- In response to a request in the comments on another video, this video shows an overview of the engine bay on my 1985 Chevrolet Caprice Classic with comparisons to some of the diagrams in the shop manual.
So much help from your channel 🙏🏽Thank You 📦🌍
Thanks to your video I found about 6 problems with this cars wiring! I really appreciate it!
Which engine do you have?
@@LongologoProductions 305v8
Great stuff on an 85 Chevy
Where could I get that book
,do you think you could post the pages on the horn relay and wiring
Dude your a life saver! Thank you man!
Great video! I have an '84 Caprice with a 305. Yes, can you show a photo of the cover of your manual?
I'm getting wisps of smoke from the rear of the engine, I'm thinking it's from the bad valve cover gasket.
My thought is that there might be a wire or harness that might be causing the burning also at the rear of
the engine.
There must be an image of the manual cover in one of my caprice videos…. It’s just the 1985 Chevrolet shop manual for the Impala, caprice, Monte Carlo, and el Camino.
Great video
Hi great Video can you show me the vacuumhoses in front of the carburetor?
@@Thomas-i5m4f Thanks! Please see the following parts of the video: 2:53, 3:37, 3:57, 6:45, 8:37, 9:35. Particularly 8:37 shows the vacuum hoses connecting to the canister purge valve. Hope that helps but if not let me know.
Recently bought 1985 Chevrolet Caprice 305 8 Litre, and I love her. She really is a money hole though lol. Any idea where I can find my idle air fuel mixture screw? I’ve been struggling
Try Rockauto.com?
I have a 86 Caprice and I was trying to pinpoint all of the wiring that runs for the AC I just don't know exactly which is what if you can help me or have a video showing what's what for the AC I would really appreciate it thank you
This video is the closest I have so far, as I pan across the compressor, accumulator, etc., and you can see the wiring from that. If you have a specific question I can check wiring colors, and the shop manual and reply again. Just let me know.
@@LongologoProductions ok no problem sure I just needed to know where all the wiring is just for the AC thank you
GIANT QUESTION! At 8:15 the steering column is seen- but what is the hose to the left of it right there seen on the left lower side of the screen? I’m on a desperate hunt, it comes from the engine I think?
@@musicescape6892 is it also visible at 6:43? Is it a hose or a wiring sheath you’re asking about? I can check the car in the morning if needed.
@@LongologoProductionsat 6:37 it’s seen with the gold bolt, blackish steely tube leading down (I’m sorry I’m not a car person 😂 I’m helping a friend and I’m on a deep hunt from online. From a google lens search your video popped up, and I learned it’s the same engine!!)
To the right of it is the “oil fill” writing, and then left is that gold bolt. They have a snap right above that bolt that is becoming separated from the black wider piece it connects to above it. And the car died today so I’m wondering if this could partially be the cause? It’s a 1984 Chevy impala.
@@musicescape6892 ok I think I see now. It’s also visible at 5:05. The black thing above the gold nut is a check valve and is part of the air injection reaction (A.I.R.) system. There should be another one of those black check valves on the other side of the engine, but down lower and behind the electric divert/electric air switching valve (EDES). Follow the black hose (labeled 357034 on my car in the video) over and across the engine to where it connects to the EDES on the other side. Not far behind that you will see the other check valve. On the other side of each check valve are the metal pipes that split into four smaller pipes that connect to the exhaust manifold. The shop manual says these A.I.R. systems are used to reduce carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrous oxide, emissions, and are also used to heat up the catalytic converter quickly on engine startup, so that conversion of exhaust gases starts quickly. Hope that helps.
This was great
Mine is getting a new fuel pump and fuel filter. You'll be driving along and it will stumble and die and you'll be sitting at the side of the road. It will try to fire when you crank it but it wont start. The second time it did that a neighbor took me back to my house and I gotm gas and filled a little bottle and brought 5 gallons just in case it was out of gas and the gauge was wrong(It wasnt, the gauge on both that and the 1981 Bonneville are very accurate). So I poured a little down the carburetor and it fired right and and drove home.
Good luck and hope that takes care of it!
Quick question where does the engine bay light hook up at
@85boxLS: There is no engine bay light on my Caprice. Not sure what model years had that.
Thanks for sharing, my Chevy is cranking but no start and no clicking sound from the carburettor what could be the problem?
Perhaps you’re not getting fuel to the carb? Is the fuel filter clogged? No clicking might mean the fuel pump isn’t working.
My caprice has diesels very badly after I stop it, sometimes it even afterburns or afterfires. What would you say is the issue? There could be tons of things but what’s most likely in your opinion?
