  • Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) was a German composer and arguably the master lutenist of the 18th century.

    Artists: Wolfgang Rübsam (lute-harpsichord)

    In addition to being one of the greatest players of all time, he was one of the most important and most prolific composers of lute music in history. He wrote around 600 pieces for lute, most of them grouped into ‘sonatas’ (not to be confused with the later classical sonata, based on sonata form) or suites, consisting mostly of Baroque dance movements.
    This recital features some of Weiss’s sonatas (he called them ‘Suonate’) for solo lute. They have come down to us in a variety of tablature manuscripts, and many are missing their preludes, which were usually improvised. Weiss’s music is characterised by a unique understanding of the capabilities of his instrument, its strengths and its weaknesses. Like J.S. Bach’s, his music represents the culmination of a high Baroque style a little at odds with the more progressive aspirations of his younger contemporaries.

    I like the rounded tone of this lute harpsichord. The use of rolled chords is indicative of lute strumming technique and works well with these sonatas. As always, Brilliant Classics delivers the goods in performer, composer, composition and recording.

    This is one composer I can't get enough of! To hear these Sonatas on the Lute-Harpsichord is indeed a treat. I suppose the score was realized from tablature & transcribed to keyboard notation. Whichever instrument the music tugs at one's heart strings. Nice repertoire and exceptional playing especially realizing Weiss' use of two-string unison notes he employs in most of his Courantes & Gigues! Kudos Mr. Rübsam.

    I like lute- harpsichord or mere harpsichord music.The exceptional music of the maestro has left me in the lurch, leaving me in a melancholic mood! Any music can make anyone happy or joyful but to make someone melancholic or sad through music is very difficult and which means that the music has some substance! I realised that Weiss's music has substance. Wonderful indeed. Thanks for the upload.

    Los comienzos de Weiss son siempre muy, elegantes, Dominaba con excelencia la escenci Barroca, y este instrumento tiene un sonido peculiar muy sutil y suave.. con la potencia justa, junto al Laúd Barroco son los dos mejores instrumentos solistas.

    Reminds me of the Lute-Clavicembalo, the instrument JS Bach invented while living in Kothen to replicate the sound of the baroque lute in keyboard format

    • @Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo
      @Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      J.S Bach didnt invent any instrument. It was his cousin Johann Nicolaus Bach who build several lute harpsichords. However he also didnt invented it. Lute harpsichords existed before they were even born.

    • @Jalapablo
      @Jalapablo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo He did in a way. JS Bach designed a custom Lautenclavicymbel and sent his specifications to Zacharias Hildebrand to build. This keyboard was unique in that it was smaller in size and had two choirs of gut strings, and a little octave of brass strings. When only one stop was drawn it sounded more like a theorbo than a lute. But if one drew the lute-stop together with the cornet stop (i.e. the 4' brass stop undamped) it was said to imitate the lute perfectly as reported by Johann Friedrich Agricola. JS Bach is credited as the designer of this instrument.
