How to unlock a seized motorbike fuel tank cap
มุมมอง 62K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short video tutorial on how to open/unlock a seized/stuck motorbike fuel tank cap. This video is specific to my Kawasaki Z750 2009 model however will work for most Bikes Items you will need 1 - Hammer 2 - Flat head screwdriver 3 - 5/32 Hex key or Allen key 4 - Rag 5 - "WD-40" or any other similar Water Displacement fuid 6 - Air duster 7 - Vinegar 8 - Your motorbike key 9 - Patience I ...
with my Kawasaki 650L tank lid got stuck, I'm trying your method with taping a bit of the key hole area and its work !!! Thanks Boss MAN!! u r the legend !!!
Thanks for the info Scott. I have a KTM 990 ADV, oiled it, smashed it, fiddled it and ..... wala.
Thank you so much! It took me 5-10 minutes of repeating the same process. It's definitely worth giving a try. I would recommend using lock lube after if you used WD-40 to get it open.
Shit video btw.
Seriously appreciate this vid,as was about to drill it as was that 😡
Absolute legend!! Took about 10mins of tapping away on the barrel with a screwdriver and hammer after soaking it in 3 in 1.. You the man!!!
Just unseized mine, thanks 😊
Thank you for such thorough instructions. My gascap hasn't been open for a year and is stuck. Soaking with wd40 now. Was planning to try tapping next. I like the idea of using screwdriver to loosen the tumbler. Edit Using screwdriver to loosen tumbler was a mistake. It bent the thin metal cover.
It does work but I never liked the idea of using a screwdriver. The best solution I had was to use an Allen socket or anything with a large flat surface.
Follow up. I had a serious seized gas cap. I used a high quality lubricant specialize in unseizing. A cloth then ribber hammer to shock lose. Triee the key many times. Buster lub worked well. Wd specialized worked well. A 3/8 3 inch flat head scre deiver. Make sure its skinny and put head angled to the inner top of lock..try to turn to the right..not too too hard ..back and forth with some push. More lubricant ..more hammer..try screw driver again..amd it popped open..took maybe 3 hours total time..but also overnight to let lub soak in. Was a tuff job...now to pump out thst old gas.
Amazing how many have this problem. My klt650 has seized ..will continue to try to clean and lubricate. Great vid
Mines playing up on my zzr1100 thanks for the video very helpful mate
I beat on my cap using the plastic handle of a large screwdriver, while at the same time lightly turning the key and it opened! Thanks for the video!
Many thanks! Copypast of previous remarks, followed your steps and it worked! Mark
Just followed your advice and bank on my patience payed off 👍👍
Worked for me! Thank you!
Mate you just saved me so much time, thank you. I just tapped a screwdriver around the tumbler and it immediately came free, taken the whole thing off now to give it a good clean - like you said its that horrible white gunk. Defo a Kawasaki issue as mine is a Vulcan S 650.
The gas cap was locked on my GSXR-1000. After spraying the lock with WD-40 multiple times, I tried to unlock it unsuccessfully, pushing on the cap to no avail. Then, I tried tapping around the edges of the lock, and it worked. Many thanks!
I greece them regularly so it stays smooth :) so once you find it a biot harder to open when fueling then need to repeat the greecing. I use the key greecer from WD, dont know its actual name but works great for the lock and the locking notches.
Thanks, great video. Mine had seized up for months. Thanks to your video I realised it was the actual barrel. I had lubricated it, but to not avail. So I leveled the bike to get WD40 into the other side of the insides of the lock. Followed by tap and twist the barrel repeatedly. Eventually the WD40 got into the trouble spot and I could see the barrel finally had some movement. Put the key in and presto! Thanks again.
Well Hell this worked like a charm. Like everyone else was about to throw the bike out (kidding but was looking at a costly trip to the shop for what amounted to a two minute fix.) Covered tank with a thick towel, and after spraying keyhole a lot with WD40 and tapping around medium force with a small hammer and a carriage bolt I was able to get it to open. Inner tab (there was only one on my '97 ZG1000) was stiff and a little corroded. Cylinder was fine. Lubed the tab release with more WD40 from the inside and now the mechanism works like a champ. You rule for this video.
YES!!!!! IT WORKED!
