When James, our master of microscopes, was looking through samples he’d received from Spain, he didn’t expect to see this-a creature straight out of a horror movie, with dark reddish brown eyes and tentacles streaming out of its mouth.

It's crazy that a channel with almost a million subs is calling it quits when such high end content is so rare.
Hank's going broke. 😏
@@EddieDubsIf he didn't go woke maybe he wouldn't have gone broke. 😂
@Epic_C how do you go woke with a microscope channel?
@@MrQuijibo non binary amoebas.
I just found this channel too!! How sad. Maybe we can rally enough subs?
A microcosmos episode about Cthulu? I'm down. Gonna miss this channel.
Huh it's ending?
@@AkkarisFoxthat’s what all the comments say lately but I’m not sure why
@AkkarisFox They put out a video a few weeks ago saying the channel has been operating at a loss pretty much the whole time and its going to be over at the end of the year.
@@lmzaadi The archive of videos will remain, but they announced the channel will go quiet from next year.
@@DataSoong101 oucheeeee
Definitely going to miss this channel - but enjoying every last video we get before the end. Hope these will still be available to revisit in future when I need to chill out 😊
Whats happening?
Molecular oxygen is extremely rare in the universe, because it is so reactive. The entire reason Earth has as much oxygen as it does is due to photosynthetic microorganisms. Which is also a miracle that they've reduced CO2 content to virtually nil and are still able to live.
Oxygen is like a twenty dollar bill lying on the ground in public. They're EXTREMELY rare in nature because people so readily grab it up and claim it as their own, yet $20 are very common and lots of people are walking around with one.
Just because this channel is closing doesn't mean these creatures are going away.
We just won't see them coming.
Hank had so much fun when he said, "use one of those appendages to reach out from the screen FOR YOUR FACE." :)
I thought this was over, every episode I watch after feels like a gift I almost don't deserve. Appreciate your content guys
They'll be continuing to release new videos until the end of the year.
I've been feeling the same every time I get a notification for a new video!
3:16 The 630x Loxodes scene gives a beautiful sense of 3D depth that microscope slides rarely convey! Wonderful video!
the power of DIC

I will miss these amazing videos when they're gone...
Good thing they aren't taking any down when they stop making more.
Please continue to post whatever you find under the microscope, even if it's without high quality editing, music, or voiceovers.
So sad that this series will be coming to an end. If I may be so bold, I recommend the book, "Oxygen: the Molecule that Made the World", by Dr. Nick Lane. Even though it was published in 2002, it is a tour de force of the history, geology, geochemistry, biochemistry and evolution that produced oxygen in our atmosphere. And it still is remarkably up to date.
thank you! I've been looking for something like that. just downloaded it... 🙏🏻
You say 2002 like it was 100 years ago.
Will you consider uploading a playlist of the music made by Andrew? I’d really like to listen to the opening song of this video
They sell the soundtrack on their store, linked below this video.
@@lmzaadi thank you much
My god! what kind of microscope IS this?! it looks kinda like phase-contrast microscopy, but it's so clear, with no prismatic aberration.... I NEED this thing in my life!
Differential Interfernce Contrast, on a very high-end professional microscope.
There’s an early video on when James got it (via a fundraiser on the channel). It’s such a high end device that it comes with a technician to set it up.
that little feathery “worm” is really beautiful. sort of like the peacock of the microcosm. thanks. glad tardigrades are so
They keep reminding me of Christmas tree worms. They are beautiful. I recommend that everyone look them up. They're also tube worms and come in the most vibrant colours.
I always think of tube worms as underwater flowers. That's what they look like to me.
I love my tube worms, I am from Spain, every rock in the sea is filled with their holes.
Pity everyone says the channel is going to end, it would have been nice if there had been some way to increase income, I owe a lot to this channel, I've gotten top grades on exams thanks to it i will cherish every video
It’s shame the bigger media outlets don’t pick up some variation of it.
I feel like every video could relate back to tardigrades if you try hard enough
aw, that's a bit of a harsh introduction for that little tube worm lol
Am I the only one who finds it strangely beautiful?
I highly doubt it.
That gastrotrich was stunningly detailed! Like a full color SEM that does video!! Much praise to James!!
Anxiety inducing my rear, LET ME PET IT!!
5:49 an entire video series on this would be fascinating
One of my most favorite channels. Thanks to all who bring us these stunning views.
Im going to miss this channel so much
You had me at Cthulu. Beautiful photography. Interesting and amazing. All the best!
Horrifying? I tnink it is beautiful!
k
Oh I thougth this was over, amazing another episode. 🥳🥳🥳🥳
God, I wish YT had a decent science funding program, acting as a science patron, or at least better promote videos like this. This channel absolutely deserves it. I'm sad beyond words that you have to stop producing content for this channel. I wish you all the best and I hope you'll maybe revisit this channel, once the wind blows more favourably. Godspeed.
Having one last compilation with every video as your öadt video on this channel would be a great tribute to the channel.
this channel is pretty cool
I must've missed the video where we were told that this channel is operating at a loss! I will most definitely miss this channel!!! It's fascinating but also calming. At least we'll be able to watch them in the future 😊
Both humans and the worms are simply tubes with fancy bits attached, looking for stuff to put on one end and places where to put what comes out the other.
There's no need to reach cosmos to find monsters and creatures beyond imagination.
They are everywhere!!!!
Is it just me, or is the music for this video extra spicy??
Beautifully done. Wonderful episode!
Thank you Squarespace!
I love the eerie, creepy theme they play in the background while talking about unsettling topics. Does anyone know what this music is?
I too retract into my Tube when feeling threatened.
I absolutely love this channel content, please keep it up, this is high quality work. Thanks for sharing.
