A few inconsequential corrections to the early history -- I made SRBXmas (the SRB2 TGF re-skin), and Sonikku actually met me prior to us working with Stealth. The 'vanilla' SRB2-TGF was not released until many years later -- it was never intended as a public release in the state it was in.
Because my family was a little too poor to afford the latest and greatest consoles, I stuck with "free" PC games for most of my early childhood... and because of that I got to watch this beautiful piece of artistic expression grow up alongside me. I probably would not be as into video games as I am right now if it wasn't for projects like this showing me creativity isn't dead, it just goes wherever it's most comfortable.
I remember starting with 1.04-1.09 and had no idea this game was still getting updated. Game looks totally different now. Really good video, I wanted to see all the changes over the years. Take my +1's.
In my opinion, this is what i call a masterpiece of a videogame that is just so much fun, i speedran it 8 times and it's still always nice to play again on boredom, and i think videos like this really pay tribute to its history, this is great
This game was my childhood man. I remember getting on the computer and looking for wad files for the game, having vivid and vast memories of the online multiplayer with mods and figuring out how to get itemplace was the best feeling, I miss those times
It's comforting to me that no matter how many times the main series continues to disappoint, we still got games like P-06 and SRB2 to provide the Sonic Experiences we deserve.
I appreciate the work you put into this video! I got hooked on SRB2 back in 2010, so this was a nostalgia trip man. The history of this game goes so deep, especially when you get into the modding community and the OLDC, which was so fun to participate in. This game will always have a special place in my heart ❤️
This video needs more views and you need more subs. I wasn't there at SRB2's start but I was around when the SRB2Net Launcher was the only way I knew how to add wads so this was a nostalgia over load
thank you for this video. i also started playing SRB2 around 2009, and this game pretty much was my childhood (it was also THE first game i've ever played, matter of fact). so watching a video like this doing it such great service was a treat
I started playing SRB2 back in 2007 -- I still have my hundreds of mods, level packs and custom characters for every version of SRB2 that's released since 1.09.4. This is my favorite 3D Sonic game, and one of my favorite games! And this video has been a fun watch so far!
Don't know how I could've gone this long without knowing about this amazing project. Thankyou for creating an incredibly in-depth chronicle of this game's development. I'm really interested to learn more about the content that the community of fans have developed as well.
It was really refreshing to see how much this fan beloved evolved along the years. I found out about srb2 when it got only 2 zones, the Greenflower and the first act of the purple liquid level. After that i couldn't stop playing, was always checking for new content and mods... and now it is really nice seeing how far this game went.
I first played SRB2 during the "Final" demo days. Amazing just how far this game has come, possibly my favorite sonic game of all time. Can't wait for the day it's finally completed.
I started playing SRB2 in 2013 with version 2.0. At the time, I was using a Macbook and STjr didn’t update the Mac port as much as the Windows version so I was left out on the latest features and the multiplayer stuff. I found a patch one day that upgrade the .app to a newer version but it still didn’t have multiplayer available. Regardless, I sticked with this game for my whole childhood. I had SOOO much fun with it then, and I still do now since revisiting it in late 2020. I got stuck on the old Castle Eggman stage a lot, but I had a fun time running around. v2.2 overhauled the game in its entirety and I’m so glad that after all these years, STjr is still at it.
I remember just stumbling into yt videos about the game and was completely blown away by how cool the game looked, i even mistaked it for being a real sonic game by sega at one point. Years later i got a phone and after sometime of using it, i decided to install it on my phone (android specifically) and instantly falling in love with it, even thought not having any expirence playing it before, i had a bit of trouble on how to control it. But i got used to it. I got all emeralds, got a whole bunch of addons and Lua files downloaded. What a glow up.
I have been playing this game for some time now (and i am still stuck in red volcano or whatever the zone is called lol) but never would i have guessed it is 25 years old from beginning to end. What a story. Great video explaining everything it was a joy to watch :)
Playing since 2006 and can say this is not a game. This is an art that made by people who loves their stuff. This is an art that made people with passion. This is the best proof that shows what "real" fans can do to improve their loved game series. Good work!👍👍👍❤❤
I just discovered the kart racer mod, you can say the same about that one, I just wish it had more good single player. It's still fun just going through the tracks. I wish more developers would use the doom engine, it just feels and looks great. I prefer a doom mods over an unreal 5 game anyday. Actually now that I think about it, they should probably just crap out money grabs, they would have to bring on some passionate experienced modders, give them the funding to allows them to create. If I was rich I would throw money at these creators and let them go wild, imagine if they could quit their jobs and fully commit.
50:55 Act 2 literally contains the level layout from the 1.09.4 version, as you enter a room with a giant pool in the middle with four sections leading out. (Though one is boarded off, so there's three.) Two of those sections (the left ones) even appear to be loosely based on their 1.09.4 counterparts.
I've played the SRB2 , and I think it's good, but it really has a problem in the physics. Very slippery and the player stops too slowly, and the jump height isn't really high enough. The wiki states that the thok will be replaced or and the physics will be significantly reworked, which would be a godsend. Red Volcano was absolute hell to play mostly because of the physics, and the rework could make the physics much better. About the zones, I thought Greenflower was really good and also had great background music I also really liked Castle Eggman Zone and its aesthetics, but the boss was very difficult. I got stuck on Arid Canyon Act 2 (the minecart section) and tried it like 40 times before getting through it, then I got to Red Volcano which was, as I said, extremely hard mostly due to the physics (I'm just glad it's just a single act long)... I'm currently up to Egg Rock Zone and taking a break from playing the game.
Great video. I've still got the June 2003 demo on my PC , which is the last version I put any real time into. My first 3D Sonic game! Always struggled with the physics though.
Get the new one, it makes things a lot better. It has a lock on button now, you can toggle it hold it. Lots of control options. I thought I would be tired of it, but it feels new again. The doom modding scene is the best gaming has to offer. Still massive to this day and growing. Nothing is more comfy than finding a new total conversation mod you like.
I remember playing this in 2007. I actually still have the files - sure enough its final demo 1.09.4. Even back then I thought it was amazing, and now it looks completely different and you'd probably need to be mad to not call this the best 3D sonic game.

