Thank you for your helpful and informative videos. I'm very new to working in clay -- currently taking a class. Just love your manner of explaining things, including the fact that it is REAL and unedited. Especially like the fact that you give the "whys" for all the things you are doing, including various options folks could use. Kudos from a fellow USAF veteran! ~~Debz
Thanks so much for your instructional videos! Love them. Please do more on decorating. What are washed and how do you work with them. How is skip used? Engobes? Watching for the favorite tools video. Again, thank you.
Thanks Jessica for your fun, lively, and informative videos. I just watched transferring preprinted decals, Mishima & sprig molds which was my favorite so far. I like how detailed your instruction is & suggesting vendors for specific products & tools is also helpful. I also like that you allow spontaneity in your videos, because clay is a very plastic & expressive medium. I was a ceramics major years ago at Cal State University Long Beach but had to go into business admin to be self sufficient. Now retired, returning to clay full time (except also perform on Bassoon in a community band). I live half year in FL & half in NC Blueridge Mtns. Looking forward to watching more from you. Good job!
Hello Jessica. I like the way you explaine things with your easy mood and professional way of working. Is it possible to do this wax technic on a bisque fired piece? Anja
Thank you! I have not tried this technique. It solves the issues I was having trying to draw on mugs. I have some wax resist. Ill try it and see how it turns out.
Hi your work is incredible can you tell me more about wax resist can we make it at home and which other kind of clay can be used instead of pottery clay
Intriguing. I will definitely try this when I am not at the wheel. Jessica, thanks for adding some fun to a potentially dry (no pun intended) subject...
Thank you so much for your helpful videos! Do you have a video where you show how to trace from a template for those of us who would like to transfer an image, or who just can't draw? If not, would you do one?
I left you a comment or question about your roller, but I found it. Thanks though. I want to sculpt a flat or partially flat sculpt of my grandson. I am a painter, I have not worked with clay at all, I have looked at a lot of your videos and others, I love how you teach. Here is what I need to know what type of clay do I need, I am buying the same electric kiln you have and clay roller. I have the tools lots of them, I have a feeling these tools will be like my brushes, where I have a lot of them I just can't enough. 2nd question will there be instructions on the temperature setting and anything else I might need to know (I don't know what I don't know). Thank you for your wonderful and inspiring videos. Sincerely, Lilly
I have a lot of videos on how to fire your pottery and using a kiln. I Mohave a few sculpting classes as well but none on sculpting people...yet ;) go to tv.clayshare.com for my classes and ClayShare.com for my blog and news
Hi Jessica, I should have watched this video before I did my mug. So, I have a carved mug but didn't put the wax on before hand. Is it ok to put the black underglaze to fill my carvings now, wipe it off and then clear glaze it? Or did I ruin it by not waxing first?
You did not ruin it.Yes, you can apply the underglaze and then wipe back the excess and it will stay in the lines. It may not be a crisp as it would have been with wax but I am sure it will still be amazing! :) Jess
I want to paint a sink. I moved into an old house, and at first I thought to replace it, but I am not made of money, I am a crafter, so I decided I want to paint the old sink. I have been searching all my options, porcelain paint pens, and paint, is what I decided, I started looking at all the designs for painted sinks, loved them, my sister gave me a coloring book, that had really cool designs in them, so I want to pick something. I can not put the sink in the oven, so it will have to dry, but I thought I could purchase some small tile and paint them in several color of blue and silver or gold or both, in solid and may a print, to match the sink.
That’s awesome.. Thank You! 😊😍just wondering .. would it be ok to underglaze another color and then coat with wax and then carve and then do a darker color for the lines? I would think it’s ok as long as the underglaze is dried before putting on the wax resist? Thank You! 😊😍
Hi First thank you for your lovely video. At the end you showed a cup with paint and glaze . When do you paint it after the first fire? Or before? If so what do you do with the wax? Thank you so much.
I am not Jessica but I have seen a lot of her videos so I will try to explain what she normally does. After the fireball glaze is laid in the carved lines, she cleans the pot and fires it. This way the wax resist melts off. After the first fire she dilutes underglaze colours and she uses them to add colours to the black pattern, like a watercolour. she has said this is quite a time consuming exercise, but worth it. then she puts a clear glaze on the piece and fires it again.
Anne Rinaldo that’s right! I have used this technique both at cone 6 and at cone 05 (with different clays and clear glazes obviously 😊) Once the pot is bisque fired and it has the black lines of the drawing outline, you use diluted underglazes to obtain a sort of water color effect and then you use a clear glaze (best if zinc free) It looks lovely!
