I used to make what I called "refrigerator soup" every week! I used whatever was leftover in the refrigerator added tomatoes or onions or other staples! It fed us all when times were hard. I was raised by a mother and grandmother who grew up during the depression in the south!!

GIs during WWII called corn beef hash, "shit on a shingle." Hahahahahaaa... In my house we had cream tuna on toast and I LOVED it!

alot of these are still around and I grew up in the 80 s and 90s with great depression poverty and im a home cook and cook alot of this stuff and my Easter European grandma would know the cabbage and noodles..and crap on a shingle is great we eat it alot..i just substitute the dried beef for buddig lunch meat..and the trick to the mock apple pie is adding apple cider vinegar to the pie for the apple flavor..but i cook all the time id rather waste the money spent on takeout for a few days of food to make something cheaper and tastier...and um vinegar pie isn't bad and its from the Victorian era not the 30s ..alot of these recipes are older than the 30s

I think my mom learned a few of these recipes from my grandmother because she cooked those recipes when I was a child. Now I make carnivore diet meat egg drop soup with homemade bone broth. I didn't know it was a depression era recipe. People can be so creative. For some reason, I think the vinegar pie sounds tasty.

This narration is horrific. Most of the dishes actually sound halfway decent. Squirrel Stew, though? Hell no.
