arborist460 I don't see any problem with it if no one else is put at risk. It should be up to the individual to decide.

I prefer to work as a team now but years ago when I was a faller I would work alone all the time I liked the peace and didn't have to worry about anyone else! So I see no problem!!👍

Love the video. The thought crossed my mind that perhaps those people taking a picture of your truck were fans. I think if I saw your truck I would be taking a picture. Tempted to put a reg sign on my own truck and take a picture of it. Battery saw looked perfect for that tree. Made everything less clamorous for all the paparazzi in the bushes.

I have a lot of respect for you man. I've been contract climbing, full time on payroll for several different companies, and done my own solo side job's a lot for the last 14 year's. I like the old school climbing style along with the newer more modern techniques mixed together accordingly when needed that you use that I've seen on your video's. Out of all the people on youtube in our industry of doing tree work you are one of the few I listen to all the way through because I always hear or see something new that catch's my attention like what were you doing when you wrapped your line under the clip on your sling shot pole/ pole saw pole? Have a good one. Work, cut, and climb safe man.

I appreciate the the story you started with, had me chuckling a bit.
I have been climbing/cutting about 9 years now and because of my schedule most of the work I do is solo. I am by nature very "particular" about how I do most everything, working with trees even more so. Knowing and understanding the hazards that are involved makes me much more aware of what I am doing and how I am doing it.
I have received a lot of comments telling me how dangerous and wrong it is. I have even had people tell me to stop and if I continue to work solo I will end up dead.
Well, I believe it's the same for just about anything. Some people are able to do this type of work ( or any work ) solo and never have a problem but, some people shouldn't. From what I've seen and learned about people is some have the ability to work, be aware and alert to what they are doing and how they are doing it, having an understanding of the consequences of using "bad" technique and not doing it.
I think I'm beginning to ramble so I'll stop.
Hopefully at least some of what I wrote can be understood.
Thanks for sharing your insight on this part of tree work Reg.
I have a lot of respect for your skill and professionalism and it's encouraging
to me to hear what you have to say about it.
    Keep yourself safe.
    Randy

What I saw in this video was a man truly at peace with his mind, his environment, and his actions. Beautifully done. I have just started my journey with trees. I bought a peice of wooded land with a house and garage right in the middle. I have never been a person that hires others to do my chores and am using this opportunity to train myself in another skill in order to protect my property and my family. I appreciate what you and the community do. Not only in your tree work but also in sharing yourself with us on youtube. Thank You!

Reg, great vid and solid delivery. I work alone often as well. As a rock climber and mountaineer I rope solo climb as well. It is freeing and invigorating. After doing the tree and evening descends - clean-up can get a bit lonely .... haha. Interesting is that one has to invest in good methodology and one has to check ones ego. I had to learn different protocols to safety check myself especially when dehydrated and tired. It can be very cost effective even when you have to solo rig a tree down. Best of luck - live at the center of your dream!

    Hi Reg,
I always work alone because of the prices for tree work in my area (I'd charge only a couple hundred bucks for this work).
This is what works for me:
Tell the customer(when possible) that you are working alone and he is saving money and he would need to help you during the day. Usually I ask them to free rope or disconnect loop runners.
I like ms150 - ms661 combination and go small. With 150 I can better control branches and trow them away from power lines etc. Then with 661 it's just quicker to slice a tree.
Tie a rope bag 5 - 6 feet off the ground to the tree. This way fallen branches will be below your rope and you don't have to carry a rope with you. Lately I'm using 75 feet 11mm rope most of the time and don't need a bag at all.
Customers don't like to wait for me to call back after I come down from a tree and find another arborist quickly. You can build bluetooth headset for your helmet pretty cheap - that's what I did this winter. This way you will not be missing important calls, just make sure that you record all the calls and can listen to them again at home.
On big jobs remember to take oil, gas and water up to the tree.
Always looking for ways to simplify my life.

I laughed out loud the first time I listened to your story. Your timing and straight forward approach made it humorous. I'm 51 and do climbing work, sometimes solo, as often as I can, as my primary work is safety contracting. The other day I looked down and was surprised by a stain in my green climbing pants and after getting over the shock of a stain in that spot, I busted out laughing remembering your story. Glad to hear there are apparently no "PLUMBING PROBLEMS!" I took a fair sized pine down not to long ago that the folks had me look at years ago, they finally decided it was time, Heavy leaner towards the neighbor's house, with multiple tops. I felt it was a short stubby tree, that would not take to long. Turned out after I got up in it there were not the three tops you could see, but a total of nine, with the weight in every direction. Like you said, it always seems that there is more to a job than what we first perceived. Good Video, thanks Reg

