      I got to play for Coach Brooks in 1970 at a Minnesoat hockey school. I was 11 years old. I just came off the ice from a shift. He yelled at me "You're in midseason form!" I thought at first he was mad at me!

      I watched these games -- was age 17 -- and I remember being perplexed as to why Herb Brooks left to go back to the locker room, not do the same as Craig Patrick and stay to interact with and celebrate with the players. But when I became a coach myself and coached youth athletes, then I understood why. Plus, I am convinced Herb just stayed true and consistent with his approach from the beginning, with his team -- he wasn't their friend; he didn't allow his emotions to show unless he was pissed with them. When they won, those players didn't expect him to be any different and he needed a private celebration

      Definitely, a CLASS ACT🎯
      RIP: Coach Brooks 🙏❤️
      Can't believe that 41 year's have gone by from that GREAT DAY 😢 It's the 1st time that I've rewatched this 🙏My Dad surprised me with tickets about 2 months prior. It was a lottery system and had no idea who we would be watching, that is not until the Friday victory vs. The USSR. I was 22 y.o., one of my fondest memories, especially since it was with my Dad !! Also, was able to attend the Awards Ceremony later on. Will never forget Eruzione calling the entire team up to the Gold Medal Podium.
      Then, out of nowhere, no PA Announcer or any type of band in charge... The crowd quieted down and a few, sounded like 10 or 20 people began singing "God Bless America", little by slow... before you knew it the entire place was belting it out in perfect unison !! I will Never, EVER forget that precious moment, a moment in which was my MOST grateful feeling of how PROUD I was to be an American... The hair's are standing up on my arms right now, just like that afternoon and tears are also sliding down my cheeks in the same way as they did on that PERFECT DAY 🥲👍🇺🇲🏒🎯❤️
      I think that I just might swing by my Dad's tomorrow and watch it again with HIM ‼️ Before it becomes something that "I wished that I had done again", but it was too late 🙏 I wish EVERY AMERICAN could experience that Pride I felt on that Sunday afternoon in Lake Placid in February 1980... What seemed like such a LONG ride up, from the Boston area, the ride back could have been 3 time's the ride and it still wasn't long enough !! It was like floating on the cloud's... I'm still floating..
      What happened to OUR GREAT COUNTRY... and I can't see most of the letters on this phone right now with ALL of these tears welled up in my eyes. I'd give anything to FIND that PRIDE again !!!
      God Bless 🙏 &.....
      Thanks DAD.....
      For EVERYTHING !!! 🎯🇺🇲

Watched this final for the first time and that too after 40 years and so far far away from USA . . Actually from Pakistan . . No doubts . . The greatest sports moment ever . . Second greatest sports moment goes to Maradona for his 1986 Goal of the Century, when he single handedly buried the english defences . . Third position goes to Javed Miandad for his 1986 last ball six against India at Sharjah . . Fourth place goes to Nikki Lauda with his head bleeding for his 1976 Italian Grand Prix brilliant third position just six weeks after his horrendous and almost fatal Nuremberg crash . . And you all are invited to choose the fifth top sports moment ever of yours . . . .

      Commercial greed is one thing, but Olympic coverage has always been the absolute worst, because on top of that they add all the dopey "human interest" crap to keep people who aren't really sports fans interested. There's nothing like watching a nordic ski race or something and having them cut away right in the middle to show you a human interest story about what one of the skiers does in the summertime, or Mary Carillo drinking hot chocolate. I have wanted to murder the producers of Olympics coverage ever since I can remember.

    • @joejankord1683
      @joejankord1683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, International hockey did not allow for "commercial" breaks. They just played the game. I am sure ABC would LOVED to have televised that goal live.

    • @patrickmcneil9180
      @patrickmcneil9180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's funny is we think of sports being more commercialised now than then, and they are, but in old hockey days this was more likely to happen. Before 1992-93, the NHL didn't schedule commercial breaks so I'm pretty sure networks just crammed them in when they could and would occasionally miss snippets of play.
      And I don't think the Olympics- even now- allow time for tv timeouts. I can't remember since it's been four years since Olympic hockey but I think, at least in Canada, they just don't do ads or just do brief 15 second ones.
      It's kind of funny that some people do remember that the USA/USSR "semi-final" (not really accurate term) wasn't broadcast live, but the benefit of that was at least you saw all the goals!

    For the record, this wasn't the gold medal game. The medal round consisted of the top two teams from both groups. The two teams from group A would play the two teams from group B. Also head to head in the group stage counted. Whoever got the most points (2 for win, 1 for tie) won the gold. So if the USA lost, they would've only had 3 points and likely wouldnt have medaled at all.

    Thanks for posting. This is the second time I watched this broadcast. The first was live 40 years ago. I recall the Friday night game against the Russians was not broadcast live. I was able to watch the taped version Friday night.
    I have a very vague memory of one US goal against Finland being missed because of an ad, but I didn't recall two of them. Bad job on the part of the network. I probably was still so happy about the Friday night result that I didn't mind.
    My wife and I had gone to the Saturday afternoon game against the Russians at Madison Square Garden a few days before the Olympics. They were so good pounding the American kids that I couldn't help applauding one or two of their late goals set up by great passing and skating. Just stunned that the USA won it all after that.
    I had watched 18 of the 20 Americans play college hockey at one time or another. And two of them play in high school. Mark Johnson (Madison Memorial and now the Badgers women's hockey coach and Bob Suter Madison East who unfortunately passed a few years ago.)

