I got mine about 8-9 years ago. Still going strong despite the mileage. A few tips for using yours in a shop setting. True the base and fence, there is a phenomenal video on this subject by the building guru. Make your own zero clearance throat for faster cut line ups and no splinter cuts. Make your own auxiliary fence as well, same reasons as the throat as well as larger crown capacity. There are a few things I’d change about mine but the biggest would be a gear driven bevel adjustment, and that’s only because I build geometrical art shelving. So say if the shelves are hexagonal, getting the bevel perfect can take me over an hour with the play in the mechanism. That being said, all saws have their quirks, I prefer the Bosch’s quirks over all the others quirks. Hope yours lasts as long as mine.

I have the Bosch 5312 12-Inch Dual Bevel Slide Compound Miter Saw that I purchased in 2012, I love my saw! It's a beast! Yes the sliders take lots of space, but it is worth it. I saw a TH-camr (sorry, I don't recall who it was) put the saw on heavy duty drawer slides so when he uses the saw he doesn't have to move the bench, or accommodate for the long slides. I still haven't done it, but it is on my To-do list. Congratulations on your new saw!

I bought the MSD12 and was frustrated with calibration, which never worked. I relied on my older experiences with German Bosch but I was proven wrong with terrible quality control since the manufatuing left Germany. I have this saw, I bought it about 7 years ago.
Good points: space saving in the back, capacity of cut.
Bad points or I should say do not buy it points: saw is inaccurate when I use it gliding: always out of square at the front of the cut by way too much ( almost a 1/16 at full capacity). When I try to adjust it to square it will automatically be off square at the other end. There's probably a fault at the arm mechanism. I am sure of this because when the head is locked in chop position without gliding the head it will perform square cuts, then open the glide and cut a wider piece and bingo, same fault at the front of the cut.
Other negative: the fence are way too floppy. Not good when cutting a board standing against the fence ( say like baseboard), it'll through you off square even when trying to control my grip.
Next negative: adjustments are a pain: square to table adjustments are in the back of the arm towards the bottom where you can barely fit the tools to do it, tighten the Allen ranch too quick and you moved your setting, do it again, and again and again.
Adjusting the fences square to the table is not possible, it's a tightening mechanism that supposed to hold fences square when you lock them.
Next: the 15 amps power doesn't seem to be there. I still have my old Hitachi 10" a $250 range saw at the time I got it: it'll go through anything you put under the blade like a hot knife through butter. Hard wood, wet 2x lumber... This Bosch doesn't come even close to it for power. I sometimes use both on the same job and while going from one saw to the other repeatedly the difference is REALLY striking.
Next : there are definitely not enough stops at the bevel head tilt: at this price range they should have these for when you do repetitive work so your parts come axactly at the same angle.
I hesitated a long time between this and the comparable DeWalt. I've used many DeWalt saws with my friends. They're robust, easy to adjust and trustworthy. I'm biting my fingers now.
Will probably sell it and get a DeWalt 780

Not seen this saw before, but I went for the Makita for similar reasons. It does have the rails, but the saw slides on the rails which are fixed in the base, rather than being fixed on the rails and the rails sliding in the base like the DeWalt. It also has a rotary lock for the tilt right at the front near the handle so again no reaching round the back. The LS1219L seems to be the similar size. I actually got the smaller 10" version the LS1019L so I can put it in the van single handed.

  • @MBNB85

I loved the idea of this. Bosch makes good stuff. I had a problem with the saw not cutting square. I went through hours of adjustment. I mean hours and hours. Ultimately, while the blade was 90° square to the fence, the arm mechanism does not move completely perpendicular to the fence. It translates slightly, say 3° off dead center. When fully extended, the blade would still be 90° to the fence, but 3/32" or so to the right of of where it began. The net effect was a board wasn't cut square. If you can picture it, the blade should travel away from the fence like this: | but it traveled like this: \ even if the blade itself was 90° to the fence the whole time. In the end I returned it.

