Best Compact Phone 2023? | Sony Xperia 5 V Unboxing & Review
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ส.ค. 2024
- Reviewing the Sony Xperia 5 V, with a full camera test, gaming on Genshin Impact, battery life and beyond. Plus an unboxing, which takes all of two seconds. The Sony Xperia 5 V is a mini version of the flagship phone and one of the best compact UK handsets of 2023 - but the £850 price ain't cheap!
First up, that camera tech has switched to a dual lens setup. Sony has scrapped the dedicated telephoto shooter, but you do get the same Exmor-T hardware as the flagship for the Xperia 5 V primary cam. Along with Photo Pro, you can capture natural looking pics any time of day, with full DSLR controls.
The Sony Xperia 5 V also boasts excellent battery life, along with dependable performance. I did see some networking lag when on mobile data and some juddering when shooting 4K video with the camera, but these appear to be software issues.
If you're after a mini phone in 2023, this offers a similar experience to the 1 V. Creators and gamers have a lot to enjoy here, as well as anyone who streams a lot of music and movies.
So are you tempted by the Sony Xperia 5 V? Let us know what you think below and check out my unboxing and review of the best phones of 2023 on Tech Spurt!

Iphone noob...
Uncle spurt, are you going to do a review on the mate 50 pro?
J'espère que tu perds ta chaîne
I noticed internet connection problems with Moto G neo and Pocco
@@Honeykosare with poco/xiaomi it's something common, instead of helping the updates bring a bunch of new bugs (had a redmi note 11s d had a bunch of problems) sold it and got a galaxy a53 5g and was happy, till I got the chance to get my current device, huawei mate 40 pro and I'm really happy with it
Definitely Sony took the right way with this camera setup. Personally I'm so tired with oversized bumps with numerous useless cameras on them
Finally someone that thinks like me. I actually wished we go back to phones without camera bumps.
Personally like the iphone XR, iphone SE and the pixel 4a because of the camera design and the size of the phone
I think any device that is over $500 should offer 4 android updates guarantee .
I 100% agree. But at least the bootloader is unlockable so we will at least be able to install custom roms in the future on these phones
Then only Iphone and samsung galaxy, of course the latest... they last longer, a lot longer, than other brands.
@@Mr.Feanor yes before the 4th of October that was true. Google is now the leading company at the software support front. They just announced 7 years for the pixel 8 series. And the sony phones were launched with 2 years only because they don't have the resources to keep the phones updated for longer. That is why they have their Open Xperia program where they help custom rom devs to create new Roms by providing official device configs.
@@antonbackdahl5172 Yep, saw the news, very nice.
@@antonbackdahl5172Exactly. Updates dont matter with unlockable bootloader
i see ppl complaining on the wrong things,
i rather get this with 130 hours of battery and camera that captures accurate colors.
plus this thing has an SD card slot and a Aux port, i mean where else will you find a flagship phone with an extended memory and an axillary port?
Xperias are good for their manual camera controls, microSDXC expansion slot and a headphone jack making it a media powerhouse. The software is very clean and Sony is pretty decent with software updates in terms of timeliness but not much on longevity... at least Sony gives me a music player unlike Google. I bought the Xepria 5 III used to give it a go and it was quite nice and, in some ways, better than my Pixel 6 Pro and now Pixel 7. Battery life is king on the 5 series.
Not to mention that side unlock scanner is deadly efficient and alot faster than the front digital scanner on the lower ½ of the screen 99% of Android phones seem to have adopted.
A lot of people forget the battery care tech from qnovo that Sony uses.
The battery life stays good for much longer compared to Samsung or Apple devices.
Imo the 5v doesn't have enough storage and if it's possible just need longer security update support.
Android versions don't matter.
Best comment, nailed it
Sony's camera interface is the most visually beautiful of them all
Tu te moques de moi en ce moment

this was the review ive waited for thanks
KYAAHHH! Finally a Sony Xperia 5 V in Tech Spurt studio! Can't wait for the review! ❤
Agree this is so much better than an iPhone. Longer battery Nicer Speaker and Good Camera OS smooth too. Not much of overheating yet nice to hold.

