Beating EVERY N64 Game - Gauntlet Legends (124/394)

- Gauntlet was probably my favorite game series from Midway. I have to wonder how this series could have gone if it continued into the current day. Dungeon crawlers are certainly rare on this console, so let's dive into Gauntlet Legends.

Oh hey, if you're wondering what the growth item does, it basically just makes you insta kill small enemies like scorpions or rats with physical attacks. Some items have really obscure abilities so it's normal not to understand them without some research.
This game is well over 20 years old now and my brother and I will still randomly say “food is good!” to each other. This was one of my favorite games growing up and was anticipating for this video in the series!
hahahah no frickin' way, my brother and I do that too!!
Seems to be a reoccurring theme because so do me and my bro
WARRIOR NEEDS FOOD BADLY!!
"I Like Food!"
Me and my brother used to the do the “Mmmmm” when the males ate. Sounded funny as hell.
There was something magical about games like this in the pre-internet-walkthrough era. Running around with your friends, lookin for secrets (half of which your friend Tommy made up in their entirety), checking every nook & cranny, trying every conceivable option to get past the spot that you've been stuck at for 3 months. I miss that "mysterious aura" that came with not being able to look things up. It wasn't _really_ important whether there was actually a Mew under that truck.. I think on some level, we all knew there probably wasn't. But it didn't matter, because the exciting part is that *there might be!* Everything was unknown and new and fascinating and oh how I miss it.
Maybe that's just growing up, idk 🤷♂
Our relationship with games have definitely changed. The instant access to Wikis, games having all their secrets data mined within a week of release, and hundreds of thousands if not millions of people contributing to the discourse online instead of just rumor-mongering with people you know in real life.
I think games today still have plenty of mystery, they unfortunately just exist in a world where that mystery is rendered inert within a week.
Thank God for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom; we'll be seeing people do new things in those games for years.
I have a very specific memory of this game: when I was a kid, maybe like 6-7 years old, my older cousin would invite me to his sleepovers with his friends and they would play this. Since they knew what they were doing, they would always pick the better characters and they would make me be the arrow girl (which, having been a 6 year old sucked because girls were gross ew). For about 5 play sessions I had to be that arrow girl and I was getting obliterated every time, and I thought that it was due to me being that character (not being a small child with no skills). So one day, I woke up early and did 1p mode with the wizard and, to my surprise, I still got obliterated. On top of that, my grandmother came over and started scolding me for playing a video game instead of going to church while I was getting killed by a witch, and it was an incredibly humbling experience. I still never beat this game, so it was nice to finally have a conclusion to this 23 year saga.
Girls are still gross, let's be honest
I hope you got to your senses and youre not going to church anymore
The phrase “Red Warrior needs food badly!” Has been forever engrained within my mind by this game. I’ll still say it on occasion when I’m hungry.
Tengen/Atari managed to get those iconic voice clips from the original arcade cabinet into the unlicensed NES cartridges (but not the official ones).
My friend and I used to play this game religiously back in the day. To this day when we get the families together for a cookout we'll go back and forth with "Ah... Sustenance" and "Food is good!"
"You are very greedy."
epic lol....
Made a lifelong friend about a decade ago by eating leg of chicken going "OOM NOM OM CHOM PFTT!"
I'm pretty sure I played an arcade version of Gauntlet Legends, but your health kept ticking down to get people to spend lots of quarters. When I realized the N64 game didn't have your health constantly depleting I felt robbed :P
Home versions in general I think didn't have time based health depletion. And then the various Nintendo iterations (Both this one and the Gamecube one which has these levels, plus an expanded suite) allowed you to toggle items on/off, so you could grab a time limited halo and save it for a death on a different map.
And that, is one of many reasons this game and its sequel was so popular on N64 and later, Dreamcast. The perks of feeling like you were playing an Arcade game, all at home to yourself.
every mame console I gamble on never has it.
I still say “green wizard is about to die” whenever anyone is losing/about to lose literally any activity to this day
I say "Yellow Minotaur is about to die" in my head when something like that happens. I'm not brave enough to say it aloud.
I still say "Yellow archer needs food badly" when I'm very hungry.
Same, except “blue wizard” lol
I still say yellow wizard needs food badly!
Your colors are all wrong, haha
This was my absolute favorite game as a kid. My dad, mom and sister and I would all play together. Memories I’ll never let go of.
I was waiting for this one, this was one of my favorites growing up. We even played into high school on our all night gaming adventures when we took a break from Halo.
You can pretty much cheese the entire game with the wizard’s turbo 2 move, “rock shower”. Just dump all stat points into magic and it clears the screen every time, including 1-hitting bosses. I’m not sure if anyone speedruns this game, but I feel like that would be the way to do it.
