I’ve spent months trying to get my tank open... looked at several videos & nothing worked! I was about to take the tank off like you said in this video but glad I came across your video! You’ve saved me sooo much money! Thank you for posting this
Follow up. I had a serious seized gas cap. I used a high quality lubricant specialize in unseizing. A cloth then ribber hammer to shock lose. Triee the key many times. Buster lub worked well. Wd specialized worked well. A 3/8 3 inch flat head scre deiver. Make sure its skinny and put head angled to the inner top of lock..try to turn to the right..not too too hard ..back and forth with some push. More lubricant ..more hammer..try screw driver again..amd it popped open..took maybe 3 hours total time..but also overnight to let lub soak in. Was a tuff job...now to pump out thst old gas.
with my Kawasaki 650L tank lid got stuck, I'm trying your method with taping a bit of the key hole area and its work !!! Thanks Boss MAN!! u r the legend !!!
The gas cap was locked on my GSXR-1000. After spraying the lock with WD-40 multiple times, I tried to unlock it unsuccessfully, pushing on the cap to no avail. Then, I tried tapping around the edges of the lock, and it worked. Many thanks!
Mate you just saved me so much time, thank you. I just tapped a screwdriver around the tumbler and it immediately came free, taken the whole thing off now to give it a good clean - like you said its that horrible white gunk. Defo a Kawasaki issue as mine is a Vulcan S 650.
Literally sitting here at midnight trying to help me open the tank to my 05 R6 and was about to head to the locksmith tomorrow and here I find your video. 2 minutes outside doing what you did and my gas tank popped open first attempt with my key. Thank you!
Well Hell this worked like a charm. Like everyone else was about to throw the bike out (kidding but was looking at a costly trip to the shop for what amounted to a two minute fix.) Covered tank with a thick towel, and after spraying keyhole a lot with WD40 and tapping around medium force with a small hammer and a carriage bolt I was able to get it to open. Inner tab (there was only one on my '97 ZG1000) was stiff and a little corroded. Cylinder was fine. Lubed the tab release with more WD40 from the inside and now the mechanism works like a champ. You rule for this video.
Thank you for such thorough instructions. My gascap hasn't been open for a year and is stuck. Soaking with wd40 now. Was planning to try tapping next. I like the idea of using screwdriver to loosen the tumbler. Edit Using screwdriver to loosen tumbler was a mistake. It bent the thin metal cover.
It does work but I never liked the idea of using a screwdriver. The best solution I had was to use an Allen socket or anything with a large flat surface.
Bloody hell, my fuel caps been seized for some time now, abit of WD40 and some light tapping and now it's as good as new, still going to replace it though, mate you're a legend..
YOU ABSOLUTE MADMAN Thank you for this video. I did everything you did in this video and screamed at the top of my lungs when it turned. Saved myself a few hundred bucks, easily. I used chain lube because I didn't have any WD-40 nearby. Worked like a charm. Maybe 2 or 3 minutes of rotating tapping the cap, pushing chain lube into the keyhole, and trying the key. Easy.
Legend... I watched this at the gas station. I was driving on reserve already. xD Edit: In my case it worked by just hitting it with my fist for 2 Minutes.
the 22 dislikers just didn't hit it enough time or with the right velocity. you have to use some of your force, but just enough to not bend the metal. It will work 100% because the calcareous deposits will always crack at vibrations. good video!
Wow thanks for the post! I didn't have time to take anything apart, I almost ran out of gas! I couldn't get my key to turn at all.. I bought some wd-40, gave it a good spray.. tapped on it with a screwdriver and hammer for about 2min.. opened like a charm!! And now I'm about to enjoy the rest of my Saturday! Thanks again!
Dude, Worked like a "CHAMP" on my 07 ZX-14 stuck cap. Only took 45 minutes to get it "Free @ last-Free @ last!!!! Spray lubricant, tap all around locking mechanism a few times, use compresed air then repeat. Use key to feel it coming loose after "repeat" Great video & many thanks!!!
Thanks for this, it saved me from tearing my hair out as I hadn't a clue what to do. Suzuki GSXR 1100L (1991). It was the barrel and took me 5 mins of fettling as instructed, well the bike had been in my garage and it hadn't been opened for 20 years.
Thank-you so much for taking the time to upload this. I had just had a new key made from the ignition on my bike, but it wouldn't open the tank., I couldn't recall whether the bike had always had a different key. I used your tips and managed to get the cap undone in
Dang worked like a charm, latches were stuck from corrosion, few taps on both sides of the lock with allot wd40 , popped right open. Thanks for the video
Kawasaki Z1000SX (2015) with the same problem... It's pretty cold so not sure what exactly caused it (freezing or corrosion or a bit of both?). It was near freezing this morning, and now the sun is shining and it feels like spring again... So I put the bike outside in the sun (it's a black bike) in the hope it would help to fix the issue. Used WD40, hammer and screwdriver just as you said... Kept on hammering and spraying WD40 until after a couple of minutes I got it open again. YEAH! Something I also noticed when I got it open, there was a big pressure gas release when I got it finally open. But that's maybe because of the temp difference, (freezing this night, and pretty warm after a couple of hours in the spring sun). THX M8!
