch the driveways, potholes, speed bumps, parking stops etc but it's doable
3rd gen is the best looking.
but not 90 model, this 89 model.
The 1990 is the last year of the pure 80’s styling, it changed in 1991 to a more aero look. Growing up in the 80’s, the early ones were my favorite! 🚀👊👊
