I got a 1390 as a sophomore, but I was sick and messed up really bad in grammar and got a 640 R/W and 750 M, the took the SAT March of 10th grade and increase R/W to a 700. This year I am hoping to get the National Merit and I have been practicing for the November SAT and have gotten better at the English part so hopefully, I get it.

You can call admissions to validate your standardized test scores with the University, especially for prospective students. ACT can mail your score directly to your highschool, even overnight. Make sure your score is registered with your highschool over the phone if there is any discrepancy. The last step would be to call the University again and see if it is fixed.

The NMSC doesn’t give much info on the distinction between Finalist & Scholar, so here’s the difference: A Finalist becomes a Scholar only when they accept a National Merit Scholarship, which can be College-Sponsored, Corporate-Sponsored, the basic NMSC one, or a Special one. This can only be done if you’ve been offered one, and they will make it very clear if you have.
RIP, California's cutoff is like a 1470/1480, hope I get the money!! :) P.S. Several of my friends who scored a 1460 or 1470 missed the cutoff by 1 point last year.
There is no limit to the college-sponsored scholarships. Colleges can give whatever they want to the student, and the amount you get may depend on the state. For example, here at UF, we get $500 from the school, but the state passed a law that any NMF who named 1 of the 6 main state schools as their #1 gets a full ride (cost of attendance as given by the school). This used to only apply to in-state students, but as of this year has been expanded to all NMFs.
If choosing a dorm, it is better to have your father write the check for dorm occupancy than to wait for financial aid disbursements to clear. Keep the files on your OneDrive and you definitely need a Microsoft account. Also, any scholarship offer letters or award letters must be saved.

My PSAT increased from 1430 soph year to 1520 junior year. Yes it took a crazy amount of practice, but it's possible.