Thank you so much! It took me 5-10 minutes of repeating the same process. It's definitely worth giving a try. I would recommend using lock lube after if you used WD-40 to get it open.
Its a super simple fix but thank you for dumbing it down for a slow person like to figure it out. You helped me out so much. I thought I had to drop another $300 bills on the bike just to fix this issue. Anyway, Long story short Thank you for this Video helped me out.
Thanks, great video. Mine had seized up for months. Thanks to your video I realised it was the actual barrel. I had lubricated it, but to not avail. So I leveled the bike to get WD40 into the other side of the insides of the lock. Followed by tap and twist the barrel repeatedly. Eventually the WD40 got into the trouble spot and I could see the barrel finally had some movement. Put the key in and presto! Thanks again.
Thank you for this video. It's exactly why I needed to get my Speed Triple gas cap unstuck (WD-40 and perseverance). It was helpful to know about the aesthetic screws too. You rock!
Thanks for the post. Really helpful and I followed and it worked for me. Large quantities of WD40 is required ... I just kept the finger on the nozzle and flooded the lock. Not sure I would have got there without the tips and tricks to me confidence that it can be done ... as my key would not turn at all when I started no matter how much force I used.
Thank you for this video. I bent one key trying to get my cap open. All it took was tapping around it with a screwdriver and hammer like you said. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot .. I tried other ways but got no luck.. this method made it easy.. I spent around 40 mins hammering all around gas cap n 10 mins of it was on key hole n it did work..!!
I've got the same problem and tried wd-40 and a flat head screwdriver and for sure know it's the tumbler frozen in place. Was planning on just drilling it but will give your "persistance" method a try!
snowdaysrule2 I'd avoid drilling because you will get metal filings in your tank. Also it's a fire hazard. Just light taps and spraying will free it up. If not leave vinegar in the tumbler over night.
I greece them regularly so it stays smooth :) so once you find it a biot harder to open when fueling then need to repeat the greecing. I use the key greecer from WD, dont know its actual name but works great for the lock and the locking notches.
Thank you loads for making the video. I was all set to drill out the barrel on my zx10r then found your theory. It worked, took ages but exactly right. Cheers 👍👍👍
Thanks for the Vid 2004 GS500f Fuel Tank Cap has the same issue with the cap and ring connected via the hinge, tried mine took a long time , now its all good
Wow dude this actually worked for me! I thought to myself it wouldn't work cuz mine was so corroded but I thought why not give it a go and I sprayed some WD40 into the keyhole and gave the edge of the Keyhole a tap with a flat head screwdriver and hammer and!!!!!!!! It worked! The key turned! Thankyou so much!
Nice video. Trying to get mine off my Suzuki Bandit only got 6K on it after it being unused for 11 years. Cleaned the old fuel out and squirted some carb cleaner down the back of the carbs through the air box and it nearly fires so hoping with some fresh fuel in it will fire up. Annoyingly I cannot open my fuel cap. It's had lots of penetrating fluid squirted down the key but it will not turn and unlock. I have took out all the screws except one that will not remove (but I feel that's a dummy one anyway) but I can't get it out of the tank or the cap to pop up. I'm not sure the key is going fully in (very close) but stuck at the moment. It's like one of the barrel tumblers has dropped out of position. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.. Not tried knocking it with anything yet but more that reassured after watching this.
Thanks, I had same problem on my er6, loads of wd40, key in and out but no joy, finally got a bit of movement with more wd40 and by gently turning the barrel with a small screwdriver. 👍🏻😀
Having the same problem. Does it matter if I use WD40, or would a different lubricant made for locks be just as good for penetrating the corrosion? I have heard that WD-40 is bad long term because it attracts a lot of dirt/dust.
WD-40 is terrible as a lubricant. most people wrongly believe it is a lubricant. It is designed to Displace the water present therefore preventing corrosion. You can use another type of lubricant of course to clean it and work the lock, however it was all i had handy and is also what most people have in the shed.
So what do you use to keep the cap from corroding again lol, I got 08 zx10 same cap, and the wings are corroded on mine, lol luckily with brake cleaner and wiggling back and forth I got it open and there was literally corrosion growing like 1/4 inch off the wing assembly...
Just got mine off (SV650). Tabs had corroded solid :( Just had to undo the 5 screws and keep wiggling it until it came out. I already have a replacement cap but not sure what to do with the tank.