@@EmmieSuksaiNo overheat issue since XZ1. Who says it lies. Defenetely.
@@kujtimzymeri3358yeah, there's no overheat issue since sd835 but I heard snapdragon 8 series have problem with heating 🤔
@@tonyvercetti8056 maybe. I hope not again.
@@tonyvercetti8056 apparently 8 gen 1 devices were struggling and almost all the reviews I looked at reported heat (especially in unusually high loads such as benchmarks) but I always try to envision a devices performance in ~5 years in the future. so when apps demand almost 100% of the power, how hot/performant will the device be even with a fresh battery? (looking at you, iphone mini series ...)
Which is why I personally waited for reviews on the xperia V series and so far only recent updates seem to partly make heat an issue which I hope gets resolved soon as I planned to buy one to replace my >7 year old oneplus phone and to keep using the sony for even longer!
I'm a bif fan of Sony but my Xperia 1 mk3 is now just two years old and I haven't had a security update since July!
Sony have confirmed no more security updates and it won't get Androd 14. It's just a shame that you pay £1200 and after two years it is no longer supported. I've just bought an S23+ Five years of updates at least!
Sony need to do better!!!
For a company that does so many things remarkably well and with such polish, they skimp on so many surprising things.
just a brilliant screen setup without any notch or hole. no other brand offers this best display experience. also the phone is very handy. all features are awesome to me. thanks sony
I had a Xperia Pro, i just changed it for a 1V and i am super happy. For me is a perfect phone
Which pro? Xperia pro-i? I wanted to switch to xperia 1 v but it's only 256 gb in UK would have preferred 512 gb
@@arzsas56Go buy Online. HK Variant has 512GB
@@arzsas56 what are the advantages of having the 512 gb version over adding a 256 gb (or higher) SD card
How much did u pay to upgrade?
@@infinitegadget8137 The price difference in Canadian Dollars to upgrade from 256 GB to 512 GB is only $50 (equivalent to $37 USD)
I was already more impressed than the price. The lightness of this device is amazing. headphone jack, microSD, 4K display, no dynamic island, audio, camera, video. I'm satisfied with everything.
How is 183 grams light? My LG V30 is 158 grams and it is barely pocketable at that heavy weight.
Worth mentioning that Sony also offers battery care by limiting charge to 90 or 80% to mitigate battery degradation over the years.
Samsung offers that from 2015
Yeah, why should I wait for battery deterioration to limit my battery life if I can do it out of the box!
thanks for the review. think i might get the 5 IV though
Great to have a wicked sense of humour imbricated with a product review. Ty.
Im just loving the clean look at the back.

