Yeah, I *just* started playing the GameCube one a few days ago. I haven't been to my island in a few days 🤔😅
All jokes aside, it's pretty cool and I'm going to be introducing my kids to this version. I started playing New Horizons back in June/July 2021, and I share an island with my four kids. But I wanted to try the previous animal crossing games so I went out and bought a DS and Wild World last year, the a 3DS and New Leaf a couple of months ago, and then a GameCube and animal crossing earlier this month. I've played quite a bit of Wild World, the first day of New Leaf a few weeks ago.

I didn't grow up playing Animal Crossing on Gamecube, and the only one I dug anytime into was New Leaf, I enjoyed it a lot but I can see where you coming from, the first game is the only one that feels like a forest and feels like your getting lost in a community. All others including New Horizons feel so much smaller, I have more control but I also feel like it makes the world feel less immersive for that very reason. In Gamecube I'm a bystander of a large forest of animals while in later entries I feel like I'm the master of the world. I get a very different feeling from even watching gameplay of the first game that I just don't get from the others.

As for an experience with AC, me my mother and younger brother would all play and visit each others towns in wild world, we were all pretty invested in our towns even though my mother would be the only one who knew what she was actually doing. My favorite times were Fridays because she let us stay up super late to visit K.K Slider and would make us hot chocolate, the nighttime music, and the lead up to when he arrived was exciting but also really calming and overall, just a nice experience. Animal crossing has brought me so many calm and wholesome moments like that and i'm super grateful.

Such a beautiful and charming game. The first AC game i actually owned myself was New Leaf, which I got very soon after release. Even though i was in my early teenage years i can still recall a lot of the same emotions you talked about. Setting my alarm an hour earlier to play the game, and getting fully invested in my town and villagers. Probably the most effective form of escapism i’ve had through a videogame.

Soundtrack is probably one of my all time favorites of any game, the feel the game had was cozy, the expereinces and features, while are small were fun, and overall the game itself was just fantastic. Since then I have played all of the other AC titles, and non of them have come close to being a great in terms of feels as the original. I think what I hate the most about the newer games is that the music just doesnt sound the same... I will admit I like being able to see the sky in the newer ones as not seeing the sky in the older games alwasy kinda creeped me out, and the grid system got on my nerves somtimes, but all the features the game had in it that were striped away in laters made AC gamecube for me.

Gosh I agree with you with your opinions - Also played the gamecube one first and got the most attached to it!!! Personally I see a decline in the original flavor in the series for each iteration. Wild World had the same flavor, but less so. City Folk, it was there, but more diluted. New leaf kept diluting it. And now, yes I am hooked on New Horizons, but the weird, one-of-a-kind flavor of animal crossing isn't present.

I miss the Original Animal Crossing because it has more charm than later games! the first animal crossing game I played was the GameCube because my cousin owned it before I bought my own copy! I later played Wild World, City Folk and New Leaf and might get New Horizions someday but GameCube has more charm than later games, I don’t know, I liked how the villagers had more personality and were ruder to the player, I also liked how we could celebrate the Fourth of July in that game, and the Cherry Festival! Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I prefer the GameCube version, yes we had limited space and couldn’t use WiFi to get to another town, just a second memory card! I still play the GameCube by the way, I have two towns

Think of how much stuff is in Animal Crossing Gamecube. Probably over a hundred unique songs, including the hourly tunes, KK songs, nook's, able sisters, post office, etc. and along with those unique songs come variations, those being how the hourly song changes if its snowing or if cherry blossoms are falling, and KK has the live and aircheck versions of his songs. There are over 200 villagers, 40 fish, 40 bugs, 127 gyroids, 25 fossils, 15 paintings, 247 shirts, 64 paper types, 67 wallpaper types, 67 flooring types, a few dozen umbrellas, 19 complete NES games, and over 600 unique pieces of furniture. If this game were made today, the file size would be huge, but Animal Crossing on Gamecube manages to fit all this content into 32 Megabytes! Just a few high quality mp3s could be more than that. It's truly amazing.

