Tu se udala, rodila mog tatu i ostavila mi u zapisima lepote Vojvodjanskih recepata: knedle, gumboce, nasuva, šuf nudle.....recepti kakvih nema u ostatku Srbije. Jako jako dugo nisam bila u Subotici ali ovaj video me je na to pokrenuo sada, da odem i uživam u Vojvodjanskim ukusima. Tako nedostaje baka 😢
In Serbia you must eat (and that is the true heart of Serbian cuisine): Karađorđeva šnicla, Pihtije, Pečena paprika sa belim lukom, Riblja čorba, Sremska kobasica, Stelja, Turšija, Proja, Kolenice u saftu, Glava u škembetu, Podvarak, Škembici, Ajmokac, Leskovačka mućkalica, Praseće pečenje, Jagnjeće pečenje, Practically, you tried only tourist menu. Above will expand your sight big time.
Did you watch our food video yet? We ate a bunch of things there, including some in your list. We are Leskovačka Mućkalica at some point, but the restaurant was too dark to film. Delicious!
You're right! We were a bit short on time, so we were trying to fit everything in before dark. We had less than 24 hours there. We wish we would have booked TWO nights.
Look guys, you're nice and nitty preety, thanks for nice words and comments, but Belgrade is a 2 days city break tour, Novi Sad and Subotica daily excursion thing... If you come to enjoy in sins such as tobacco, alcohol, partying, food and observing/beeing with beautiful people you can spend a few days more in SRB...
We were actually in Belgrade for 4 days, Novi sad 2 days, and Subotica 1 day. You're right, Belgrade definitely deserves more time than the others, since we didn't even get to see everything there (we even missed the Saint Sava Church😅). We didn't have time to do too many sinful things in Serbia this time around. Maybe next time 😆🙃
Did you visit Palic? That is a nearby village, that has the oldest tourist tradition in our country. Try over there the restaurant "Jelen" and "Majkin Salas", "Mala Gostiona", "Omega" and go to the spa centre to try the healing "brown" water. Also go for a walk around the lake. It truly is a shame if you visit Subotica and not go to Palic.
We actually never even heard of Palic until people mentioned it in the comments! Someone else mentioned it as well. If we had known, we would have visit.
@@wherearewe-yt Wow,that's interesting😊,because if you plan to go to Subotica and search what to do, first thing comes up is lake Palic(among other thing to,of course). To bad you missed it, but next time maybe😊I miss my city😍, greetings form Canada😊
Subotica already had 100.000 people in 1900! cities around here experiencing decline in population so yeah, what now seems small cities and towns were much more important over 100 years ago. if you visited some smaller towns in Vojvodina(Serbia) you would be amazed how beautiful buildings are there. Sombor, Zrenjanin, Vrsac, Kikinda, Senta...
We really enjoy smaller towns and cities. We plan on coming back to Serbia at some point - so hopefully we can visit one in the future. Niš is somewhere we plan on returning to for sure, so maybe we'll end up in a smaller city somewhere in the south.
@@wherearewe-yt smaller towns in south have not so nice architecture vs north, but energy down there is better. have fun guys wherever you are and go. love from Zrenjanin Serbia
It had such a small town vibe! We come from much larger countries, so in comparison a city of only 100K is considered quite small. It was very walkable, which we enjoyed.
The paprika was spread to Europe through the Ottoman empire, and it was used for food in Serbian region for centuries and became stable from South in Leskovac to the north at Horgosh. Eventually, it found its way to Hungary around the Horgoš area which is bordering with Serbia. This area brings forth some of the best paprika (plant and produce is called Paprika). It was not up until 19th century that Paprika was used as food in Hungary, before that it was ground paprika used as medicine. It became hugely popular in Hungary, and became widespread as "Paprika" in its ground format. This is why people say Paprika in western countries, they mean ground version, but in reality the real name is Paprika that stems from Papar or Biber (black pepper, because it was hot like black pepper). The one you had is called Ljuta Papricica (hot pepper, diminutive), and is often served with grilled meat around the springtime.
@@wherearewe-yt Ljutenica (Lyutenitza) and Pindjur (Pinjur) is something you have to try then. Ajvar was used in Belgrade restaurants like "Red Caviar", hence the name. When Romania built a dam, population of sturgeons and caviar served in Serbia reduced, so paprika was used like a substitute, or a "poor man's caviar". You should 100% go to the city of Niš next time, solely for the sake of the food.
