R.I.P. to Sam English as well. Despite being blameless in Thomson’s death, I can’t imagine the pain he felt both during and after his footballing career after the incident.
That part regarding the “seven years of joyless sport” really hit me hard. May he find peace as well. 🙏🙏❤️

@@FeatherWait yeah... maybe we know how dangerous goalkeeper task back in the day before modern rule. Non the less he still played which make that passion resonate with us fans. That why we can't help but feel a little sad.

If you go on the Celtic stadium tour they still talk about Thompson openly as a hero of the club and show footage of his death in a video montage of the club's history. Genuinely moving and tragic stuff, but its a mercy to know that this legend of Glasgow lives on in spirit in the game, both him and Sam

First off, thank you for the blessing that is Tifo Football. Everytime I watch a video on your channel, I learn something new every single time and I love it!
Regarding Thomson, I’m emotional tbh. A young man who was cut down too soon, but remembered by many from both sides of the Old Firm rivalry and Scottish football overall.
I’d never heard of him before, so I thank you Tifo for discussing him. R.I.P. John Thomson. 🙏🙏❤️

When Celtics greatest ever XI was announced , it was astonishing that John Thomson's name was not among them . No disrespect to Ronnie Simpson , but Johnny Thomson was regarded , by all of those who saw both of them play in their prime , as Celtics best ever goalkeeper . I suppose with all such polls it's a generational thing .

A young lad named John Thomson,
From the west of Fife he came,
    To play for Glasgow Celtic,
And to build himself a name.
On the fifth day of September,
'gainst the Rangers club he played,
From defeat he saved the Celtic,
Ah but what a price he paid.
The ball rolled from the centre,
Young John ran out and dived,
The ball rolled by; young John lay still,
For his club this hero died.
I took a trip to Parkhead,
    To the dear old Paradise,
And as the players came out,
Sure the tears fell from my eyes.
For a famous face was missing,
From the green and white brigade,
And they told me Johnny Thomson,
His last game he had played.
    Farewell my darling Johnny,
Prince of players we must part,
No more we'll stand and cheer you,
On the slopes of Celtic Park.
Now the fans they all are silent,
As they travel near and far,
No more they'll cheer John Thomson,
    Our bright and shining star.
So come all you Glasgow Celtic,
Stand up and play the game,
For between your posts there stands a ghost,
    Johnny Thomson is his name.

Football back then until the 60s was bretty brutal and hard hitting, unlike today with the dives and all. Btw, this isnt a rent about the current game, today players are more protected. But i believe the sport would be more respected or the players, if they simply wouldnt dive so much. And werent spoiled brats. Players back then got brutal tackles and played mostly for the love of the game, representing their culture and country, while having double jobs.
And awesome piece by Tifo as always, what a tragic but beautiful story at the same time. So great to know these stories in a simply, captiviting way.

Would it be possible to do an episode like this on Nouri? I just rewatch this episode after a long time and it reminded me so much about what happened just a few years ago. Besides that, Dutch television resently did an interview with Nouri his brother and a few of his good friends (van de beek, de jong and bergwijn). I believe that tifo could make the Nouri story just into a very touching story. And shiny a light on one of Dutch footballs' brighest futher stars. Whose career was sadly cut short.

As a Celtic supporter I always got told as a young bhoy by my next door neighbor who was a friend of Jimmy McGrory growing up in the Garngad( Royston) that Sam English was totally innocent of anything John also said Sam English had every right to go for the ball god only knows how he felt after John Thompson died later that night maybe 7 years of joyless football tells us he just didn't enjoy it anymore I wonder if he pulled out of challenging for the ball with the keeper after he left rangers this was heartbreaking all round RIP John ynwa hh RIP Sam

The Thomson family never blamed Sam English. They treated him with respect.