Great video thank you, by the way, any idea where I can buy some punds?
I guarantee it, give it a year or two and EVERY flagship or even midrange phone will have as much stuff in there boxes as this phone does
Soon they will just sell you a phone without a box, wrapped in rag paper saying "f you". Gotta eat zem bugs n corn to save the planet too.
I've owned many Xperia phones and I am watching this with My Xperia V. They all overheat, slowdown and camera shuts down prematurely. I think I'm going Pixel 8 pro this time. Thanks for the awesome reviews, I'm a fan 😊
Asus comes closer to Xperia, except the USB-C is slow.
I have a IV and it's been the worst phone I've ever owned.
30 seconds into the video and I immediately subscribed 😂
Love your reviews. But can you also include link to your wallpaper (used in the phone?? 😊
sooo love it ☺️
My last Sony phone was an xperia xz. First was a z3 compact which was the my very first android phone and i miss it dearly. Currently I'm running an S22 ultra but I'm thinking of returning to my roots in 3 or so years. Any hope of sony still being alive by then and offering long term support?
honestly Sony is also the best phone when we are talking about the camera but the price is to expensive. that is the reason why many people dont want to buy sony instead people are interested to buy cheap phone with a good camera.
where did u get this wallpapers... i am lovin it
Sony works out to be £283 per year of support (3) compared to iPhone 15 at £89 per year (9) and Samsung S23 at £170 per year of support (5)
Not "compact" enough for me to buy it. Especially at that price with the big bezels, no LPTO display, little software support. I don't see why anyone would buy it over the other 6.1" phones it's competing against tbh, like the iPhone 15, S23 or Pixel 8. Personally, being a real "compact" phone would be enough of a point of differentiation for me to overlook a lot of compromises, but these dimensions are not that.
I agree with the no LTPO display part but Id take the tiny symmetrical bezel with front facing speaker any day.
You forgot Zenfone 10
S24/pixel use exynos SoC so far some of us that rules them out.
😯i got goosebumps when i heard a crimson colour. purple mixed with pink. issssss crimson. it sounds so cool
I like that box. Compact, minimalistic and less wasted cardboard
I like your honest seeming reviews and mostly how you speak. Thanks for teaching me so much British slang, I really appreciate it lol. But complicated the pro apps are not. Don't use your voice for the branch of Sony that only wants to maximize profit and poops on amateurs wanting to become pros on a very tight budget. Other than that good video, keep it up and nice pictures! Your cat reminds me of Spot. R.I.P
how is the stock camera app on this phone? As most people just test the photo app and not everyone knows how to adjust the settings.
Nice video
The only reason I'm not buying it - cause I needed a phone couple months back, and got 1mk5 instead. Except for couple bugs - it's decent, and it does not drive me nuts when my headphones die suddenly.
Chris do you need a circumcised phone case for this model.
Out of curiosity, I assume that you mentioned before in other videos, but where do you find all those wallpapers? they look dope!
I love Sony's music player on here I just wish they had built in files and gallery apps that aren't google.
the screen is the same size of the 5 iv right? and the size of the phone is the same? then the bezzles look only bigger because of the flat sides but are not bigger in reality or am i wrong?
1 mk V & 5 mk V are a banger, I'd get them as soon as their price depreciate in a couple year....in the meantime I'm still enjoying my Xperia 1 Mk ii
not 'depreciate' but be EOL. you would only get a year of security updates
@@simongrushka983 got 3 year of security updates on my 1 mk ii. Problem is the OS update, Sony only offer 2 but their device alway come with previous OS instead of the latest one....

