Seal Rescued from Packing Strap

- Packing straps can withhold immense pressure. Especially this small loop has turned into a death trap for marine animals, it has just the right size to slip over an animal's neck. Once caught in it, there is no escape for a seal without outside help from rescue teams like OCN. A seal's natural growth or movements cannot break the loop. Ironically, this particular type of packing strap is used to hold together boxes with bait. So either way, marine animals lose out - they get targeted by fishermen for consumption, or they get entangled in their rubbish!

I think that watching the training of new rescuers really shows us that technical skills, timing, and coordination of team members are needed to safely execute a successful rescue. What the OCN team does is not simple!

You can see the difference by the earlier videos, few tools, nets with problems, timings were very long. Now everybody has several tools. And the cutting hook on rods to untangle the huge sleepy bulls in the harbours.
I'm so glad others are taking up the challenge to rescue MORE seals, around the world.

I often wonder what the seals make of the rescues. Obviously they are terrified, but when the pain eases, or they find they can breathe properly again, and then their captors release them, they must be so confused.❤
Someone may be confused, but I think that there are those who then brag to their relatives about how they deceived the bipeds and cleverly ran away from them. 😁

It's great to see how quickly Chelsea and Dallas are learning. I had to give a little giggle that Dallas received a little on-the-job proper strap cutting scissor training after all of the snide comments Chelsea got for not knowing how to work them properly after they had unlocked on her in one of the previous videos.
There are so many things that we the viewers take for granted and never comment on about OCN's teamwork, but if one really pays attention, we can see how flawlessly (usually) their well-oiled machine is. Such as, Chelsea being told to hold the seal and how. She is on the seal, she gets to feel its' movements through her body... therefore, she needs to be the one in full control of its' head, too. If one of the other rescuers tried to hold its' head, the seal or Chelsea could be hurt if it suddenly tried to roll or buck if she were distracted trying to cut the entanglement. Everyone has a job to do, and most of the time they all are doing many at the same time. It's a lot to learn but they are learning from the best. Thanks again OCN team for sharing your vast knowledge and helping save the planet when so many of us are unable to.

Another great rescue but I've noticed how quick Chelsea & Dallas are to take off their gloves once a seal is caught in the net; as a safety officer, constantly risk assessing situations, to remove your gloves at the point where you're handling a seal in such close proximity, this is the time where the extra protection those gloves give can save you from a nasty bite wound to a learning experience that handling wild animals isn't always predictable. Especially now there have been rabies cases found in seals, keep those gloves on until you REALLY have to remove them to remove a fine entanglement that's deep in a wound 🙏🏻 No one wants to see you injured by a seal, limiting the work you can do rescuing them. Animal lovers everywhere put the safety of animals above themselves but if you are hurt or injured, you can't help the same number of animals as you otherwise would, especially if the team have to call it a day to get you medical treatment. You're doing a fantastic job, but safety first ❤
