I wouldn’t of that far, the figure itself feels way more dense than most voyagers I’ve handled, and the engineering is also way more complex than most voyagers, I feel this guy does justify the leader price over all
One of the engineers said that Hasbro literally gave them a set or list of clear plastic accessories to distribute among the figures, and they had to pick which ones would work best with each; Blitzwing happened to be one of a couple they couldn't find anything that even remotely worked, so they just threw the big weird hands in with him out of necessity. It was in an interview with user questions online somewhere.
The Tank mode definately looks nice! For the plane mode, like the Titans Return Blitzwing, I prefer to view it in the way I do a Star Wars Y-Wing: A small Bomber with some aerofighter capability. Slow and less manuverable in comparison to dedicated aerofighters. Yet, it's built considerably tougher and carrying much heavier ordinance for taking out targets other small crafts simply can't compete with.
I got him recently. Something actually pretty nice I found you can do with his ‘gauntlets’ are peg the sword into one and take the ‘hand’ out, and then put it onto Blitzwing. Makes him look like he has some big sword-guard arm thing. I think it’s neat.
Very long comment ahead, but it turns out it was a forced marketing decision. Mark Maher gives us a detailed post about the line wide gimmick that was greenlit for the Legacy line BEFORE the character selection. The way this specific toyline was designed, was that all characters would come with Energon fuelled weapons and kids (and fans) could make their own weapon. We have weapon designs from Emiliano Santalucia, showing how this line wide gimmick was first proposed and then greenlit. You can see the individual weapons along with the combinations. You'll notice a uniform colour scheme and extra painted detail, which does work for a line wide gimmick. However, this was not set up to go with specific characters. So the mandate for designers was to incorporate this gimmick and those specific weapon designs. Mark Maher did a good job integrating what he could. For instance him pairing what would become Kickback's weapons was genius since they also designed the weapon to integrate with the beast mode to create and abdomen that would work for Ransack. However, not all pairings were ideal. You'll see those hands and gauntlets in the design sheet, those had to go with a release. And the design team chose to pair that one with Blitzwing. They did find ways to integrate it into the tank mode for extra fire power. So that's the explanation, it was a mandate and they tried their best to integrate the weapons and design them in a way that worked best for particular characters. And Blitzwing got the gauntlets. Also, one would assume a large accessory like that also helped further give an idea of value for a leader class toy that is the size of a traditional voyager class toy, even though Hasbro did confirm that the classes are no longer about size.
Best keep those gauntlets are kinda cool looking for me and it's definitely best attaching them on the jet mode, that way Blitzwing doesn't look out if proportion with the tank on the bottom (is there a way to change the tank threads though?) Ironically enough, I'm getting this exact figure in the mail on Wed. Officially my first transformer of 2023! And yeah, I'll be leaving those 'hands' in a bag somewhere. I may use them for something else at some point, I don't know, but they just look _way_ too goofy for Blitzwing. It's like they wanted to give him Demolisher's hands.
@@90lancaster I'm just putting the hand-parts under his wings as canons, and sticking the box parts on the back as thrusters. It looks better than having his giant hands sticking out the back, it fills out the space under his wings nicely, and those hands always looked more like canons than thrusters anyway. So it all works out.
Okay, while I do NOT like this toy, and even I can see that the tank parts were horribly handled in jet mode, I just imagined them as a booster system of sorts. Kind of like the Hyperdrive Ring from the Star Wars Prequels, or like the modifications for space combat with the Wing Gundam Suits. Like, Blitzwing has to use this booster to allow himself to fly outside of a planet's atmosphere. Trying to compete with Astrotrain, or something of the like. I don't know, if it could detach it would probably be like Omega Supreme's base mode and how it just shows up when the rocket needs to transform. Does this excuse the kibble? No, but it is a way to look at it.
There's likely two separate lists of staple characters that will sell and ones that might sell, majority of the g1 characters fall into the first category, while the rest are up in the air.
My favourite Transformer character of all time but feel like that more lore should of been explored after Galvatron made him unwelcome into the Decepticon's empire again and he says he couldn't be a Autobot either so really wish they filled out more for him in the future.
I actually do like this blitzwing, his robot mode looks great, I also like his tank mode, his jet mode is there btw you had mistransformed on the wings. Good review though, refreshing that someone was able to get past the cockpit lol.
I mine for Half the Retail price, but honestly it worth only that. The pegs for the Energon Fists on mine have half long pegs, but even those were enough to make the fists almost break into the gauntlets. Yesterday while I was transforming his tiny-tiny back wings the back cracked at the tan part. They didn't broke off but the base has a Crack in it.
I think the 3rd parties can do it better at smaller scale partly because they are just better designs and partly because the Hasbro figures have to be designed with greater durability in mind to some extent. I say this because the 3rd party figures are usually more delicate and seem to be intended more for adult collectors than for children to play with. Either way, I'm fairly well convinced I won't be able to have a truly satisfactory Blitzwing or Astrotrain until I design and print them myself.
A simple thing like "The front of the tank is the part with the headlamps on" is to complicated for the company that also puts logos on upside down. Thank goodness this "thing" when on sale quickly as he's a triple changer that two of the modes are not worth bothering with. I suppose showing the robot head forwards in tank mode sticks out a bit less, though arguably looks even worse. I'd say the front bumper mod part is pretty much an essential buy for this guy. I think the sword might be a bit small and he really didn't need two guns either if it means they are a bit small too. The design implementation leads to silly choices like two cockpits and the whole upper body being made effectually upside down to the way it would have worked better. Even the G1 toy doesn't have that much crap under the wings, or if it does it hides it better rather than draws attention to it. I think a few minor design tweaks could have saved this guy, but they make toys in such a hurry now, we got what we got. which is an ill thoughtout mess. Also Cartoon accuracy is what Super 7 is for, So if they go to far down that rude it throws the entire concept of Robots in Disguise in the trash if the disguise is heavily compromised by poor design choices, partly inspired by cheaply produced cartoon from 4 decades ago. It's not like we are supposed to think Gi Joe's guns really fire Lasers are we ? So give transformers the same consideration please. and make the vehicles look like they are supposed to do at least as an option in the transformation. a 3rd party is also making a Blitzwng with no tails too and it just annoys me as it's entirely down to Sunbow being stupid and repeating someone else's mistakes makes you the fool as much as them. Blitzwing is "supposed" to be an Mig 25 and as such should have tails. So yeah Blitqing... buy him for the robot mode for a big discount = otherwise ignore him.
Energon Monsters ended up being the Legacy Pretenders. IIRC there were 2 listings for core energon monsters and one deluxe. That's Iguanus, Bomb-burst, and Skullgrin.
I have the T30 Blitzwing which is pure butt compared to this so it was an easy decision to get this. If I had the Titans Return, it would be a harder decision.
I can see Hasbro eventually taking the tank barrel/treads off(because they just form a backpack in robot mode) remodeling the shoulders into some sort of intake vents, and then we'd have a decent jet former
i just bought Blitzwing days ago and all i can tell he's a very good figure! i just love his Mig-25/Mig-31 that's too chubby and bricky and the Type 74 G1 Tank mode!

