Grant is awesome, but none of his normals are special cancelable. All of his toolkit is reliant on links and big single hits that lead into larger damage opportunities.
@@yeetkunedo Personally, even SF3 combos are hellish for me, since I come from Tekken with its pussy-ass juggles and I never learned anyone harder than Paul there. I can't even begin to imagine how excruciating the link system will be to me.
It's actually pretty impressive on SNK's part that Garou's boss characters (Grant & Kain), while still (very) strong remain *_competitively legal_* when you take into account their history of cheap, broken bosses.
The charge moves are basically normal motion inputs by how lenient they are, the one thing they fuck over is doing a Guard Cancel into them, which is a serious weakness Kain has always had at the highest level.
6:20 Actually, this is because even the older Fatal Fury games had a mechanic where, during proximity guard (I.E you didn't block the normal yet but your character is still stuck in place guarding themselves), you could press 6A to momentarily remove your upper hurtbox just like a Guilty Gear 6P but without covering active frames. This pretty much solidifies this and the much simpler 2AB method the later games went for as a counterpoke rather than an anti air, something you use to hit during the recovery of the other person's move. Sorry for the nerd rant. Kevin is the only cool cop. Bingo!
I just wanna add that in the Xbox 360 version of garou, which got rollback iirc, to use grant or kain you just move the cursor off the screen to the right past the on screen fighters, it cycles back around after the two
The PlayStation versions also got rollback, including the PS Vita version, since it was implemented before its support got gutted. Shame that Guilty Gear didn't jump on that train until after that point, which may explain why its PS4 releases of Xrd didn't get patched, to preserve PS3 cross-play.
If you’re on Fightcade, it’s Kain: Hover character select on Jae Hoon, then hold the start button, then move the stick in this sequence - ↓ ↓ ↑ ↑ ↓ ↑ - then press a button after the portrait changes. Grant: same exact process, except hover on Dong Hwan, and reverse the stick input directions - ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ↑ ↓.
As someone who has never touched _Garou_ as yet, it's amusing to note how three of top four seem to have (really obnoxious) dive kicks but the potentially strongest character of Kevin Rian doesn't. Huh.
Kain doesn't have a dive kick. Garou has a ton of dive kicks in general, actually. Grant, Jenet, Hotaru, Dong (also has a super dive kick), Jae (with follow-ups!), and sorta Gato (out of his command jump stance). None of the low-tier chars have dive kicks, so there certainly is divekick privelage.
@@jimbo5266 Huh. I wonder what that weird looking downward aerial kick of Kain's is then. Just a privileged-looking air nomal? Either way, noted. The least surprising thing to learn is that the lower tier characters all lack dive kicks. Funny to realize that includes Rock and, presumably, even Terry.
@@MusicoftheDamned really late but to anwser your question, the downward energy kick Kain has is his aerial heavy kick, juat like Bison he has special energy looking heavies
Also because of how lenient the input system is for this game, Kain can preform all of his back charge specials after a partial dash which means that he doesn't need to give up space when throwing fireballs and he can extend the range on his rush punch.
With the top 5 (Gato) I actually think these are all the most interesting characters in the game. To me, with another iteration of the game, raising the utility of everyone to those standards could've made this game even cooler. I know people hate how strong Kevin is, but it's just crazy all the things he has in his kit and how freeform he is. Can't wait to see him in COTW.
Found you randomly talking about Jojo's broken top two. I think you've become a go to for fighting game broken fun facts. Keep it up, man. Your vids are a lot of fun. Whether to learn something new or relive old nightmares.
Kain is so cool, some of his ideas in terms of gameplay would be used for Ash in Kof, the fireball super, high execution demand (even more of a requirement with Ash) and having an entry barrier. Also, I would like you to do a video on Ash Crimson as a character like competitive history or something
One thing I like about Garou which is a weird thing to say now is how responsive and functional all the characters are. Every character feels at first glance that they can do work when you try them out for the first time. I mean take a look at SF4 and see just how many characters outright sucked.
That’s my favorite thing about Garou. Until you hit a level where brake cancels become part of your standard toolkit, the cast is pretty damn functional across the board, provided you make the right reads. Once you cross the brake cancel combo threshold, the tier lines become very, very real.
You fundamentally misunderstand Grant. He is not the easy button character. His game plan is simple and focused on scoring comboable counterhits using a few of his more threatening specials, but since none of his normals are cancelable into special or super, you have to rely upon raw timing links or mixups to open the opponent up. What he excels at is clapping opponents for overextending themselves, but this is also his Achilles’ heel, as many of his specials aren’t as safe as they seem. His 236D is his only true safe special, and if it’s JD’d due to the Grant player becoming predictable, he’s gonna get his face erased off of a guard cancel. Both Kevin and Jenet are better than Grant, it’s just that Grant hits harder for less effort, provided that the Grant player is equal parts patient and attentive. He is a scrub killer, through and through.
@@ramijackson3978 Yeah. I play Grant. I also main Dong, Gato, Butt, Terry and Jenet, and sub Hoku, Kain, Jae, Rock, Freeman and Tizoc. The only character I don’t really fuck with all that much is Kevin, and that’s because that sonbitch is literally broken and should be banned.
14:43 "Jenet boasts very strong defense as well". Then 15:58 "One thing you never want to see on a character: low defense". Yeah, makes sense. In all seriousness, I get what you meant by those (defensive game and defense rate respectively) but it's just funny to see these 2 lines a minute and 15 seconds apart from each other. Also, I gotta assume that the logic of the defense rates in this game, on top of general gameplay balance, was: massively buff dudes having high defense rates (95% for Grant and Tizoc), slim girls and small teenage boy having low defense rates (110% for B. Jenet, Hotaru and Hokutomaru) and generally muscular dudes having in-between defense rates (100% for every other characters).

Hokutomaru and Rock for example, feel like they're quite balanced with their move set until you realize that Rock has poor damage conversions and nothing particularly oppressive about his pressure.
