@@ToxikDeth It takes a lot of tinkering, and sometimes emulation, to get old titles to work in modern computers with Windows 10 or 11. Do I recommend it? If you can mod the games to make them function better, I guess so.
I remember when the 5C came out, in fact the 5C and 5S were the first iPhones to support 4G from all operators - as the iPhone 5 only supported EE and 3 4G, and the iPhone 4S and older didn't even have 4G. So as a cheap 4G device, it's ok? I know how you feel with app support though. I haven't owned an iPhone before, but Androids have the same issue in that the device will stop getting updates, and then, at some point, apps won't support the old version of the OS you're stuck with. With Androids, you can try and get a custom ROM installed with a newer version of the OS (albeit with possible bugs and poor performance). On iOS... you're stuck. And IMO, not being able to use the Spotify App is a bit of a deal breaker. So no, I can't recommend older devices like 8-9 year old iPhones in 2022.
I loved my 5C it was durable too. The cheaper plastic held up to serious drops in middle school. 8 ft off a balcony onto the hard ground. Only a corner of the screen came up, just popped it back in and it kept going. I wish they still made C versions

I think the only way of putting old apps onto older iPhones is by manually finding the right IPA files online and using 3rd party software such as iMazing to install them. I have backups of all my old IPAs which I manually installed onto my old iPod Touches - both a 1st gen and a 4th gen.
I remember my younger brother having one of these, don't remember it being that solid but the storage was bad even for the time, it was constantly running out of space if you so much as too some photos. I've had a similar issue with old android tablets in that the hardware is less of an issue that the lack of software support. Shame but nice barging nonetheless!
Good job bud, although I would advise using a plastic pry tool to lift the ribbons...those resistors surrounding the socket are prone to popping off when metal tools are used. I've made that expensive mistake in the past... I do much of the same thing, I used to be a master repair tech and manager for two tech-repair franchises. I recently refurbished two iPhones that I found in the recycles bin: a 64GB factory unlocked iPhone 4s and a 32GB factory unlocked iPhone SE (1st gen). Both were boot looping and just needed new batteries (which I had in my spares bin as well). They were iCloud-free; the SE I used as a dedicated Bluetooth remote, the 4s I use now as my iPod since my 30GB classic drive finally let out the magic smoke.

one thing you can try to do to install an older version of an app you haven't downloaded before is to install and old version of itunes that has iOS app purchase support and get the app on your apple id that way. I was very sad when my iPhone 5 died last summer because I had to use an old nokia for 2 months.
If you log in with the same account on a modern iPhone and add the app to your account it will usually allow you to download the latest compatible version on older devices.
To install basically any old app version in (at least the 5s) in your 5c, you can just get itunes on a windows/mac pc and get the apps there, and then download in the phone later on. i did that with the 5s, i never had an iphone before, got a used 5s, and just got every damn app: uber, waze, maps, whatsapp, discord, teams (a little slow tho, but its slow everywhere), telegram, facebook, netflix, plants vs zombies 2, youtube, etc. All working in iphone 5s. And it's actually USABLE
Hey, just a heads up! If you have EVER bought an app, you can get an older version through "Purchased". I just tested this yesterday by buying Terraria for the first time ever on my iPad Air 2 which is up to date, and then, when it appeared on my Purchased list, I downloaded it on my old iPhone 3GS, and got some old Thanksgiving update version from 2014. So you do not have to had bought it back then for it to work. If there has ever been a compatible version available, it will work.
As long as it's supported, some older versions are great for Airplay. My sister gave me her old iPhone 8 and I use it for Airplay as the LG TV doesn't have all the streaming apps I need.
iPhones seem to age considerably better simply due to pure optimization, as well as long support life. Shows that GHz doesn't always matter. Also, cleaning out those speaker grills and mics would help BIG time with sound quality, trust me. The mesh gets impacted with dust over the years. Rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs, and toothpicks work well.
I remember wanting this phone when it came out as a way to dip my toes into iOS as a smartphone system (I've used iPod touches but didn't have much of anything bought from the store) and be a backup to whatever Android phone I had at the time. Now I rock an iPhone 13 Pro and a Pixel 2 XL (still a good phone, shame it no longer receives security updates and I have to instead use other ROMs such as PixelDust).
Still have my iPhone 6 from 9 grade (now finished highschool) I have it changed battery once and screen twice it still works great I generally use it for media consumption because the speaker and screen is really good
That option for having all your iphone devices connected to the same wifi ring and be able to answer surprised the heck out of me when i had an oldie switched on once. might be useful. I used to use them to play podcasts in my shop over a JBL bluetooth speaker but moved onto dirt cheap Moto G's since then I have a 2023 G Power I got with a broken screen for around $50 on ebay, Another screen set me back $25. Cheap phones are a hoot. Cheap older anythings are a hoot. Watching this on a Thinkpad T-520.