Hi Reg. Thanks for sharing your work alone experience and opinion. I also do work alone from time to time. Over here it´s obligation to have a second climber on site...BUT the big problem is that I sometimes (not always) watch my workmate from the top of the tree realising there´s not any chance for him to come up where I am to save me in case anything would happen. So the regulation says you must have a second climber even if he did his course 10 yrs ago and did no climbing for the last 9 yrs...with knowing that it all comes down to the point that you are fully responsible for yourself and your safety ! Like you said you always have to be fully concentrated and know what you do...finally you´re alone anyway...not the best english but I think you know what I wanted to say...stay safe...best REGards....

    • @Recoates
      @Recoates  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

A slim chance of rescue is better than none at all, Thomas. Id rather have a second guy on site, but its not always practical or economical. But, if I spent my life worrying about all the what ifs, Id probably never leave the house. So, I do my best to approach situations logically, and determine what is or isn't an acceptable risk or situation.

I think if you are well prepared, take your time & take as few risks as possible you'll be okay. If alone, I'd always take my phone up the tree with me as a precaution. Love your humor. I run the Sena intercoms. Allows you to take phone calls while in the tree. People think its pretty funny when you tell them your in a tree.

definitely goods and bad with either, more relaxed solo go at your own pace take time you may not when someone is looking up at you working in the tree. Certain jobs I get into the second person makes the day/job that much easier! Great content, and the battery powered saw looked to hold its own with what you were doing with it. Keep up the great work!

    I like your business sense.
Every successful business is built on quality workmanship. You're only ever as good as your last job and the best advertising you can't buy is word of mouth from a completely satisfied customer.
Saying that, quality workmanship isn't enough because you also need a competitive edge and that means efficiencies.
I had my own poly welding company but I'm now retired.
I hated and avoided working hourly rates from my first major job because I found out after the fact that we'd been booked into the onsite mining camp for a month yet we'd been in and out in five days.
That was a mistake but we were never forgotten by the mine engineers who followed the work just like we did.
On one job building a new mine that took us 9 months to complete we were told afterwards that all the tenderers for the project were told they had to use us for all their poly work.
That's the advertising you can't buy and worked out to an hourly rate I knew I was worth.

I’m a soloist too and so was my dad in this work. I love it and want it to be that way for as long as I can. I believe it’s the best way to roll most of the time

Roundheads n Cavaliers mate, DUDLEY DO-RIGHT is always sneaking up on me as well....i do exactly what you do but generally use the householder, kit him up and he's my labourer (if not too old or a female , this is not your average womans work) I drop the price and they love to help doing basic stuff, its good for the soul a bit of graft......but i never let them operate the chipper alone...ohhh no. I use a groundie now n again when doing big branches that need rigging. There are more of us out there than you know. Stay safe brother.

In my opinion the problem with today's society is that most people think they are somehow entitled to what someone else does, they think they have the right to tell you or others how to do their work. It sickens me that those judgemental people are out there, they are more busy poking their noses into other people's daily life rather than taking care of their own and minding their own business. I don't think anyone should tell you what you should do or even JUDGE you on what you do. Stay safe out there and keep doing what YOU enjoy doing!

Recently discovered your channel via August Hunicke's channel.
As an older guy trying to get into the firewood business (e.g. "Tim H. Gruchow") and "wannabee" tree climber for tree removals inspired especially by "Tim H. Gruchow" who is in the business and "Terry Hale" who is older than I am and has some climbing videos -- I much appreciate the educational/instruction aspects of your videos where you consciously share tips and info about what/how you are doing. Thanks!

Working alone especially when starting out is where you perfect your skills( eg cutting and holding and stacking branches from the tree) and then working with others you carry on learning and getting better. And just not getting cocky!

Great video, watched most of them I reckon, good to have someone down to earth and knowledgeable of the work and what is involved.

    really enjoy them.

I noticed you do everything well thought out and deliberate Reg. You are created for this kind of work, I thought it was awesome how you even watch the speed at which the clouds are moving so you can see the wind coming💝 I grew up in New Mexico and the first time I ever saw a lumber jack was in Seattle, my children and I were watching out our sliding glass door at a man shimmy up a tall tree ☺ we watched in amazement, you guys are definately talented at what you do. I don't know any person who could do that work. I know I can't ☺ I got up my roof one time and could not get down 😂 the guy that was with me had to coax me down ☺ GOD ELOHIM YAHWEH PLEASE BLESS AND KEEP YOU Reg💝☺