Thank you for sharing this technique ~!! I only had the Amaco wax resist but just had to give it a try~!! So Far my mugs look SO CUTE~!! I'll Bisque fire this week hopefully, but now am curious on adding the color~!! Is that something you may be able to share on a video...I was thinking just 1-2 coats of underglaze on my doodles with a clear glaze over it...is that the right idea? Good Luck in the Snow Storm....I'm in DownEast Maine & we're supposed to get clobbered this week too ~!!
I love your work it's beautiful and something I've always wanted to learn. I'm doing Christmas ornaments with paper clay today and was watching how I could decorated & color them when I can across your channel. I would really love to learn, but not quite sure how to get started. I have Multiple Sclerosis and I can't drive I need something to keep my mind and hands busy so I'm home during day unit my husband gets home around 5:30. With MS the saying goes if you don't use it you'll lose it, but sometimes you still lose it ,and you never know when or where it's going to effect what part of your body next. The thing about it is you can't get over stressed or over worked or hot. I am having Trimblers in my hands and I need something that I can concentrate on the and try to keep my hand -eye coronation busy. My husband made his mom some really nice set of vegetables to hang in her kitchen and a elephant cookie jar well that one was kind of iffy to figure out its has a short stubby noise. Lol. He took art in college he enjoyed it. So know you have my life history. How did you get started? It looks like you've done it a while just by watching you I'm so glad I came across your site. Thank you and I pray you and your family has a Very Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!
Thank you so much for simplifying this technique. I've watched other videos where they scrape the underglaze off, after they carved in their designs, and that seems like it not only scratches the pottery piece, but it also diminishes the design and fine lines. LOVE the idea of just waxing the whole piece and then underglazing after it's been fired. Or I guess you don't have to use underglazes, you could use regular glazes. Do you use underglazes and then fire, and then clear and do a third firing? Or do you underglaze and then clear in the same process? Thanks. Loved your video!!!
Do you use a clear glaze on top o your underglaze for this project? If so do you fire the underglaze before you put the clear glaze on? Love your videos!
Jessica, great video! Question: you wax, you carve, you add UG, and then wipe away. At that point you glaze fire? IF you want to add color afterwards, you add more UG and then glaze fire again? Thanks for all the wonderful information you share!!!
I’ve been noticing how you hold the pin tool. Do you hold it that way for a reason? Lucky me I have arthritis and holding tools or brushes for long periods of time hurt my hands, was wondering if the way you are holding it works better for you. Thanks!
Can this method be used for bisque ware fired at 06? If so I’d love to show this method to my ceramic club. We can’t fire anything above 06. Thanks love your videos:0) PS love the costume
this was great to watch! Love your technique and personality. So after filling the lines with color and it is fired to bisque. If i paint solid glaze color, will it fill the black lines ?
Nice so if you want to engrave directly on your ceramics not toner transfer of an image on tissue paper there is a way to color your engraved lines easily. Wax is key though i am still unsure what materials interms of glazes , inks ...etc are usable for edible dishware /pot ware. If your just using your pots for show or art decor or plants its not going to matter but eating on it i am still iffy on it.
Hi I having trouble with paint on sculpture eye pupil. I painted it with underglaze black and then the clear gloss. When I fire it, and it came out the eye pupil smear. What did I do wrong? Is there a way to solve it?
Great technique I love it! I guess when you are going to colour in areas like you showed, you will have to leave those areas un-waxed? Or what? Thanks for sharing, best wishes Bob 🇬🇧
I realize that your focus is your website (which is great, btw), but as many products as you use, you should sign up for affiliate marketing. That way, you’ll make a little off purchases of the products you recommend AND people won’t have to keep asking you EXACTLY what you’re using. Just something to consider. Thank you for such great content!
Lisa, I don't usually do silk screening on clay as part of my process but I have wanted to try it so it may be something I do in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm a gatherer . I'm gathering information and you my dear have your own playlist on my TH-cam channel that is how much I adore you! Love your videos love the information, simple, understanding, Direct. OK maybe not so direct lol 😋
I like that you dressed up as a Snapchat filter. lol I just watched a fairly elucidative video on this same technique but the jerk DIDN'T SHOW THE END RESULTS!!! 😨 Gotta show a finished piece to sell the audience on the technique. Right? Right. So thank you for showcasing the payoff at the end.
Leave your wax brushes in soapy water and you can keep the brushes forever. That way there is less garbage in the world! More money in your pocket! Imagine that.
I liked your explanation but I didn't like to see you use a sponge brush once and then throw it away when you could wash it and use it again. People in the United States never think about all the damage you do to the planet with all the garbage you produce because of your laziness. Very sad
Looking excellent and so beautiful mam

