How to Knit an Easy Celtic Braid Cable

- OK, maybe this isn't the easiest, but it's certainly not the hardest! Four cables weave in and out of one another and as long as you've got that, you're good to go. Basically. If you get discouraged, just think "Well, at least I'm not doing this with six cables."

Hi Alex, the only way I ever got this was to print out the pattern for the Audrey headband, then used a piece of white paper to cover up the rows I wasn’t working, and check off rows as I did them. Then slide the blank page down to the next row. It takes a bit of time, but so worth it. Looking forward to doing another one. Google “Audrey Headband”, or “Audrey Ear Warmers” to find the pattern. After watching this I said tears of joy and frustration because I have been following a pattern that got me nowhere absolutely nowhere and he cleared it all up for me thank you so much.
Great tutorial explaining where the cables are going and how to get the desired cross!! Just a little tip: if you didn’t pull your needles so far apart, you wouldn’t be pulling all the needed slack out of your stitches, and hence leaving such tight, uneven stitches with a big loop at the end (all the slack from across the row). It would make your knitting soooooo much easier for you and give you much more uniform, pretty looking knits! Thanks for the tutorial!! Haven’t watched for awhile, so was just checking in✌🏻💛

This video really helped me to understand knitting cables, how the cables weave over and under each other and how to cable over the "background" purl stitches.

I started one of these a couple of years ago and worked it out by myself. Put it down for quite a while and have unpicked it four times as I have forgotten what I was doing. This was great - now I can pick it up and go with it again. It may finally be finished. :)

I've been trying to knit this Celtic Cable for a few years, on and off. Simply by chance, I stumbled upon your video. RJ, you explained this Celtic Cable Pattern superbly! However, this written pattern by Millie Finn, facilitated my success of this cable.
I listened to your video several times, while confirming Millie Finn's written directions. Once I confirmed an accurate working pattern, I proceeded with the pattern.

I've added 4 rows of plain knit stitches just to get it started
Row 1-4: knit whole row(24 stitches)
Row 5-6: k2, p2, k2, p4, k4, p4, k2, p2, k2
Row 7: k2, p2, k2, p4, CF4(k4), p4, k2, p2, k2
Row 8: k2, p2, CF4(p2, k2), CB4(k2, p2), CF4(p2, k2), CB4(k2, p2)
Row 9: repeat row 8 without using cable
Row 10: k2, p4, CB4(k4), p4, CB4(k4), p4, k2
Row 11: repeat row 10 without using cable
Row 12: k2, p2, CB4(k2, p2), C4(p2, k2), CB4(k2, p2), CF4(p2, k2), p2, k2
Repeat row 5-12 to desired length

Hey, I love your work, you've made sense of knitted cables for me at last. It would help to have a pattern that is written, so we could follow along. Also, when you say knit the knits and purl the purls, do you mean knit the purls (of the previous row) and purl the knits? Because otherwise my piece of work looks nothing like yours :) Your straight forward style of presentation makes me feel confident that I'll master cables and knitting in general. Thanks :D

Do you know that knitting used to be solely a man's domain? The royal knitter was the man who knit for the king back in the day. I have no idea when women decided it was something they wanted to do - but really it is for everyone. Very satisfying.
Men used knit and crochet to fix fishing nets, etc.
Now that I didn't know but I figured there was something kind of reagal about men knitting, with girls it's like cooking or cleaning, you should know how to do everything even if its a little. But I like when mhen knit it shows their patience in a different light. My son knits my youngest us still messing with my wool and my daughter weaves because she finds knitting confusing.. Lol
But then men are good with knots anyway do knitting and Pearling is just another form of knotting

Your process is really clear and easy to follow. When knitting cables, is it usual for the work to be tighter than usual? I always feel that I'm doing something wrong and end up frustrated. Thanks
yep, especially with this pattern things can get pretty tight. If it's REALLY too tight, you can always add a row of plain knitting before doing a cable row which will make things look a bit looser.

So, i'm attempting to do this as a repeating round for a hat on circulars. What i think i've figured out is that if you're going to do multiples of this it's really a 22 stitch repetition (omitting the last K2) and essentially (after the initial 22) it's just a repetition of round 2 (the first cable round) to round 5 (ending back at the original round 1) correct?
Please show how to cover the whole sleeve with all the X cable.Thanks
Ohnoo after the tutorial I thought I needed to crossover the middle two cables, but they needed to be knitted to the side... After taking apart 1,5 row and trying again I succeeded. Apparently the pattern starts again at 12:19.

wait... so Row 1 (the right side??) is knit the cable and purl the background, and Row 2 (the wrong side???) is PURL the cable and KNIT the background??? did I get that right??

I’m knitting a pair of socks with cables, and the second sock has been frogged & reknit so many times in one spot that there’s an obvious color-change in several rows 😞.