I tried speedrunning this game once when I was younger, but I ended up giving up because I would...
1. Go insane from my character being too slow
2. Rage quit because I accidently forgot to hit a switch that's on the other side of the level
3. Just straight up dying
The OG move in Dark Legacy was grinding the Spider Queen boss. She wasn’t that difficult to kill and gave a huge payout so you could max your stats and recover before difficult stages/bosses. So much fun.
Damn that takes me back
@@krossbow_ right?? By traditional standards Dark Legacy was not “difficult” but you could throw so many hours into it with a group of friends.
this game is such a nostalgia trip to me. One of my favorite games on the N64, played so much growing up. I miss those days.
"Needs food badly" and "Is about to die" are forever ingrained to memory
This was amazing to play with friends growing up.
I never had the multiplayer experience for this game. I feel like you'd end up fighting over every item you find.
Amazing?! You mean you didn’t beat your friend to death with a N64 controller because they kept stealing all the food and treasure?
@@pokeli2728 Oh that is 80% of the fun of it ;)
@@pokeli2728we would see who won the most gold each match and then slowly our levels would drift off because he would play his character more
Gauntlet on n64 is a classic like you said, loved watching this episode. The trick to to get every special weapon which basically wipes out most of the bosses health before you start fighting them
The arcade version of this was so legit. One of the best 90's console machines for sure.
It let you type in a 3 character name on those machines, so you could save your progress for later!
Awesome
@@Atylonisus Being able to save your own character on a public arcade machine was surprisingly cool, I spent way too much money trying to get my dude to be the strongest in the movie theater where they had this machine :D
@Atylonisus there was this unspoken agreement passed down by hushed whispers between friends. There was a 3-letter name for every color that we all leveled.
Yellow AAA was a busted wizard
I think Blue BOB was a decent warrior
And those are the two I remember.
This game was a huge part of my childhood. Going over to my friends house and playing it with his older brother and friend, such a fun game
I had one buddy who was really good at picking up all the loot and his character was slightly faster it always pissed me off.
I had one buddy who was really good at picking up all the loot and his character was slightly faster it always pissed me off.
For anyone who doesn’t know, “Dark Legacy” is a sequel to Gauntlet Legends. “Dark Legacy” is still to this day on my top five favorite games of all time. Such a masterpiece. I can’t tell you all how many times I played through these games.
It could really use a port/remake to give us a definitive version. GameCube had 4 players but ran poorly. PS2 was stuck at 2 but ran well. Xbox didn't run great.
@@chrismdb5686 Surprised the gameCube struggled as even the N64 had 4-player multiplayer of the base game don't forget Dark Legacy was just an expansion to Legends.
@@wizzgamer I'm no expert nor do I have insider knowledge, but it's speculated that the port was just very poorly optimized and that's what caused issues. The GameCube has better specs than both the N64 and PS2, so it should have ran without a hitch.
Definite childhood game which just ROCKED the house down. Absolutely godlike with snacks, drinks, and 4 controllers.
Yep...this and WCW/WWF games.
Best sleepovers
Once again the thumbnail creator absolutely smashing it for this challenge lmao
Go into the dragon with rock shower charged and you can farm it for xp. Rock shower's damage is bananas due to the way it registers.
Sank so many hours into this game. Absolutely love it.
The best gauntlet game. I wish they had made the newest one like this, and not just a path tree. It was basically an open world feel to the overworld
Love this game. My brother and I spent 16 hours one day listening to music and just slowly working our way through this game. He as the red warrior and myself as the yellow wizard. Even got to the level cap. That was a fun saturday.
The tier 2 wizard ability was an oversight of how it worked vs large hit boxes. The scroll in world 3 is on a lower platform you raise by hitting a switch.
I have been waiting for this episode since this series started. Gauntlet Legends is one of my all time favorite games ever. I only wish the video was longer but I still loved every second of this video. I hope this game comes to the switch online thing so I can play it with friends. I've only ever played in single player and have been wanting to see what it's like with 4 people my entire life.
This series is the best thing on TH-cam…thank you so much!
Thorough and well made reviews for every game on the console is a legitimate asset to the retro community. Plus they're just entertaining
The pure surprise of thab from every single random number generation is just top tier comedy at this point lol
I love this channel. Still catching up with the playlist every day :)
When I was 5 my older brother and his friends would play this game till the point where they couldn't continue, then just let me farm on easier levels over and over again to level up. I loved being an exp grinder because I felt like part of the team!
That’s very adorable
Iconic to anyone who played it. My brother, my best friend, and his best friend played through this, and the later sequals on future gens with 4 player co-op. This game was a Blockbuster rental over several late 90s, early 00s weekends.
