    This is the equivalent of moss (or rice) stitch in the UK and it's actually really simple: If you use an even number of stitches, simply repeat K1, P1 on each row. As a general rule for this particular stitch, when you turn your work to do the next row, you knit into the purl stitches of the previous row, and purl into the knit stitches (whether you are using even or odd number of stitches). I think this may be why some people in the comments below have wound up doing "rib" stitch by mistake.

    I love this stitch! I saw you use it as a border on a knit 4 below video. By far my favorite for borders. Currently working on smooth edges . . . found a crochet hook cast on that is absolutely beautiful, especially with the seed stitch. Thank you sooo much. 😊

    Hi Kristen, I sent a comment some time ago about how I love this book, no longer being a beginner I still return to this book for inspiration when I don’t want to find / buy a pattern. I have just started a child’s throw using the Diamond Brocade pattern. Aran yarn 5.5m circular needles with seed stitch borders edging… it is absolutely beautiful and looks all snow and wintry so I think I shall put it away for a Christmas gift. Thank you so much for all your help and tips 🎉🎉🎉

    This was my most recent type of knitting to accomplish. Casting on with odd number of stitches definitely makes it easier. I used a pattern that had even number of stitches and row 1 was k1, p1 all the was through and row 2 was p1, k1. I messed up so many times as I forgot to purl the first stitch. I love your videos Kristen. Whenever I'm ready to try my next new style I come here to see you do it first. Thank you!!!

    I once made this with I taught myself to knit then I did a shawl with the seed stitch. I was no longer doing needle crafts I guess I lost my CROJO and love for knitting for a while when I didn't have time for it. I'm back into it now and even looking forward to get into the swing of things again . Thanks for the video, I now know how to do this again and once I do that I am going to learn things with increase and decrease stitches to make things lacy thanks for the new found inspiration.

    I have been trying for an hour to make a seed stitch washcloth by following a written pattern and I turned my work into a jumbled mess. So I took it all out, took to youtube and tried again. everyone kept saying, "When u purl, make sure your yarn is at the front." but they never showed what that meant so i just kept turning my needles. Again, jumbled mess. then i find this video, you say the same thing, "make sure your yarn is at the front" BUT YOU SHOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!! I actually made a loud noise in exclamation i was so relieved. makes perfect sense now, thank you for saving my project!!

      LOL! I also made a seed stitch when I was trying to do ribbing. Tip: if you want to do ribbing (whether single or double) you want to start your next row opposite of how you started the first (i.e. if row 1 started on a knit, start row 2 with a purl, and vice versa). But if you want a fabulous seed stitch, just keep repeating row 1.

    Hullooo! Fellow beginner here! I found this tutorial very comprehensive and I was off and away on the seed stitch -from not knowing how to purl- pretty much right away.
    My only complaint is that I am working on a project with squares of an EVEN number of stitches. I learned pretty quickly on my own that if you're working with an even number, all you have to do to maintain the seed stitch, is to alternate your starting stitch; if the first stitch of a new row is a knit stitch, purl first. If the first stitch of a new row is a purl, then knit first. Easy peasy :)

    • @barbarahvilivitzky1092
      @barbarahvilivitzky1092 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your idea. I know that the odd-stitch method works, but I do find it easier to recognize the first stitch for a knit or a purl, and do the opposite. Thanks.

I've been doing stockinette stitch (knitting one row, purling one row) and I keep getting the curl of both edges into each other for my scarf and I've been trying to fix it. I even added a border of 3 knit stitches and it didn't fix it. So I'm looking forward to trying out this pattern on a new scarf that hopefully won't have a curl! Thanks again!

    Hi Kristen! I just wanted to thank you so much for the Studio Knit channel! For my birthday in September, my beloved sister-cousin knitted me a beautiful purple scarf; I'm not only warmed by it, but by the sisterly bond we both share. So touched by it, I talked to my granny (a needlework nut)about it, so she pitched the idea that I learn to knit so I can make her a pretty scarf too. Looking at all the different types I can make with 2 needles and yarn, I got super pumped, so, instead of putting up her Christmas tree, granny took me to Joann's and bought me some pretty Lion Brand yarn to use for my sister's scarf ^^ she also lent me tons of supplies, a guidebook, needles, a carrying case, and a less fancy skein to practice with. The book was written in the 70's, so it was pretty confusing on lots of the stitch descriptions, despite all the pictures; the variants of cast-on stitches confused me so so bad, so I went to TH-cam and found your cast on video. I'm telling you, that video did more than just help me. Not only has my casting on been wonderful, it's been about a week since I started knitting and I'm already practicing different types of stitches! I've learned how to k stitch, purl, bind off, all the basic basics one must know, and it's been loads easier on me since I started following up with Studio Knit videos to see how you do your stitches or your projects :) I didn't even tell my sissy that I took up needlework, so she'll be absolutely surprised when I hand her my hand-knitted scarf :D I've not seen her in about 8 years either, so yay surprises!Thank you again for making the world of needlework easier to understand for a young mind Kristen~! Merry Christmas and may God send you a happy New Year!~Kat

    Hello, I did see a way to email you, so here I am. I bought a copy of your pattern book. I would like to use it for a teen summer camp. I was wondering if I would need to buy a copy for each student or am I able to print of the copy I bought? Thanks in advance, Michelle!

    I love this technique and stitch. I am relatively new to knitting. As this pattern starts with a knit stitch and ends with a knit stitch, does this deter the working piece from rolling at the edges. Or for a scarf, would 2 knit stitches at the beginning and 2 at the end make a better edge. I love that this design is the same on both sides and will make beautiful infinity scarves.

      Emily whiting whenever I have done seed stitch my knitting has not rolled with or without the knit stitches at the ends

  • @adreanwilliams3789

    Let me start by saying that I am a novice, I have done only two scarves (they both look like purl stitch even though I used the knit stitch). I noticed that you don't drop your first stitch. Would it mess up the pattern if I dropped my first stitch?
