@@gcasillas1213 I agree, I don't think that any of the Star Wars films are what I would call great. The Original Trilogy had the effects ahead of their time which made them memorable but that's about it. The universe of Star Wars is amazingly detailed and it would be fantastic if they tried new stuff but they seem to be terrified of trying new things. Look at the Mandalorian, a fantastic new show barely connected to anything we've seen before and now it's a hit, they're planning on bringing known characters into it. What would be the point? Let it be its own thing instead of shoe horning already known characters in.
I remember going to the movies and seeing Enemy of the State with Will Smith precisely because we knew this trailer was going to be at the front. This was in Honolulu in 1998. This is why my brother hasn’t watched a trailer for any film he wants to enjoy since AOTC, he’s now a huge marvel fan boy and won’t watch trailers to get hyped up, but tbh, I can see why lmao, trailers these days do show every god dam best bits of the film in a 2-3min trailer somehow XD
@@splorgify I like to watch the first 2 trailers a movie rereleases to get me hyped and then avoid all content relating to it in the following months so the footage in the theater is still fresh to me
The prequels are absolutely fantastic movies with a mysterious athmosphere. Me and all the kids growing up in that time loved them. They are Star Wars to us.
Dont care what anyone says, i will always love the prequel trilogy . They were my firstb in theater star wars movies, and i saw each one many many times . That "anakin skywalker, meet obi wan kenobi" scene still hits hard with sooooo much awsome nostalgia❤
Well that’s because they’re seeing young obi wan and another skywalker when the only skywalker they know at this point is Luke so this was definitely a big deal when the movie first came out
It's always been interesting to me that they showed the double bladed lightsaber in the trailer, imagine seeing that for the first time ever in the theatre.
This made me think, what if so many modern movies didn't even include their big reveals in their trailers? Captain America Civil War's trailer wouldn't show Spider-Man, The Force Awakens trailer wouldn't show Kylo's lightsaber, Rogue One wouldn't reveal Vader's appearance.
Not many people saw the trailer back in 99. The internet was still taking baby steps in thoose days. There were no smartphones no YT or FB; u needed a desktop PC and a dial-up connection (which was like 256 kbps) and websites with video streaming were very rare. Most people saw it in theaters for the first time. I know i did. And i loved it.
I went on opening night -- the audience gave a standing ovation at the end. I went back in the next several weeks and watched it 8 more times in total at the cinema. I had waited 16 years for another installment and it didn't disappoint. After that malcontents on the internet whinged and whined to each other and pulled everyone into their negative echo chambers. I always loved the film -- along with all the other prequels.
Yeah, I went through a period where I just echoed what Red Letter Media said about the Prequels, which is insane because I initially loved them. Aside from Jeremy Jahns, I stopped watching “film critics” because the only opinion that matters is mine.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace. Sheesh! Where have those years gone?! It seems only yesterday that I was watching this for the first time in the movie theater. Happy 25 years, Episode I! The movie that began Anakin's journey and also gave us so much more. 🎂🥳
@@bigc6818 Yeah it had flaws but Phantom menace revolutionized technology and CGI. You only have these crazy CGI battles bc George Lucas had the balls to make it happen first
@@JordanWheeler1999 we can only hope! After the reviews of Rise of Skywalker I think Disney is finally realizing what a liability she is. She needs to go before she ruins another beloved franchise. Please don't let her ever get involved with Peter Jackson or Lord of the Rings!
Ghost anyone who had seen the original trilogy (which was most people at that point) would know that anakin becomes Vader. Palpatine is less obvious, but still not very hard to guess. Just look at him, he just exudes evil.
I remember watching that trailer back in the late 90s, it was an awesome trailer. Made us flock to go see it. People paid to see Meet Joe Black just to see this trailer, then after the trailer people left before the main feature started, that's how awesome this trailer was and still is.
I have hardcore nostalgia seeing this in theaters, then eating at taco bell afterwards and getting the large special cups with Episode 1 characters on them, then going to blockbuster and renting an N64 game. Life was good
