How to Adjust Air Fuel Mixture on a Mk1 VW Cabriolet

  • This video demonstrates checking and, if need be, adjusting your K-Jetronic-Lambda fuel injection system. I adjust the idle mixture on my 1988 VW Cabriolet which has CIS fuel injection. This would apply to most 80's VWs with CIS Lambda or K-Jetronic (Lambda) fuel injection.
    The CIS air/fuel mixture is measured using a dwell meter. I purchased an inexpensive unit from Harbor Freight:

      I wonder if this will fix my surging idle, it climbs and lowers, I’ve verified almost all vacuum leaks.

    Great video! So my rabbit feels like its very rich. It had a vacuum leak and I repaired it but it still under load will missfire out of the exhaust when on a load. i put the meter on it and it reads 6. I go to adjust the CO and when I just touch the adjuster to turn it the car dies. If I get a little bit of adjustment with out it stalling out it will stay at 6 6.3 I cant get it to move off that number no mater what I do.

    The cis system im using is adapted to another vehicle. What does the test port connect to? Is it the o2 sensor, the mixture solenoid or something different?

    I just watched your vid [again] and wondered if this Dwell Adjustment works only on K-Jet, or if I could do the same on my '86 Cabriolet CIS? Don't necessarily want to spend $50 on a Dwell Meter if it's not going to read accurately. It's close to original, added only a g-grind cam, and I have the little tester dongle you thoroughly described. Thanks!
    P.S. Hope the shop relocate goes smoothly...

      CIS = K-Jetronic
      All 1980-1989 North American Cabriolets using K-Jetronic with lambda will have the test port for checking & adjusting the system's duty cycle, including your '86. Go to the Cabby-Info.com link in the video description for complete information.

    Hi, would you maybe know if this setting isnt in thr 45s if it has anything to do with my engine not being able to start?

      I don't think the frequency valve would really affect starting.....more just the idle. What are your numbers? A lower duty cycle results in a leaner the mixture and a higher number results in a rich mixture.

    Thanks for the video. I did a 1985 cor a customer. But he has a 1980. And I can't find the same plug the 1985 has. Any idea where it is on a 1980?

    Beautiful subject. All who have CIS engines are mostly left on their own as there is no professional service for so old cars, maybe somwhere in Germany, maybe only. This video is great, but not clearly illustrated where that test cable is or if there is no such to find what are the options to look for certain contacts elsewhere under the hood. This is a problem. Who reads all text given, the confusion raises, 45 degrees must not be for all models and then what, how to know values for my model? Ups! I bought Multimeter with dwell after this video and then found out that CIS with 8 valves doesn't have control cable left for testing. CIS is a complicated set of parts, where if one is not perfect nothing will be good, shortly, a car to drive near home as anything can stop at any moment, unfortunately bit old and difficult.

    Any idea on what the psi of each injector should be at at full open? Also what the cc rating would be per min?

      Opening injector pressure is 46.4 to 55.11 psi. Injector flow rate is dependent on fuel distributor and CPR. This site has the flow rates of every injector listed by part number: users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm

      Press the (hold) button on the meter and should be on 90.0

    My cabriolet is not working properly, I have been trying these steps for several days and it does not work for me. Could anybody help me? I connect my millimeter and it reads 89.9, so when I start the vehicle automatically the millimeter reads 00.0 and doesn't change from there. What could it be? Is it that the air mixture does not work in the car? How can I fix it? I don't think is the milímeter because is brand New. Any help will be appreciate it, thanks in advanced.

      Test your frequency valve. The frequency valve's duty cycle is measured on a 0 to 100% scale. If the duty cycle is at 50%, this means the frequency valve is open 50% of the time, and closed 50% of the time. Conveniently, the duty cycle can be measured with a dwell meter set to the 4-cylinder scale; the example 50% duty cycle corresponds to 45° dwell (100% being 90°).
      To test your frequency valve, you will need a DVOM and test light, along with a relay jumper wire. If the valve is not buzzing and/or vibrating (remember, that's what it should be doing!), follow these steps:
      1 - Disconnect the frequency valve's harness connector.
      2 - Measure resistance across the valve's terminals. Resistance should be 2 to 3 ohms. Yes: Valve is fine, continue testing. No: Valve is faulty and should be replaced.
      3 - Remove the fuel pump relay and jump terminal positions 30 and 87.
      4 - Using your test light, probe the frequency valve's harness connector terminals. Your light should shine. No: Check the fuel pump fuse, fuel injection power supply relay (there should be power going to the Jetronic control unit; see pin-outs below), wiring between all of these components, and all associated ground connections.

    why not fit a wideband lamba sensor and actually measure the air fuel ratio?
