*This takes me back to many cell cycles ago where I was purchasing fine jewelry for my fellow pseudocoelomate. The Acariformes behind the counter really tried to sell me his "secret crystals", calling them the "globules of love". Needless to say, I took him up on the offer, but for some reason, couldn't for the Mastax in me get rid of them. They stuck to everything and everycell nearby! Well, on a brighter note, I did become a lot more popular with the lady mites.*
This video is reminding me how it's been told (by this channel and others) how viscous water is to creatures so small. These mites are still small enough to still endure water's syrupiness while just large enough to make this viscousness visible in the particles they're moving around only for those particles to practically return to their starting position
I cannot tell how important this channel has become to me and how much I love it. For years now, first thing I do coming back from work is a little journey to the microcosmos. Game of thrones compared to this masterpiece is nothing. I'm literally waiting for another episode right after I hear Hank saying "thank you...".
The water flea or whatever it was zooming by around 2:00 was hilarious. These water fleas are on the larger side and it even looks like they have a light reflection off of their bodies between that and it looks like the fleas are being pinned by the cover of the slide or something when they are sitting still. They almost look enourmous with those things in mind but Hank's footage at end seems to return them to their tiny size.
I HAVE NOT WATCHED THE VIDEO YET I'm very excited for this one, I have a water mite culture in a large soda container, they have been with me, container sealed, for over a year. Beautiful beings.
@@tylociraptor8131 I've always been interested in smaller forms of life, it's odd to me. A bunch of random space that decided it wants to do its own thing for a while
hey have you thought of looking at fungi threw microscopes? like how the mycelium spreads and how microorganisms react to it. i think t would be really interesting!
Your tangent on fish reminded me of a video by a youtuber called "The Dave". He makes HD videos on aquarium fish. I believe it was his video on largemouth bass where a very large water mite swam across the screen. The bass looked at it but turned away. I thought that was strange. Largemouth bass aren't known for turning down food. So there is something to that idea.
"The few times we've seen a spider under the microscope is...because we put it there." That dry humor has me laughing so hard when no one else is finding it funny.
When you say fish i imagine you are referring to newly hatched fish larvae, like the ones that feed on zooplankton(not filter feeders) because i can't see even a minnow bothering with a mite, aren't they too small?
They're actually not that small, the flashy ones are easily visible to the naked eye in the water, almost sesame seed sized but extremely round, would be the perfect mouthful for a small fish like a minnow.
Cute little critters! Thanks, even if they *are* almost macroscopic, comparatively! Still... "Walking Drops of Blood" would be an amazing band name! Sorry, folks, I called it first!
I did NOT expect to learn that some species of water mites are more or less into bondage...! Fascinating video, thank you for all the hard work you guys put into these!!
Are water mites related to the Red Bugs, same thing, that are Dragonfly parasites (Water chiggars or duck mites, harvest mites) inhabiting half the hot springs out there?

well...this wasn`t a real journey as we didn`t see the crystal poop, the sticky vomit thing or dancing mites...I guess you want us to believe or this is some sort of audio book now...
From a phylogenetic perspective its actually a pretty good insight as it appears ticks are more closely related to mites than the other macroscopic arachnids. Of course in the phylogenetic context mites are more or less paraphyletic as in non mite arachnids probably descend from mite like ancestors at some point during the Cambrian and or early Ordovician.

I made a comment kinda thought that people wouldn’t see it
I knew i wasn't crazy for drawing spiders as dots with legs
You underestimate my ability to find arachnids cute, Hank.
I read "Water Mites" as "Walter Mites", which has mite rhyme with white. Which means if I can have a Water Mite as a pet, I'd name it Walter Mite.

ain't it the truth! there's something almost calming about the simplicity at times
Water mites! When i found that the specs in my aquarium were mites it filled me with dread! Fantastic to learn more about them
The eyes kind of look like little hearts 🥰
I misread that as arachnid bush and honestly topiary made of them unnerved me more than being ambushed by them.

The first arachnids pretty much looked like mites and ticks...cute eye placement and everything...arachnids are so interesting
Whaa... scorpions mate like that too!!
Crystal poop would be a lot easier to clean up. You might even save the prettiest ones and show them off.
Another great video guys!
Aww … they have little hearts 💕 for eyes.