The tank and robot are really great with the tank Barrell moving up and the wrist/waist/and ankle joints and the silver paint. The headsculpt is the best of all 3 chug Blitzwing. I only had the old Thrilling 30 one until now and I didn't think much of him. Legacy has issues but it's still great.
From my limited research, trying to figure out what was up with the gauntlets, they're just a mandate & Blitzwing was saddled with them. Someone had the idea to do Energon infused weapons as the line gimmick (I prefer included extras, over integrated gimmicks that compromise engineering), & the weapons were developed before deciding who got what. I'm assuming Blitzwing got the gauntlets for 2 reasons, his size works better for them, than a Deluxe, & they could actually be incorporated into his altmodes (bad as the jet boosters are, the missile pods kinda work).
Those hands might be for some kind of special attack pose and they attach to the jet mode just for storage. Just don't look at the back of the jet if you have attached them there.
I bought that figure but when I transformed it into robot the knees wouldn’t transform. The pegs wouldn’t line up. We had to return it so instead I got legacy/kingdom galvatron. It was still a good figure though!
Really don't like it. I'm all for animation accurate, but not the reproduction of obvious errors. Robot mode is 85% good. Tank mode is 80% good. Jet mode is 20% good. Guns are 100% good. Sword & Mitts are 10% good. (Only because the mitts make ok titan master thrones.) Got one as a gift. I'm going to mod it into a Decepticon Heavy Weapons Ground Soldier from the Devastation video game. Gonna strip out all the jet kibble and try to incorporate the treads into the legs. If that doesn't work out then I'll try doing the opposite and strip off all the tank parts and turn him into an OC or maybe an obscure character if I can find a good candidate.
I really scaled back my Hasbro stuff. I didn't think this figure and some of the others are worth $55 US. Raise the price...raise the QC (floppy knees) and they've failed to do this.

I agree. I don't understand how Mechfanstoys can do a better version of both of these characters at legends scale. My biggest issue with Blitzwing is the fact that they didn't even try with the jet. I get that one mode is usually compromised in a Triple Changer. But they barely put in any effort for his jet or tank mode.
Sorry but, nope! The gauntlets are completely useless! The energon monsters were just the pretenders. Basically, they're here to inflate the price point... it's a useless, unwanted, "bonus" to try and convince us that this voyager is a leader class.

The Large Hands are most likely a direct homage to Transformers Devastation as Blitzwing did weld them in the game via the boss battle
I love this figure. All his modes and the way he transform into each is well done in my opinion.

It might be a bit of a stretch but the gauntlets could have been for a scrapped idea for a legacy version of Cybertron Scattershot.

Like all Triple Changers, there's always a weak mode, and in Blitzwing's case it's almost always the jet.
Still enjoyed the figure, though.

For a $50+ figure, it’s a real disappointment. The plane looks bad, and doesn’t even have all four tail fins. Honestly, I like the TR figure better.