I used a 5c for a few years. In the end I forgot to take it out my pocket and it fell off a roller coaster. I tried putting a new screen on it but a few of the display pin connectors were ripped off. I had an image but a line of touchscreen doesn't work, and there's like display glitches where the touchscreen don't work. R.I.P Green 5c. You made phone calls.
You mention at one point that you had to purchase an app 5 years ago, I actually believe you could still purchase/download an app today from a newer device with the same Apple ID and then go back to this device and *potentially* be prompted to download an older version.
I still have 16GB silver iPhone 5 running since 2012/2013 now running iOS 10.3.4. I use Spotify a lot and occasionally Twitter, Chrome, and Gmaps. I also play CoC and I guess the login problems are a matter of luck right now because when I press the download button on app store it offers me the last compatible version instead of running through your previously installed apps in your account.
Honestly considering the price not too bad! If you’re looking for an old cheap iPhone though a 5s may be better since it is 64 bit. It also got a security update last year! That’s almost a decade of updates!
Problem with this video is that there are a ton of old versions for apps Available and if you have them downloaded. Also disconnect the battery first and sometimes side loading helps and there are fixes
This video inspired me to pick one of these up for my collection. For... some reason... Not my smartest purchase. Well, I just finally bypassed the stupid OOBE setup and I must say, the iPhone 5c was underrated.
Yep thats why I got a old iPad tobuse for playing music on at work, even tho it's old and I had to do some work around to get TH-cam music to work, it just works, unlike a old Samsung tablet, it never just worked.
the 5C is super cool! u can dualboot it even on ios 7 and if u have some knowledge even on iOS 6 (yes, on iOS 6, but touchscreen will not work so useless)
oh and you're wrong on one thing: if the app needs an older version, U CAN EVEN AFTER THIS, download it with a newer iphone and then go to the purchase option and will brings u the option to download an older version, done it with iOS 4.2.1, 7.0, 9.3.5 etc and works perfectly
I got one of these back in 2013 when they were 99 dollars on contract. I loved it. I had never had an iPhone before, so I thought it was amazing. Had the blue one. It's currently sitting in a drawer in my bedroom. Still in good condition. A solid device for the time.
i've got a Samsung Galaxy A13 SM-A137, and this is pretty decent in terms of performance, and Samsung has been kind enough to make the phone only in 32-bit and I lack so much support whereas phones in lower price ranges just get 64-bit support while not being able to be powerful enough to utilize it.
If you have jailbreak and use something like app admin to install specific app versions you can sign in, but for some reason google forces some error on anything older than iOS 10
The complete lack of app support is a real bummer as the Iphone 5c still runs smooth as butter otherwise and works great as a back-up phone in a pinch. Can't do too much with it beyond the basic phone functions but what it can do it does really well. It really is a testament to the stability and optimisation of ios. Mine could really do with a new battery though as I struggle to get half a day out of it now and once it gets down to around 25% it'll usually plummet to 0 in as little as ten minutes. I'm not sure if I'll bother replacing the battery on it however as even though I had been using it as my back-up for the longest time, I've just in the past week picked up a Pixel 3 for £50 that is going to be filling the role from now on and it may be a bit off topic but I've got to say that that I'm blown away by how good this pixel 3 is for the £50 I paid for it.
You can download a specific old version of itunes with the istore still active and link all the apps you want to your account making them available on the 5C if the 32b version is still there. Works on my ipad mini 1st gen on iOS 9.3
I had an iPhone 5 for about a year before buying a Xiaomi Note 9 PRO. I could use TH-cam , an older version of Instagram , and even tiktok like bro i was really happy that tik tok supported ios 10. It was a nice phone to use just for social media and videos.
Good to see this worked out. Though I would be curious how much a replacement 5C screen would be these days, for those of us who don't just happen to have a spare screen in a junk drawer? ;) Even so a $1 iPhone (potentially + cost of screen) that still mostly works isn't a bad deal.

You could try to jailbreak and install AppStore++ and Checkmate, Store! Which allows you to downgrade apps (AppStore++) and stops the Incompatible message (Checkmate Store!) I’m not sure if this will fix anything. The jailbreak H3lix supports iOS 10 on 32bit processors, in my eyes, it’s worth a shot
I wish people would start benchmarking more rythm games, like I have one of these old iphone 5s and arcaea is a fantastic game that still supports these old phone and it's fun.
