Mother Humpback Stays by Calf While Rescuers Free it From Shark Net

  • A mother humpback whale remained by its offspring’s side as rescuers freed the calf’s tail which had been entangled in a shark net. Using specialised cutting equipment, workers from Sea World Australia, Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol worked together to free the four-metre calf who was trapped off the coast of Coolangatta Beach.
    A spokesman for the fisheries told ABC the mother had “pushed into the nets slightly to help keep the calf up on the surface.”
    After workers cut away the mesh, the pair swam away to the South Pacific Ocean in good condition.
    The incident has reignited debates over shark nets used by state governments as a preventative measure.

      Whales have sonar, i.e. they make a great variety of clicking sounds at a wide variety of frequencies, to tell them what's around them. Perhaps nets in the water should contain some large plastic or wooden blobs which reflect these sonar pulses, so that the whales would be able to "see" (via sonar) the blobs and they would know that there was an obstacle. Probably the thin nylon fibres of the nets are invisible to the whales. If net manufacturers used these plastic balls visible to whales, the whales would stay away and the nets would not be damaged. Everybody would benefit.

      It is illegal internationally to hunt whales, even in the only 3 nations left that do it (Iceland, Norway and Japan) they restrict their hunting to non endangered species and do so in a controlled manner with peerless government oversight and permits required todo so. Every catch is regulated to ensure they are not over hunted.
      There are no nations on Earth that stil hunt or kill whales like this and there are severe punishments for those that do so illegally, even in places like Russia, only the people living in the far east do so and they have a yearly limit to how much they can catch and do so ONLY for sustinance - not for commercial practice..

      Actually they are far more aware of the "upper half" of their world, inclukding us, than people realize. There's repeated occurences of whales and orcas specifically asking for help from us, mostly from injuries done to them BY people. Such asm pulling out arrows & spears, Patching up injuries from bullets, props and what have you.. Also when they can't get out of a situation which would reuire the dexterety of arms like the nets..they know who to call. A lot of the times the people don't "get it" though, misunderstanding the animals behaviors as playfullness or some such other, until someone notices the seriousness of the rrequest. Animal communication isk what we, as a specis must master..

How about avoiding having to help others by not going out of your way into _someone else's_ house and hanging up shark nets because you dont like certain of _their_ family members! Go into someone else's space, knowing you may get eaten. That's having heavy enough balls to take responsibility. Hanging nets up represents every mistake humans are making.

      Needless to say I don't agree. I don't care for this "fuck the environment" or "to hell with animals" approach that some people have. I think we as humans need to make an effort to work with the environment and avoid doing harmful things (such as putting up these nets). I'm no vegan. I have no issues with people eating meat (as long as the animal is not an endangered species that is). We are omnivores afterall and we need meat for a properly balanced diet. However, I don't like when people do things that are for more selfish reasons such as wearing fur. And I do view the nets as selfish. You're in the water for recreational purposes. You don't NEED to be there. And do remember that it's not just sharks getting killed by these nets. Sorry for the long rant, just trying to let you see things from my point of view. I know you probably disagree, but ah well...

    • @kageroux1193
      @kageroux1193 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't say you did. I said I was against that general attitude that some people have. Maybe you have that attitude, maybe you don't. And I already did point out that I had no issue with people eating meat. However, there is a difference between doing things that are necessary and doing things that are unnecessary and downright destructive. But you are now simply throwing out ad hominem attacks and it's clear there is no discussing things with you.

    • @kageroux1193
      @kageroux1193 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can totally understand that. I've known people like that too and it is really obnoxious. It's totally fine if they want to avoid eating meat. I've got no issues with that. But they shouldn't be trying to dictate to other people what they can put in their bodies for nutrition. Like I said, we're omnivores so meat is supposed to be part of our diet. It's perfectly natural. I only have issues if people are eating rare (almost extinct) animals. That I think it really irresponsible. But I doubt you go around doing that. lol.

      You're asking a gawd who does nothing, to bless the ones he is watching suffer? Your gawd is currently watching children being raped. How is your gawd blessing them? How is your gawd blessing these whales? By watching men pollute their homes? By watching men slaughter them? Does your gawd not have the power or the will to do anything demonstrable? What is your gawd doing to stop cancer? Why did he invent cancer, satan, and pedophilia? Didn't he create us in his own image? Didn't he know what he created and what would happen?
      Why is it okay for Jesus to say, "strike her children dead"? Revelations 2:23

    • @reikomyles1495

      @ because of man's CHOICE to disobey Jesus, we suffer the penalty of sin, which is death. Here on earth we have laws of the land. We break the law we go to jail and in many cases suffer the death penalty. If you had a child and you tell him not to touch the fire on the stove, and he disobeys and touches the fire, you know what's next. He gets burn. With a disobedient sinful heart, comes an array of terrible things that fall upon us. Nonetheless, there is hope. Jesus came down to this world and lived, loved, healed, taught, suffered and died for the sins of man. If we would just open our hearts to Him and choose to love and serve Him, this world would be a better place.

    these nets kill more fish than save humans how many times has this happened and no one has been around...if your scared of sharks dont go into the ocean its pretty sad we are more worried about swimming in the ocean for fun than the well being of all the life that lives in the ocean...this is one reason why i will never go there who ever came up with this idea for the country should be fired....

      and why would they put the net that far out no one is going to be swimming out there if your going to put one out it only needs to be like 100ft out from the beach and big whales like this dont come that close to shore so there wouldnt be as big of a problem