I got into animal crossing GameCube about halfway through my time at college and I absolutely loved it. I loved the characters, events, and just finding new things each day. However I noticed how at least half my time if not more was dedicated to fishing. How I was treating it like a part time job or obligation. So I stopped playing. Along with that came the realization that if I had played this in my childhood I would have substituted the characters for IRL friends.
(Keep in mind, this speaks to how excellent the characters are written)

I think you really hit the nail on the head here. I know a part of it is nostalgia, and the fact that I played it as a kid - and you experience this type of game differently as a child than as an adult. But I do think there are real reasons as to why this game felt so objectively different. I could try and write it all out but you said it pretty perfectly. I think "weird charm" is the right way to put it. I think AC started off as a quirky, off-the-beaten-path life simulator, and seemed to have leaned more into the calming, aesthetic "comfort game" type of genre. Newer iterations aren't bad games, they're just a different tone and vibe altogether… The one specific I will note is that the music in AC GNC is wildly superior.

Animal Crossing was best when Katsuya Eguchi was around. He based the game on his solitude after he moves to Kyoto.
Its essence is the "Dialogue". Villagers has interesting dialogue that will drag you in. Even funnier when you bully them or pit fall them, expect the karma! 4:46
AC is about moving in a new town full of animals villagers. You start as an outcast and the more you build relationship with them, the more you become one with the community. "Communication and relationship" is the theme. 2:11 4:22 It is also "Independence", even for villagers, that's why we have cub. 7:38
I feel bad that Katsuya Eguchi gives the series to another direction. AC lost its charm. You aren't an stranger, you are a god, a human god to animal villagers. Isn't AC about accepting the reality it give you: you can't shape the town as you please, villagers are mean to you and your best friend move out without warning. I was heart broken when Poncho move out and I have to bear it.
    *Life is a dick.*
Even if I says ACWW is the best last game of the series, the Gamecube one is unbeatable. With funny dialogue, quirky lore, minimalist look, no influence to American culture, it has an unique and refreshing experience. 5:22 6:32 Wished AC was that way. I blame ACNL for destroying the series. I have no gratitude to the new director. Eguchi must be hurt inside.
7:50 I love the message. I didn't get it when I was young.
Now that I am thinking, I know why I am still interested in AC despise my hatred: I wish it was more. I wish it was better.

Animal crossing keeps trading uniqueness for customization. Now you can do anything on your island in ACNH but it feels empty. You’re a god in control of everything and everyone. In ACPG you were a new member of the community. You got to experience it all not control it all and form real friendships. I miss it.. I hope they step it back but in this culture and with how ACNH sold I’m not sure it will get better.

I understand why a lot of people prefer New Leaf and New Horizons, but in my opinion, I can get those kind of customizable experiences where I can be as creative as my imagination lets me in games like Minecraft. The gamecube game truly makes me feel immersed; like I'm living amongst the animal-like villagers rather than them just being animated decorations on an island that's really only interactive with real life players

i only started playing the first animal crossing a few days ago, and in that time i have:
-made a nemesis in the form of my neighbor mallary
-started a trend of sending angry, pissed off letters to the museum whenever something needs to be identified
-planted the flowers that nook gave me in the form of a dick that’s facing his shop
-made about 9 different patterns for the front of my house
-washed gracies car, and when she said i did “so-so,” i dug holes around the entire acre she was in to “re-dirty” her car
-sent countless ominous letters to villagers and removed my name from them so they couldn’t tell who sent it
    -became best friends with punchy
i literally set an alarm to wake up and play this game just because there is so much unique stuff to discover, even though 99% of it does absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile, in new horizons i would still be waiting for my town hall to finish building, and half of my island would still be unexplorable.
I love the newer games too, but it’s more that i need to play them to get stuff done rather than play them to see what will happen that day.