Thank you so much brother! I havent ridden my z1000 in months (almost a year), so i got a new battery and wanted to syphon the old gas out and fill it with fresh gas. The key would turn but it wouldnt open. I tried your hammer method and it worked beautifully within 2 minutes. I mainly banged over where i knew the tabs were. My problem was the wings. They were corroded to shit, so once i got it open, i covered the tank with towels and squirted a little brake cleaner into the wings, turned the key again and again, then put penetrating oil into them, turned and turned it, then went at it with a wire brush, then lubricated it.
the barrel lock is oxidising
the lock barrel is a seal with a Oring at the bottom so all fluid has to overflow the lock if you want to clean
Thanks for the post. Really helpful and I followed and it worked for me. Large quantities of WD40 is required ... I just kept the finger on the nozzle and flooded the lock. Not sure I would have got there without the tips and tricks to me confidence that it can be done ... as my key would not turn at all when I started no matter how much force I used.
Nice video. Trying to get mine off my Suzuki Bandit only got 6K on it after it being unused for 11 years. Cleaned the old fuel out and squirted some carb cleaner down the back of the carbs through the air box and it nearly fires so hoping with some fresh fuel in it will fire up. Annoyingly I cannot open my fuel cap. It's had lots of penetrating fluid squirted down the key but it will not turn and unlock. I have took out all the screws except one that will not remove (but I feel that's a dummy one anyway) but I can't get it out of the tank or the cap to pop up. I'm not sure the key is going fully in (very close) but stuck at the moment. It's like one of the barrel tumblers has dropped out of position. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.. Not tried knocking it with anything yet but more that reassured after watching this.
Dang worked like a charm, latches were stuck from corrosion, few taps on both sides of the lock with allot wd40 , popped right open. Thanks for the video
Thank you thank you thank you
Vinegar and patience! Thanks for the tips my man
Literally sitting here at midnight trying to help me open the tank to my 05 R6 and was about to head to the locksmith tomorrow and here I find your video. 2 minutes outside doing what you did and my gas tank popped open first attempt with my key. Thank you!
ima try this my bike has been on the chopping block and im finally gettying into the fuel tank as its got 5 year old fuel and bike wouldnt run
Brilliant advice, nearly snapped my key off trying to open. WD40; tap barrel; key wiggle; repeat.
the 22 dislikers just didn't hit it enough time or with the right velocity. you have to use some of your force, but just enough to not bend the metal. It will work 100% because the calcareous deposits will always crack at vibrations. good video!
I'm going to try that tomorrow! Thanks for the tip friend!
Get a hammer. Seriously! Hello fellow cycle-heads. My friend neglected his ride for 3 years(yes, shame on him). Gas cap key would turn but not open. I got a small rubber mallet and tapped the gas cap while turning the key. Three taps was all it took. Vibration lubricant, lol. Good luck friends...now get out and ride 😎👍
If wasn't your video I wouldn't be able to get it done... Thanks a lot
Thanks for the video! You made it so easy to get my gas cap open on my Z1000.
Thanks for this, it saved me from tearing my hair out as I hadn't a clue what to do. Suzuki GSXR 1100L (1991). It was the barrel and took me 5 mins of fettling as instructed, well the bike had been in my garage and it hadn't been opened for 20 years.
Thank you!
Very helpful! It’s people like you that make TH-cam work for so many in the same situation. I appreciate it!
Hi, So do you think the 87 Ninja 750 gas cap assembly has one of those hidden screws?.
Thanks a lot mate. Had my Yamaha R15 fuel lock seize up today. A quick tap with a hammer and it opened right up.
Legend... I watched this at the gas station. I was driving on reserve already. xD Edit: In my case it worked by just hitting it with my fist for 2 Minutes.
I’ve spent months trying to get my tank open... looked at several videos & nothing worked! I was about to take the tank off like you said in this video but glad I came across your video! You’ve saved me sooo much money! Thank you for posting this
Kawasaki Z1000SX (2015) with the same problem... It's pretty cold so not sure what exactly caused it (freezing or corrosion or a bit of both?). It was near freezing this morning, and now the sun is shining and it feels like spring again... So I put the bike outside in the sun (it's a black bike) in the hope it would help to fix the issue. Used WD40, hammer and screwdriver just as you said... Kept on hammering and spraying WD40 until after a couple of minutes I got it open again. YEAH! Something I also noticed when I got it open, there was a big pressure gas release when I got it finally open. But that's maybe because of the temp difference, (freezing this night, and pretty warm after a couple of hours in the spring sun). THX M8!
Thank you loads for making the video. I was all set to drill out the barrel on my zx10r then found your theory. It worked, took ages but exactly right. Cheers 👍👍👍
my whole lock base cracked off the rim 😂
Thank you so much on this
Its a super simple fix but thank you for dumbing it down for a slow person like to figure it out. You helped me out so much. I thought I had to drop another $300 bills on the bike just to fix this issue. Anyway, Long story short Thank you for this Video helped me out.
I owe you the savings of hiring a pro to do this.
