I find myself doing the same thing when buying clothing,I’m attracted to a certain type of style or piece that suits me and of course most stores have a version of it so I’m essentially buying the same thing over again🤷♀️
I got a crapton of black t-shirts and maxiskirts. Something is wrong in the universe for me if I don't wear them going out besides being forced to don formal wear for an event which is always black as well.🤣
It’s different with clothes though. You have to wear them every time you leave the house, you have to then wash them sometimes, and they don’t expire. Within reason, it’s beneficial to stick to a style you know suits you and buys several pieces like that so it’s easier to decide what to wear and you don’t have to worry that if your flattering items are in the laundry you won’t know what to wear. Makeup expires, and you only have one face. Lol. You can only put so much on at a time, and even those of us who love it and wear it “all the time” don’t wear it as often as clothes. And it’s not like every time I put on my favorite red lipstick I’m using the whole tube! Haha. So while I am of course guilty of having many repeats of things like red lipstick, there comes a point where it actually encumbers you from even using your favorite products.

Emily, this is a great video, and I nice reminder as to why I got rid of almost all of my makeup. I bought it for the wrong reasons. Em I did that with elf wow brow. I bought one loved it, then bought a backup.. then opened my drawers and somehow I had three. I have no idea when I bought the first one. Makeup madness! 😭
This is one of the reasons your one of my faves and I never miss a video of yours. So many TH-camrs (inadvertently) pressure us to constantly buy the newest pallet all of the time. The truth is, the average person doesn't need 20 or more pallets. Most of us can make due with what we have 9 times out of 10 instead of jumping on the "new" bandwagon every week.
You're so right Em, i was looking at the new Pat blushes the other day and thinking what shades to get so i went in to my stash and swatched them all and had a good reality check ! I have more blushes than anyone person can use so spending that much money on more is just silly!!
Emily following up on your thoughts , do a “Use This Not That” , and do blush that subs as eye shadow, lipstick subs as blush, bronzer as crease shadow etc. Name brands and colours too
Having fewer products can inspire creativity. I've started to blend eyeshadow shades together or I layer blushes or bronzer to explore what I already have rather than buying more and it's fun! Great content on a topic we all struggle with ❤
I’ve really been trying to be more conscious about what I already own when it comes to making purchases now. I’m so happy to see you doing this style of video. Yes! Use what you have 😊
It's warm nude eyeshadow palettes and red lipsticks for me. A while back, I started making myself pull out and look at every single item I own in category I want to buy from. So if I want a new lipstick, first I pull out and look at every single lipstick I already own (30+) and if the sheer volume doesn't get me to change my mind, I usually find that I already have something similar to what I want to buy. And then if I do make a purchase, I know it's something unique.
I adore your videos Emily. I have been watching you since before your old pink room! I can’t say I watch every video but anytime I do you are so pleasant, kind and informative. Thank you for being such a light on TH-cam.♥️
For me, my big weakness is large, colorful eyeshadow palettes that make colorful eyeshadow looks approachable (ex: your Wants palette that started the craving, the So Jaded palette that emboldened it, the Morphe X James Charles palette that anchored it...all of which I own). Since buying all three of those, I've stopped myself from buying all _kinds_ of palettes because...those three give so much variety between them, who needs more? Seriously. I can pretty well recreate any look by dipping into the shadows collectively found in those three and I'm incredibly happy with the quality of all of them.
Hi Emily, I'm a 58 year old gramma and mother of 3. I absolutely love makeup and am a little obsessed. Lol. I loved the video about your mothers makeup as I remembered what my mom always used. I love your videos and always watch and learn. You are a great influence on young women today. My latest favorite makeup is Charlotte Tilbury. It's great for us blonde blue eyes grannies. Thanks, kristy.
Hi Em! I almost never comment on your wonderful videos, but I’m a follower for 10+ years, and I’ve never missed a single video in that time. I absolutely LOVED this video! I love your honesty and humility. I hope more beauty youtubers follow your lead with this. I think it’s a great idea!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 💕 All the best to you and your family.
This is such an awesome way to look at an individual level how we are spending and where we are over-consuming without beating ourselves up! Love!! ❤️❤️❤️
I love this idea! I'm so glad for the encouragement to look at what I already have that will get me the end result I'm looking for. Thank you for another great video!
Love this! Although, I’m not a naturist but I like the idea of consciously consuming less so ultimately less ends up in landfills. All this decluttering goes mostly in the garbage. Less purchases = less in the landfill.
