      Math. Math. Math.
This is where all that pythagorean therom stuff comes to be useful.
The carpenters square ('walking it down a board length) and calculator are your best friends. Odd shapes are even more fun. Like 8 or ten sided buildings. :-)

And I wish I had a fancy miter saw like that. Sometimes you need to think angles, and sometimes in pitch. IE 4/12, 6/12, 12/12 pitch. Not baseball either.
      Y'all gots the kewl stuff.

Well done , as any (old school) apprentice carpenter will tell you , trying to set out and cut your first
Compound angle on a jack rafter is a nightmare, you did it without help, as a retired carpenter
I salute you sir, word of advice, take care when forming the valley gutter . If not done right it can cause trouble
    In years to come.
Very best of luck to you both.

Hey guys, I have been watching for some time now. Your building looks great and changes are just part of the process. I don't call it a mistake, I just call it making it better. Take your time, be safe. It took us two years to build the cabin, the shop is in process. I have changed my building process several times, that is also part of the process. This is our third and last time. But each time it gets better. You guys are great. Thanks for the info.

Great job guys!! Josh, any time you run into a head scratcher draw it out full size on the floor, like a full size blueprint end view. Chalk out your plate line to length, find your center and your preferred height, take a scrap piece of framing lumber and trace around them for your ridge end view and rafter face view and get your cuts lines. All this can be done off ladders on the floor and you can check your cuts to the floor print. Wish I was closer to give you a hand or could have talked you thru.

Im a retired framer, many roofs of all kinds mostly custom homes with cut and stacked roofs, I used the Blue old framers' roof guide, it on the 20th reprint, very old! has every cut for any pitch of roof, gable, hip, etc.! saved a lot of time, without that you can layout any rafter with a framing square. all the combos of any roof or stairs can be figured with it! You guys did good with a steep heavy roof! The only thing I saw was were the California rafters hit the valley, the heal needs another 2x to support the heal of the rafter! If that makes any sense?

Custom work like that is time-consuming and can be tedious, but is worth it in the end. Get a angle finder and large Contour Gauge if you've going to do more, and consider using a jig saw w/a fine tooth blade for the cuts. and do try and extend a overhang far out from that door opening end , if not you'll want to later, as being able to stand outside the door w/out getting wet is priceless..much like the kids playing with the wood and branches ;)
