Royal Enfield is dialed into something important that the other players are missing.
Low CC doesn’t have to mean “beginner bike”. You can put your best work into a light or middleweight bike and there are people out there (many people) who would snap it up.
KTM 390 Adventure, BMW G310GS, Honda CB500X, etc are all giving us half measures. If you want their best work, you have to be ok with owning a giant bike for off road use.
I really hope Royal Enfield is successful here and that their success raises the bar for low displacement adventure bikes.
Americas favourite phrase
@@johna6968 your reply was too brief to really know what you’re trying to say
Who would try to thrash the 450 through the stunning scenery of the Himalayas.. Slow it down and enjoy the breathtaking views along the journey. Hence low displacement 👍
@@markthompson5788 who said anything about thrashing? Oh that was you. You’re hearing things that nobody said.
I agree 💯! You have to appreciate a company that listens and delivers. They were already killing it with 200,000 units of the 411 sold worldwide. They could have just milked it, but they realized how many sells they lost because it was under powered, or some other common complaint. It occured to them, if we had it to do over, how could we get THOSE customers to buy an Himalayan. This bike will exceed sells what the 411 did. I'm tempted to buy a 411 and store it for future value. Imagine, rolling out a mint condition 411 in about 25 years. People will beg you to sell it, for a huge profit.
Folks in India we are so jealous!
The terrain and the bike..
This is adventure in your neighborhood.
Royal Enfield always belonged to this land!
This kind of terrain only in North India. For folks live in South/East India its just a dream.
It is a diverse geography and terrain. There are mountains in South (Ooty and Kodaikanal), Western Ghats (Sahyadris) on the west, Vindhyas in central, deserts on west and rain forests in east. So it is always fun for adventure seekers no matter where you are in India.@@noobieta06
Yo
You are acting like we need passport to come to north India?
Nope. RE never “always” belonged. It was originally a UK company, that was bought by the Indians. It has a rich, mixed heritage.
@@martyn_git was a failed and forgotten UK company like its counterparts and was saved by a passionate owner.
Honestly I think this is going to be a winner throughout the globe. RE are going to do another googly and price it insanely competitively.
I'm so glad india is making quality products at an affordable price ❤ unlike some chinese product
not all Chinese though. CFMoto make excellent products and their new MT450 looks like a better proposition to me. I shall check them both out when they arrive, and with an open mind. Where I live the CFMoto importer puts a five year warranty on all the machines in their range, and the others I have ridden are pretty damn good.
@@stephenedwards3397 well said, the Himalayan looks beautiful and capable but the MT450 kicks ass!
@@stephenedwards3397As an Indian i wouldnt touch a chinese vehicle with a 10feet pole. RE has a legacy and dewp roots in Indian society. Cheap chibese knockoffs aint gonna do nothing at least in India.
I'll stick with royal enfield
Let’s not forget the new ktm790 is a badged CFmoto bike. If KTM have that much faith in CFMoto then Chinese bikes have come a long way.
This new Himalayan looks great and with 40bhp will be better for the roads and trails. I like the look and ruggedness of it but the price has to be right.
Couldn't agree more. As an owner of the previous model, price was a significant factor in getting mine. It was quite a bit cheaper than the 310GS, which sealed the deal quickly.
So, y'all want a newly designed bike, with significant upgrades, conveniences, and improved performance & capabilites, for the old price? Let's just forget about inflation, the money spent on designing, engineering, research & development, tooling, testing, and marketing. Take your 5 to 7 year old vehicle to the dealer and tell him you want a new one for the same price.
Literally no one said they wanted it for the price of the old one, simply that the price had to be right to justify it or else other brands look more appealing at higher prices with proven track records. This is REs first water cooled motor and only time will tell if it will be reliable. I'm a RE fan, and even I understand that if the price is over 20% of the 411 5500 MSRP (over 6600 usd) then a lot of people are going to struggle swallowing that pill.@@tangoindiamike9189
It will be around 3300 USD in India.
Previous Himalayan was around 2800 USD in India
I bet that was first thing they thought was the price ...it's India mate
That was a good report. Stands out. Comprehensive yet concise. No unnecessary fluff. Just solid. Good job, Michael and Joseph.
You've only got to watch Itchy boots, to see how practical these machines are, in real world usability. Love to see a GS, do the things, this bike can do😀😀
Itchy Boots had the old air cooled low tech model. This is a completely different motorcycle and unproven as of yet
Itchy Boots rode two different 411 models, rode them hard, and they proved to be up to the task. She is a big part of the reason why I decided to buy a brand new "old model" I absolutely love "low tech". I've been riding a Suzuki DR650 forever. It is solid and reliable. But the original Himalayan seems to be more comfortable and tractable, and certainly a LOT better looking. I have owned (and loved) a 2013 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 for 10 years. I converted it from EFI to an Amal Concentric MK1 carb, and installed an aftermarket exhaust on it. I currently have just over 22,000 miles on it. I usually ride it around 55 mph.
