    You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned, “vanity”. A lot of people are into the aesthetic rather than the art in its purity.

    The Takeaway : Get In. Get Out. Get On With Life.
    If you apply this approach to working within The Record Industry, then some things start to make sense.
    There's this band, whose song I came across I really liked. Only to find out that they stopped making music soon after.
    Maybe they caught a measure of success that they used to transition to something else OUTSIDE of the record business.
    This is exactly the sentiment of this entire video.

    C.K. Definitely opened my eyes to knowing what being an independent artist is. I used think that getting a lot of streams matter but now I know that it doesn’t. I’d always found myself trying to do other things as an artist outside of streaming and it just feels better. I still have a hard time putting myself out there because I don’t want rely on TikTok and those thing I actually want to get in front of an audience fr fr. So at the moment I’m still working on my sound and everything and pushing myself to be an actual independent artist by expressing who I am and what I can really do. Shout to Curtiss King and all the DIYers. 💯💯💯

    This video hits different, what you said about fame is something I experienced strangely enough from playing a cellphone game called "RAPSTAR Rapper Simulator" I know it sounds silly talking about a cellphone game when your discussing real life but part of the game is spending millions to keep up appearances on Billboard and Fame.

    The problem is most Independent artist don't know how to work their material. You can be an Independent and be successful in your own road not worrying about what everyone else is doing. It isn't rocket science all you need to do is the work and be CONSISTENT on your career. The reason most of these artist are broke on these labels because they lacked the knowledge on how the music business runs. So they have to depend on everything from the label while the label knows they have a new sucker in the tax write off bracket at the same time always keeping the artist in debt. That's why THERE IS: 1. The Music 2. The Music Business 3. The Music Industry. Love the first Learn the 2nd Outsmart the 3rd. You will be successful.

    • @rayojordan2838

    Thank you for this, sir! Your commentary hits hard and deep. "What is your number?", 'hypnotized by being famous", "allergic to money" are just three of many hits in this video. Knowing yourself is a requirement of independence in any form. Thank you for helping others get that.

    Great video as always! Working with Big Jerm has been paying off, Nov 28th I give y’all ‘IDK Yet’ a 8 song project that’s already garnered a meeting with a A&R. Thank you so Curtis for being more than just a artist but someone who’s truly trying to help other DIYers out there. I remember a decade ago when I was 22 and broke and had to pick did I wanna buy food or use that money on weed while cooking in the studio. Just know hard work and having fun does work people! You don’t need to sell your sell or act out of character. 🙏

    This is a great overview. I love the commentary from around 11:00 onwards. This I think does not only apply to music but nearly every other walk of life. In essence we all have to get our heads down and figure out what works for us and work on that basis, leaving all the vanity behind us. Well said man!

    They are called MINIDIES "MAJOR INDIES" I worked at Arista years ago and that term was around and held close to the chest as it helped artist claim independent with secret major backing to break through and tap into young artist who would admire them in the indie light.

    • @Dihmarko
      @Dihmarko 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Indie just means the artists pays for their own promo thru label services upfront, so they get a better split.

    • @teedouble
      @teedouble 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @Dihmarko no completely true.Youre speaking of a P&D, which the artist incures more risk and money with little return unless moving large numbers as the artist had to supply the album,pay producers and admin the pub and royalty splits. In the streaming era, those deal don't happen as their are no large physical products to sell. Artist can still do all the rest but usually end up owing for the labels help as streaming which alot of sales are based off of are peanuts,so you get an investment you can get a return on to look cool. A Mindie.

    truth is that the old model is still effective the traditional route is still there.
    d.i.y.
    make music
    get it out there, not the internet only.
    the physical world.
    hand to hand.
    sell product to fans at shows, start small. grow
    get music out there, promotion.
    through that find who is wanting it. Now market it to them.
    Invest in yourself.

The podcast is way quieter than your audio and then when your pop notification comes in it's way louder than your voice. I say that because how does a producer get it going on some real money in today's age? We don't rap or have any interest in being in the artist lane.

      @@richdirectionthat's a niche. That's not most people. Your reach is significantly repressed. The general public blows in the direction of the wind. They want what's easier, which is understandable. And that easier way is streaming. Not buying CDs or Vinyls or Cassettes. But it means YOU have to cater to THEM. Not them catering to YOU.

    If that is a disqualifying factor for being called independent, both you and Joe Budden need to take a course on capitalism. Particularly you need to read Yanis Varoufakis's works on Techno feudalism - because the companies that own or manage, i.e. major share holders of the record companies basically own and/or manage a massive majority of everything.
    Which means, you can _never_ qualify as being independent because as soon as you use any streaming platform, use youtube in any way, you are no longer independent.
    Which means this channel needs to shut down and open up a website and start streaming its contents from there. The fact that this channel exists on youtube would disqualify it as DIY and independent.
    My man even says "I could sell physical products, I do this, I been doing this" - using one of the MANY services, that are neither DIY, open source or independent. I'm guessing the merch he is producing is outsourced to another platform, the technology used to sell it is probably too.
    Thus, the problem isn't the record industry, it is the economic system in and of itself.
