  • We discuss climate solutions and the need for broad involvement in the fight to avert climate catastrophe with writer and activist Rebecca Solnit and longtime Filipino climate activist Renato "Red" Constantino. Solnit is the co-editor of Not Too Late: Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility, which features an essay by Constantino about his role in the Paris Climate Agreement titled "How the Ants Moved the Elephants in Paris." "This is the decade of decision, and we need as many people as possible engaged as fully as possible," says Solnit.

    The US and western Europe could reach zero net emissions and it still wouldn't do a thing to solve the overall problem. The fate of the climate is going to be decided by poor people in Asia and South America who couldn't care less about the climate.

      Yes Republicans in US argue any policy addressing climate crisis will raise gas prices, the republicans in Congress let alone Sinema and Mansion will never support any subsidies to offset the cost of gas prices temporarily and the majority of American people will vote based on gas prices at the pump because they have to look after their ability to afford life. Government bought by fossil fuel knows as long as they don't subsidize the public will never be on board with making the changes we need so what do we do? This is where I do get hopeless

    • @lindawolfe2885

      @Jeff Johnson Um, nope. The poor are being hit the worst by the effects of climate change. If we do nothing, that’ll only escalate.
      Look up what Robert Reich has to say about the solution to both destructive climate change and poverty.
      In summary:
      First, create green jobs.
      Second, stop dirty energy.
      Third, kick fossil fuel companies out of our politics.
      Fourth, require the fossil fuel companies that have profited from environmental injustice compensate the communities they’ve harmed.
      And yes, he explains how to do that as well.

    • @jffryh
      @jffryh ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jeff Johnson what will really hurt the poor is when we have massive global drought and famine, when there is no food to eat and no water to drink, when coastal areas are permanently overtaken by the oceans, when it's too hot to be able to go outside and survive, and you can't even power your home air conditioning because all the fossil coal and oil and natural gas had all been depleted

    Yeah, sorry, but I'm a doomster. Rebecca Solnit's premise is incorrect. It isn't "we can't do anything" it is "we aren't doing anything substantive, and we aren't going to". Big difference. Even she has to acknowledge we are talking about "radical transformation" like, yesterday. My understanding is that even if we stopped all carbon emissions today and endured the instant collapse, chaos and death that would result from such a drastic move the planet would still continue to warm for decades, perhaps even centuries. Civilization is going to collapse because we're going to shoot right past 2C. We needed to act back in the 70s, but of course, the Republicans-- enemies of all good things-- said "NO!" Indeed, so petty were they even back then, Reagan removed the solar panels Carter had installed on the White House. And how they made fun of his sweater and thermostat set to 68F! And today? We can't even get Republicans to wear a stupid mask during a pandemic. Though... having said that... life is always filled with unimagined surprises, so someone-- perhaps AGI-- will discover a technology.

Governments are temporary employees. But I'm still not willing to give up yet either; I do everything I can to, as a citizen of a rich country, despite my personal poverty, to motivate those I know and interact with to care. But it's the vested interests that are not giving a feck, and despite voting in every Federal, Provincial and Municipal election for the party in Canada I feel has the best chance of doing something (we have a Green Party; unfortunately they have never come close to even being in a coalition let alone the official opposition so.... it's unfortunate). I'm reading so many books, including Harvest of Empire by Juan Gonzalez, right now but I'm a pessimist that knows "expecta pessima" doesn't always mean that the worst happens so I'll have to put this book in my library as soon as I can afford to buy it. You can't claim to be a climate change activist if you're not vegan. Animal agriculture accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector. That’s all cars and flights combined. In an average American diet, beef consumption creates 1,984 pounds of CO2e annually. Replacing beef with plants would reduce that figure 96 percent, bringing it down to just 73 pounds of CO2e.
    Animal agriculture uses nearly 70% of agricultural land and is one of the biggest contributors to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and water pollution.
    Animal agriculture makes up over 30% of the world's fresh water consumption. Growing crops for livestock feed requires significantly more water than growing fruits, vegetables and beans for direct human consumption. A single pound of beef takes about 1,800 gallons (8,183 litres) of water to produce while a serving of black beans requires 49 gallons. The average water footprint per calorie for beef is 20 times that of grain. As a result, a person’s diet makes up the largest part of their water footprint.
    When water is not being used for meat, dairy and egg production, it is being infected with toxins and waste from the industry. The mass number of crops to feed livestock are treated with extreme amounts of fertilizers and pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and bactericides), the excess of which runs off into surrounding waterways, poisoning rivers and streams and creating ocean dead zones.
    Being vegan is the single biggest impact an individual can make to combat climate change. Keeping animals off our plates makes a HUGE impact on helping to combat climate change.