Great videos! Thanks for including so much detail. And actually showing what a finished product looks like. The up-close shots are really helpful too.
Great ideas. Think I will try the linocut look with this technique. Thanks.
This is an excellent tutorial. Jesshima sounds awesome.
Awesome, I love this idea
Love this technique! I’ll be trying this in a week when I begin my independent study for next semester!
Just love watching you Jessica, Sooo much fun !!!!

Ik vindt je uitleg en voorbeelden geweldig ….jij hebt mij al vaak gered van glazuur fouten 🤩🤩🤩groetjes uit België 👋👋👋👋
I’ve never made it to the end of a pottery video... you kept me here until the end! You’re amazing and now I want to take up a pottery hobby 🧐
Hi your work is incredible can you tell me more about wax resist can we make it at home and which other kind of clay can be used instead of pottery clay
Jessica looks so cute in her costume!
Very informative video. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.

youre so wholesome and educational! thank you!!!

Super cool video. I love Mishima...thank you from belgium
Beautiful
Great! Thanks for sharing the process as well as the products you use!
I hit the thumbs up in Sheri Hartman's comment to give you two thumbs up...
Great video Jessica - loved it.
That's a great technique my dear, your artwork is so well done.
Thnaks :)
I love Mishima. And I love doing it
Me too Priscilla!
Priscilla Gray love watching your techniques. Very instructive.
I hope to get a wheel one day to throw. Like I need one more hobby lol.. Beautiful videos.. xo

You've just simplified the process for me :) Happy Day 2u
Can you put wax over a piece of bisque ware and carve a design before using underglaze then refire and then over glaze ?
Ok I think I am in, I love the technique.
Hi
First thank you for your lovely video.

I think holding a tool is a personal choice, there is no "right" way to hold it just what works for you and feels good for you. :)
Hi, love this project! I have 2 questions
1, what kind of clay did you use here?
2, how many minutes, hours or days did it sit out before carving?
Can this method be used for bisque ware fired at 06? If so I’d love to show this method to my ceramic club. We can’t fire anything above 06. Thanks love your videos:0) PS love the costume
thank you from Belgium. I'll try it.
this was great to watch! Love your technique and personality. So after filling the lines with color and it is fired to bisque. If i paint solid glaze color, will it fill the black lines ?
I love this demo and you are adorable! What is that square thing to the right of your slab roller? Thank you!
Do you colour/glaze after bisque firing or is it all 1 firing?

Is this technique done on greenware or aleady bisqued? Our class will not allow us to use wax in the bisque kiln.

Great Tips! Thanks again🌻
Can this be done on a red clay ? And use a light color for the pattern?

Hi! How do u clean the wax to colour it? Thanks!
Does this work on bisques pieces?
Great lesson. Great personality. Thank you. fr Atlanta.
Thanks Donna ;)
I assume they are all glazed with clear glaze?
good class! and u look nice.
Do u put underglaze or glaze after firing?
Great tips! Thank you x 🎃
Glad you like them! :)
More videos Jessica please!!
Great video! Thank you! Can you do a video on silkscreen printing for clay? Thanks:)
Lisa, I don't usually do silk screening on clay as part of my process but I have wanted to try it so it may be something I do in the future. Thanks for the suggestion!