I said that because I viewed cities and towns as two different things. There's no universal rule to this but places of less than 100k residents are often called towns and places with more than that are cities. And Subotica only has a little over 100k. At least that was my logic 😅. I didn't mean that Subotica was one of the smallest places in general in Serbia. I'm aware that there are many other smaller places in Serbia but I guess I viewed those as towns and villages. Maybe I should have said "major cities" instead since many people seemed to be confused about my word choices 🤓 🙃.
Pizza Burek is the best in Lipa my favorite burek, I buy it since I was a kid, even tho it was expensive for me it was something I had save up for it's a great dish and the cook is a master sheff in Lipa. Prices are ok, they are around our comfort zone, some can be expensive, to a foreigner this might be cheap, for us natives on a lower spectrum or even mid class it's a mixed bag of ok and expensive-ish. Something you cant buy every day but on occasions. The reason why Subotica have all sorts of mixture of architecture and styles is because it was a crossroad of different conflicts through centuries, plenty of bombings etc. Hungarians and Germans alone made the most astrocities towards Serbs and Jews in every conflict. But you will only hear about ones about the Jews or see monuments mentioning it. You shown / passed by few even. They are hiding the Serbian losses, facts because Serbs were native and in biggest numbers therefore a huge genocide had been performed above Serbs and not only that but also their history is being hidden in most places. Hungarians, Germans and other want to hide those facts so they don't have to pay or their legacy to be called out upon. Even USA bombed Subotica in World War 2 and they suppose to be allies ... Hungarians were the butchers, Germans the bombers and USA the last nail in the coffin. Even tho Serbs managed to win back and people vote back this land to Serbia. If you see lots of heavily damaged buildings to point of no return like that church you mentioned that is all remnant of WW2 bombings and war times that over time just got worse since the foundation is damaged due to the bombings vibrations, so not earthquakes but close enough or lets say even worse. The reason why Hungary was building this place through decades was because they were the ones who tore it to the ground in the 1st place ... So later they were forced to pay for what they did. Even tho for the rest Belgrade finances keep sending money to Subotica but lots of that money usually vanishes among oposition and corrupt elites so I am surprised Subotica and Plaic is developed as is and not worse. Another reason why in 90s Hungary refused to bomb this place even tho they were (are) in NATO is because they didn't wanted history to repeat itself and pay again for war reparations like in previous wars. Not because there are Hungarians here which is the common media excuse, but because they dont want to make expenses they cant pay anyway. Hungary suffered financially a lot in all their wars. So now a different strategy is involved, peaceful wars. And EU is keep ruining the finances anyway so a huge silent war is going on in whole of Europe.
Subotica is beautiful and was fun to visit, but we typically prefer living in bigger cities, like Belgrade. More food and bar options, better connected to travel to other places as well!
Oh, man..that's a tough question! For Anja, she is obsessed with burek. We loved everything we had, but my favorite dish of the whole trip was from Cevaplija, in our first video. We had these meatballs, with caramelized onions and kajmak. And the bread was just so fresh, and amazing. I'm a sucker for ANY grilled meat dish, with freshly baked bread. That's also why I love komplet lepinja as well. I also love sarma. So many great dishes though. Too hard to choose! Hahaha.
no shade on you or anything i promise!! but on english it's actually spelled "rusyns" not rusins. people who don't speak a slavic language likely wont know what "rusin" is. also, when speaking english, you're also expected to say roma. the term gypsy might be offensive to some people.
We live in Hungary, so a few of the popular dishes from Subotica are similar to what we get there. Anja wanted to have cevapi and burek one last time before we left - she's obsessed! Beef in horseradish sauce sounds amazing though!! Yum.