Despite being born in 2004, me and my family were still using those special cups with episode 1 characters into the late 2010s. I think we stopped using them in 2020 because they were getting old, but still, they had a long run.
Imagination as in an inconsistent plot line. I feel like the entirety of the plot in the prequels was only accurate to that one scene with Obi-Wan giving Luke the brief history of his father in episode IV. I don’t understand how the same person wrote the originals and prequels and overlooked so many problems and inconsistencies in something he wrote himself.
@JoTech The basic beats of the story lines up, sure, but I'm talking about the movies from a character level. In the Original Trilogy, we learn that Obi-Wan and Anakin were great friends, even brothers, and we don't see that much at all in the prequels. They seem to be on edge with each other most of the time, apart from the very beginning of Episode III. We also see Yoda as a wise and peaceful Jedi master, who tells Luke that the Force is used by the Jedi for knowledge and defense, never attack. In the prequels he's a gung-ho military general, which makes no sense.
I didn’t grow up watching the prequels. They aren’t a “part of my childhood” and I don’t have any nostalgia for them. That being said, I absolutely love these movies. They tell interesting stories with great characters (there are more good characters than there are bad ones), amazing action scenes and are just tons of fun overall. No, they are not perfect: the cgi is pretty dated and although the romantic and political parts were necessary for the story, I understand that they aren’t fun to watch but that is about as far as my complaints go. They are no where near as bad as everyone was saying they were at the time and I’m glad to see more and more people are beginning to warm up to them.
CGI wasn't dated back then, if you watch corridor crew video where they look at prequel's CGI, you will understand that. In fact it was peak CGI performance at the time and prequels were the first films to have full CGI scenes. No one has done that before.
@@l.pricetag.5207 Political scenes were needed for us to understand how a single sith could destroy republic and jedi. Romantic scenes were necessary to explain the downfall of Anakin. Not only because of that, but that was the main factor.
thewewguy8t88 at first it sounded like they were pumped for a new starwars movie.. but then the sound of their cheering changed from that of excitement to that of nostalgia after they began to realize xD
It was the best Star Wars trailer ever. The images on screen, we didn't know who these knew characters were, but we knew Obi Wan and Anakin, R2D2 and and of course Yoda.
@@davidbeyerle6996 ummmm yes. George made the best 6 movies a Star Wars fan could ask for. I’m guessing you are a rogue one fan and thought the last Jedi was phenomenal. Long live Kathleen Kennedy and Walt Disney haha.
@@brucewayne9962 sorry, prequels are trash. Bad acting, complete focus on new CGI technology rather than on the story. They're fun. But nothing special. Last Jedi was just ok, but leaps and bounds better than Episodes 1-3.
@@davidbeyerle6996 At least the prequels innovated the canon of Star Wars, (they introduced us to the Jedi Order, the Galactic Republic, the clone wars) the sequels were only copy-paste of the original trilogy.
Way more than halo 3. I have never seen hype like this since, it was insane. People literally camping out for days in front of movie theaters. Staff had to inform the audience that there were no lightsabers allowed to be turned on during the movie etc. There were cheers at multiple scenes on opening day, when R2 was introduced, when obi wan broke maul’s lightsaber, when anakin and obi wan met, and several other scenes. I honestly can’t imagine _anything_ comparing to the hype for episode I, mostly because TH-cam dissects everything ad nauseum these days, and because everything is divisive. You have to understand, in 1999, it was pre 9/11, it was pre dot com burst, the economy was roaring, the budget was balanced, and every Star Wars movie ever made was a massive cinematic masterpiece both critically and financially. Nobody ever expected more, because the story was done, although there was always a hint because Star Wars was episode 4 5 and 6. At that time, Star Wars was universally loved and embraced by everyone, what was so fantastic about it was everyone was part of the fandom, young, old, black, white, rich, poor,,, there was no division in the fan base. So when news started circulating about a prequel trilogy, it was bonkers. Nowadays not so much because there will always be naysayers.