@@geraldscott4302 That's great, but this bike doesn't share a single bolt from the 411. Clean sheet design so nobody knows yet if it will perform well or last...
@@luisdetomaso867she's riding one now. The new one.
@@kittywampus Royal Enfield gave her a pre-production bike to try out for a few weeks in India. You think that proves anything about a bike's long term durability? Ok...
What a place to go for a press launch 🏁👌🏻🙌🏻
Just watched Itchy Boots take this bike on a Himalayan trek! It was great!
Thanks for the review.
Although I’ve never ridden one, I’ve always been a fan of the old 411cc Himalayan.
Looks like it’s time to pull the trigger on the new 450cc Himalayan.
Happy Trails!
They saw Triumph and others advancing and knew it was time to bring this. I'm still going for the Triumph because I've owned 4 of them with Yamaha and Ducati those are my brands but nothing to matter this bike looks sweet!
Those others have been following in Royal Enfields footprints since 1901.
Did not see the others in Antarctica or the Himalaya's at 19,000 feet.
Love the new triumph 400X and The Harley Davidson 440X but please do not say Royal Enfield followed " The other guy ".
@@edwardkaminsky8142 Read my comment again more closely: "They saw Triumph and others advancing ...."
@@KingCast65 I understand 👍.
No offense. Fan of dual sport!
🧐
This is perhaps the unicorn bike that only RE could release. The 450 single is probably the perfect size for a serious adventure bike. The major companies like KTM BMW Honda etc don't want to make such a bike because it will be too good. It would threaten the huge profits they make on the oversized overweight adventure bikes they sell. Instead they give us 250s and 300s that just don't have the power, or maybe the KTM 390. Honda has given us the CRF 300 but it's really only a 280, yes there is the CRF 450 but it's expensive and completely dirt focused, rather than a balanced adventure model. Then they have the 500x but it's a heavy twin really designed for their street bikes. BMW has the 310 . . . But they really want to sell you a 750 or 850 or 1400 whatever it is now. Why RE? Because they don't make big bore bikes it's that simple.
I agree. And it's an absolute mystery why Suzuki hasn't upgraded the DRZ400, which is really the bike everyone likes. The KTMs are in their own class in my opinion because they're notoriously unreliable. I'd never feel comfortable taking a 390 on any kind of trip. And the 300 dual sports really aren't much of an upgrade from the 250s, the overall capabilities are basically the same. This looks great to me, and Royal Enfield has proven to be pretty reliable overall with their new bikes. I trust them more than KTM by a long shot
BMW had the 650 single (which I own and which weighs about the same as this bike). It didn't sell well. It's not BMW afraid of selling bikes, it's that the public wants size
You are incorrect on nearly everything you stated, ktm has 350 and 500 and Thex450 l Honda is great for short highway sprints.
You didn’t mention the increased fuel capacity over the old model and the new model has tubeless tires.
And it's not Europe? That's India bro?!! I could never imagine India like this, that's beautiful 😍
Wow, it actually looks GREAT !!!
@MCN Please dont do that CRT TV static thing for the screen transitions. There are too many transitions in a short amount of time initially and that was very irritating to watch.
I just hope they won't discontinue the 411 model. Especially if they plan a decent increase in proce for the 450, it would be wise to keep both the old and the new models in the lineup
They are not..411 will continue to be sold too.
They need to up its power.....the design is timeless.....
Himalayan 411 has been cancelled
@@DeletedAccountForSure😅
great job Michael not only on the article in the paper but also this great job as always Joseph 100%
Thanks mate! :)
RE has really justified the name Himalayan. It took them a lot of development and getting it right, but they've got it there with this one.. Brilliant..
I've ordered mine and should be here soon
How you getting on with it ?
The wheelbase has been increased so more suitable for taller riders.
A real 'hats off' to RE for incorporating large screen navigation at this price point - a feature sorely lacking even on most of the mid-capacity adventure bikes in a higher price bracket
Price is going to decide if this bike is a success or not. That Triumph 400 looks a good one.
Except the Triumph is just a scrambler, which is just a road bike. It isn’t as versatile as this.
