    Fun fact: Heat Wave replacing Big Trouble Little Zombie was a result of an interesting limitation. PopCap felt that BTLZ would not work on the DS's screen, which only has a resolution of 256x192 pixels. Didn't stop them from including the original minigame on the iPhone, which only had a resolution of 480x320.

    • @goldenpig6453
      @goldenpig6453 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      In all fairness, a 320p screen is a lot more pixels to work with. If you were to shrink the zombies in the DS mode even further, you'd only have like, 40-50 pixels max per zombie, meaning you'd likely have a lot of trouble distinguishing between them, especially if you were actually holding your DS 2 feet away from your face (which let's be real, nobody did)

    • @choomchoom4531
      @choomchoom4531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      in fact, i think the game itself actually looks so bad in this video specifically because it is screen recorded, and you aren’t seeing it on the actual ds screen, if you look at footage where someone is recording footage from the ds screen, it actually doesnt even really look pixely at all, but the screen recording totally butchers the graphics by showing all of the individual pixels because you aren’t meant to see it like that.

    I can barely recall a random place online saying that the creator of Plants vs Zombies, George Fan, apparently had the idea for a DS port for a good while. So maybe that’s one of the reasons this port exists.
    One of the only few instances of the DS version being harder that I noticed is that the Jack in the box Zombies explode in a different way. Resulting in needing to change strategies just a bit.
    2 of the 3 new mini-games for it are pretty fun, minus the weird mic feature on one of them. I weirdly have a tough time with Homerun Derby. It’s like the game has a tough time telling if I’m swiping the stylus up or down.
    It’s really weird how the online DSi version has a good amount of the features removed. I thought the DSi is supposed to be a bit more powerful than the original DS. Although the exclusive Zombie Trap mini-game in it looks weirdly neat.

Somewhat of a downgrade to the classic version, but overall I find the chunky graphics to be quite cute, and there’s some very charming extras thrown in from what I’ve seen. No matter how unneeded this port was, it was my first ever experience with Plants vs. Zombies and I grew up playing this version of the game. It holds such a special place in my heart, and you have to give Popcap credit; they included just about every single aspect of the original, in addition to the DS exclusive mini games which are both fantastic and fun to play. I also really enjoyed the pixel artstyle and "pixelated" music tracks. Gives more variety and makes the DS version stand out from the crowd. Lastly, I love the custom seed packet art and top screen "level progress" feature, it was such a nice touch.

  • @squiddog8933

    Here's some notable differences to gameplay between the DS game and the original:
    Only 9 seed slots (as mentioned in the video). This is likely because a 10th slot wouldn't fit on the small touchscreen.
    Cob cannons are severely nerfed; they take about 15 seconds to shoot and explode rather than about 2 seconds on other platforms.
    Cattails are very buggy and their spikes often miss the zombie they're targeting. This makes blovers pretty much essential in this version.
    Your progress doesn't get saved mid-level in this version. This means when you're playing Survival Endless you have to keep your DS running or you'll lose all your progress.
    The game crashes whenever there are too many zombies on screen making Survival Endless pretty much impossible anyway.
    That being said I always loved the artstyle of this game and the fact that it's even on the DS in the first place.

    This was my first version of pvz. I just love to see other people talk about it. My cousin first showed it to me when I was a kid. She bragged that she had beaten the game four times, after which the entire game progress was apparently reverted/deleted. Other weird things is that since the edition can't have so many zombies on it, normal survival endless strats don't work the same, and you have to play it all in one go anyhow. I've also had a ton of weird glitches, including one where a gargantuar was cut in two Darth Maul style. There was even an unused texture of its spine when the bug happened, which was cool to see. Essentially, I love this version of the game.

    If it weren't for the DSi version, I probably would've have heard of PvZ for a long time. In fact, I didn't know it was on mobile until middle school

    I actually grew up with this version. I remember there was a glitch where the imatator version of torch wood had inverted colors instead of grayscale colors, and I thought it was cool.

    I remember playing the DS Port for the first time being so shocked when I saw Endless Mode. I felt so bad for the developers and was even more surprised when I reached day 10 without my DS spontaneously combusting.

    The DS version is actually a lot different from the mobile version. The DS version has basically everything the PC version does except 10 seed slots. While the phone version doesn’t have survival mode

    I first played PvZ on DS when it released since I had a DS and found a copy on the ground after by chance one day and played it every single day until my sister broke the DS. I forgot about it till 2016 when I had my own phone and was there for the release of PvZ Heroes which since I had my own phone to Google stuff looked up the first game and replayed it on both console/mobile so that's how I assumed it look since it had been so many years since I saw the DS version.
    I didn't know how low quality it actually was till I saw this which is insane to think just playing the more polished versions made me remember the game as being higher quality

    I grew up with the smooth mobile port of pvz but dang is the pixel art and the music of the day port are, it's almost like pvz was destined to be a 16 bit styled game but ended up the way it it

    I think they did this not just because of the install base, and also the fact that they realized that the stylus would work perfectly.

    I actually have the dsiware version ported onto my 2ds
    I didn't realize at first the lack of content until I got it, didn't have a phone at the time so it was all that I had
    So now I have both versions of the game xD

    I grew up with this game man I thank god every day they ported pvz to the ds. I tried pvz on my cousins computer but i didn't have one as a kid (i was like 10) so the ds was my only option. And man i probably sunk like 100 hours into that airplane minigame alone lol.

    Thank you for this video. I recently bought a copy of this game to play on my 2DSXL and was surprised at how crappy it was (graphics, performance, etc). Now I realize that it was released over a decade ago for the original DS. Wasn't worth the $15 I paid for it, but I'll probably finish it anyway 😅

    Kind of crazy to think how quickly technology changes. When this came out just a year ago the only way to play doom eternal on a handheld was a switch remake. Really don't appreciate my deck enough

    Everyone says on roof levels you have to put pea shooters starting on the 5th column. It still shoots unobstructed just fine from the 4th. Source: my 2009 DSI
