@@randalthor6872 I carry AIWB, my gun isn't "pointed at my balls", the barrel points just outside the balls, when I sit, the end of the barrel points between the scrotum and inner thigh. I've got some pretty serious low back issues and appendix carry is the most comfortable method I've found. I carry an IWI Masada Tactical (4.6" barrel, 17+1 capacity) and I find AIWB to be very comfortable. Just use a quality holster and never get in a hurry to holster the weapon, always check to make sure the holster is clear, watch the gun go in and make sure no loose straps or clothing went in with it. Once properly holstered, the gun is as safe as it can be, if it's pointed at your balls it makes no difference, it won't go off on its own out of the blue. The 'accidents' (negligent discharges) occur during holstering or drawing. Do those two things properly and AIWB is just as safe as any other carry method. Of course, no matter which way you decide to carry, you should still strive to always do those two things properly and safely. Try several carry methods, see which you find best for concealment, comfort and access. AIWB is my preferred method and most people I know who tried it stuck with it.

One thing he didn't mention is that with AIWB you always have a visual on the status of the gun. When I carry 4 o'clock I have to physically check with my hand to make sure its still concealed correctly or is printing. If my shirt is riding up or whatever. When in appendix, I always know what's going on, and I am the only one who can get to it.

There's at least one secondary advantage to AIWB, in my opinion. Because it's intrinsically uncomfortable to wear AIWB while sitting, I've found that my seated posture is best when carrying appendix. I don't slouch forward; I keep my lower back and lower abs slightly engaged; I sit further forward in my seat and have better foot placement on the ground.. It makes a small but noticeable difference over the course of a day.

That's exactly why I appendix carry a da/sa. I have a few options, all sigs for carry. My p224 is more of a summer gun because I can wear just a tshirt, and then in months I can wear a jacket, thicker long sleeve shirts, hoodies, etc I choose between a p239 and a p229 depending on where I'm going. I don't think I would ever carry a p365 or other striker fired guns in that location.

If it helps anyone hesitant to carry- When I started carrying appendix, I carried it empty (completely unloaded) but racked for about a month or so. If there were any kinks in my protocol, wardrobe, sitting posture, seat belt interference, restroom situation , etc. I'd find out w no consequence & gain some confidence & peace of mind. After a while of everyday scenarios & finding that the trigger had not dropped, I started carrying loaded but "dry racked". A month or so of that I had sufficient confidence to go ahead & carry Condition 1 with no real increase in anxiety or concern, though I still use the same care, attention, & strict diligence that I did on Day 1. Excellent topic! For myself; however, and because of surgeries, it is highly uncomfortable to have anything pressing against my lower abdomen. In some cases, it is even uncomfortable to have anything on my belt that would drag it down. I started wearing Perry suspenders to prevent that from happening. My normal carry these days is either in a shoulder rig or offside cross-draw carry, which while not ideal, is better than not carrying at all. Aside from that, the cant of the cross-draw holster is very comfortable when sitting and positions the muzzle of my firearm on the hipbone and not at my femoral artery. I suffer from poor blood circulation, and restricting a major right to left femoral bypass does not appeal to me, which appendix carry could do.

After over a year of this experiment, I went back to the 2:30 position in an outside the pants holster I had carried for most of my life. For me, just speaking for only myself, that has always felt right. Also, going back to an external holster allowed me to carry a larger gun. In training, practicing draws and my friend timing me, I got the best times. I am short and stocky, barrel chested. Maybe if I were thin and tall that might be a good way to carry. I do not know.

I agree with many of the potential issues with the AIWB, but I would say that there are some training techniques to overcome the issues of single handed draw. I prefer to keep my dominant hand wide open an sliding it under my cover garment, as this allows me to use the back of my hand to lift the garment. I have trained this way for some time, and don't have the garment snag on anything. I also don't mind AIWB without an under garment, but this was just a matter of getting used to the feeling.

There are quite a few resources out there with various methods for one-handed appendix draw. I’ve found (giving all a fair and lengthy trial) that fir me personally, I do much better with a circular or elliptical type thumb motion to clear my cover garment. Gotta put in the practice though, but it can be done pretty effectively, though obviously not as quick as two handed. And there are also various two handed methods as well that are worth the practice to get proficient at. Last, I absolutely couldn’t agree more with your hips forward, firearm grip against the belly, muzzle angled outward, reholstering technique! In some situations, I’ll even remove the holster to reholster the firearm (being careful to not muzzle my support hand either). Definitely the scariest part of appendix carry! 😳

And if you're putting it back in the holster that means you've determined the threat to be over so taking that one second to look is a none issue.

I have tried it - actually bought one holster designed for AIWB and found it was not very comfortable at all when doing normal things besides carrying a pistol concealed. I found a simple JM Custom Kydex AIWB in the Nelson traditional design to work better, but still had days where it was uncomfortable. I have paid attention to Spencer Keepers’ products, but also have a small hernia right where the holster would ride and haven’t been very anxious to get surgery. Furthermore, I’ve heard post surgery problems continuing and can see a holster riding on scar tissue being just as painful. I will continue to carry strong side as I have for the past 30-some years. In the end, it’s to each his or her own, but please get good gear and proper training to use it.

Sometimes in the winter when I'm wearing heavy clothing I'll carry appendix or 4 o'clock with a compact, but not often as it is far less comfortable. I know some people wouldn't be okay with the level of stopping power but the reliability and accuracy is actually pretty astounding, and shot placement even with a 45 is the most important thing. The amount of reps I've done to be smooth out of the pocket is high and I practice with snap caps every day to keep myself in good shape. I drive for a living so I spend a lot of time in my car. I found that in order to draw from a behind the hip holster while sitting in a bucket car seat I had to lean forward to create enough space to get a grip on the pistol. If an assailant is at your driver's side car window when you draw, by leaning forward you're exposing the back of the head and neck to them. You also can't effectively use your weak hand to fend off an attacker while drawing. An appendix holster offers a far easier draw while seated and doesn't compromise your ability to defend with the weak hand while drawing.

It's reassuring to hear someone like Mr. Ayoob both talk about the mental aspect of AIWB and that my holstering technique is just as he requires (in his classes). I guess I'm at least doing something right!

I appendix carry snubbies everyday. Comfortable and forget I have it sometimes. I do carry some semiautomatic pistols AIWB but don’t care for it too much. Thanks for the great video.

Great job on giving the pro's and con's. I never thought about the muzzle blast issues.

Agree with the pros and cons of both. I carry both ways but carry different guns in each position. My edc is a P365XL and I carry that at the 4 o clock position. I will also carry a S&W 642 J frame when I am in gym shorts or something light and I will carry that appendix. I don't feel comfortable with a striker fired pistol carried appendix. I would need a revolver or a DA/SA pistol for me to feel comfortable with carrying appendix with the heavier trigger and or hammer to press my thumb against to insure I didn't miss something in the holster or anything else to avoid a ND. Just makes me most comfortable.

I started out at 4:30 iwb and switched to appendix 10yrs ago... once I found
a holster that's so comfortable that
sitting is never a issue, as a matter
of fact I've fallen asleep with it on.

Thanks for this even-handed breakdown of pris and cons