@@ohmylanta4558I’ve seen nothing on this video that any scrambler couldn’t do with decent tyres on.
it's beautiful, i am a ktm boy through and through but the complete contrast of this bike is calling me - it has so much i don't 'agree; with and i hoped for more but i also see it for what it is, i do believe i may get one as 2nd bike, it has a fight on its hands though thanks the gorgeous and very very competitive recent bikes to be released by Kove and CF - 2024 will be interesting and tough
Given the RBW throttle it's a shame they didn't add a cruise control option given it's a travel bike and even RTW travels will inevitably involve some long stretches of tar even if just to get to the fun stuff. Yes a throttle lock can help a little but it's less useful on smaller bikes.
Yeah, I don't know why manufacturers aren't doing this more. It looks like the new CF Moto 450 won't have it either. Unless these guys are making changes for the American market. The tfMoto looks like my unicorn bike, but not without cruise control.
@@MrTmax74The Kove 800x too. To be fair at least the Kove and the CFMoto use cable throttles so have an excuse, but for RE the new Himalayan is ride by wire so adding cruise control is basically just software.
I think RBW totally defeats the bare basic concept behind the bike...no way to repair out in the sticks in case of failure
@@BajabornThat is true, but then electrical failure is much less likely than a mechanical failure. It's a similar argument re carbs, vs FI. I know many love the Himalayan precisely because of its simplicity, but the new version as MCN point out is aiming to be slightly more modern and upmarket. The old one will still be available for those that want a simple life.
@@MrTmax74because it's not that simple. You're failing to consider all of the sensors that are required to turn it off. You need 2 braking sensors, a lean sensor, a traction sensor, a clutch sensor, a RPM sensor, and any other sensor needed to shut off cruise control in emergencies, and all the required programming. It's a big liability risk. So some mfrs like BMW even use radar to regulate it so you don't accidently fall asleep and run into a car in front of you.
My friend in France bought one and loves it .
Credit to them for fixing some negatives in the original. Despite all the Itchy Boots fans acting like the Himmy was fantastic, it wasn't (and that's why she moved on to Hondas, duh). It was heavy, limited clearance, underpowered, with weak brakes BUT as the Revzilla guys said it was like a mule or burro that kept plugging along. The changes were needed because there IS competition. NOTE for me the biggest issue with RE bikes has been the very short maintenance windows with valve checks every 3000 miles. My SV650 has it's first check at 15000. A CRF300L is 16000. No matter how "easy" it might be to do it yourself, having to do it that often is silly. If this model fixes all those issues for a decent $, great. If it doesn't, I'd rather take a look at the new CFMoto 450MT or a used BMW F650.
Looking at the footage, suspensions are absolutely fantastic.. Specially the front one..
Keep it cheap! It’s what we want. Value for money. It’s why I bought my first one!
100% agree. I’m worried they think they’ve got some amazing bike worth £6500 no chance
@@bencluroe4183 I’m just on my fourth Royal Enfield now!
Rubbish. People scream for more power and features, then when it’s offered, people still complain.
@@ChopperChad I don’t want more power or technology. I want value for money. And there are many more like me.
I’m with your comments. I want a wheel each end and something to push it along in the middle. If i wanted fly by wire I would have done so years ago.
Do people really think the electronics will stand the test of time?
This bike is smack in the center of what anyone needs. It’s like they sat back and watched the whole gs buffalo sized dirt “adventure” bike which are a major pain in the ass to really enjoy off road they’re more of a burden than a blast. Nailed it. Just plain nailed it. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it around 5899.99 or 6299.00 in the states it’s a major move forward for Royal Enfield and I applaud it. This is twisting my choice for my next bike sideways
Be interested to ride one but really not a fan of the electrical package. Part of the charm of the 411 is it’s just simple mechanical biking.
I had the opportunity to ride its predecessor on a four hour round trip tour. Excellent bike, especially for the money. First time I’d been off-road in 30 years, and loved ever minute. I think if they can do $5,999 USD they have a winner.
We need more Indian bike manufacturers to bring their bikes to the UK to stop us being swamped with chinese bikes...
I think quoting £4k for the original is a bit misleading, it ended up around £5k at the start of 2023 so I'm sure this will be closer to £6k. It will be interesting to see how much when it's finally released.
People are saying 7,000 USD right now. But they would incredibly foolish to price it that high. Time to see if RE is going to be a successful company or if they just had dumb luck once.
That's my guess too, somewhere between $6500 and $7000. @@domenik8339
6500 eur in France
@@domenik8339the euro markets are quoting 6k so very much possible it'll be 7k usd
Prices are up on the RE UK site, and from memory it's £5600 plus OTR charges, and the top of the Range is £6300 plus OTR. I can't help buy think personally that's just to much money, for what it is. Time will tell I guess, it looks nice though.
It needs to be well built, reliable, easy to maintain & easy to repair. If this is achieved, then this will be a big step forward from the current RE411, if not were back to our throwaway culture.
