This guy was light years ahead regarding the process of building winning teams. Light years ahead of what winning truly consists of at the highest levels. You either get it, or you don’t. Tremendous insight 👏
Absolutely. You heard Herb use 5 or 6 phrases that Kurt used in the movie. Maybe that was the director/writers, but with him in the room here, maybe not!
This video means a lot to me. I'm 66 years old and played a lot of pond hockey and made it up thru JV hockey while at Burnsville HS, a suburb of Minneapolis. During my college years at Augsburg in the mid-70's, the Uof M men's hockey team would practice on the Augsburg sheet because Williams Arena wasn't ready at the beginning of the season. I witnessed a couple of practices and recognized Bill Baker, Neal Broten and a few other players. Nobody skates like an Iron Ranger. Best of all I watched their drills and especially the "Herbies". Unbelieveable. These guys are my age. Of the 20 man roster for the 1980 Men's Olympic hockey team, eleven were products of Minnesota youth hockey programs and HS programs. Of course I am biased....but I believe Minnesota had a lot to do with the success of that team. Proud to say, "Minnesota...the state of hockey". TEAM
I believe it, we forget that the USA were skating against the Soviets, the best conditioned athletes in the world, and were outplaying them. No one skates like an Iron Ranger must be a sight to behold. Some of the moves Mark Pavelich did, I don't think anyone else was capable of skating like that. A few interesting observations - all the centremen were named Mark (Wells, Johnson, Pavelich). The Iron Ranger line absolutely rolled over the Czechs, almost like they weren't there, just stream rolled them in the 1st period.
And for those who wonder the whole facility was called Williams Arena at one time before the hockey part was renamed. Today the hockey part is the Sports Pavilion and there is a separate hockey arena
Wonderful. Wish you'd post the entire uncut conversation but grateful for what you have posted. The movie is extraordinary...yet the real story is even better.
I was 18 years old when USA won against the Soviets and still watch the original footage and the movie and can’t help but to not tear up! It was an uncertain time to be a young man starting out in life but that moment at Lake Placid was incredible!
I remember I wrote a couple of Letters to Herb Brooks in 2001 before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and He was kind enough to actually write back to me on Both occasions. He told me that He agreed with me on my Scouting Reports I wrote to Him but He did not have enough time to implement these things with the 2002 USA Olympic Team like He did with the 1979 - 80 USA Olympic Team with PHYSICAL CONDITIONING and TACTICS. USA Hockey needs to spend More Time PREPARING its Men's Teams for the World Championships and Winter Olympics the way Herb Brooks did in 1979 - 80!
"The synergy transformed into the entire team.. that's what made them great. " Herb brooks. I was in 6th grade at St Mary's in Gloucester nj when they won. We had just won the 6th grade championship and all of us were beeping the horns driving home from St. Lawrence Catholic school. We beat Mt Carmel. What a great day.
Coaches are a rare breed, same with natural leaders. Ret. Military, and we all have those people in our lives that were just natural, good and effective leaders that you could truly rely on, respect and follow anywhere.
Every team needs the role players this team had a good coach has a plan a great coach adapts the plan with his players and when it all comes together the system works. Athletes need a foundation but also need to be coached differently at times.
The only thing i see Kurt Russell got wrong about Herb was his accent. Herb doesn't have much any northern accent but Kurt pushed one. Maybe a minor thing but...
I have to believe HERB did not take his father's arrogance, ill will, hurtful as hell commentary with spite and painful disregard for HIS SON'S FEELINGS AND ANY LOVE there could have been, would have been .... likely not afterward .... in that relationship. MY FATHER WAS A HARD HEADED GERMAN HAVING NO LOVE FROM HIS FATHER, HAD TO GO WITH HIM WHEN PARENTS SPLIT .... Sister and brother stayed with his mother .... My father had a wonderful wife, four children - me the last born .... did not know how to relate to his sons - just his daughters .... first told me "I LOVE YOU" ............ *AT *MY *WEDDING ! .... having said that .... if he had ever cut me like this story with Herb Brooks ..... I WOULD HAVE CALLED HIM A SON OF A BITCH ..... and took the whooping ! But - He - despite lacking Love ..... had empathy, loyalty and never say quit .... & He would never have said that to me ...... Herb is a great Coach .... his allowing the team to be adversarial TO HIM .... to bring them closer .... was key in their desire and development causing the biggest upset in Hockey ..... a tribute to all coaches and players .... BUT THE RUSSIANS WERE CHEATS back then ... "army" status was a lie, never doing anything in the actual Military .... just worked like a PRO Team all the twenty years from 1969 - 1980 and beyond ..... That's why they were disgraced ..... I remember it all. GBjj

I could watch ten hours of this, and never get bored.
5:32 "I wasn't trying to put greatness into anybody. I was trying to pull it out." -Herb Brooks That's amazing!
I also found that to be very profound.
I also like how Kurt Russel is taking everything in. Not only was Herbie a great coach but also Russel is a great actor.

Raw.Amazing.Pinnacle. A true lesson in life. God Bless You Coach Brooks!
I'm so glad I found this interview. One of my favorite coaches of all time, even above Scottie Bowman.
Wonderful. Wish you'd post the entire uncut conversation but grateful for what you have posted. The movie is extraordinary...yet the real story is even better.
Absolutely outstanding!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!

I love this clip. Watching him think on it in post-celebration, his process, his relentlessness to get the most of the boys, great watch.
Thank you for this.
One of the greatest coaches of all time..Great coaches know how to get the absolute Best out of their players.. Herb Brooks is the definition of that
The greatest sports upset and achievement of all time …whether you follow hockey or not

You can see Brooks using the same pen that Russell carries throughout the movie. Little nuances like that are really cool to see.
This is Golden
That was great !!! And one of my favorite spots movies ever.
strange thing. i already love movie miracle. but all those backstories make me love it even more ....
I could have watched 2 hours of this conversation.
The last segment is the best, just sums it up so well.
Thank you for posting, RIP Coach

Greatest Coaching videos is not sport specific. This is one of them.
I worked on this film in Vancouver bc the whole cast was great
I was living in Victoria BC at the time, remember hearing about the casting calls, some were posted in Victoria.
What a beautiful time .GOD Bless America.
Wonderful interview. Thanks for posting.
I would love to see the full unedited videos of these sessions.
Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Love the McClanahan story. I see the movie bit in my mind and I suspect real life looked very much like it...
This is fantastic…
Gold
This is incredible
Love it 👌🏼🌟💯

"I never had curfews , 'cause the best player always gets caught in the curfew." lol
Kurt was excellent, but I wonder how Herb would have been as himself in the movie
The only thing i see Kurt Russell got wrong about Herb was his accent. Herb doesn't have much any northern accent but Kurt pushed one. Maybe a minor thing but...
When American Men were American men.
Never Before Seen?
I saw it after watching Miracle on DVD when I got it in 2004.
The audio is hard to understand.
You watched this and THAT's what you got out of it?
A car crash. Goddamn car crash while he was too fatigued and driving.
He was also a screw loose going after John Kelly

Who was the best player on the team? I think Neal Broten and Ken Morrow
Many would say Mark Johnson....🇺🇲
Best player?? Can't choose.
@@sonnestt "Magic" Ironically Mark was the son of Herb's biggest rival... Badger Bob.
Mark was the leading goal scorer for the 1980 Olympic men's hockey team....🇺🇸
