I was at this game. Was a kid. Awesome experience. And I can tell you every American in that arena was cheering Canada on. It was right after Canadians helped rescue 6 Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis. We kept chanting, "Nyet nyet Soviet, Da da Canada.
Not that I´m a Soviet Union fan or anything but I´ve just watched a documentary about CCCP hockey on swedish TV. A russian guy involved with the national team made a comment about the miracle in ice. "If a random guy gets a kiss from Sophia Loren he will talk about it for the rest of his life, Sophia Loren probably won´t even remember". Between 1954 and 1992 the CCCP had 22 gold and 7 silver medals in the world championships (not played in an olympic year) and 7 gold and 1 silver (1980) in the olympics. It´s hard not to be impressed.
You don't have to be a fan to respect that talent, coaching, and training regiment. The WC and OG records for the soviets from their entrance into the world hockey arena in the mid 50s through the 1980s is simply amazing. The average tenure of a player on this particular squad was over nine years, with some as long as 15 years. They were, by all measures, a *machine*. The Canadians played with everything they had in this game for two periods. Their style of hockey was a much better matchup against the Soviets than anything anyone else had at the time, save for Brook's hybrid of Canadian/Soviet style, and that was *barely* good enough. Regarding the MOI, had the Soviets not been so overconfident and played with the assumption of victory, it would likely have been a different story. It's one thing to enter into a game believing you *can* win; it's quite another to go in assuming you *will* win. The latter usually lacks a true wild card in sports: **hungar**. Playing without it can have disastrous consequences.
You´re right of course. They underrated their opponent big time. I think they admitted that in the very same documentary I watched. Which is one of the reasons they sent their best team to the 1981 Canada Cup and beat Canada in the final game by 8-1.
