    About the Backyard format:⏳👟
A backyard ultra event is a unique ultramarathon race that typically takes place on a looped course, usually in a backyard or other small, contained space. The race format involves runners completing a loop of a set distance, often a mile or a kilometer, within a certain time limit, usually one hour.
At the end of each loop, runners must be ready to start the next loop again when the clock starts for the next hour. This means the runners must manage their pace and energy levels carefully to ensure they have enough time to complete each loop within the time limit.
The event continues in this format until only one runner remains, or until no runner can complete a full loop within the time limit. This format makes the backyard ultra event unique in that it is not a race against other runners but rather a race against the clock and oneself.

Lazarus Lake's approach to running, endurance, athletics and life is so fantastic. I only just came across the concept of the backyard ultra a few weeks ago when I started to tentatively scope out some nearby trail races. It's such a brilliant idea and this short film does a great job of conveying what can be accomplished just by participating in an event like this. Love it.

I ran a Backyard last november, and this brought some of the trauma back 😄
We had atrocious weather for the first 8 hours, pouring rain sometimes turning into sleet, gusts of wind... Keeping warm wasn't too much of an issue, but the trail turned into a river of mud and stayed that way for the rest of the event.
Had to tap out at 20 laps. I was slightly disappointed to not make it to 24, but I just couldn't keep going, the mud and water had sapped all of my energy. This didn't stop a few mad lads from doing more than 50 laps. The finisher did 58, bonkers.
A few things that may not be obvious if you've never entered one of these events and that I don't think were talked about in the video:
    * The time pressure is just unrelenting, minutes at camp go by really fast of course (especially if you don't have a crew), but on the course you're also constantly making sure that you're in the right spot at the right time. On regular ultras you may have to keep time limits in mind, depending on your pace, but you always have freedom in how you manage your effort. There's not a lot of freedom at a Backyard.
    * Laps go by slowly at the start, but gradually you tune everything out and you really get into the flow of things. "Start running after this tree trunk. Am I too hot/cold? Walk for the next 5 minutes. What do I need to do at camp before next lap?" etc. It's quite meditative, more so than a regular ultra where the changing landscape provides some mental stimulation.
    * The lap distance is actually diabolical. It's easy to run or run+walk 6.7 km / 4.17 miles in less than an hour, so almost everyone can last a while. But it's also practically impossible to fully walk it, so once the exhaustion and pain set in, you really have to grit your teeth and hang on with all your willpower on those sections that you know you *have* to run to make it back in time.
I strongly encourage all runners to enter a Backyard at least once in their lives, it's a very unique experience.

That last comment he made is amazing. So spot on. As a new runner, I got 2 marathons under my belt and I’m doing a 35 miler in a few weeks. I tell people all the time. You want to find out some shit about yourself go do an endurance event like running a marathon or longer. Anybody can run a marathon, it’ll be harder for some than others. But too many people count themselves out before they even try. That is amazing though, to start an endurance race and not knowing where the finish line is. Beautiful.

@@FindYourFeetFilms It surprises me that people don't realize it is him. I guess it seems a bit confusing in a sense but he's hard to forget.

I went into my first Backyard Ultra 6 weeks after my first season of XC. I had never run anything more than a 5k before XC and barely even got over 16 miles for my longest run. It did not go anything like I was expecting and I was definitely miserable after all was said and done. But it was the step that really helped me fall in love with running. That was around 7 months ago, I’ve now run my first Marathon and am training for my next season in XC. I have so many aspirations for running, but this concept has to genuinely be one of the things I look forward coming back to the most! So many awesome people I’ve been able to connect with, and pushing myself to new heights I never thought I could go!

I spent 3 months backpacking in Utah, in the desert and mountains. 3 straight months. Hiking 6 days of the week. There were so many times we were exhausted mid-hike and would take a break. But we knew not to sit down, because getting back up is the hardest part.

I hate running. Small heart and half shot lungs from chemo. Those rules are awesome, I was hooked on the intro.
TH-cam recommended have been gold lately, first the 24h marathon, now the « run until you can’t make it in time » marathon!
    Nice documentary!

That's crazy if you can move 4 miles per hour for a whole day you will run nearly 100 miles. That makes going 100 miles seem less impossible but still hard af.