So wise for all of us to go through our collection and have a good grip on what we already own❣️I’m definitely going to be doing that this weekend 👍🏼❤️This was a great video to really inspire me to take a step back and truly assess my wants and “needs” verses impulse buying before realizing I have certain things that will do the same things.l love your beauty wisdom❣️Thanks for another great eye opener of a video🥰Much love to you,Emily...I always learn something new and enlightening watching your videos❣️❣️❣️

Thank you Emily. It’s so much more useful to let us know what’s similar so we can be more conscious consumers! Please do more of these videos as more new launches are released!!!!
Love this! This should be a series with new releases. Every time a new release or releases pop out, compare them to what you have in your collection. This has really made me want to go through my collection and rediscover a few things!
Exactly what I am doing in my life. So much consumerism with new, new, new. Not just makeup for me but clothes too. I have 7 bright pink t-shirts and had another one in my hand today. I came to my senses and put it back
Conscientious consumerism! Such a common sense theory that most of us really don’t think about when a new palette or product comes out!!!! You are always such a great voice of reason!!!!!
I adore these types of videos! These are even better than anti-hauls because it really shows how similar some products can be, especially in application! I honestly prefer them to dupes videos (which I also love) because this helps me think more about what I already own rather than showing me a less expensive product i still might want to go out and purchase. Don’t get me wrong-I love your dupes videos-but I think both types of videos have value and I hope you continue to do a lot more of these!
Please create more of this type of video. Creates some essential balancing with the bulk of videos promoting purchasing products. Kudos to you for providing a consumer awareness segment to your programming. Heart hugs to you Emily.
Oh Emily, watching this I found myself compelled to buy the colourpop stone cold fox palette! The anti anti haul! But at least I did stop with just one additional liner...🤦♀️ and it's on sale right now...
The last year+ has totally changed the way I spend money... especially when it comes to makeup. I love the undertone of your channel. Mindfulness is something we ALL can benefit from. Keep em coming Em💜
Thanks for reminding me to look through my collection before getting anything. I am on a no makeup buy this year and this is making me feel better. Please do more videos like this! I find it super helpful!
For me it’s peachy-pink eyeshadow and blush. I have *so many* of them but they draw me in every time. I get the same basic look with all that I already have... but new ones make me 😍😍. But I don’t need any more!!
I LOVE this idea! I’d love for you to do another video similar to this. It’s very good advice (and a good wake up call) showing that we, in fact, do not need every new makeup launch. Well done!
Pink, purple, and mauve is my type whether it’s blush, eyeshadow, or lipstick. I’m a simple person that way but also tempted whenever something along those lines launches LOL
I love this idea! I get so excited to browse new products, but it’s refreshing to see enthusiasm to use what we already have in stead of buying the same thing over and over! More of this 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Emily is too polite to say that these companies are inspired and or copy one another! She is so smart and conscience with funds! Consumer's beware, love it!
I hope you make this a regular type of video series. I talk myself out of 90% of things I want by really looking at what I have and realizing that I already have the same or similar shade.
Yes, yes more of this type of video please!! I am constantly rethinking my cart load, lol. Usually I “save for later” and see if I can make do or if I really want/need it still a few days later. It’s also nice to know which brands have a superior formula so if I’m on a budget I can not waste my time and money on something that just looks similar.
Great video idea! You are so right. I have a dresser filled with makeup, hair care, skincare and styling tools. There are a few things I run across that are really unique to my collection, but those are dwindling. However I love your makeup collection. When your girls are older they can “shop” for their first makeup look in your collection and some of your PR. I can see you having so much fun together. 💙
I look at the Charlotte Tillbury products. I hear good things about the quality/texture, etc. But $75 is a chunka change and usually it's a neutral product and nothing I really consider unique. I just can't justify the price point when there are so many other more affordable options for something that isn't that different. Thank you for keeping it real for us, Em!
Emily!! I just ordered the Beauty Bakerie palette you always talk about. I’m so excited for it to arrive in the mail :) now that the mask mandates have loosened, I get to indulge in new face makeup!
Hi Emily! This will be a great series for you to continue to do. Go through the sites looking at what is "new" and compare it to what we already have....and need to use! Especially if we love something and it has been discontinued now...but the new different looking version is almost the same, in the case we need to replace what we already love. Love it!
Definitely would love to see more of this! It’s helping so much for my no buy. My biggest downfall that I’m always buying is comfortable lip colors. That benefit one looked sooo tempting!
Love this type of video. So important to stop and think before purchasing. We're all attracted to the same things over and over... loved this! Thank you for reminding us to spend wisely.
I love this video and would love to see more. Not only did you show us what you were interested in but also what could be bought or what might be in our stash that is super similar. So good. I think we all are into new stuff but we don't realize until we get it in our hands how it's so similar to things we have. Then we regret the buy because it cost so much when if we just took a moment to check our stuff we would have seen we have something that is the same or close enough to what we are interested in buying. This video is perfection
Love this idea, reminds me to look at what I already have. Thank you Em! Next time you talk to Pup, let her know I love my Emily and Cupcake print. I have gotten alot of compliments on it. Luv ya
Love love this video! This has me thinking about all my purchases and just has me checking what I already have instead of just buying. This helped me with my grocery order! Great video! Thanks Em!