I remember walking into a local comic shop and the guys behind the desk were giddy with excitement cause they had just downloaded this trailer and were about to watch it for the first time. At the time I had no idea what a movie trailer was. But then I heard the telltale sound of SW music and realized what they were watching. I was checking out Marvel's Secret Wars that I was collecting at the time and at the 1:36 mark they went nuts. WHOOOOAAAAAA!! DID YOU SEE THAT?!!! DID YOU SEE THAT?!! DOUBLE LIGHTSABER! PLAY IT AGAIN! AGAIN! YOU SAW THAT RIGHT?! WHO WAS THAT?! JIM! DO YOU KNOW WHO THAT IS?! Never seen what I thought at the time to be adults freak out like that over Star Wars. Then I saw the trailer. Still gives me chills.
I was 4 years old at the time and I actually somehow have a faint memory of going to the movies to see it. l ended up falling asleep halfway through it though :( kid me had no idea.
So did I. I was in Kindergarten when those re-releases came out. My parents and I went and saw Empire and Jedi. For some reason we didn’t see a New Hope. I didn’t quite understand what was going on in The Phantom Menace when I was little bit still loved it all the same. These prequels were not perfect but I still appreciate them more then the Disney trilogy.
"Every generation has a legend" I genuinely feel bad for the current one. We didnt have the greatest movies, but we had ROTS, the clone wars, jedi knight, battlefront and the old republic, all which imo makes up to be the best generation of Star wars.
We had the x-wing simulator series, grand admiral thrawn, Mara jade skywalker, talon karrde, and darth Vader, and Star Wars was universally loved and embraced by everyone, old, young, black, white, male, female, with no division whatsoever in the fandom.
I was fortunate enough to be born just before Return of the Jedi, growing up with those movies and the wonderful 90's Star Wars games, then getting the prequels and the newer games after that. Of course, I lived to see the stuff that's come out more recently...but still, I think I got the best of both worlds. Oregon Trail Generation ftw!
@@nocrtname To quote from Mass Effect: "Ah yes, 'Expanded Universe'! A series of novels with incredible plotlines and amazing characters, allegedly telling far better stories than Disney ever could! We have dismissed that claim."
oh no honey. it makes it a decent era of star wars. Totally respectable and sometimes great. (kotor in particular). i suspect nothing will compare to the Return of the Jedi era star wars, as it was at it's media frenzy height. But even the 90's were exceptionally great with Heir to The Empire and other truly great novelizations, Dark Forces, X-Wing and other amazing games. as well as new action figures out, seeing the originals in theatres again, and New comics like Dark Empire. oh, and the Magic style card game! It was a good time to be a star wars fan for sure. Buy yes, my daughter has seen every new star wars movie except the last in theatres... She fell asleep during the finale of The Last Jedi. lol. I didn't bother waking her up. She was glad i didn't. She was 9. I showed her the prequels- she really like Revenge of the Sith. thought the first two were genuinely bad. I showed her the originals and she was enthralled from start to finish! so yes, I feel bad for the new generation not getting any amazing star wars. But even from a 9 year old girl point of view, the originals and that era are where it's at. I can't even imagine what it was like being a kid in 1977! Even though i'm sure they were pretty cool in 1999 as a kid too.
@@moonwatcher99 Then Mass Effect is a twit. because many of the star wars novels are truly great. while the worst ones are only slightly better than Disney star wars. which is pretty god-awful admittedly. I can name off way more great novels than i can horrible ones, that is for sure.
The entire prequel trilogy is super underrated. Yes revenge of the Sith memes and jokes are hilarious and yes acting is corny at times, but the battle on mustafar and when obi wan tells anakin he was his brother will always be what made Star Wars a SERIOUS force to be reckoned with. Before those movies, Star Wars was more of a light humored fun family movie. While they maintained that in the prequels, they added the darkness needed to complete the story of Vader. The sequel trilogy’s did absolutely nothing for the skywalker story. They were like the annoying youngest sibling wanting to tag along with nothing to bring to the table
People talk about "how bad" the dialogue in the prequels was. But here we are over 20 years later and people are still quoting the movies incessantly. Something "that bad" doesn't last that long in pop culture
I prefer the sequels than the originals, which is strewn with bad acting, bad special effects, and cringy dialogues. (Don't say it was made in the 60s blah blah blah...it was the best at that time blah blah blah... because I don't live in the 60s and I'm used to special effects of the modern times.)

