I'm a professional tile installer, and I am so pleased to see you guys put down mortar under the underlayment for the floor tile. Not a lot of tile guys even do it. But it's a must! Much respect. And I hope you are blessed with the rest of your build.
We went the 'build as you can afford it' rout when we built our homestead, and couldn't afford the bathroom my wife wanted right away, so I fashioned a black plastic stock tank into a shower. We now have a very nice bathroom with a curb-less shower wrapped completely in Schluter®-KERDI. It takes longer to build debt-free, but you wind up having a much better homestead, and you know every little thing about it! Keep up the good work -- it's coming along nicely!
Sorry I didn’t think about this sooner. When you build the back part of the house, consider using commercial style toilets where the drain goes into the wall rather than into the floor. It’s easier to keep the floor clean, and you don’t have to deal with wax seals. Spring is coming.
If you two aren’t careful, you’re gonna get good at this DIY thing! Once again, great job and great video! Really enjoyed seeing your kids in the video. Y’all are going to have a wonderful off-grid life!
Love the way you two work as a team. Josh is obviously a talented tradesman. Thanks for sharing your beautiful kids, they’re so lucky to experience all of your animals 👍👏👏❤️
Good Job won't be too much longer and you will have it completed. Lots of Work but having a feeling of accomplishment is priceless as you work you are Paying yourself.
You have so much noladge and very talented thank you so much for sharing your experience with us God bless you and your family for many more years of love happiness and healthy kids
I watch a lot of husband and wife homestead building projects and I must admit, I really enjoy this channels format. A lot of building, construction and visual DIY but most importantly a lot less talking. Great job and continued success. - A True Fan.
with winter and all be a good time to get under house insulate between all floor joist, put house wrap over it then chicken wire,i did this to my cabin and havent had any critters for 10 yrs
Thanks x your tutorials, very detailed and professional as usual. Your dream is about to come true and in the meantime, I think having almost 40k of people following you is a good push to keep going. Thanks again and a kiss to the black cat from Venezia. 😻☮😉🍀
Once again, thanks for sharing your journey:) it’s refreshing to see a couple work side by side completing your dream. Job well done. Think of all the memories that you both are creating for your children and your future.) enjoy 😉
Wow!! I am really enjoying watching since you started. You are both an amazing couple. I cant wait to see when it is finished. Looking forward to the next video. Keep it up. Looks like you and family have a great future!!
When I do a knee wall I normally put a 2x6 horizontally for a header. Allows easy nailing for the studs and gives me a nice place to nail sheet rock or backer board all the way across. Just cut a 45 degree cut on the edge. You can actually build the wall with a header and a footer and then stand it up and nail it. Otherwise great job.
Good job guys glad Josh had a jumper over the red flannel when using thinset its messy shit I use it in my mosaicing all the time and grout...cant wait to see the video of the tiling and what type of tiles yous choose...so exciting...cheers from Oz
I love watching you guys!! I am so jealous !! I am so far behind you guys... at least I have purchased my 80 acres in Northern AZ right on what they call Jurassic Park Of Elk and mule deer. "The Arizona Strip" I cant wait!
Looks good guys love y’alls videos.Just a tip be sure that toilet flange is attached to the sub floor an that the tile is installed under the flange so you want have any leaks.Just got thru ripping up subfloors in a three year old house due to the flanges being installed flush with floor tile. Wish I could send pics to show the damages.
We use 1.25 min thickness sub floor for tile. So 1/2 in hardy backer. Set with 1/4 x 1/4 trowel and screws. Then tile set with 3/8 x 1/4 or 1/2 x 1/2 trowel. Also when possible set toilet flange on cement bord for support and dont need to use an xtra wax ring.
They are very good workers... There working flow is awesome... It looks they never done mistakes... I wish all things, that I do will fit so easily... As it seems like they work... Great great job... :)
Feline video-bomb! You cat is identical to mine. Same white patch on his chest. :D My son called it hacks. LOL. You made the tile installation look easy. Looking good.
I love this house..Can't wait for more! My goal is to build my own home one day too! Probably another 5-8 years away from that but I'll bee there one day
Again, I enjoyed another video from ya'll. You do good work and have such a good time doing it that it makes all of your videos look like fun! I'll be here in my little world waiting for another update from yours. Later Kiddos 🥇🚽 🚿 🏗
Since u both r doing a lot of work on ur knees.. Some good rubberized knee pads would be ideal.. As for the video of the shower..right about where Josh is laying the wooden blocks.. Ur black kitty took all ur bling. Work looks really good. Stay safe.. God bless
OK so viewers "CAN" learn some skills, but for some of us - this is PURE FUN to share! Have a GREAT St Patty's Day folks, we're looking forward to sharing your progress and some laughs! PS ~ Wrote to "Harbor Freight" asking they put you both on the cover of their monthly - waiting for a reply! :)
Erin , less sugar in the cupcakes . See what it does to josh , the cats singin and dancing . Lmao . Good job guys .keep going . Happy st paddys day everyone .
You may want to fill under the closet flange with mortar/thinset to stabilize it, then screw to the floor with stainless screws. You are asking for leaks leaving it floating in the air like you have it. You probably should have installed it after the backerboard so it had better support under it, but it is kind of late for that now. Just really, address it before you tile around it.
Are you doing a preslope on the shower pan? I did my first mud base shower in this house. The one issue that I've had using a vinyl shower pan is all of the layers in the folds in the corner. I think if I were doing it again, I'd trim the studs and blocking back about a quarter inch to allow for that added material. It telegraphs through the backer and you end up with a bit of a tapered tile in the corners.
Hello. Have you considered a drainage hole, for those times when water from the shower, bath or vanity overflow, in the bathroom floor? Here in Australia it is part of the building code that all "wet" areas have a drain, and that the floor slopes / gradients to that drain at a ratio of 1:60
I think the idea is to prevent water from these overflows getting into other rooms and/or, if the residence is a multi story building, leaking into the floor below. I have seen baths and vanity basins with built-in drains to prevent overflow but I think the reg also want to cover accidents with toilets.
Did I hear right and you're gonna tile in the bathroom? I'd hold off on tiling til the drywall is up in the house. At least the close by rooms, but really better if all of it. You're risking popping those tiles right off otherwise. In all the construction I have done I have never once seen any tile work done pre drywall finishing. Get those walls up, get em mudded and sanded, then worry about finish tile work.
Do you have a video of how you saved and budgeted for this? That would be something I would love to see since my husband and I have started to think about building our own house eventually as well but I'm not sure where to start with the money
A little off topic, but with spring coming in fast and your kids running around, don’t you have a lot of rattlers in your area? Are the guinneas your mitigation strategy for the snakes?
I am learning so much watching this. Question: I thought the whole point of thinset was not needing to screw it down. Why did you then screw holes through what's supposed to be a smooth bathroom floor? Or am I wrong? I looks this channel. Thank you for sharing!
Make more wet thinset under backboard and before installing using wet sponge to clean plywood from dust and the plywood will not suck water so fast from thinset.