I actually really appreciate the convenience & space saving /time saving ease of a well curated face palette. I have a couple that I can use all the shades & get my entire face done in one palette quickly. The problem with eye/face palettes for me is that I wear much darker neutral shades on my eyes than I do my face so those palettes never work for me. If I still have to pull in other palettes or singles, it defeats the purpose of convenience imo. So I'd rather have a separate face & eye palette of curated shades that work best for me. Yes, I appreciate these types of videos. We often buy the same thing over & over without realizing it. I had to stop purchasing lipstick because I ended up with 10 tubes of essentially the same pinky-nude shade once I swatched them & compared them side by side lol. Same with neutral warm eyeshadow palettes. Pretty sure I have enough of those until they start expirining & need replacing.
Emily, I love everything you do. I stopped watching a lot of beauty creators during quarantine, but I never stopped watching you because you give THE most down to earth advice and reviews. Oh and my weakness is lipstick. I must have 20 dusty mauve shades!!!
this is the best video idea! I would love if you did this same concept again as more launches come out! it's a nice reminder that we don't need everything new!
Fantastic idea Emily! I’ve been in “winding it back” mode myself recently too. Seems I do this with clothes I order as I’m drawn to certain styles and colors and with the lack of in store shopping experiences over the past year I would get twos of things. So embarrassing! Although I’m much older so I chalk it off to old age/old timers but it truly is being impulsive. Once you back up to give yourself a little extra time to consider the purchase (minutes ,hours, days) before you pull the trigger you make wiser/more informed choices. My soft spot in makeup is lipsticks, glosses and balms. Perhaps you could do a video like this with them in the future. Many thanks for such a timely reminder. 💖
I love these type of videos. I have been on a no makeup buy for probably 2 years. My bf has bought me a couple things and honestly, I didn’t love them! I want to get rid of them but I try to make it work! I get into moods when I want something new but realistically, I don’t wear makeup everyday and I don’t even play with makeup in my off time either. So it’s truly money wasted. I talk myself out of it all the time!
I buy stuff and forget about it more than I'd like to admit! Makeup and clothes! As far as makeup, eye shadow in all forms used to be my downfall. Now it is blush and lip products. I have way too much and will never use it all. My husband is close to retirement (probably) two more years and I've got to get over this need to keep buying the next new thing and enjoy what I already have. Thank you for bringing the issue to the forefront, Emily.
I live very frugally so I cannot be buying all the new releases that tempt me. We live in a tiny home (RV), so I have a cleaning caddy that houses my makeup collection. It works awesome as it has two divisions on one side, the other has none which I keep palettes in. I only buy what I absolutely love & use. My caddy is full, so if a product comes in, another has to go. I find if you have to much makeup it goes bad before it can be used up. When new releases tempt me, I do exactly what you just did in this video, I look through my caddy to see if I have similar and 9 times out of 10 I do. Thanks for another great video 🥰
I love this idea! I hope you continue to do these in the future! I myself have accumulated so many single eyeshadows that I love, I just "dupe the vibe" of new pallettes that catch my eye. I've saved so much over the last few years by doing that.
Would love to see this as a series! I’m always looking at the drugstore for a “dupe” before o buy a high end product. Now I need to look at home then the drugstore! Thanks!
I love it when you use products that have been around for awhile and are still available. I was so stoked when you used the original Lorac unzipped palette a little while back. I love that palette still and reach for it a few times a week. All these palettes that come out and some I own...yet I reach for the too faced chocolate bar and Lorac pro 2 palettes still the most. OGs...but nothing beats them.
I talked myself out of the new Natasha Denona Zendo pallete (quite a few times) when someone said it reminds them of Urban Decay Born to Run pallete. And I have that one, and love it. So I'm good. Until the next one anyway, lol.
Great idea! I really would like to see more about checking what we have, cost, quality... maybe some online meetings where we can interact with each other where we look at products. You make everything seem so easy... your confidence, poise & presentation are fabulous!
Omg it would be great if u made this into a series like once a month or every other month. It's different than anything I have seen but something I think so many people would not only enjoy but find truly helpful.
Such a great idea and I hope we'll get a part 2 😊 I'm broke AF and I miss buying makeup, but getting reminded that I might already have something very similar is very helpful 🙏
Fantastic idea! I have been stopping and looking at my current selection lately as well. I have a bit too much and never hit pan on anything before I grab more. Pandemic made me stop that trend and I plan to keep it
I loved the video and would appreciate more. It makes the reality of the fact that most products end up looking similar on the face more prevalent. I need to hear it!
