I found the transition to three very different things (tunicate, fish, mammoth hair) jarring. While it is true that we are global warming out the Mammoth remains, we hear that so often that it detracts and makes a lot of people go "Oh, long politically correct lecture ahead" and tune out.
Something worth mentioning is that tunicates are our closest relatives amongst invertebrates: their larvae are closely resembling underdeveloped fish with a "proto-spine" and a similar arrangement of organs and muscles. Thus, the main theory of vertebrate evolution is that we originate from a tunicate-like ancestor, who remained in the larval stage.
It's strange to think about the journey made by the atoms in that mammoth hair. From a stationary plant, to roaming around on the mammoth in icy winds (where did it travel?), to buried in darkness and then ages later in James' collection, viewed by other bipeds around the planet.
A shame when something is that delicate, but it's not like it's anyone's fault. James doesn't hurt any of these critters, for sure - it's clear he cares for them very carefully! Thanks for all you folks do! ❤️❤️
That fish is definitely some kind of fry, a baby fish feeding on plancton as indicated by the greeninits stomache. It could be a baby bass, or blue gill, orstivkle back or minnow.
For sure not a Bass. A newly hatched bass looks like a miniature version of its parents. They also behave exactly the same. Toss into the tank dry fish food typically given to tropical fish and they zoom up to check it out then just slowly swim away. Nope, that's not food. Drop in a spoon full of live baby brine shrimp and they are all devoured in seconds. Minnow maybe. Bluegill? Nope.
@@onegreenev a newly hatched bass has eyes near the size of it’s head, a yolk sac the size of it’s head, and a tail that looks like a tadpole. Even after they’ve finished off their yolk sac, they eat zooplankton for a bit.
@@jessehunter362 Nope, baby bass look like miniature adults. I know. I had baby bass hatch and the color of the babies is the same as an adult. They do eat zooplankton and super small micro animals like baby brine shrimp similar to zooplankton in size. They are very aggressive towards live food. Not so much for tropical flake fish food. Baby blue gill are similar. Should go out and check it out for yourself.

@@jessehunter362 Jesse, I had bass eggs on a couple stones in my aquarium and as soon as they hatched they were miniature adults. Straight from the egg. I watched them. It wasn't like a week or two later. It was straight from the egg. They are ready to hunt as soon as they hatch. Bluegill is similar. They need to hunt from the beginning. They do. Baby bass are larger than you think as well. Still small. Im not sure what you are looking at but it is clear they are not bass. Not large mouth bass or small mouth bass anyway. My experiment was before the advent of computers and digital video.

I guess a good one and easy one to learn and understand would be the Micropachycephalosaurus. Saurus being lizard and Micro a word used a English helps for those who hadn't noticed the names being modular or how to pronounce /view them. I do have to say some of the weird names are funny too and often have a weird backstory too to why they were named that by scientists. Ever heard of the "Irritator" the backstory behind this weirdly named type of Spinosaurus was that the few fragments of fossils scientists did have of this animal they had no clue at all what they were looking at for a very long time. Scientists eventually got so frustrated being unable to figure it out they decided to name the specimen "Irritator" When I read about it, had a blast doing so imagining the scenario they were in.

A couple of my friends also got hooked that way. And once you get used to pronouncing the scientific names, it's a breeze later on in life. And yep. Lots of weird and quirky names in taxonomy. The most recent one I came across that I can remember offhand is _Tinkerbella nana._ A fairy fly described in 2013.

Please keep in mind that Hank has a very good narrator’s voice. You can bet that talent scouts listen to YT programing looking for who they can represent in bigger ponds. Hank can probably make much more doing voiceover for advertising or entertainment programing. It is sad but true. The lady who voices this episode is also quite good. I am not a a talent scout, but I can tell you I would listen to this person talking about most anything, as I would listen to Hank.
I’m going out on a limb here, but I don’t believe too much actually happens outside of moisture. All single-celled bacteria need water in order to function, for example, but there are many types that can survive extended periods without moisture present. Microbial life basically pauses without adequate moisture, though that’s not always the case. I found a study from 1991 that does list some microbes that propagated on an entirely dry cotton ball for 2 months 🤷🏻♂️ But yeah, dry environments are basically just hibernation zones for most microbes, and little to nothing actually happens until they are reintroduced to water/moisture. Again, not an expert, but also not talking entirely out of my butt lol
There's whole ecosystems that live in beach sand which goes through dry and wet cycles. Apparently many of those organisms are still unknown to science.

It will probably never happen, but I wish they would allow two audio tracks for these videos. It's clear that many fans prefer Hanks voice for the soothing effect it has. And I really think she would be perfect for narrating videos teachers would show to their students in class since Hanks voice would lull too many of them to sleep.

I think you're mixing up genetic testing on humans with animals. iirc we have laws against designer babies, but for extinct animals I would be surprised.

Definitely a bit jarring to be confronted with a different voice when you've become conditioned to expect only Hank's, & you get jolted by one that sounds more like Mr. Hanky's... Still, once I acclimated to her voice I thought she was good...damn good! But I also watch this channel at around 2AM to help wind me down in preparation for sleep. The small, slow oozing motions, punctuated by random things zipping by & bumping off each other. The weird & wonderful burbling electronica soundtrack so perfect for this channel but not for watching Leon the Lobster (especially vs. the Killifish!😱). And then there's Hank's voice. The perfect trifecta!😅 Maybe I'll just have to start tuning a bit earlier. She'd go great with a cup of joe @ 6 in the morning...

Fish - especially baby fish - are suuuuper delicate critters so, he did his best and I think probably the fish lived a lot longer than it would have with some other folks less experienced with tanks and water conditions. One thing that popped into my head as I watched this - I know that mainly the focus is on the ALIVE microcosmos denizens - but I wondered what would happen if you could take that fish eye and - I'm not sure the term - get a tiny "slice" of it onto a slide. Even at the scale shown in the video it's mesmerizing, and I just felt really curious as to what else you might see if you kind of took it apart. (I was one of the more enthusiastic students back in middle school when they let us dissect things. Maybe a somewhat gruesome thing? But hey it'd still be interesting!)

At that stage most fish are too difficult to tell the species of, however an actual icthyologist might be able to.
The fact that the professor was able to tell the difference between similar looking two-headed ciliates amazes me.

There's definitely a dry microcosmos, although it's more about microscopic arthropods than bacteria.

Soil bacteria are a thing. I think it's just difficult to see dry things in a compound microscope.
You should film the decay of a death. Film a newly dead fish or animal under the microscope and watch the decomposition process