@@leedoes3380 It is absolutely better than all of the new Star Wars movie. Force Awakens, Rogue One, Last Jedi, Solo, and Rise of Skywalker. There is no Disney Star Wars movie that is better than Phantom Menace lol
This is the Teaser Trailer, the Theatrical Trailer was slightly better. Especially how it ended with Sidious classic line "Wipe them out, all of them!" & Obi-Wan screaming "No!" (Qui-Gon's death).
This was awful. Ruins like every plot point. Tells you the anakin wins podrace and ends in space battle. But the real travesty was revealing Darth Mauls lightsaber so limply, in the middle of the trailer and only using half a shot.

Ahahahah nope. We'll say "poetry" only in case there is the author. In the sequels there are only copiated things and fanservice, disguised as """" poetry""""
Well we can now look past the sequels. Disney made up for them with The Mandalorian. In my honest opinion the sequels were not that bad. Not great. Just not totally bad. Just not edited right. I get the idea of what story they were trying to tell but it didn't come out right because of bad editing. If it were edited differently they would have been much better. But I still say they were not totally bad. Just not great!
@@stephendobbins9251 Made up for it? Oh please lol, I hate people using that argument. Mando would have still happened under any perceivable scenario. Mando is good not because Di$ney, not because LF or Kennedy, but because Favreau and Filoni. The problems i see with the PT is not editing, but poor writing and being rushed, and those are related. Nothing was properly planned, Lucas took decades to write the PT, and it took him over a decade to write the OT. Di$ney said to Jar Jar Abrams "so you're good with only 2 years right??? The entire ST only takes 6 years, with a director flip halfway and then having 4 different directors and p producers work on RoS, which honestly seems like the most rushed out of any of them. Revenge of the Sith is my all time favorite star wars movie. The most action, the best special effects (compared to 1 and 2) Higher stakes, people actually die, QUOTES FOR DAYS, the light saber battle between obiwan and anikin actually had real emotion behind it! I could go on forever about it 😂 I loved it in 2005 and I still love it 15 years later.
the opening space battle i had my jaw dropped the whole time, i'd never seen anything close to that epic on a big screen before, and i was an adult at the time lol still love it. what a great opener!
I remember keeping my computer on for about 20 hours straight downloading this trailer on dialup as a .mov file so that I could watch it in QuickTime. Watched it endlessly.
That's not really true: A lot of people loved the prequels. Me and my cousins as preteens watched Phantom Menace's lightsaber fight scenes so much we choreographed half of it and did it with sticks. The Obi-Wan block behind his back and then to his front (ridiculously impractical, but looked and felt so damn cool to do) was a favorite. We had to work out the fight so all three of us got to do it at least once. While Phantom Menace was kind of a disappointment for large parts (the pod race was super long and boring), and Anakin's fall to the dark side going from "he must stand trial" to "sure I'll slaughter children" in under 5 minutes was beyond forced, the prequels as a whole we loved. 4, 5, and 6 were our parents' Star Wars, 1, 2, and 3 were OUR Star Wars. And as much as a lot of people have been salty about various bits of it, they were still generally accepted by most fans. Unlike the new trilogy which has split the fandom in twain.
SubduedRadical I think the point Lucas was making was that the fall to the dark side is like a slow roast. You don’t realize it, but when it overtakes you, you are completely subject to it. Like a slow roast, where you don’t realize you’re being cooked until you’re being prepared on a plate.
I remember the anticipation after such a long wait. I loved the prequels at the time and defended them when they were supposedly "the hated" Star Wars films. I am glad they are being favourably reevaluated
I'm truly amazed at all the positive comments. When this came out in 1999 followed by the rest of the prequel trilogy, there was nothing but hate, hate, and more hate. Now, it seems like everyone loves this. Who knows? Maybe in 20 years they'll love the sequel trilogy.
It was the loud minority who bashed the prequels aka ot purist. They hate anything that doesn’t look like the original trilogy. As far as the sequels go, I don’t think they’ll get love 50 years from now

They showed it to advertise the movie. imagine in 1999 seeing a double bladed lightsaber, you would want to see more of it

Damn you old old huh
I was born too late to witness the prequels in movie theaters, feelsbadman
Despite their flaws, Lucas’s films had more originality and imagination than the recent films.
@Michael McGrath sequels are just trash copies of the originals
Imagination as in an inconsistent plot line. I feel like the entirety of the plot in the prequels was only accurate to that one scene with Obi-Wan giving Luke the brief history of his father in episode IV. I don’t understand how the same person wrote the originals and prequels and overlooked so many problems and inconsistencies in something he wrote himself.
Originality and imagination do not equal good films. As is evidenced by the prequels.
@JoTech It's actually very inconsistent with the original trilogy in a lot of ways, most notably in how all of the characters are portrayed.

