The 9th Royal Rumble pay per view took place on January 21st 1996 in Fresno, California. The event was headlined with a WWF title match pitting champion Bret Hart vs The Undertaker. The winner of the Royal Rumble would likely face ‘Taker or Bret at WrestleMania XII, and this particular Royal Rumble may have felt a little predictable to some after Shawn Michaels received a huge push in the run-up to the event.
Shawn Michaels wanted to live out his dream and become WWF champion in 1996. In order to do that, he would have to overcome 29 other guys inside the annual Royal Rumble match. HBK was (in storyline) knocked out by an Owen Hart enziguri and fans rallied behind Shawn in the run-up to the rumble match. In order to win the rumble, HBK will have to step into the ring with guys like The Ringmaster, Diesel, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Yokozuna, the 1-2-3 Kid and The British Bulldog. This Royal Rumble also features the WWF debut of Vader.
Elsewhere on the show Razor Ramon defends his Intercontinental Championship against Goldust, The Smoking Gunns take on The Bodydonnas, and Ahmed Johnson wrestles Jeff Jarrett in the PPV opener.

@@SirPunzalot I respectfully disagree with you. At this point in 1996 Yoko was a bigger star than Fatu. Fatu didn’t surpass Yoko until he officially became Rikishi which wasn’t until 1999? He still had to become the Saltan or whatever after this come on now 🤣

This Rumble match is so fascinating. The Kliq was still rolling, you have yokozuna and Vader in there. Steve Austin's first ppv as the Ringmaster, glenn Jacobs in as Dr. Yankem, Jerry Lawler hiding under the ring, and not to mention them somehow thinking duke the dumpster needed the 30 spot which got no reaction lol

1996 is my favorite year of wrestling, as I became a fan on January 1, 1996 with Nitro, and this PPV is one of my favorites.

Every match between Undertaker and Bret was memorable. Royal Rumble '96, Summerslam '97, One Night Only in September '97, their little August 2010 Raw stand-off (even though it was a no-decision with no bumps, just the entrances and stare-down were phenomenal).

I even double checked if there was a rumble I'm missing out on I don't know if he was on the lost rumble of 94 but I don't feel right counting that seeing as 1. Wasn't televised and it was just meant to be for the fans and there's probably tons of rumbles like that for all we know so then we might as well say everyone's been in it
And I don't feel right counting his battle royal win because big difference between a battle royal and a royal rumble and he shared the win with Rick Mattel and I'm not counting Rick Bogner because if I counted fake razor it would be a complete disservice to Razor Ramon & Scott Hall

One major highlight from this is the speed King Mabel exits the ring once Jake places the snake in the ring 😂

This was a good PPV, as were most of the main WWF PPVs around this time. I have fond memories of watching this one via my friends VHS, not to long after the PPV had aired. Great memories. Thanks very much.

Definitely one I look back on fondly because it was my first Royal Rumble as a full time fan. It was interesting for me to see random people show up in the Rumble match as it expanded my wrestling knowledge. I have to admit I completely forgot about Ahmed Johnson Vs Jeff Jarrett on this card.

This match is in my top 5 for both men, I enjoyed the slower, methodical pace and the story of the match, although the finish with Diesel sucked. Although I remember next to nothing about this actual card, this was the show that my dad videotaped and showed to an 8 year old me, who had only ever seen wrestlemania 4 once on VHS at my cousin's house. So yeah, I blame this one for everything lol.

Love this video. Fresno is my hometown, I went to this event. I was 15 and I had a blast. Brings back good memories. Only other event I ever attended was the smackdown several years later in Bakersfield,California when stone cold and booker t destroyed a grocery store.

This was the first PPV I ever got to order growing up, I was the biggest HBK mark, was over the moon when he won!
I'm from fresno and this pay per view was huge for us.. hbk winning was like the Lakers getting to the NBA finals
NOONE did a ring step bump like Foley did. Seeing taker take the bump on the ring steps reminded me of HOW GOOD Foley sold that.

Wrestlemania 12 wasn't too shabby whatsoever thinking about it now
The second half of 96, from a booking standpoint, was much better. During that time they were starting to move into a more edgier program and eventually “the attitude era”. The New Generation did have many great matches however, which do get overlooked.

I’m listening to this while at work and occasionally I glance down and see the graphics when a new superstar enters the ring. I just now noticed that Owen Hart will kick your leg out of your leg which is what clued me in to the fact that these captions were not part of the original broadcast.