I bought this when it first landed several years ago - I had researched it before it became available. I agree with the comments on the questionable accuracy of 'square'. I'm not into finish carpentry or cabinet making yet, so the accuracy has been acceptable for me to date. I am hoping the square can be adjusted when it needs to be more accurate. Otherwise, I love the saw. I would definitely buy this again for my needs.

Great review. I sold my 12” sliding compound miter for the same reason…..it was just too long and took up so much space. I’d seen this saw several years ago and knew the minute I saw it it was an ingenious design and I’d have to have it. Right out of the box all the settings were spot on. It is indeed the smoothest saw I’ve ever used. It is heavy but I’ve come to appreciate the weight as it feels like it’s bolted the the bench. The only drawback I’ve experienced is the dust collection, it’s terrible. In fact it’s the worst I’ve ever used. Other than that I love it.

I have the 10 inch Bosch and it is awesome. I don’t get the complaints about the dust suction: some people think it is superior, some inferior, and my experience is just about in the middle. I.e., it is ok and no better than other saws. I agree with you that the only negative is the weight. Even the 10” is a beast! But that means, to me at least, that it is built to last. Great acquisition and review! 👍

We have one at work. We don’t do any mite ring so my fave feature is that it is easy to find the mark on the board wherever you’ve put it by raising the blade then setting it down at the spot. Also like the blade brake.

  • @rpeebles

I love my Bosch 12" glide mitre. Very accurate and simple to square up the first time. If I am cutting angles I put my square on the blade to confirm 90 degrees when I put it back. There is just a tiny bit of play on the 90 detent but that really only comes into play if you are cutting boards wider than 10" so square it up and tighten down the front handle. I think all mitres suck for dust collection but the little bag does a pretty good job. I didn't bother hooking it to my dust system and just dump the bag when it gets full. I am very happy with this saw!

I had a really cheap miter saw for over a decade and just took it outside the garage to break down stuff. I then moved up to a 12-inch saw when I did a new crown in our home and it was fine. I kept it on a tough-built rolling stand and it was great for the time. Now, I am back doing more crowns on a remodel and I picked up the 12-inch glide after looking at all kinds of videos about miter saws. I was a bit apprehensive since I had read about deflection of the blade when extended and also that once you beveled the saw it was no longer square and had to be adjusted. To be fair, I have only used it a few times since purchase and it has performed great. My saw was square and dead on right out of the box and I have not noticed any deflection in normal use. I did get a really good blade for it and so far, it is the best investment for my garage shop second only to my Grizzly Table Saw.

I have that Bosch miter saw with the gravity stand, which makes moving the saw a breeze. I also made a box around the saw and attached to the stand for dust collection with 2x 4" ports to my dust collector. I capture much more dust now than hooking my shop vac to the dust port that came with the saw and I don't get saw dust on anything behind the saw anymore. I can't collapse the stand anymore with the dust box but I can still wheel it around. I also attached 3" high multi-tracks to the fence with a stop on both ends of the multi-track and can add additional lengths of multi-track so I can use the stops for longer boards. I have the multi-tracks supported to the sides of the dust box because I don't want to risk cracking the aluminum Bosch fence mount. The multi-tracks with extensions and stops comes in handy when making window and door frame stiles for accuracy repeatability.
One thing to note: If you transport the Bosch saw from job sites, make sure you secure the motor/saw blade assembly so it can't move around during transportation with straps. My saw got so out of whack that I couldn't square it up perfectly. I just bought another one which was square out of the box and if you have a Menards in your area, it goes for around $578 during their 11% rebate sale.

However , I was really happy with my 30 year old Hitachi 8 1/2 inch till it died on site - and that had met all my needs till then . The Bosch for building , general carpentry - perfect , cut capacity probably overkill for most people , for extreme fine detail I think I would go for something else - the Kapex or the newer cordless Bosch . Must say I do love the newer Bosch tools overall .

I have this saw, and love it... for the same reason, so smooth... only thing I noticed is when reaching across to do a lengthy cut and I have to flip the board over to finish the cut.. there's a small amount of deflection I find happening, could be my saw specifically, maybe something needs to get adjusted to ensure 100% squareness... but something to watch out for... I usually give myself a little room to play with and shave off as needed to get a "mostly" straight, 90 degree cut...