0:25 ha ha ha It is a from a perspective of germano-canadian people, from serbian perspective, Subotiica is a big city, 5. and 6. the bigest city in Serbia together with Leskovac, far south of Serbia. 1. Belgrade, northern part, capital of Serbia, 1 700 000 metro area, whole city with suburbs, not just urban part. 2. Novi Sad. northern part, capital of region of VOJVODINA, city has 360 000 people, metro area. Vojvodina is together with central region, the bigest region in the country. 3. Niš, southern part, capital, 275 000 metro area. 4. Kragujevac, central part, capital. Central region is the bigest region in Serbia, name is ŠUMADIJA, it means FOREST LANDs, FOREST=ŠUMA on serbian. 190 000 metro area. 5. Subotica and Leskovac, both around 140 000 people, metro area, not just urban area of the city. In Serbia, we also count Kosovo and Metochia as one of regions. Capital is Priština, 500 000 people after wars, before wars, 150 000. Btw, Vojvodina, it means DUKEs LANDs. DUKE=VOJVODA on serbian.
In comparison to where we are from, the populations of the cities seem quite small for sure! We plan to head to Kosovo when we return to the region. That'll be interesting. 😅

Be aware of migrants there, travel during the day only and have your wallet chained to your waiste. Do not go to isolated streets and alleys. Other than that nice city and nice local people.
Vojvodina was like the Serbian state, but under the occupation of Austria-Hungary, not Hungary... True history is rarely on Wikipedia... Previous name - Serbian Vojvodina later The Duchy of Serbia and the Banat of Tami on the whole with Vojvoda Stratimirović, Serbian not Vojvođanin. Formed by the patriarch Rajačić, the priest. The territory where the majority was Serbs and still are/we are today such have/we have equal rights as and all minorities living in this area and which they must respect the laws of this country. The so-called "autonomous" are coming from the communist families they introduced autonomy where it should not be and who also ran away from history lessons.
We didn't realize that it is an autonomous region until later. The history is pretty interesting and it definitely felt like a mix of different places.
@@wherearewe-yt It's not autonomous like independent, it was, now its not and it never be, because even the USA, CIA and other want it, it will never be because Serbs are the majority!

Tu se udala, rodila mog tatu i ostavila mi u zapisima lepote Vojvodjanskih recepata: knedle, gumboce, nasuva, šuf nudle.....recepti kakvih nema u ostatku Srbije. Jako jako dugo nisam bila u Subotici ali ovaj video me je na to pokrenuo sada, da odem i uživam u Vojvodjanskim ukusima. Tako nedostaje baka 😢
I'm sorry about your grandma. I'm sure she's proudly watching you whenever you cook her delicious recipes 😊. Subotica was very pretty.

Practically, you tried only tourist menu. Above will expand your sight big time.
Did you watch our food video yet? We ate a bunch of things there, including some in your list.
We are Leskovačka Mućkalica at some point, but the restaurant was too dark to film. Delicious!
❤❤❤
Hi I live in serbia today I went to Subotica my grandmothers live hire but I live in LJUTOVO
We enjoyed ourselves in Subotica! It's a nice city. We have never been to Ljutovo before though.
You should have gone into synagogue and city hall! You have missed a lot by not going. 🙂
You're right! We were a bit short on time, so we were trying to fit everything in before dark. We had less than 24 hours there. We wish we would have booked TWO nights.
Come to Leskovac, the barbecue capital of the world 😀
We like likely go there, and to Niš, on our next trip! Everyone said the food is the best in these cities.
Saturday city-Subotica
Do you know why it is called that?
Yes we love Piza 😅 and we have good street food
Maybe next time 😆🙃
❤🇷🇸
😍😍🤩🤩👏👏👍👍
The closer to Hungary you get the spicier the food gets!
I (Brandon) love spicy food! Anja isn't as much of a fan..haha.
Subotica is 5th largest city in Serbia…it used to be 3rd largest city in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
It had such a small town vibe! We come from much larger countries, so in comparison a city of only 100K is considered quite small. It was very walkable, which we enjoyed.
@@wherearewe-yt size doesn't matter lol
I love paprika of all types! Though I (Brandon) particularly love spicy versions. Anja not so much. 😅
Visti palic and sombor its rly near Subotica
We're gone from Serbia now, but maybe some day we can come back and see more. 😀
One of the biggest cities of Serbia - fifth by the population.
It very much has a small town vibe! We enjoyed it.
Subotica is not one of the smallest cities in Serbia. It's one of the largest.
And Subotica is probably most multi ethnic city in Serbia
Hi I live In serbia
Vegeta.. Its dryed onions, celery and carrots, then minced and combined with salt an pepper...
It was so tasty! We realized that they actually sell Vegeta in Budapest as well but we had never noticed it before.

