2013 Nissan Altima Starter Replacement 3.5 SL

- In this video I give step-by-step instructions on replacing the starter in a 2013 Nissan Altima 3.5 SL. I tell the tools used and socket sizes. I show the transaxle dipstick that must be removed, how to remove it, and how I plugged the hole to keep dirt out. I also show the Starter Shim that must be reused in order to get the new starter lined up with the ring gear teeth correctly when it engages, though I mistakenly called it a gasket in the recording.
As with my previous Nissan Altima video on Spark plugs, this is something just about anyone with minimal automotive knowledge can accomplish. I performed the entire replacement in the parking lot of a store in less than 3 hours including the time it took to record.

Thanks for the video. I was able to remove (first time) and replace my starter. I appreciate the step by step instructions for removal. So many of the videos I saw just jump right in and don't show the steps for removal, which for me is the most difficult part. Thanks again for the short but thorough video.
Thank you for the thoughtful reply! I try to keep it simple and thorough. I think most people can fix their own vehicles. I think some are just afraid they don’t know the steps and I’m trying to change that. Let me know if there are other areas of repair you want to see.
2012 Maxima : for reference, starter bolts are 14 mm. Everything else is the same. Thanks my virtue for the video, helped out excellent

Those 2 bolts on the under plate for the battery holding the wiring changed my life. I spent the most time here. Removing and putting back on.
This video was a savior for me. Our 2008 Altima starter puked and I used this video to replace it. Couple of comments. The under plate for the battery was a big challenge. Those two bolts for the wiring harness were a bear. Could not use a socket on one of them. We also had a different wiring clip on the battery plate than what was in the video. Thankfully my neighbor was able to figure it out. My neighbor also had some smaller socket wrenches that were helpful. The bottom bolt on the starter was a challenge. My neighbor had a camera probe that helped us see it. We did not remove the whole air unit we just moved it around to get the computer out. We also didn’t have a gasket. Loved the glove tip for the dipstick

I'm going to tackle this issue over the weekend. My 2007 Nissan Altima 3.5 starter is on the way out. (187,000 Miles) Constantly clicks when attempting to start, but will usually turn over after the 2nd or 3rd time. I'm living on a prayer right now lol. Thanks for the video! I have the same car and also need to replace the starter. How did it go?
So did replacing the starter fix the issue? I have over 142k on my 2009 3.5L V6 Murano..same thing over the past year where it would take about 2-3 clicks to get the starter going and just today it will not start.
Nice video - I used your process as the basis for replacing the starter on my 2009 Nissan Murano. Very similar since same 3.5L v6 engine. After carefully studying the wiring diagram and noticing everything else electrical works, inclusive of the brake lamp switch which is required for starting the engine, I concluded something had to be wrong with the starter. The exposed wiring from the starter solenoid the the starter motor body had corroded/frayed over time and finally broke off, stopping 12v from reaching the starter. I am shocked that this is exposed wire instead of something that has thick insulation jacket on it. Your video was spot on with one caveat - the starter solenoid flange nut is not technically 1/2" - it's still a 12mm nut...the reason you can still use a 1/2" socket wrench is because 12mm = 0.472".

So I followed this video and replaced my starter flawlessly. Very well done video. I just have a question about "This little guy" at 3:14. I know that's the ground wire and when I was taking it out the first time, I broke off a little bit of the clip, it still goes in but easy to pull out. Anyway, replaced my starter, drove for two days, dead again. Noticed "That little guy" was already out when I started investigating. Is that actually important for the ground wire to function or is it just there to help hold it in place and offers no real value?
That clip shouldn’t be important for the ground wire to function if your ground wire is in good shape and where it connects to the battery and Car are good connections. I have had to replace the entire fuse block that attaches to the top of the battery once already. You may check that setup to see if it is in need of repair or replacement. Also make sure you don’t have any corrosion in your battery terminals, relays, or wires at the starter.

Is this the same concept for a 14 Maxima SV
I am not sure. I believe there were a number of big changes made to a few Nissan models in 2014 but how that effects the starter replacement I don’t know.
Could that be the issue on my 2012 maxima? new battery, no crank or anything, no ignition lights either, just headlights and interior lights, start button doesn't move from the lock position. Thanks for the feedback.
I am not sure I am fully understanding your issue. What ignition lights are you talking about? Are you talking about the lights in the gauge cluster? If so, I think you may have an issue with either the power or ground cable somewhere. You may check the fuses under the hood as well.

Thanks for getting back, the dash lights don't turn on only the interior dome light and headlights, the push start key stays on the lock position, doesn't move when pressed to acc or the on position therefore no crank at all, just installed a new battery and the fuses seem to be fine when I checked. Also, apparently this year model is when they discontinued the escl from the steering column from older models and I checked underneath and it didn't come with it so it can't be that either. Appreciate the help.

So I’m having the same problem. My lights work dash/radio all of that comes on. But when I try to start the car it completely hesitates to start.
That is strange. Let let me do some research and get back to you. I’ve never had this issue myself. My guess is maybe the battery has a bad cell and simply doesn’t have the cranking amps and the computer isn’t allowing the car to even try to start but there is enough power to run the things that don’t require a lot of amps. You might have it tested and let me know what comes of it and I’ll see what I can find out for you as well.
After I put everything back together the car wouldn't start it had a little light on the dash in the shape of a car and it was red and inside of it was icky don't know what happened
Did you get this issue figured out? The red car with something inside it is, I believe, part of the anti-theft system. Maybe a loose ground wire somewhere??
where did you get the new starter?
I got it either at Oreillys or Auto Zone. You may price it at Napa or another preferred auto parts store

Do you mean the plastic clips that hold wires? If that’s what you mean i usually just use a pair of pliers on the back side to squeeze it and I gently pry with a screwdriver on the other side to pop it out.

Plz help me with CVT oil quantity...for 3.5 2013
The only advice I can give on this is to check the owners manual to see what the manufacturer’s recommendation is.
I check the whole manual.. they mention only about Engine Oil there is nothing mention regarding CVT oil quantity.
Right now I put 4 liters oil .. I feel little bit jerks while driving slow..
Why not get it from underneath.

Starter is on top of the transmission at a 10-11 o’clock position. Going from the bottom would be going in blind with twice the effort.
I concur with dvenom32. Due to the transaxle location with starter on top, there is 1: no good way to see what you are doing and 2: no good way to even get tools into the proper location and 3: no way to remove the starter as there is not enough room for it to pass around the transaxle.