When I think of the way the format was back then had Canada defeated Finland then Finland would have played Czechoslovakia instead of Canada for 5th place before the United States vs Soviet Union game and the United States would have faced Canada for the Final here instead of Finland. Either way I think the United States would have still won against Canada. But it would have been interesting. When the United States last won the Gold before this in 1960 they beat Canada in that Winter Olympics.

      Sports are really strange. I remember thinking why doesn't the goalie go down on shots (butterfly) as a kid. I also remember thinking they should make bigger, but lighter pads for goalies. I also remember thinking why do NFL QBs plant their feet after throwing a ball only to get their knees snapped (Peyton Manning changed that). It's crazy how stubborn sports are and how long it takes them to change. Those players wouldn't have gotten half the goals with butterfly goalies nowadays.

      SeanP7195 funny you mention all that. I was just remembering the other day how I used to think, “Why don’t teams just get a bunch of three-point shooters and shoot threes all day?” And now that’s what you see. We were ahead of our time!

    With all due respect to modern day hockey, these times were better and hockey players then were the best there ever was, meaning all the players on all the teams, not just the winners. I was age 17 when these games were played. I was already a hockey fan but the USSR game turned me into a diehard. In winter, which is 8 months where I live, we get through these long winters watching and playing hockey. The world was much different back then -- drastically so, much simplier, and more at stake than just a hockey score and medal to be earned. A person not born prior to the end of the Cold War or the break down of the Berlin Wall, cannot comprehend the importance and extreme tension inherent in these games, which was felt just watching the games on TV. The games were not live unless you were in Canada. I watched on a delay, later the same day of the games, not knowing in advance the outcome. When the USA tied Sweden so near the end of the game -- Sweden having been expected to win -- then defeated Germany and the Czech teams, and the Czech Republic just as much an enermy of the USA as USSR, not to memtion their hockey team so favored to be the silver medalist that it was literally an expectation, and not just winning the game but our USA team had dominated and crushed the Czech team, by a score of 7 to 3. None of these preliminary "group" wins was even forecast as remotely possible. Then, they performed flawlessly with the Soviets and won! And finally this game with Finland, just as edge of the seat exciting and frankly, nail biting tense most of the game, same as with the Soviets. Many times here and there, all the time since these games and watching them all, I have found myself reliving the moments and in awe. Hard to comprehend it's been 40 years. 40 years! The footage is comical given how much television has changed! The timing and quality of the commercials; no banners from advertisers all over the boards and under the ice; no time clock or score plastered in the upper corner.

      It was a much simpler time, and all of the ad's were not needed. Now days everyone wants to know things "RIGHT THE FUCK NOW!!" hence all of the extra stuff on screen and the team owners are just greedy with the ads in the arena. I long for things to be much simpler, for kids to go outside and play and not sit in front of a game console and do really nothing.

      @@rsswolf7068 No sir I am not. My Daughter who is 31 years of age now was a child that actually went out and played. She was involved in sports as well as Ju Jitsu. So her use of social media was very limited. She was disciplined as a child as well and has a solid work ethic. So I guess my age of 58 may put me in that grouping as you say but that is not how my daughter was raised.

      What a loser you are. As are the Americans. The so-called 'Miracle on Ice' wasn't even televised live. 😅 What a joke. Why bother watching a replay of a sports game?

      @bestoutcomes,
      The Czech goalie was barely ECHL level and cost them in this game.
      McClanahan's goal was brutal.
      This US Team had several players who would have been on an Olympic Team made up of US pros.
      G - Craig
      D - Morrow - Ramsey
      C - Johnson - Pavelich
      W - Christian - Christoff
      Wonder what a 7 game series would have looked like with this team.

    Al Michaels who was a part of the broadcasting crew of the hockey games had said about this game, that the United States was talking to the USSR hockey federation about having the game on later,but 5 pm was the time the game stayed at.Reason being was that at 5 pm on the east coast,it was 2 pm in the west coast.it was looked at at that time, 2pm no one would really home at that time ,thats how the head honcho of ABC looked at it .The same guy actually did consider having the game aired live at 5pm, though.what was interesting too, about the hockey games during the 1980 winter Olympics that were aired on ABC was that 3 out of the 7 hockey games played were actually aired in its entirety ,including the ''miracle on ice'' game, .ABC, that year in 1980, aired 51 hours of Olympic coverage in those 13 days with most of the daytime coverage falling on the weekend.

    Poland performed a similar miracle 4 years earlier. It is clear that the USSR is a head stronger than the student team, which was proved at the Canada Cups, in which the Americans played in the strongest team and included the heroes of Lake Placid.

      No one cares about the world championships. They’re every year and during the nhl playoffs. The only people who care about them are tiny European nations with crappy teams. I do think hockey could benefit from one or two international breaks every nhl season where national teams get to really become teams for the Olympics and any potential world cups.

    Point of curiosity: if USA and Finland tied this game, both the US and USSR would have had 4 points in the standings. What would have been the tie-breaker? Head-to-head result or goal differential?