She can't handle any sort of spice..but she tried. 😂🥵
@@wherearewe-yt it is noticeable 😅👍🤘
So where do you think you would live?
Belgrade, Subotica or Novi sad?
Subotica is beautiful and was fun to visit, but we typically prefer living in bigger cities, like Belgrade. More food and bar options, better connected to travel to other places as well!
The soulless dead eyes are crazy.
@101SUGABERG It's probably from having to deal with commenters like you for so long. 😂
Probably not
Da li samo meni ova devojka liči na Fibi iz prijatelja 😂
Haha, you're the second person who said this actually 😂
Favourite food so far in Serbia? :)
Hahaha.
come to Croatia
We have been to Croatia once, but only to Dubrovnik. We definitely need to go back and make some videos! It's a beautiful country.
0:44 official ethnic composition: 35% Serbs, 30% Hungarians, 10-15% Croats, 10-15% Bunjevci. Others are: Gypsies, Germans, Rusins(unique people from Ukraine), Bulgarians, Slovaks,...
no shade on you or anything i promise!! but on english it's actually spelled "rusyns" not rusins. people who don't speak a slavic language likely wont know what "rusin" is. also, when speaking english, you're also expected to say roma. the term gypsy might be offensive to some people.
@@collared the term is not necessarily offensive as is potentially incorrect; not all gypsies are Roma, there are Irish travelers etc.
You didn't visit Nish, larger than Novi Sad, and best grill and burek in Srbija. You didn't visit Ortodoks church.
Unfortunately, we were only around for less than two days, so we didn't get to see much of anything! Maybe next time.
Can you go to Macedonia❤😊
We will likely go there in a few months! 😁

Pity you did not have gulas, punjene paprike, gomboce, steamed beef in horseradish sauce, etc etc.Come back again, you won't be sorry

vegeta is croatian seasoning
Yeah, we found that out later. We love it!
FUJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ-WHY SHE EATS SENF WITH KAJMAK IN BREAD ! NOT GOOD TASTE ! BUT AFTER YOUR TRIP IN SRBIJA SHE IS NOT SO THINY LIKE BEFORE ! THIS IS GOOD BRANDON BRAVOOOOOOOOO !!!!
She's German, she loves senf! Hahaha.
Fuuuuujjjjjjj at your comment.
Welcome to my city greetings for you and sweet voice ❤❤
Hvala!
Fuck the pepsi, fuck the pizza, all we need gibanica 🎉
We had gibanica in our first video. It was great. 😎
There is one rule, never eat ćevapi with кеčap :D
Is it a Bosnian thing?? The restaurant was called Sarajevo..but we've been to Bosnia, and I don't ever remember having ćevapi with ketchup. I don't like it that way. Haha.
Be aware of migrants there, travel during the day only and have your wallet chained to your waiste. Do not go to isolated streets and alleys. Other than that nice city and nice local people.
It didn't seem very unsafe there. We enjoyed it! Wish we had a bit more time there.
Vajdaság didn't use to be "occupied" by Hungarians: She was part of the Hungarian Kingdom. Now She is occupied by Serbia🇭🇺✌🏻...