I play through this game every few years. A solid remaster with online coop would be fantastic.
"I don't know how you're supposed to dodge his attacks, it's not like you can block or anything."
Of course not! Remember, Gauntlet Legends was an arcade game, and farming health in the console game was putting more quarters into the arcade game. A boss like Skorne was made to just attack constantly and drain your health in short order because it would be more effective at getting the quarters. It should be no surprise that it happens so late in the game either; at that point the sunk cost fallacy kicks in and you're thinking "okay well a few more quarters and I can surely beat him, and that'll be the end of the game!" it should probably be no further surprise that there's a pretty significant portion left after Skorne, including a second Skorne fight, because each time is meant to make you think "okay no surely THIS is the end".
Anyway, it's great to hear that you liked the game! I played this and Dark Legacy a ton back in the day and it's always a treat to see a game I used to love actually being good rather than my childhood brain just playing bad games and thinking they're good.
My favorite thing about these weekly videos is you picking the next game. You read the number of the next game and then say “what’s that!?” And I always laugh and smile. 😂
This was one of my favorites as a kid! Can’t wait to watch
You've only scratched the surface of this game you've not come close and truly beating it yet. There are bonus characters alternate endings it is an amazing game definitely worth a revisit when your bored
12:15 one of the twitch commenters mentioned a mall that I frequent VERY often as I live pretty freaking close to it. I'm glad to see someone else mention it.
12:07 This scroll is floating above a floor that has to be raised with a switch somewhere in the level. without that you can't grab it. I only know that because I love this game lol. It's basically impossible to tell why you can't grab it on your own without knowing that, cause the camera angle.
Thab's video thumbnails are the only thumbnails that actually get a chuckle out of me. Whoever makes them, good job.
I have been waiting for this along with Quest 64. Thank you!
So happy to hear that you have a back log
I look forward to these every Friday
I played this game with my cousins for HOURS back in the day. So fun to see it finally pop up in this challenge!
Great video, i bet by the time i watched the next one this series will already be done and just have YT vods being a year behind with my luck
That Yeti animation was unironically really smooth and cool. Congrats Midway!
Always look forward to a fresh Thab on a Friday.
Younger than me, i remember first playing this in the Arcade. For the longest time i thought the announcer was saying "What POWER!" when you used the Lvl 2 Special for the wizard (It's actually "Rock Shower!")
One of my favorite games of all-time. I own the Dreamcast version, the N64 version, the PS2 version, the Xbox version, and even the abysmal GBA version. I regularly go back to various versions because they all have little differences and I’ll get sucked in for hours at a time. I have a MAME cab too, but I’d love to own an actual Legends or Dark Legacy cab someday.
My friends and I played this game SO MUCH. We really need either a remake or a brand new sequel
A remake of this game would need to have online multiplayer in it.
This game looks amazing! Great video and narration.
I want to say thank you.
This video gives me great memories of being a child.
The only game my dad would play With Me..
I miss that man.
YES FINALLY! Been waiting for you to play this one love the content thab
If you replay the first level and grind your stats up to %100 before you continue the games difficulty is increased massively making it a lot more fun since the enemies change and upgrade as your stats do
So you'll know, the giant potion does a couple things, it increases the arc of your attack, so you hit more smaller enemies in front of you, it also prevents you from staggering while making it easier to stagger the enemies, and finally it works best with your "forward auto attack", so when you just press forward towards enemies and start auto attacking, it does just a little more damage. It's not good against bigger or more powerful enemies though...
I wish you went over the secret characters a bit. I'm so curious lol
This was a game my brother and I played all the time. I loved this game. For the archer's special, the announcer would say "B..F..G"
I remember this game in the arcade. It had a dial pad where you could save your character and what not.
This is one of those games that I would have played nonstop as a kid if I would have known about it. Gonna have to pick it up one day for sure 🤙
Killer thumbnail, Thab! Love it!
My friend and I growing up used to play this game SO MUCH. The Gauntlet games are best played with friends. We mustve beaten that red mountain level and its dragon boss a hundred times to farm for items later on.
The Gamecube one was AMAZING AS WELL (also farmed that level lol). But these games are by far and large best enjoyed with another person.
been waiting for this one. I rented this back in the day and my best friend and i played it for an entire weekend. those were good times.
if I recall correctly, if you hold Z and press B you can use your potions to make a shield around you. That's how you defend yourself against some boss attacks
I just used shields to mow down hordes of enemies. I'd have to try this, thanks.
Two of my brother, a friend, and I must have beat this game 10 times back in the day. It's probably the last game my brother and I played together in the same room (before the online gen arrived and we only played over the web). Not that we knew it at the time. This game was peak co-op multiplayer on the N64.
