That pulley you said was in the way of the right-side rear does not need to be removed. Depress the brake/clutch pedal and set the parking brake. This moves that pulley out of the way and let's you remove the engine bolt.
Also, a one foot length of pipe for leverage will make quick work to loosen those nasty little ninnycocks.
    That is all.

I used an impact. You can pull the spark plug and put rope down the hole like about 2 foot of 1/2 thick rope. When the piston hits the rope it will stop and the bolt can be removed from the pulley. Try leaving the pulley in place if you are switching engines. Get a friend to help you line up the shaft of the new engine with the pulley keyway. Good luck.

Thank you for the information. I was wondering about the pulley system removal before I got into ripping it apart.

So that pulley you removed to get to the fourth bolt will be moved out of the way if you apply and lock the brake.

I try to start it about once every 2 or 3 months and run for 10 minutes. I then turn off the fuel valve and let it burn off the carb gas. Then try to start it on choke with fuel turned off. And I don't but I should mix Stable with the fuel. And if it does not start when I need it I guess it is time for a carb cleaning.

How you take out the engine pulley?

    • @BigAlWillis
      @BigAlWillis 4 ปีที่แล้ว

usually just bolt & washer on bottom. if it's rusty you may need to use a puller tool.

Do you have another engine to put in it? I see a lot of the 12HP's floating around.

Glad u posted this, just what I was looking for. How did you remove the pulley
from the crank? Impact wrench or did you wedge something in the blade? I'm pulling mine and I need to pull the pulley from the bottom of the mower.

I have the same mower and same problem but I paid $140 with blown 15.5 hp
Can I remove the engine with the pulleys still attached??? (as it is sized on) Or is the frame hole not big enough to pull them out together?

The reason I asked is that it doesn't look like the pulley will fit through the opening to remove the engine from the frame. Its a lawn tractor. Also not sure why I would leave the pulley in place
since I need to put it on the new engine. BTW this will be my first engine swap. Thanks for your help.

A lot of usable parts, wheels, battery, starter, deck, transmission if it is good, front end, head valves etc. Carburetor maybe, that may have been the cause of the broken connecting rod due to the carburetor leaking gas into the crankcase thinning out the oil when engine was off. The extra oil was a good indicator of that, ( if gas order in oil, for sure).
That said if you need the parts $50.00 dollars was a steal. But to sell the parts you need space, time & plenty of patience to deal with the calls you will get from craigslist or whatever advertising you may do.
$50.00 was a generous offer, these tractors are for free all over and this tractor in running condition sells between $275.00 to maybe $450.00 if it is in pristine condition at the right time.
Plus no need to tell some to X?X. He made an offer that was good for him and it must have be ok for the seller, he sold it

Well a Master Degree is in No way nessasary to change out a 17hp engine. If ya have a moderate mechanical aptitude, and what I call COMMON SENSE This is an easy job. Outside of lifting the engine and finding a place to hold the engine upright. But I will say the tips are always worth hearing and seeing to make things easy and how to correct issue of difficulty. Thanks, I was hoping to see you actually removing engine bolts ( the process) that would have been nice seeing what tools were used and leverage angles.

He looked down the spark plug hole and saw the piston not moving so it needs a new crankshaft and connecting rod minimum. Not worth the cost and time.