It looks to me like the riding position has got a fairly acute knee bend and for that reason alone I can't have one and a Scram 411 is likely to be my next RE and I think will put off older , less supple riders ( yep that's me! ) But I'm sure it will steal sales from the 400 triumph and introduce younger riders to the marque. I'm sure that's because it favours a better standing-position and I'm a tad disappointed that I will not be embracing this latest ground-breaking ( for RE at least ) Tech! 😥
I wish to check this out during the test ride since acute knee angle will not be comfortable for long rides for me

Looking forward to riding the 452 up to Khardung La Pass in 2024 👍
I heard that sprokets are 15F/47R
Hoping they make a scram version if so keep it below 5k and I'd be very interested .
I'm thinking they're going to put the engine in some other upgraded models but with a more traditional Royal Enfield look. That's actually something I would consider.
@@MrTmax74 I agree mate I loved the scram but it was really under powered so fingers crossed 🤞
A Scrambler version based on this new 450 platform has been spotted testing since last year. Perhaps it would break cover sometime in 2024. But rumour has it that RE would retain the current gen Scram as well (with its air-cooled engine upgraded slightly to 440cc) as a more affordable scrambler.

Dear MCN, credibility is very important and you shouldn't put it at risk.
Your last post about Garmin navigation was clearly not the latest idea.
That's why you received a lot of negative feedback. You have blocked the comment section on it.
Am I smelling an inability to deal with criticism or is this already censorship?
As I just said, credibility is very important but also fragile.
I wish you much more success with balance in the future.
Cheers.
Royal Enfield have now released the official UK prices for the new Himalayan as follows.
Base version. £5,750
Pass version £5,850
Summit versions.
Hanle Black. £6,050
Kamet white (tubeless). £6,250
Hanle black (tubeless option). £6,300.... To much for 450cc and one cylinder.....
No matter how much the Himalayan gets updated, the original Himalayan would always be a well sought motorcycle (now that it has been discontinued). It's a counterbalanced engine which displaces somewhere between their UCE350s and UCE500s which makes enough power for highways in India.
Love the bike, not so much the ride by wire wich i think adds a possible failure when riding alone in inhospitable places.

I bought my Honda 300 Rally for £6'200. I've spent £2k more on it to make it right. More with luggage. If this is as complete as its looks then £6k would be a bargain. Might not be as good as the Honda off -road I suspect, but anyhow......My guess is £7k 🙂
I think RE will keep it, in the base model, sub 7k GBP. As for the people on here expect a motorcycle like this to be sub 6k GBP - delusional🙄

Chinese junk. Indian products >>>>> chinese. Watch several videos of longer term reviews or more miles and things are already falling apart. RE is tried tested and now respected across the globe. Indian manufacturers like Bajaj, TVS, Hero are the largest in the world for a reason. Lots of chinese bikes available in India as well, usually cheaper than indian bikes. Some failed and wrapped their shops up, some will soon as noone wants them. People are happier paying little more for much more quality.
Soooo beautiful bike!!!! Do you think it is beginner friendly? Any bad vibrations or heat from the engine? Thanx
The horsepower is low enough to be manageable for a beginner. The weight is heavy enough to keep it planted. I’d def point a beginner this way. But if you need something right now, today, I’d point to the BMW G310GS.

Sounds like a thoroughly capable bike, though why an off road 21in front wheel, with 'adventure' tyres? A comparison with the Fantic 500 Rally would be interesting. Although branded a scrambler, most of the basics - power, torque, suspension travel, ground clearance, brakes - are similar. The Fantic has 30kg less weight, 7cm less wheelbase and a 19 in front wheel....with offroad tyres. I might have given the RE a thought when I bought the Fantic a couple of months ago... and then rode it to Italy, having fitted 'adventure' tyres. A tolerable! 3x7 hours a day in the saddle taught me it's much more than a fun scrambler and the low weight is a big plus.
Do some real offroading over rocks and ruts and that 21" will save your ass
@@iamrobot396 I agree! But then R.E should fit the right (knobbly) tyre for that job, rather than the compromise semi street adventure tyre of the test bike. They need to make up their mind whether this is a bike mainly for serious off roading, or mixed use, when a skinny 21in wheel has more cons than pros.
@@aurigacap8584 No adventures bikes come with knobbly tires as they are terrible on road and cause a lot of vibrations and wear and tear on the highways. You can certainly go ahead and replace them to your preferred tyre type but to say the bike should come with stock knobby tyres is absurd. No manufacture does that unless it's an off-road only focused bike. Also 21" have a much larger tyre selection for off road than 19"