I have had mine for several years now and love it. I have been able to get an even wider cut by using a Jimmy Diresta trick of lifting the side closest to you up, probably not recommended or all that safe, rather than flipping the piece wing cut over and trying to line it up. As a retired cabinet maker, I have to ask - what happened to radial arm saws? Next to table saws, they were the primary saws in a small shop. The standard minimum cross cut was 25". They're great for wide cross cuts, if that's what you're looking for. Difficult for miter and compound cuts though.

I have this saw and it’s in a home workshop environment mounted into a mitre saw station.
Can you please do a tune up vid showing how you calibrate it it’s hard to find good ones out there there are a few I’ve managed to find but not many and want to know if there’s a better or different way to do it then I’ve been struggling with.
The saw is great but I disagree that it’s as good as the festool that other comments have mentioned.
There is a couple of other draw backs you didn’t mention that people might be interested in:
    1. It’s an absolute pig at dust collection, all mitre saws are bad but this one in particular hence why there are so many videos on improving it.
    2. The trenching feature is unreliable the glide action is awesome and smooth but it’s “springy” making consistent grove cuts difficult.
    3. Your comments about being able to run it run up to the wall is correct and the reason I bought the saw. But for some stupid reason they put all the adjustment and calibration bolts in the back meaning that you can’t recalibrate the saw in situ and the saw is heavy. Blade angle adjustment is also only positive in one direction which is crusting with how heavy the motor is.
The saw cuts great and it’s got a nice smooth action but Bosch could really make a few simple changes to really upgrade this saw.

I've had one of these for years (and I have no idea where the color on Amazon comes from, but mine is a darker "Bosch" teal). I don't know how, but I had another GC use my Bosch on a job site to do a compound-mitre, and he was able to cut off and inch of the sliding backstop. No one knew until I was cleaning up art the end of the day. BTW, this is a really "clean" saw too, the dust bag actually catches like 85-90% of the dust (until it gets full). Also, another thing that drives me nuts, no detent for ZERO degrees vertical.

I've wanted one of those for a long time, but because of the weight, it's more suited to workshop applications with semi permanent location. (Which is the main purpose of that system, so it can be placed against a wall). I saw some test done of them a few years ago and they found that their glide system was more stable with less wiggle that the regular rail system. I have a 10" DW slider, which they don't make anymore (except for the cordless). If I ever have to replace it, the 10" Bosch glider is my top choice.

Hey Ethan I am putting together my kit here but started with my dads. I have a Makita, ( turns out a chop saw ) and an ancient table saw in a stand. I have only used the table saw and I don’t care for it. It feels unsafe. So I trust your opinion and here’s what I’m working with: I currently live in a condo and figure if I can get a decent set up in this place, anything will be an improvement. I’m thinking either this saw maybe the smaller one, and a Makita router full kit to do drawers and trim etc. I don’t have a problem having the guys at Home Depot do my longer cuts on plywood etc. is there any light you can shed on this? I would like to get the Makita rolling mitre saw table thingy so I can keep this in the coat closet. I have to take all my tools outside to build anything because I can’t get dust in my sewing machines. I saw your dust collecting video just now and appreciate that to use in a pinch. It’s a weird set up for now, but I’m pimping this place out and going to make a bomb of money off it in the near future. Or just stay if I can get a saw etc I can keep in the coat closet or the laundry nook. Haha. Too many shoes in my bedroom closet😉I’m a weirdo I know, but I have to build stuff or I’m kind lost. Oh and sewing is just as bad. It’s amazing pulling it all together, but I’m pretty cramped in here at the moment. I’ll be starting my YT channel pretty soon and I’ll keep you posted if I share any of your advice/ideas (as well I’m sure you would like to add sewing to your list of talents)and I’ll buy this bad boy off your link, ok? Thanks for all your incredibly helpful info! Truly enhanced so much.