This is one of my most favorite videos you have made! I am so glad to hear you reining yourself in and thinking before pushing the buy button. I needed this today, I think it’s applicable to everything from make up to relationships.
Emily, I am forever in this hamster wheel mindset anymore to the point where I almost feel the need to disengage with the beauty community for a short period of time to deprogram my brain. It sounds dramatic, but when I find myself spending this much time talking myself out of spending money that I don’t need to spend, it warrants a serious look at my collection. I watch a lot of Hannah Louise Poston when I’m in these moods. This video was much needed and you are not alone! PS, don’t beat yourself up too much over the Dior palette. TH-cam/makeup is your job as well as your passion, and we are all known to make a silly mistake at work every now and then ☺️💕
For me the ultimate temptations are new eyeshadow palettes that have sparkly shades and pops of lavender or mint, or new formulas of cream/liquid blushes!
Emmmmmm this video was sooooo fun! I hope you do more! I'm more and more wanting to use up my stuff rather than buy and buy and buy new stuff all the time. I'm getting overloaded! Love it, thank you so much 💕

I adore your videos Emily. I have been watching you since before your old pink room! I can’t say I watch every video but anytime I do you are so pleasant, kind and informative. Thank you for being such a light on TH-cam.♥️
I love multitasking pallets. They are my favorite makeup products.
I love this! I am a total believer that everything you own should really have a unique purpose. Not just consuming to consume.
The older I get, the less I want to acquire more things. I appreciate and use what I already have.

I think you mean environmentalist - a naturist is something very different hehe
I came to my senses and put it back
I looked at the color scheme of the Huda pallet and saw The Balm’s “Manizer” highlighter palette.
I can't thank you enough for all of the amazing uploads recently, Emily! You truly bring me (and countless others) so much joy.
I really enjoyed this. I appreciate how you make comparisons and help us save money, but still maintain your positive attitude. Thank you.
I felt this on so many levels, I’ve bought the same thing over and over again forgetting I already had it. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I’m so excited for it to arrive in the mail :) now that the mask mandates have loosened, I get to indulge in new face makeup!
love that palette!
Hi Emily! This will be a great series for you to continue to do. Go through the sites looking at what is "new" and compare it to what we already have....and need to use! Especially if we love something and it has been discontinued now...but the new different looking version is almost the same, in the case we need to replace what we already love. Love it!
Pretty in pink💖💖
Definitely would love to see more of this! It’s helping so much for my no buy. My biggest downfall that I’m always buying is comfortable lip colors. That benefit one looked sooo tempting!
I'd love to see a Needs edit volume 2! I'd love an "in from the cold" plum blush and a new selection of eyeshadows.
Love this type of video. So important to stop and think before purchasing. We're all attracted to the same things over and over... loved this! Thank you for reminding us to spend wisely.
It’s true! There’s so many things that overlap that if we step back a second and look we already have it! Thanks Emily!
Would love to see this more often!!! Helps me to use what I have and not buy buy buy! ☺️
Love this idea, reminds me to look at what I already have. Thank you Em! Next time you talk to Pup, let her know I love my Emily and Cupcake print. I have gotten alot of compliments on it. Luv ya
I'm always on the lookout for a multitasking palette that includes brow mattes for blondes. That keeps me trying new things that I already have.
This is such a valuable video!! It’s so hard to remember exactly what things you have especially if it’s things you use less. Thanks so much Emily!
Rum raisin such an iconic color. Loved this video, it really kept me interested.
The item that draws me in is a rose gold/warm palette and a rosy/bronzy blush esp the baked kind, i drool over all the Milani blushes every time!
I DO LOVE THIS IDEA! good reminder to use what we have and not waste what we don’t need.
Yes!!! Love this!! I’m a sucker for mauve tones! Over and over!!
I love this idea! I hope you continue to do these in the future! I myself have accumulated so many single eyeshadows that I love, I just "dupe the vibe" of new pallettes that catch my eye. I've saved so much over the last few years by doing that.
LOVED this video. What a great concept, not necessarily dupes, not an antihaul, just great alternatives we may already have.
Eyeshadow palettes with neutrals, golds n greens. Every time!
Such a great idea and I hope we'll get a part 2 😊
I'm broke AF and I miss buying makeup, but getting reminded that I might already have something very similar is very helpful 🙏
I would love to see a video of you trying to create looks people have made with the mentioned products with your dupes!
Seriously, this is why I follow you. I need people to remind me not to be wasteful with my money and time. You’re the best Em.
TH-cam/makeup is your job as well as your passion, and we are all known to make a silly mistake at work every now and then ☺️💕
So important to remember to look in those drawers. Thanks Emily as usual!!
