- The Half-Life 2 coast levels are some of the most open ended maps in the Half-Life universe. It’s where the game starts to feel more like an open world. The coast has a big difference compared to other chapters because most are in relatively cramped areas with long-winded story segments. It is more apparent at the coast than anywhere else in City 17 that the Combine are indeed draining the natural resources of the planet. But almost 20 years after its release, it still has some flaws…. sometimes…. very bad flaws.

First time I played half life 2 20 years ago I didn't realize I should flip the buggy with gravity gun. I thought i had to reenable the power or something to make the crane work. I made the whole chapter on foot until the gunship fight. After that the rebel guy would not open the gate until you were in the car 😂
And in my defense I was 9 and didn't speak English and Half Life 1 had a lot ofoments like that. Go somewhere to enable or open something and go back to use the thing/door

Not enough build up. If it was normal->irritated->annoyed->rage, instead of jumping into rage directly, it would've felt more natural.

Interesting how low-poly the map geometries are, even compared to later source games. Without the textures it sometimes looks like SM64. I guess the source engine can handle much more but they had to make it low-poly to make it run on peoples PCs in 2005...

Highway 17 is a sea not an ocean
Many people don't know the difference
for a sea to become a sea it needs to be conected with a river. and for a ocean to become an ocean it needs to be conected with another ocean or sea.

This is by far one of the best half life 2 facts video i have ever seen, it is just delightful
3:09 This is incorrect. Take a right when going through the door into the Shorepoint Base warehouse (the area where Winston gets hit), and you'll find a crate containing an energy ball.
8:03 This gate can also be skipped by just jumping round the side of it.
11:33 The same issue can be seen in the rock props blocking you from the sea in the Antlion Guard arena in Sandtraps.
13:45 Pretty sure this is due to all those props being clipped through the ground.
15:15 That's due to those holes in the house's back wall actually being props.
Also, here's a bit of trivia that I know: In d2_coast_01, for some reason the brown gravel-y dirt near the road leading to d2_coast_03 has the property of being slippery.

@@nikkat In case you're thinking this: No, I didn't go to check if there were any energy balls before the start of Highway 17 after watching this video. I actually stumbled upon that crate a while ago.
Also, I just realised that you could also witness the "energy ball flipping the buggy upright" behaviour by progressing through Highway 17 without the buggy, and then going all the way back to d2_coast_01.

This was a great video and a format. Interesting you started with coast but it probably makes sense because whoever was responsible hammering the chapters was a weird chap. Coast is my favorite chapter in Half-Life 2 and I think it still is after watching this but fuck you. Good video. Make more if you can.

in coast11, there is a floating orange box placed out of bounds at the left side of a map and for god knows whatever reason plays the generator noise
Considering Half Life 2 was the first game to use the Source Engine, it's a PRIME example of how scuffed the Source Engine is.

Game was made around.. 20 years ago.. Tech was older back then, people looked over these things and weren’t as nit picky. Do ya think VALve really cares anymore? They’re not gonna update it, so don’t get mad, get even. Go fix the glitches and mistakes yourself if you’re able to make such a ‘complaint’ video. Hell, make a mod that fixes all these mistakes! Honestly, just my thoughts, if you’re going to complain about a 20 year old game that has issues and mistakes, just know that you can fix these issues (if you do know how to that is).

extremely much nitpicking for a game which is released in 2004. that year the max ram capacity was 2 GB as i researched. The decision they made was mandatory.
What does that have to do with all the mapper mistakes, 🤡?
Ram has nothing to do with the games several map issues,if these were fixed back then it wouldn’t impact the performance at all except for specific optimizations they did (windows fading out from afar)

@@CodeNameBhop I do not know much technical knowledge about that. I just think that mapper mistakes was made on purpose due to 2000's technical limitations such as CPU,GPU etc. However, wish they have fixed that with updates.