Been waiting for this one!
This was a great game for its time. Definitely glad to see you playing it.
"Use cheese to open doors and chests" my brothers and I played this game for more hours than I could hope to count. Amazing game.
guantlet legends was so damn fun back in the day, and looking back it was hilarious playing 4 player co-op with people trying to run seperate ways
I just heard the nature of your challenge and I am instantly hooked. Subscribed.
I am sure it was already pointed out, but this game was just the precursor to Dark Legacy. All levels found in this game are in Dark Legacy as well as 4 additional levels. The obelisks change into collecting shards, ect...
I remember played the hell out of this game in the arcade, back in highs school.
Must’ve put $50+ into that game before the place closed down.
When Dark Legacy came out, me and my friend Clint maxed out some of the secret characters.
Everytime I watch Thab's videos in this series I get mad nostalgia. The good old days of going to Hollywood Video or Blockbuster and renting a new game. Great series!
My little brother and I loved that game and Dark Legacy. Good ol' couch coop game. Some songs pop in my head from time to time.
I think of this game often.this is so old school.i was lucky to have 2 older bros and we'd play alot.good times.thanks for that trip down memory lane
A lot of people don't know that Gauntlet Legends was a reboot of a 1980s dungeon crawler called Gauntlet. It was an amazing game back then too.
Was waiting for this one. Top 5 games of all time for me
One of my favorite games on N64. Thanks for playing it!
The wizard's level 2 turbo attack hits multiple times, unlike most (all?) other turbo attacks in the game, which only hit once. I think the insane damage output was a programming oversight, where the amount of damage assigned to each hit is the amount that was intended for the entire attack to do if it were to hit only once, but since it hits multiple it's like doing multiple turbo attacks in rapid succession. The wizard's high AOE damage output from rock shower and potions/magic make him the best choice for solo and probably the best starting class in the game.
Very fond memories of playing this one as a kid
Man what a good game, we would play this with 4 players back in the day.
God I played hundreds of hours of this game with friends. This was such a staple of my childhood.
Used to play this game so much...I never beat it because I didn't have the pack to save, but once at a sleepover we kept it running for the entire night and tried to get through it the next day, didn't happen because parent came in, saw it on, turned it off xD
I don't have the save pack for this game either. I remember me and my friends would basically Speedrun the game to get back to where we left off. Only downside is that we were incredibly under leveled and had terrible stats.
Those tentacles sticking through the grates are giving me Deadly Towers flashbacks.
I haven't played this one but Gauntlet 2 was one of my favorite games as a kid.
I had a blast playing this game with my cousins when I was a kid. When I played, I used to spend all the gold I earned with permanent upgrades. Soon enough I was carrying the whole group...
I loved this freaking game. We would play it freshmen year in college with my roommates. So much fun.
I also loved so much seeing the gold and xp show up physically on screen after each level. So satisying
This game was the GOAT for co-op gameplay back in the day, hoooooly cow one friend of mine owned this and we had so much fun
absolutely loved this game, and never beat it, so great to watch you knock it out!!!
This was my favorite game and Stunt Race 64 is also in my top 10 N64 games! What a great follow up!
What's good Fam. I have been watching your channel for 2 years now. One day I'll make it to one of your streams. This game in particular I remember was hardest game or in fact the longest, I beat as a kid. It took a year or two at the time. I finally did another playthrough on my channel, but I decided to do the Dreamcast version instead of the Nintendo 64 version. I'm interested in the Dark legacy from what I heard you say that it has a little bit more polish and I've seen that it has a little bit more content as well. Anyway please don't stop 🙏🏿 your an inspiration to not only me to to all who watch your content.
I love both this game on the N64, and the sequel Dark Legacy on PS2. Beaten both many, many times. One of my favorite games on either console.
I rented this so much as a kid, finally bought it as an adult and i still fire it up occasionally. Solid title!
at 04:20 it's pretty cool to see them do a throwback to the original Gauntlet games with the top down view. Reminds me of the 2D throwbacks in Super Mario Odyssey.
Thab hates dark effects in SMM2 but lauds dark effect in Gauntlet Legends. The dichotomy of Thab.
"Yellow wizard needs food badly!" is how I tell my wife we should start on dinner.
Blue wizard nice!
Loved playing this with my brother
My go to was the green archer
Bananas in the treasury? This is Donkey Kong.
I had so much fun with my two brothers and a friend playing this game all those many years ago!
Nice one of the few games I am or now was looking forward too. This game was amazing
Never played this one but it's on my list! Thumbs Up!
You can kill that dragon instantly with the wizard's rock shower. Heh... you were so excited for the cheese.
I miss my N64, to be a kid again in that era 😢
This game was fantastic
