- This week on Sailing Kawai we continue our journey across the Cyclades on route to Turkey. We leave Mykonos early hoping to get some strong winds pushing us towards our final Greek Island Patmos. Unfortunately the predicted winds (12-30 knots) don't appear and we don't get in much sailing. Our only excitement is when we come across a sleepy whale and a couple of turtles.
We reach Patmos on dark and anchor in Merikas Bay. The bay is secluded and like most anchorages at this time of year in the Cyclades we are the only boat. Once anchored we entered the cabin to be greeted by an egg like smell. Unfortunately our starter battery is cooked and we must rush to find a new battery out of season. With a little luck we meet a local who assists us finding a battery and we can check out of Greece.
We leave Patmos with a beautiful sunrise and sail to Didim Turkey where we attempt to sign in to the country. We find a local agent who assists us check Kawai in to Turkey and we start exploring this amazing country. Some excitement arises when we get visited by the coast guard.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching :)
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai. We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia. Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our sailing adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

Massive shout out to Adam Yoo. We first heard his music on Sailing La Vagabonde and just love all his music. This guy is a great teacher! He was teaching my Drama today and managed to handle the annoying people well. I subscribed as well, I hope you can sail again :)
I miss so much sailing and pretty sure you do as well. Hopefully we'll be allowed to travel to Turkey in October. Now I started to miss even the noisy Netsel on Saturday evenings 😬🤷♂️
Hahaha yes I would take Netsel any day if it meant travel again. Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and best of luck with October :)
fantastic to see you back and wish you all best wishes for a safe return to sailing next year. Cheers, Chris
Thanks Chris, appreciate it! Yes we can't wait, hope all is well with you, take care :)
Well hello, long time no sail, good to see you back on the tube.... much hugs safe sail, more please.
Hey!!! How are you? Unfortunately only a couple more vids to go, but will be back sailing in no time :) Thanks for the kind words, hope all is well with you, take care!

Hello welcome to TR.
Thanks Murat!
How special is that whale moment! Hopefully you will be back in the water again soon x
Hahaha yes us too! Thanks Julz we are excited to get back. Been way to long, need to catch up soon :) xo
Thanks for the videos and showing your experiences! The Hanse 445 looks awesome. I am looking at one of those for my next boat. How do you guys like it? Also, I am wondering what engine you have and how the gas mileage is while no wind low chop motoring. Have you made a boat tour video yet?
Hi Cam,
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video. We love our Hanse 445, we have a Volvo Penta 75, roughly 18Lph, we did do a boat tour in video 1. All the best :)
Great stuff guys, good to see you posting again!
Thanks Jase mate, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great to see a new episode from Kawai! 😎 And happy that Atilla took care of you for checkin; he's the best 👍 We miss Turkey, although not nearly as much as you guys I'm sure!!!! It's Croatia these year for us (to manage Shengen days).
Hi Hugh, yes sorry it has been a while hahaha. We have both been working in Australia while we wait to get back so have less time. Yes Atilla was great! Yes we can't wait to get back and explore. Enjoy Croatia, have you spent much time in Montenegro? Thanks for watching and enjoy the season!
@@SailingKawai we did a month in Montenegro last season, inspired by you guys. Loved it. We'll stop back through this season on our way back to Corfu, but just for "export" and duty-free fuel... you know the drill 😛
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes a heap of fun. Have a great time :)
Hi Guys. I came back to the channel to check in and see if/when you're heading back over only to find a "newish" video; nice..!. From your replies, it looks like 2022 and that will feel like a lifetime..! We got away to Menorca in June, and Santorini is planned for August; just a week here and there, fly-in/fly-out, but still, it's a great fillip to be traveling again.
The big goal is a 2-week sailing charter in the Cyclades scheduled for September. Been doing my homework (including your back catalogue), assessing the various islands, and working on a couple of itinerary options (weather-dependent of course). Any tips and tricks for places to prioritize and/or avoid; assuming the desire is quiet anchorages rather than party towns..?
Hey Robert, great to hear from you :). Yes the plan is 2022, we are still waiting on our vaccinations, only those over 40 can get the vaccination so just waiting but it's expected that we will receive our first dose by October. Both trips sound fantastic, we did plan a couple of trips to NZ but flare ups cancelled the travel bubble.
I loved Milos, however it's very far away, Paros was a central location that we enjoyed, the wind is the big dependant. We really just sailed where we could and adjusted due to anchorages. It's hard to go wrong in the cyclades :). If you have any further questions please ask :) Take care
@@SailingKawai I feel for you guys. Oz did everything right - more-or-less - until it came to the vaccination program, and it's all falling apart; conversely, that's pretty much the only thing that the UK got right... Yep, we have Milos on the shortlist, and - of course - everything will depend on wind and weather. We only have two weeks, when really two months wouldn't do it justice, so we're going to have to make some hard decisions... Oh well, that always gives us an excuse to return. Stay safe and healthy.
Just wonderful Greece.
Yes Greece is an amazing place. We have been really lucky to spend so much time there. Thanks for watching :)
Quite fond of the odd EFES myself !!!
Where are you guys now ?
My SO 45 is in Marmaris Yacht Marina - and I am still stuck at home in Wellington, NZ ! Missing my baby !!!
Hi John, EFES are the best haha. Mate we are back in Australia, was actually meant to be in NZ yesterday until they shut the boarders. Kawai is also in Marmaris Yacht Marina, hoping to get back early next year. Just working, working, working. Good luck mate
@@SailingKawai Excellent ! Good to hear you are both well :)
We might be back there at the same time !
Cool ! I would be keen to meet up when you are over here next 😊
@@SailingKawai Do you visit Wellington, or Auckland ?
@@johnlord7854 Mate we are heading to Queenstown for some snow :). Hopefully September now!
Hey Guys, I was worry about you, I missed you, I thought you had problems with the virus. So glad to know you are well. Thanks for the video.
Hey Jorge, how are you! We are both well, back in Australia currently and waiting on the vaccination. Hope to back in Turkey sailing early next year. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words :). Take care
@@SailingKawai Hi Guys: I have a question for both, having the experience you have gotten sailing: Is a Beneteau 55 (2014) a very big sailing yacht for a couple for sailing in the Mediterranean? My wife is not very strong. The seller told us, the boat has electric winches, and it is easy to handle (But it is the opinion of the seller :). I would like to thank you in advance for your answer.
Hi Jorge, firstly that's a tricky question, we don't have any experience on a boat that size. 55 foot is a large boat but doable I would think. Have you sailed a 55 foot yacht before? I wish I could assist more but don't have the experience to do so :). Best of luck!
Sorry for the delayed response, but I was traveling by work matters. Thank you so much for your honest answer. I have not to experience in sailing boats, just a project, I thought about Beneteau 55, just because we have 3 students sons, who will visit us in their holiday time, that's the reason because we are thinking about a boat of that size.
Having in mind your experience with a 45' boat, my question...Is a 45' big enough for a family like mine?. Have a great day guys, and enjoy your stay in Australia!
Welcome back with your journey. Nice to know you both are well 👍 Greetings from Italy 🇮🇹
Thanks Marco :), yes we are both healthy and well! Hope all is ok in Italy and thanks for getting in contact! Take care and thanks for watching
Good to see you are back again and feeling hopeful about the future sailing in the Med