Yup 😁
This mans name is “unpopular opinions” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
CGI wasn't dated back then, if you watch corridor crew video where they look at prequel's CGI, you will understand that. In fact it was peak CGI performance at the time and prequels were the first films to have full CGI scenes. No one has done that before.
Lunar Tuna That’s why I said it was “dated” but not actually bad.
@@l.pricetag.5207 Political scenes were needed for us to understand how a single sith could destroy republic and jedi. Romantic scenes were necessary to explain the downfall of Anakin. Not only because of that, but that was the main factor.

The second maul ignited his lightsaber, history was made
When people are reacting like this to old star wars trailers and not new ones there is a problem.

I can't believe people are seriously looking back on the prequels and saying there actually good just because the sequels are bad. I'd say both trilogies have equally bad parts, but to go back on saying the prequels were disasters which they were and then saying they were treated too harshly is just dumb. Prequels are still shit, you said it once and you probably meant it...
@@jigglemyjam774 No. Why should I?
@@baddriversofthenorcalarea500 They were bad, I agree they were enjoyable but not because they were good
Being a 9 year old kid and having this trailer pop up before a movie without any idea it was happening beforehand was so awesome.
The Phantom Menace is like a fine wine it gets better and better with age!!!!
I smell bait.
I've literally never managed to watch the whole of Episode I in a single sitting, it's that fucking unbearable. Total dogshit. What were they THINKING?
@@AlastairjCarruthers still way better than the sequels
@@mattrb8101 Nope. Of the prequels, only Revenge of the Sith was better than the sequels. And that's saying something, the sequels were trash.
Morgan Freeman he’s not wrong. So much of TPM was boring space travel and politics. People like you just like to hate what all the cool internet people hate. Eventually an new trilogy will come out and people will wax nostalgic about the sequel trilogy
@@berengerchristy6256 I just got into star wars couple months ago, and I loved TPM and thought a new hope was boring Af. The new hope was just a whiny boy being trained in a desert, rescuing a girl. What's so special about that
I love how the fanbase went from loving (yes there were a lot of people that loved The Phantom Menace back in 1999) to hating and back around to loving again.
Because the fanbase is clearly retarded. They would clap if George Lucas took a dump and put it on film.

I really enjoy the phantom menace. I was like 6 when it came out and I think it still holds up. It’s the reason I fell in love with Star Wars. I honestly love the science and politics of the prequels
Imagine going into this movie knowing you're gonna get a 2v1 lightsaber fight
Prequels are my childhood. My older siblings introduced me to the originals when the prequels were coming out. Episodes 1-6 are my movies
Michael McGrath
You lost me when you included episode 9
I saw this movie four times in theater. It was amazing back then. Still one of my favorite Star Wars movies.
Hmmm nah
You forgot to mention the overacting and the overrated CGI effects.
the opening space battle i had my jaw dropped the whole time, i'd never seen anything close to that epic on a big screen before, and i was an adult at the time lol
still love it. what a great opener!
I remember keeping my computer on for about 20 hours straight downloading this trailer on dialup as a .mov file so that I could watch it in QuickTime. Watched it endlessly.
Crowd during trailer "Yeaaahhh , wooow!!"
When Jar Jar appears ".........."
All it took for the prequels to get accepted was Disney royally screwing up the sequels
Well i always loved the prequels, exept the phantom menace i didn't like it a lot, but the 2, 3, and 5 are my favourite films in Stae Wars
Happy282 2?!? That’s a saucy take, elaborate please.
I was there for them; tons of people liked the prequels, even if they thought there were certain parts that didn't 100% work.
As far as the sequels go, I don’t think they’ll get love 50 years from now
This is one of the most underrated films of all time, and one of the best star wars movies. It got so much right. All of you 2020 fanboys and girls need to check yourselves because you're wrecking yourselves. You can't see the forest through the trees.