True, but if the flange ends up too low, they have extensions for that. But I hear what you're saying.
I was thinking the same the flange is in the "air" now - not good. It must be secured to the subfloor.
Looking great love your videos

Gunna say the same about the flange. Never set the flange at the sub floor height unless you are doing lament.
You guys are amazing!! Love the videos!!

awesome yall
Great video thanks
Nice work
Thank you for motarring down the backer board. I have yelled at too many youtube videos where someone screwed it down dry.
tim garcia: hi, why is mortar required?
You should make up a 1/2" ply jig to make the angle cuts easier. Just run your saw guided by the jig.
Riskantní. Děti rychle rostou! Pár roků a vana bude malá.

Use Schluter-Ditra under the tile floor. It works great and is much easier to cut and install.
multi talented with the hammer, I'll have to send him a pair of nunchucks n see if he beats himself up or not. lol Love the videos.

Yes we are doing a preslope on shower pan. We are interested to see how it turns out!
@@WildWonderfulOffGrid Good thing you are doing a preslope. There is a preslope war going on on all the top tile channels.

Guineas are helpful but the kids need to rely on their awareness and smarts. Rattlers give you a heads up- it's the copperheads that are sneaky.
@@WildWonderfulOffGrid I can't stand Copperheads or Cottonmouth.