Missed you two! So glad to have you back.
Thanks so much! Nice to back posting again, but unfortunately still a while away from sailing full time. How are you guys? Hope all is well and thanks for watching :)
We found a Hanse 495 we are buying in August. Hope to be on the water and headed to someplace warm by late September:)
How exciting, where did you buy her? Best of luck, sounds fantastic! Welcome to the Hanse family :)
I was wondering what’s happen with you guys. Really cool you are ok and back to track 💙
Kerim we are both well! Yes it happened pretty quickly, we are both in Australia working and plan to get the vaccination and be able to head back to Turkey. Unfortunately we are on a waiting list, but are lucky to be healthy and safe. Hope you are well and thanks for the kind words :)
Missed your videos! Did you leave your boat in Turkey and flew back to Aussie? I just loved all the footage in Greece such a magical place
Hi Esra, thanks very much! Yes we left Kawai in Marmaris and flew back to Australia. We are waiting to receive the vaccination so we can head back, hopefully early 2022. Greece is amazing, such a beautiful place :). Thanks for watching!
Nice to see you up loading again. I assume this is the end of 2019? Hope you guys have kept well and can get back on the water soon. ❤️
Hey Nick, yeah mate November 2019 before covid struck haha. We are still in Australia working with a plan to be back in Turkey early 2022. How are you guys going? Are you still travelling? Hope you are both well :)
@@SailingKawai we had a boat purchase fall through just before covid hit, was a blessing looking back. Managed to get a 6 month road trip through Europe done in 2020. Been in the UK in 2021 stuck! Hopefully when borders open we can get back on the boat hunt. Can't wait to meet you guys on the water. ❤️
Sounds great Nick, fingers crossed we can both start travelling again soon :), take care guys!
I miss you so much, 'its Lovely to see you again
Oh that's lovely, nice to be missed :). Great to be able to post again and can't wait to sail again full time! Thanks again for getting in contact
Hi we have just watched your previous vid on buying your boat process and looking for advice. We are buying a non vat boat from Moorings in Greece which we plan to export with a completion date set for 31 sept. We currently have the signed bill of sale produced in prep for deflagging, however the broker advises we ned to pay the balance now to begin the deflagging. The question then is, what date would the purchase date be in order to comply with VAT export rules?
Hi Steve, firstly congratulations! Unfortunately it is a stressful time and each purchase is different. I believe you do have to own the boat before deflagging. We didn't have to rush so I can't remember the timeframe sorry. Sorry I can't help you more, best of luck!
What app do you use to track your sail?
Hi Freya, we use Navionics on our Ipad and through our navigation system on our boat, hope that helps :)
You two are back? I missed you both :)
Hey! Yes we have finally posted a video haha. We are still in Australia awaiting our vaccinations :). Hopefully we can travel again early next year. Thanks so much, great to post again, take care!
I missed u two. So excited u back
Thanks so much Dennis! We are kinda back, these videos are from the end of 2019 before covid struck. We are back in Australia waiting for the vaccination before we are able to fly out. We do plan to continue our trip starting early 2022. Thanks for the kind words, hope all is well :)
How do you go through customs in turkey? And do you need to go through customs leaving greece ?
Hi Rece, yes when leaving Greece you must see local Police and Port Police. The Greek authorities will tell you the process :). You are then required to leave, and make your way to the next destination. When arriving in Turkey you need to find an agent who will walk you through the process. We arrived out of season which made it a little harder, but overall an easy process :)
Good to see some uploads.
Thanks Roger! Yes we still have a few videos to release while we wait. Can't wait to be sailing again early next year. Hope you are well and thanks for checking in :). Take care
Good ep sir :)
Thanks!
Its good but not as good as the sights and sounds of the N- Block staffroom.