For this old 32 bit iPhones you need tô jailbreak and install a tweak that will let app store download the older 32bit version (i tested this on iPhone 5 and 4s in various iOS, like iOS 10, 8, 6, etc.) I use spotify on my 4s on iOS 6 like an iPod gine
Fun fact you literally just have to buy it on a modern iPhone and then you can get the older version in most cases I have an old iPad mini first gen that I bought with a brand new Apple ID set up on it. If you would have jailbroken depending on the iOS version you could have installed a tweet called app admin I think it's called and it would let you pick your version. You'll also want checkmatee, store! To disable certain capability checks that would otherwise prevent you from downloading older versions
The iPhone 5c is the phone that made me switch to android. At the time I had an iPhone 3GS that I knew wouldn't recieve updates anymore so in early 2014 I got myself a new phone. The only 2 options on the iPhone side were the 5s and the 5c, with the 5s being way too expensive for me. Then a friend got a Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE and I was blown away by how big its screen was. It looked like it was 3 generations ahead anything made by Apple. That's why I got an S4 that was cheaper than the 8GB iPhone 5c. Alsd I would have bought the green 5c and now I think the white one that matches the original MacBook looks best. I kinda want to pick one up one day.
Not very different from my windows 8 mobile experience 5 years ago after it was discontinued. Even to the "if you press many times the app will randomly install" but. Except while you had to try 8 times, I'd have to press 80 or something.
It's unbelievable how functional that phone still is despite the lack of support. Imagine if Apple & devs actually bothered to support it. Too bad they'd rather squeeze you for every penny by forcing you to upgrade. A completely unethical business model, but then again, so are most business models.
I remember when BitLife was in beta in maybe 2018. I showed it to my friend on my phone. he thought it was pretty cool. the background colour was a fairly desaturated and dark blue. the app itself was really really minimalistic, with basically no ui design, and I thought this was just a small obscure title. @@voteDC most old games don't even run on Windows 10/11 what do u mean?
@@ToxikDeth It takes a lot of tinkering, and sometimes emulation, to get old titles to work in modern computers with Windows 10 or 11. Do I recommend it? If you can mod the games to make them function better, I guess so.
I miss my 5c.
Perfect size and resolution. Everything is so huge these days, can barely be operated with one hand.
The back of that phone is just an entire emotional rollercoaster by itself lmao
Raise daughter, laugh and cry with her
I remember when the 5C came out, in fact the 5C and 5S were the first iPhones to support 4G from all operators - as the iPhone 5 only supported EE and 3 4G, and the iPhone 4S and older didn't even have 4G.
Puedes instalar Spotify con Jailbreak y usando Checkmate Store
or just download mp3s and put em over itunes
I never understood the catch of Spotify, for me TH-cam pretty much does everything Spotify does
Works Similarly to My Fire HD 8 in TH-cam Playback when you get the Apps Downloaded
You can use itunes on a PC to add the apps to your account and they will show up in purchased apps, so you don't have to have ever downloaded the apps
I loved my 5C it was durable too. The cheaper plastic held up to serious drops in middle school. 8 ft off a balcony onto the hard ground. Only a corner of the screen came up, just popped it back in and it kept going. I wish they still made C versions
But that would hurt the brand if you think like apple but Samsung has cheaper products but most still think about the more expensive ones.
That inscription is just perfect!
I using an 5s as my 2nd device alongside a newer android. Changed the battery once and it's kept making/receiving calls since. Spotify still works too 😂.

Never clicked so fast on a Budget Builds video. It's definitely worth it
i am happy to see someone likes this phone I used it for a very long time gotta say this phone packs a punch even in gaming
And still you can fix the classic or even upgrade it to use flash storage
@@elfedorausado Oh for sure I would Flash convert it.
I used to mod and resell lots of them back in the day and they're way more profitable (and reliable) when set up for flash than rotational media.
Mine failed right after I got the iPhone 4s, tho, so it was either spend money on the iPod for the ZIF converter PCB/memory card, or spend no money for now and use the iPhone using a free battery I nearly recycled because when was the last time anyone needed a 4s repaired?
I work full time, and I do tech repair/refurb/re-sale as a side hustle, but I have to be careful with how many personal projects I take on.
@@DJSekuHusky i totally get you. I just fixed my old iPhone 5 and, since I truly don't need it as a phone, I am seriously considering using it as a music player [my music library is not extensive and do not have access to Spotify where I live]
That engraving is just icing on the cake
TH-cam no longer works on iOS 10. You now get the update required screen.