A level made to be as unfair as possible to sonic. You can enter the secret level in the level emerald coast through a secret spring behind a fence
Even if I started playing this game in mid-late 2010s I find it to be my favorite game of all time, this due to the release of 2.2 which was hyping as FUCK, my fav yter at the time played it and as a result I did too, came back to play this gem after not touching it for some time and I absolutely loved it, so SO much I went into the multiplayer and discovered the mods, which, had done it for me, they made me an addict...But in a good way. Since then I've been playing the different mod packs (stages and characters) I could find and have a (robo) blast with them (this has to be the only game where you can play as fucking KIRYU AND SONIC). Add to this that it's in this version that my sister and I began playing actively. I just can't put into words how much fun and joy this game gives me, I've replayed it a thousand times already and I feel like I'll never get tired of it. Interesting. I’m kind of curious why they chose the engine they did instead of say…Doomsday Engine. I honestly didn’t realize it was still in development. Good job, Mix! I enjoyed it. You talkative bastard.
*Short Answer:* The Doomsday Engine didn't exist yet. *Long Answer:* Back in November 1998, SSNTails-a fan of SRB1, and the creator of a Doom wad titled "Sonic Doom"-reached out to Sonikku and pitched the idea of turning SRB2 into a 3D fan game. He showed him the sequel wad he had been working on at the time, "Sonic Doom 2: Bots on Mobius," slated for release in December. Sonikku evidently liked what he saw, because he scrapped the TGF engine, as well as a custom C-based engine Stealth had been working on, and began collaborating with SSNTails instead. Thus, Sonic Doom 2, or SD2, essentially became the substrate of SRB2's early development. It was a promising start, but in order to make a proper third-person 3D platformer that could stand on its own two legs, SRB2 would need to be capable of feats not possible in vanilla Doom or SD2. ZDoom was, by all accounts, the very best Doom source port at that time, and from a technical standpoint it absolutely spanked its predecessor, DOSDoom. Unfortunately, it lacked several key features SSNTails needed to fully realize Sonikku's vision for SRB2. So ZDoom was out. As for the Doomsday Engine, that was only a pet project of community developer Skyjake at the time. He would eventually show it off to the world with the release of jHexen in November 1999, but he wouldn't release the source code until the following year. Plus, not having the benefit of hindsight, Sonikku and SSNTails wanted a demo out by Halloween. So Doomsday wasn't going to happen either. Fortunately, there was exactly one Doom source port at that time which did have the features those two needed (namely: mouselook, chasecam, FOFs, water blocks, and 32-player netplay): the Doom Legacy engine. So, after 45 days of intense development, on October 31, 1999, Sonikku and SSNTails released the first ever public demo of SRB2 running on a modified Doom Legacy engine v1.28. The rest, they say, is history.

56:11 I Feel they shouldn't have went that route cause like what is the point of being Sonic anymore? like he is known as the fastest thing alive in the Sonic series he should have a higher base running speed then the others cause that just makes sense I mean like they can literally fly and shit they don't need to have the same running speed but that is my opinion I don't like them all having the same base running speed it makes no sense Tails is literally the easy mode of the game Knuckles is like the Medium mode while Sonic is literally the hardest guy to play with because of the fact he can't just fly over shit like the other two can but again my opinion I just do not like that change they could have done it better instead of "Everyone can basically run as fast as Sonic and can fly which means there is really no point playing as him unless you want a challenge"
Am I the only one that thinks egg rock and race with metal sonic is easy? Cause I beat eggrock and the race so many times. I've got alot better at the game. Before I was a complete noob but now I changed as a pro. Probably because I played the game for so flippin long. And I beat Egg Sattelite in 1 attempt. It's all in the name of Practice.
SRB2 is just as hard as any other game (which means piss easy unless you're going for a speedrun or some other challenge run) once you get familiar to the unconventional controls and physics, which are the only reason of why this game has such a steep learning curve.

Yeah it's very interesting story of srb2

Am I the only one that thinks egg rock and race with metal sonic is easy? Cause I beat eggrock and the race so many times. I've got alot better at the game. Before I was a complete noob but now I changed as a pro. Probably because I played the game for so flippin long. And I beat Egg Sattelite in 1 attempt. It's all in the name of Practice.
SRB2 is just as hard as any other game (which means piss easy unless you're going for a speedrun or some other challenge run) once you get familiar to the unconventional controls and physics, which are the only reason of why this game has such a steep learning curve.
Now we have the febuary 2000 release :/