    The summaries (generally written by politicians NOT scientists).
    All the IPCC reports explicitly state there is no consensus on what climate changes are going to happen. The physical temperature data is VASTLY different than the PROJECTED (model) data.
    Most of the "experts" don't know that CO2 is ONLY 0.04% of the atmosphere.
    The billions in reparations and "help" would be appropriate IF you could prove what damage was caused by whom. We cant even accurately predict the weather out farther than 10 to 15 days.

    How do we power industry without fossil fuels? What will we do with the loss of jobs that de-industrialization will produce? I support the need to prevent climate change, but I don't see these questions being addressed here, they're just overlooked. This is especially poignant in the context of the developing world who will increase their demand for fossil-fuels in the coming years as they increasingly industrialize, do we tell them they're not allowed to produce manufacturing jobs to autobomiblize? I guess we just tell them to stick to mining the resources the global north needs to produce batteries and the like.

      Solar and wind energy. It depends on where you live. There are options. Big Oil lines the pockets of the politicians. That's part of why We're in this mess.

    • @cleomenes01
      @cleomenes01 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beadingbusily how do you power machinery though, or fuel furnaces with solar energy? How do you create steel without burning fossil fuels? We're just not there yet where we can use electricity to produce steel without a carbon footprint at a large scale. There's a reason we're burning more coal globally today and it isn't entirely because of greed or a need for profit, but for the most part heavy industry still requires fossil fuel inputs.

    Using the Paris accord as an example does not support the idea that it’s not too late. Since the Paris Accord, GHGs have increased. The Paris Accord was not enforceable in any way. It was aspirational, and aspirations are not going to change anything. There’s no new messaging here. I don’t see us stopping this in time. We may have already passed important tipping points. Live your life to the fullest while you still can. Hug your loved ones every chance you get.

      The other key thing is that the Paris climate accords if the targets were reached they wouldn’t have any effect on the climate. That’s been shown time and time again but there’s people out there who refuse to hear this and continue as if it is not the scientists consensus opinion.

    Let's see if Wind Power and Solar Panels will save humanity from death from the soon to arrive Wet Bulb Temperatures. We ALL disapprove the use of Fossil Fuels, yet people are clueless about the effects of Wet Bulb Temperatures that shut down human and animal organs, unless body temperatures can cool off. Let's all run to the wind mills and embrace that sweet, cool air when the outside heat becomes unbearable for those working outdoor and those working and living inside. Will emergency services by lined up outside of neighborhood homes, or along commercial buildings to respond to humans that collapse from organ failure?
    This environmentalist is delusional, with good intentions; she does not speak of Wet Bulb Temperature. I suggest that in her next book, she research Wet Bulb Temperature so that she can guide her readers as to how Green Energy will keep families safe and living under one roof, if needed.

    Population control will help with lower emissions. There should only be 2 babies in a women's lifetime, so as the elderly die off, population is at least stabilized. The US Census reports that women from 3rd world countries, once immigrating to the US, have, on average, from 5-11 babies per woman. They then teach those kids to do the same, have babies very young, for our tax payer handouts. Population growth must be controlled to help the climate. Breeding too many is simply the practice of primates.

Besides if we want to preserve our ability to survive in the future, developing technologies to adapt to extreme environment is the path to go. Save the planet, there are weathers in other planets in our solar system that are extreme, we can set every nuuke and the environment in Venus hasn't destroyed Venus.