My replacement philosophie teacher actually was using this phone as his daily driver, i was blown away when i looked on his desk
I just bought an iphone 4 which also downloaded the 32 bit versions of games
one thing you can try to do to install an older version of an app you haven't downloaded before is to install and old version of itunes that has iOS app purchase support and get the app on your apple id that way.
I was very sad when my iPhone 5 died last summer because I had to use an old nokia for 2 months.
For the Spotify Issue, you have to downgrade the app to a specific version for it to work.
Impressive showing by the 5C, still usable, but it's not 1$ unless someone gives you a free replacement display
The parts are still cheap, it's like 5$ for an icloud locked phone that you can get parts from
Hey, just a heads up!
This was my first iPhone coming from Blackberry 10 & then a mid range HTC I was blown away x
You can use an old version of iTunes on the PC to download apps to your account on the PC
Still have it, and still is working. Works fine just battery giving up.
Akshum is a hero, whos name will never be forgotten.
Before the beginning of 2021 I had been daily driving this exact phone since 2016. Was my first smartphone I ever owned. Still works today even.
I got one of these back in 2013 when they were 99 dollars on contract. I loved it. I had never had an iPhone before, so I thought it was amazing. Had the blue one. It's currently sitting in a drawer in my bedroom. Still in good condition. A solid device for the time.
Understandable, have a nice day.
i've got a Samsung Galaxy A13 SM-A137, and this is pretty decent in terms of performance, and Samsung has been kind enough to make the phone only in 32-bit and I lack so much support whereas phones in lower price ranges just get 64-bit support while not being able to be powerful enough to utilize it.
If you have jailbreak and use something like app admin to install specific app versions you can sign in, but for some reason google forces some error on anything older than iOS 10
It's a good quick flip
Interesting no comment about Ten S being called XS
I wonder if Maria will ever find out this video..
Great video! I also wish for the days when an iPhone was that easy to repair/replace the screen compared to nowadays...
You can download a specific old version of itunes with the istore still active and link all the apps you want to your account making them available on the 5C if the 32b version is still there. Works on my ipad mini 1st gen on iOS 9.3
6:17 a fellow Porsche 924 fan! Nice
4:51. Support ended for the 5C back in 2016 with iOS 10. I personally used the 5C back around that time.
good 2013 - 2015 vibe here 14:03
I had an iPhone 5 for about a year before buying a Xiaomi Note 9 PRO. I could use TH-cam , an older version of Instagram , and even tiktok like bro i was really happy that tik tok supported ios 10. It was a nice phone to use just for social media and videos.
Have l seen a Hogs of War PS1's portrait? Yes!
Good to see this worked out. Though I would be curious how much a replacement 5C screen would be these days, for those of us who don't just happen to have a spare screen in a junk drawer? ;)
Even so a $1 iPhone (potentially + cost of screen) that still mostly works isn't a bad deal.
actually ebay auto chooses the category based on what your selling but the seller has the full authority to change the category before the fully list it
You could try to jailbreak and install AppStore++ and Checkmate, Store! Which allows you to downgrade apps (AppStore++) and stops the Incompatible message (Checkmate Store!) I’m not sure if this will fix anything. The jailbreak H3lix supports iOS 10 on 32bit processors, in my eyes, it’s worth a shot
Optimization is everything
I wish people would start benchmarking more rythm games, like I have one of these old iphone 5s and arcaea is a fantastic game that still supports these old phone and it's fun.
For this old 32 bit iPhones you need tô jailbreak and install a tweak that will let app store download the older 32bit version (i tested this on iPhone 5 and 4s in various iOS, like iOS 10, 8, 6, etc.)
I use spotify on my 4s on iOS 6 like an iPod gine
The listing, the packaging and even the phone looks like some kid tried to sell it to get few cash to buy GTA remastered edition for their Switch.
It's nice to see you do another video on an Apple product! As always, this was a great watch!
one thing to include on your phone benchmarks, delta touch with brutal doom or project brutality
I remember when BitLife was in beta in maybe 2018. I showed it to my friend on my phone. he thought it was pretty cool. the background colour was a fairly desaturated and dark blue. the app itself was really really minimalistic, with basically no ui design, and I thought this was just a small obscure title. Then, years later I saw it in tech reviews. I also had a similar experience with ultrakill.
As cool as the 5C was, I opted for the 5S. That’s somehow still supported, and good thing in case my latest iPhone craps out or gets stolen.
I'm typing this from the iPhone 5c TH-cam app. It works fine for me
