SirLovesALott I’m sorry, as much as I would love the revival of Toyota the 86 is actually a Subaru and the Supra is actually a Z4. We’ve yet to see a pure Toyota sports car. I just don’t think Toyota has the same passion for sports cars as it once did. Though there’s no doubt the two cars are excellent drivers cars

Hey Doug this car was called the Sera Live Sound for a reason. Toyota designed it that way for the acoustic experience. It wasn't meant to be a hot hatch. It also wasn't associated with the MR2. It was built on the Cynos, Corsa and Starlet chassis. In America that chassis was used in the Toyota Tercel and Paseo. So mechanically, they have the same parts. The Starlet Gt engine can also be swapped into it or the engine internals (I think it's the pistons) and turbo system.
That's surprisingly cheap. My father had a 1991 Mazda 929, Mazda's attempt at an ultra-luxury saloon, it's sunroof had an inbuilt solar panel which trickle fed the car battery but primarily powered vents & exhaust fans to keep the cabin 'cool' when parked. Remember back in 1991 that was nuts. Anyhow there was a massive hailstorm with Hail up to the size of tennis balls, one piece happened to crack the sunroof. Luckily the car was comprehensively insured. The replacement cost for the solar powered sunroof ALONE was $9500, and that was in the 1990's... $9500...

Yep, on the head unit. But Doug doesn't actually research all that well - even though it's easy to find info on it (even Wikipedia gives it a mention, for the gods' sakes.) But I guess that's too much work.
Back when car companies sold base enthusiast models. Now all they have are a million different crossover SUV's and maybe one over priced over built top of the line performance car.
You didn't mention the massive piece of glass that is the rear hatch, with little to support it. Or that it was one of the first cars to have projector headlights. It was a super innovative car for its time and deserves a bit more credit.
Maybe him finally using passenger side to get into them has to do something with it. He is always going from left side so all so only in rhd car he will get in correctly....and usually passebger side has special levers for access and driver seats dont...so ots stupid for him to keep using driver side. Especially with toyotas. All of the have special two dual purpose latches one for people to get out and one on the side which foldes and moved the seat at once
I remember first discovering this car on Granturismo 4 for the PlayStation 2 as a very young car enthusiast. The way they modeled the door to be open in the butterfly fashion as opposed to shut like literally ever other car in the game captivated me. I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this video on my feed. Awesome little nostalgia trip there.
C'mon Doug!! Missed the trunk's ARW Subwoofer under the trunk lid, didn't address that the trunk lid cover has its own "hood prop" to keep it open (due to the weight of the boom box), the WARP button on the stereo that switches the "boom box" from Casual to Funky, the roadside Flare (red stick with its own holder on the passenger's side kick panel). I LOVE the Sera. I still remember the very first time I saw one, slinking out of an alley in Bangkok one night in the mid-90s. Felt like I was in a scene in Blade Runner.
The doors were probably an attempt at solving a parking problem. Streets in Japan are commonly very narrow. And instead of swing out doors that take more lateral space than gull wings. That's my opinion.
You can get in and out of some very tight spots that's for sure (great if you like to park away from other cars against a wall), but the doors should open to equal heights, this one must have just had bad or aftermarket struts on one side... hmm

Back in the 90s, I had a roommate who sold Toyotas. He once told me how he had a middle aged guy who came into the dealership to trade in his gen 2 Supra for a Solara for his daughter because she couldn't drive a manual and didn't want to learn.
He wasn't happy about it but his daughter was happy.
Looking back on it now I'm actually shedding tears.

Doug: The Toyota Sera is probably the weirdest and coolest Toyota of the 1990s.
Supra: Am I a joke to you?
Hey Doug this car was called the Sera Live Sound for a reason. Toyota designed it that way for the acoustic experience. It wasn't meant to be a hot hatch. It also wasn't associated with the MR2. It was built on the Cynos, Corsa and Starlet chassis. In America that chassis was used in the Toyota Tercel and Paseo. So mechanically, they have the same parts. The Starlet Gt engine can also be swapped into it or the engine internals (I think it's the pistons) and turbo system.

Curved glass price is $618 - $1050 USD, each side, depending on the colour of the glass.
Ok.