Hello can i ask if the front camera and ultrawide has autofocus??
Hi, cal you help me plz ?
I can't find the shortcut icon for disabling/enabling mobile data... You know, the buttons when you swipe down. I've never had a Sony smartphone. Don't they exist on Sony phones ?
Great video, very beautiful. I'm a big fan of you+👍🔔
Sony listened to MKBHD about dumbing down their device to make them more approachable. They've done it - reduced the number of cameras and skimped on materials, bezels and screen quality but retained the price on the count of the still unproven Exmor sensor and 8gen2. Give me xperia 5 IV fan edition (in my heart - a version with 8+1 gn 1 and no effin ghost touch issues)
i thought it was funny that when MKBHD mentioned this, it was as if he never heard of the Xperia series 5 or series 10 which offer what he was asking for.
can you drop a link of wallpaper you use on every phone you review I think that would be nice
I can already find refurbished Samsung Galaxy S23's for ~500-550€ here. Best value for money and compact.
I agree s23 is a pretty good phone from the reviews i seen
@n.imanthadesilva9700Et puis ils ont un nouvel iPhone cassé 🔥💥
I got one brand new on contract this week for around that price
I'm so tempted to get one of these. It has the perfect hardware for me; SD card slot, headphone jack, no hole punches or notches, good battery life. But the lack of software support is what makes me want to stick with Pixel. But when I do upgrade I will really miss the headphone jack on my 4a..
Looks good. 3.5mm headphone socket, sd card slot, support for aptx lossless... You pay more for other devices which don't even touch Sonys audio quality. Pixel is out for me because of Google's lack of interest in any sort of decent audio quality. Samsung is more expensive and doesn't give the features I use or want.
Shame Sony don't just make the nwa306 into a smaller phone with the top audio.
Bought one to replace my Xperia 5II and straight out of the box the 5V feels less quality. I thought I'm going to get a upgraded version of 5II considering 5III and 5 IV are in between, but the only thing noticeable that was upgraded is the battery all else is same or less quality. Speakers are buzzing at hi volume, one less camera and the small LED on top of the display is gone! Also 2 days after I ordered the 5V , the old phone 5II developed a green line on the display after 3 years of use and it looks like 5V has the same display! Will just return the phone and hope Sony stop cutting on the quality, same was between XZ3 I had before 5II, display of XZ3 is still working and has much nicer image than 5ii or 5V. One lost customer.
I reallyyyyy wanna know where you get those awesome wallpapers from
Amazing phone. Please release in North America!
Sony Xperia forever! ♥️💯
oeyy uncle Spurt comes through at last XD
Can't decide between that Xperia 5 and iPhone 15 base model. The main issue for me is short software support from Sony.
Go with the iPhone 15
iPhone 15, obviously.
iPhone 15
a phone with a headphone jack and MicroSD card vs. an Iphone?
that's like deciding between a family van and a motorcycle
I currently use an Iphone 15 Pro Max and can confirm the new models are solid.
Hello thank you.really I loved I love Sony.
When you stop getting Android updates, it does not mean that your apps stop working or your phone is obsolete. I have a four a half year old Samsung S10 stuck at Android 12 and I haven't found an application that asks me to upgrade my OS.
How is battery timing someone suggested me about battery timing for playing games videos movies ?
I'm really looking forward to the 5v and are 90% sure I'll order one myself. But i must say that this surprisingly amount of negative comments makes me a bit more hesitant.
A lot people here seem really ignorant and biased against the Xperia despite not having done any research on its features
@marasion0862 no, I've owned all xperia phones and this phone is a waste of money
@@RodolphosTechchannel oh 😔
@RodolphosTechchannel How is it a waste of money? Because it lacks a telephoto lens? Not everyone wants/needs a wide zoom range. Certainly for some people, a cropped 2x - 2.5x zoom from the main lens is sufficient
Confirmation bias is a hell of a drug. Trust your own independent thoughts amd research. If the phone fits your needs and you're willing to live with the tradeoffs, buy it. If your region has a good return policy, baby it and then return it if you don't like it.
If you're here on the internet wanting others to confirm your choice, you'll never own another phone.
What have you against the 10 series? The 10 V is a beast of a phone and why you haven't reviewed it it's beyond me. It's a far better offering then the 5 V. I've been a fan of yours for years but your beginning to look like a Mr whose the boss with your flagship only reviews.
So is the Xperia 5V battery life way better than the Zenfone 10?
It's certainly a close call, both punch above their weight given their size. And put the iPhone 15 Pro Max to shame...
You should look for the Unihertz Jelly Star, extremely compact
I am Using Xperia 1 Mark 4 ...Still pretty new no issues ...may be not for another 5 years ....

Sides bezels are way too big... they should have look to the Phone 2 to get inspired since it also has flat screen 🤷
Nice review, Uncle Spurt. I wish they hadn't dropped the telephoto. Otherwise, i would have picked one up. Let's see what Sony does next year with more refinement on the new main camera...might have to get a 1 VI.
Try it out in a store. I was so amazed that even with the digital zoom, the pictures are still great. This is because the main sensor I think is 48MP and downres to 16MP. So even when you zoom in, the final image is still sharp.
You didn’t show the portrait mode....it’s 🔥🔥
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Xperia phones' Achilles heel is the short OS update support.

12 years of using Xperia phones. Love the expanded memory, 3mm jack, notification light and 21:9 aspect ratio.
However, I'm veering away from Sony unless match software support with other mainstream brands. 2 years of android update is not good enough for the premium price we're expected to pay. Get your act together Sony!

@@AxR558 yeah its sad... but I guess a trend as every normal function gets removed as "obsolete" or "nieche feature" (also sd cards and headphone jacks).
I guess there are some apps now that can sort of replace the nofification led using the edge of the screen or the flash led to light up.. I also had a weird little app YEARS ago that let me reconfigure the headphone jack into an led output (if you soldered your own plug thing) or a reconfigurable buttton (also a 3.5mm jack to button thingie) But that would make the headphone jack occupied and took a bit off my battery life as the phone has to power the jack constantly when it tries to detect button presses.