Hank, "You have something in common with this tube worm!"
Me, "Yeah, I have a bunch of tentacles sticking out of my face too."
Everyone: O__________________________O
Me, "I'm from New Jersey."
Everyone: Ohhhhhhhh, that explains it.
The microscopic world is endlessly fascinating. 🔬
Journey to the Microcosmos, I'm sad to see you go but it's understandable with the circumstances. your team's videos have filled a hole in my heart i never knew i needed filled, and started my interest in these tiny beings. being able to see them so big and colorful on my screen has inspired me artistically more times than i can count, and i'm sure will continue to keep a burning flame of creativity ignited in my soul for as long as i'm around. I greatly appreciate all you've done for me.
Since Hank dropped the F bomb in a short, i cant not expect it at any moment
Again, as always, I love this channel. Is there a way we can buy a download of the entire series?
Microcosmic box set
Awesome video, as always!
i think some serpulid worms also make that kind of tube! i’m still new to worm identification though. always nice to see polychaetes get some attention!
pretty sick looking not gonna lie.
Been a dope journey since late spring 2019
I just discovered this channel and people are saying they are quitting.
The soundtrack on this episode hits differently
Wow!
Excellent.
great video, thank you
Should make a budget microscope video. Im currently trying to find one but have no clue whats good or where to start
Ill legit play your videos over & over for that moneyz lol
Well yeah. We’re both alive
I love this show so much ❤
Just hearing the channel is going silent at the end of the year and gotdaym that’s depressing. This is my fav channel and it seems like smart+chill basically doesn’t exist on TH-cam. Honestly super upsetting
Wow, it's tentacular.
Is it just me, or is does anyone else find the Holophyra at 2:46 kind of cute and funny with part of it inside that old cuticle and what looks like its big, fat butt sticking out?
Please also include info ie Darkfield, Brightfield, DIC, Phase Contrast, Polarized etc...it would literally take seconds to type and really give us valuable additional info.
I like the new title. The old one held a horrid reference...
Wowza! So, so cool!
@hankschannel @Jam'sGerms please keep making these when you have time to, every episode is a delight and i, among many others will be sad to see these stop
I’m going to miss this content so much 😭
dont show me microscopic barnicles that could eat my brain and leave me with a permanent lisp thank you.
i have sprawling mosstropolis, mosstropolmegaplexes. so glad they get in tuns as little balls, i wont worry so much when i gotta step on some to get through. if you dont hear from me they have sealed me in for good.
reads video title .... man do I really want to see this, ok here goes 😲
Incredible creature
It's a Bobbitt worm but it's small and doesn't like to move.
Neat.
Minutes those terrifying choppers!😬
Funny enough, almost every type of marine worm is more similar to it than the Bobbitt
I just discovered this Channel. Very sad to hear it's shutting down/being shut down. I don't know the reasons why, but hope this can be reversed. This would be a great resource for our public schools in the U.S. of America!
Love you guys. Good job for all the hard work. I'd love to see Andrew Huang reacting to one of the videos and see for himself how well his music creates the perfect atmosphere
6:02 I knew it! Because a hard blow blows away all the microorganisms. I'm sure James won't mind if I use him as a source in the scientific paper I'm writing on the 5 second rule.
These are fantastic to watch while high....❤😊
We have something in common?
Let me guess, we have a front and a back?
And wow, the great oxidation event rears it's head again.
Can you pretty please with sugar on top NOT cancel this channel? Idk what I’m going to do without it.
If they can find a super sponsor to make every episode profitable or at least break even, then maybe.
I too think that this is some species of Spirorbis.
It is SPECTACULAR and absolutey beautiful, just minding its own business! Cutie patootie!
Any of you ever play Flow back in the day? Reminds me of this microscopy.
wait... it has eyes?
I'm banking on the fact that the "we are finishing" was just a funding push... and, either way, the makers will probably end up doing their own youtube videos so we can still gorge on this insanely tasty eye candy. :)
James was making Jams Germs videos before this channel started. Hank saw them and reached out to him to collaborate.
You sound like Carl Sagan and I love it 😁
exterior mouth-lungs... they are actually closer to us than I thought.
It’s the reverse of our lungs
Would you still love me if I was a Cthulhu-like micro-worm?
My friend, why are you so afraid of this plant? 0:12
is that mean i shalt then worship chuthlu? chuthulu permeates all. Chuthulu dominates from every vantage. He is both more then massive and microscopic. "*CHUTHULU" mantra
It makes my heart hurt that you are leaving us. But I'm thankful that I can rewatch eps to my heart's content on YT. (I'm still marveling over Hank's goatee on CC Bio. 😜
does hank have a retainer in? he's gotten a bit lispy on this episode, not that I'm complaining. its charming
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"
Marvelous induction about oxygen and cells and all our history is around the oxygen.
Show me the worm that ate RFK Jr’s brain 😅😂
That was a How Do I Get Out of a Divorce Settlement Worm, which is why there are no photographs of it. It does not exist outside court documents.
Sad that nsf or pbs can’t fund this channel. This should be publicly funded.
Our fingers are tentacles. Fact.
Its my sense of humor, isn't it.
we are breathing farts from the oceans -_-
We mammals are clueless about low oxygen. We rely on low blood pH from dissolved co2 to signal the need to breath (hence hyperventilation=>blackout, deadly if diving.
Has anyone tried tardi's with high dissolved co2?
Inert and low reactive gases can trick us into not realizing we’re suffocating, too.
That’s a katooloo
I’ll miss you guys :(
Eldritch Horror? Well, it is Monday, I guess.
Stressing tardigrades makes for tuns of fun. tavi.
So there are ilithids in the microcosmos... eep!
