He went to oxford university and studied history. The pub landlord is a character that he has played since the nineties. I enjoy your videos, thank you. Danny from Brighton, uk
Paddington ate Marmalade sandwiches with Queen Liz2 for the London Olympics. It is a bit specific but he learnt all that stuff he knows about other countries before the Internet existed. Top bloke funny as f#*k
If you watch a full show, you'll really appreciate how he interacts with the audience, a few years ago many companies transferred their call centres to India because of the cheaper labour costs, the phone prefix was 118, hence, 118,dia! I enjoy your reactions, you seem both genuine and nice.
A very British reference was about the bear from Peru, given his documents; a shabby old suitcase; a shabby old coat; and a sign saying "please look after this bear". He is Paddington Bear, a very famous British story (a book) about a bear who arrives in London; and his adventures. They recently made two movies called "Paddington". Great fun. And his favourite food is marmalade sandwiches. 😊
The Bear from Peru joke is a reference to "paddington Bear" which is a children's story about an orphaned bear from Peru who is left at paddington station in London, hence the name. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Well done You are two lovely people Al Murray is worth watching, his act is hilarious. If you watch it again there will be parts that you did not follow first time.
Namaste. Just sayin', I'm an Australian and today is Australia Day, Amar Singh was named Australia's local hero of the year for his charity work in setting up the 'Turbans 4 Australia" organisation to help people from all walks of life to eat in time's of emergency. Feel Proud.
Well done 👍, for a couple who are not British it must have been quite confusing to get some of those references but I'm genuinely impressed with your British and global knowledge.
Love the fact you two give it a go to try understand Al's humour, all the different countries in the world understand their own culture, it's so alien to try understand English humour. This woman has a very mesmerising smile and she's extremely beautiful. I adore your accent also. all the best to you two.
Good morning Indie Jam. Once again, I am impressed at how clever you both must be to understand this humour in a language that is not your first language. I do love the character Al Murray plays as I have met real pub landlords just like him. Although many people in the UK and its territories are proud to be British, having Al make fun of our country will always make me laugh.
Hi guys, cool channel. The joke he made about India calling it 118dia is because the UK outsourced its telephone support/helplines to India. Whenever you get in touch with a company's help and support line you were always put through to a call center in India. Not so much these days, but it was that way for a while. You would call 118, hence 118dia. And the joke about the bear was Paddington Bear. 🐻 You have a new subscriber. 👍🍻
Hey , 'James Acaster On The Absurdity Of The British Empire' would be a good recommendation, it is quite relevant I suppose to India and is quite a funny watch.
I'm from Australia, but I know that the first joke about India was referring to the fact that so many call centres are based there. In England, I think a lot of the call centres are based around Newcastle where the Geordies live. He was saying that they're asking for too much money, so they're losing out on the work to India.
I loved your reactions to this. What about watching the first episode of “The Jewel in the crown “. It’s a British TV series about the end of the Raj and is fairly self critical. You might find it amusing,it was largely filmed in India and featured many great Indian actors.
im new sub and very much enjoyed your video and if you dont mind me suggesting to slow down your speaking just a little bit i think that will help you. i grew up in Malaysia and am very use to fast speaking and ascents but just for the newer viewer i thought you where a little fast for them to keep up haha great video guys :)
118-ia = India because of all the call centres. 118 118 used to be a big call centre you would ring to get someone’s telephone number (back before modern tech) and has become a joke synonym for call centres in general. He says “the Geordies asked for too much money”. So Geordies are people in Newcastle. If a call centre is based in UK, it’s normally in Newcastle (because the accent is seen as friendly). However, most call centres that serve the UK moved over to India because it was cheaper. These days, however, many have moved back to the UK for a bunch of reasons.
One of the funniest things watching The Pub Landlord do these live bits is, as he's doing a character who is a nationalistic, misogynistic little Englander is that there are certain people in the audience who don't realise what the joke is and will clap at some of the racist bits (esp. about Ireland, France, Germany) without realising the joke is about them, the type of people they are... India/118dia is a joke about how a lot of call centres for multinationals are based in the sub continent (when the phone lines first opened in the UK a lot of them started with 118) . The Geordies asking for too much money is that in the UK this work used to be done by working class people from Newcastle (geordies) and graduates in Scotland (where they could be paid less than in the South of England) whereas now a lot of it is done by people with multiple degress in India. The Peru bear bit is about Paddington Bear who is supposed to be from deepest darkest Peru.
You should try "Brasseye" & "The Day Today". Very funny satire. Also "Yes Minister" & "Yes Prime Minister", very well written intelligent satire on the nature of government. Not left or right just hilarious. Very best wishes.
You think he is this proud Englishman, maybe, but what you are seeing is a character, in a way he is mocking everyone. He is very clever. So it is an act to make people laugh. Love your show by the way.
Hi , the Bear from Peru is Paddington Bear a book and a film . Yugoslavia do not get on as different Religions . 🤔 Other than that I think you understood most of his act . Your both great fun to watch .😉👍👍
Please people remember this is COMEDY, NOT A POLITICS OR HISTORY LESSON, PEOPLE!! TRY TO LAUGH AND AVOID ANGRILY FOAMING AT THE MOUTH, SHOUTING OUT YOUR 'CORRECTIONS'😂😂😂
Being Indian, I thought you might actually be the very first reactors to understand the 118 dia joke, but nope. Anyway its about Indian call centres being cheaper to run than the geordies who wanted more money.
Why would you think they've ever heard of 118 call centres just because some Indians work on the end of the phone when we call 118? Come on. I'm sure they're aware some Indian people work in call centres but there's no reason to assume they'd put that together on hearing that joke.
Al Murray is a history buff it helps with his material with the use of Stereotypes which helps with his Pub Landlord gimmick It take a lot of Intelligence to look this Stupid.
So? He is speaking English, with a London accent. If you can’t understand someone speaking English with the accent from the capital of England, that’s on you, not him.

I'm curious how many jokes you missed as somebody from India. Obviously depending on country one's "normal knowledge", knowledge you expect most people to have, differs. Like we know the next planet away from the sun is called Mars but we don't both know for example details on the history of the relationship between the UK and Ireland. Less talking specific people and more "average people in different countries" here.
He play a character - a person who is overly patriotic and opinionated. He's not like that in real life. The Peru bear thing is about a famous child's book called Paddington Bear.

Most of all, Al Murray is poking fun at we British. He is playing a character, the Pub Landlord, who is a boorish, patriotic Little Englander.