@BenjaminMilton-zj9wb: From the shop manual for dieseling, it says to first visually check your vacuum hoses for any splits, kinks, or improper connections; check carburetor choke, throttle linkage, and fast idle cam for sticking; check cruise control for proper adjustment (?); check engine idle speed; check ignition timing. From the shop manual for backfiring, do the same visual checks; make sure hot air tube is connected to air cleaner; check for proper operation of THERMAC; on cold engine only check EFE valve; check carb accelerator pump operation; check Differential Pressure (VAC) sensor hose for restriction or for fuel/water in hose; check for proper operation of EGR valve; perform compression check - look for sticking or leaking valves; check for restricted exhaust system (MY NOTE: also check for clogged catalytic converter -- this happened to my car several years ago); check for crossfire between spark plugs, distributor cap, spark plug wires, and proper routing of spark plug wires (wires for cylinders that fire in sequence should be on the same side of the engine and should not be routed next to each other, i.e., 8 and 4, and 5 and 7); check for proper valve timing.... I hope something here helps!
Where did you get your manual from? Or is it the original that came with the Caprice?
@lowroadjaydawg4110: My father bought it probably over 30 years ago and I don’t know where. Nowadays you can get reprints on Amazon or eBay on paper (more expensive) or CD (less expensive). It’s not the most well-written but it definitely is helpful.
@@LongologoProductions ok thanks…I seen your videos on the shock absorbers, what kinda of coil springs did you use or you haven’t changed them out yet?
@@lowroadjaydawg4110 : the coil springs in the front are original. The coil springs in the rear are load leveling and are probably 25 or more years old.
Hey bro what is that green plug wrap with electrical tape at 4:02? Does it connect to anything I have the same one but I can’t the other connector that connects to it .
@richardcastillo208: I’m not sure. I see it again at 9:06 and 9:35. All that wiring and hoses are so %@&$ complicated!
I have an 89 caprice. The problem I have is when I turn the switch, all the lights come on, but it will not make a sound when I turn to start it. I've replaced the switch cylinder and the computer part of the switch also. I've replaced the neutral safety switch too. I can start the car if I jump it from the starter. It has a good battery and fuses. If you have any idea what the problem is, your help would be greatly appreciated.
I researched the shop manual on this. Assuming you have one of the original engines, it sounds like you have a bad connection between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid, and/or a bad ground from the starter solenoid over to the battery. Does the battery recharge normally while the engine is running? If so that should mean that your connections from the battery light on the instrument panel through the generator and to the battery are OK. Then it would be a matter of checking/cleaning/reconnecting/tightening your connections from the battery to the starter and from the ignition switch to the starter. The fact that you can jump start it from the starter is pointing to a bad connection somewhere in these places. Chasing bad connections is a pain. I hope this helps you.
@@LongologoProductions yes its the original tbi 305. I haven't checked to see if it's charging the battery when I do crank it from the starter. I'll have to check that. But I really appreciate you responding and helping me out.
@LongologoProductions it ended up being the wire from the switch to the starter. I had to run a temporary one till I take it to the electric shop.
@@JDP15 glad you found the culprit!
Do you know where I can get a stock replacement engine harness ?
@MA27696: Try rockauto.com?
Can u tell me the names of the wires coming from the engine side wire harness coming off the firewall
Maybe it’s on one of the shop manual pages I showed?
@@LongologoProductions did u do a video on the shop manual I didn’t see it
@@jermainebowers9650 in this video there are a few parts where I show the shop manual pages and you can pause and zoom in.
How can I get the vacuum hose connections for a 1988 caprice
This can be quite difficult. I assume you no longer have the sticker under the hood showing the vacuum connections for the rudimentary emissions controls in a high level diagram. This sticker is shown on the fan shroud over the radiator in my video. I would then look to the shop manual for the 1988, as well as online for any under-the-hood images of 1988 cars with the same engine configuration as yours. Sorry I can’t be more help.
Why is it that when I go to crank up my 1982 box carpice it throw a spark from the starter
@@Felipemartinez-d2g maybe loose cable? Check connections to starter and check connections to battery.
Why if when I press gas it turns off car
@@Jeremiah-s7h when in gear or when in park/neutral or both?
@@LongologoProductions in parked
@@Jeremiah-s7h The shop manual says this could be caused by a number of things. I assume the same problem occurs whether the engine is started after being cold or hot. Check to make sure the hot air tube is connected to the air cleaner housing. Check to make sure the THERMAC (on the arm that extends from the air cleaner housing) is operating properly. Check the carburetor, choke valve, throttle, linkage, and fast idle cam for sticking. Check to make sure all vacuum lines are connected properly to the carburetor. Check EFE valve (black plastic piece in front of the carburetor with small hose connections at right angles) (I have had to replace the EFE valve before although I don’t have a video on it). Check the EGR valve (see my other video on this). I hope this helps.
