This games probably 5 out of 10 on metacritic but when you're 6 years old, you get one game a year off your grandma and 48 hours to play it under the covers on the weekend - it's the best thing since sliced bread.
This is also one of those games (especially ps1 ver) where the soundtrack is way better than it deserves to be for the game that it is. Not just talking the MI theme but all the level tracks are great.
This is honestly a vibe I really appreciate from this project. Playing all the N64 games with one another really puts them in context, and it feels a lot easier to give barely above average ones their due when normally pretty much every N64 game outside the top 10% or so gets pretty ignored these days. Even with the good ones it seems standard to lead off with "the graphics have aged like milk but..."

That's the thing that Goldeneye did so well, and why its single player campaign was so damn good. I've still never played it...The N64 is the console i am most nostalgic for, and despite what a lot of people say these days, I think its game library still holds up.
"How do I know what to improve on if I don't even know why I failed?" That pretty much summarizes this game up when I played it as a kid. Also a good metaphor for life.
Yeah. There's so many specific, unique mechanics for each level that you practically have to be in the game designers head to know what to do. You couldn't really use your knowledge of how to play other games to get through this game, at least not at the time. It did so many things other games weren't doing, you didn't even know to look for them. If anything it was too ahead of its time, trying to be more complex than was really practical at the time.
@@turntsnaco824 You don't "have to be in the game designers head to know what to do." You have to think like an IMF agent and devise countermeasures for even the most unlikely scenarios to stay well ahead of your opponents, and that right there is the core of Mission: Impossible. When I learn the solution to an obstacle in the game, I can go, "Oh, yeah. Obviously. That makes sense to me." The answers may not always be apparent from the start, but if enough thought is put into them, they're perfectly logical in the grand scheme of things. Just because "it did so many things other games weren't doing" doesn't make those things a problem. Games should be judged on their own merits. It wasn't "too ahead of its time, trying to be more complex than was really practical at the time." I actually love this game! It's got problems but me and my friends played it all the time growing up. Just a couple quick things! 21:50 the part where you have to have Jim Phelps take you to the elevator, you were suppose to find an empty regular gun to point at him. The line "That dart gun doesn't scare me!" was the hint. Also 32:53 when you said you can't move the sniper. There are actually two snipers you can switch between. Yeah this game really is all trial and error. You aren't suppose to know how to do everything your first time. You did great!
(21:50) You can find an unloaded gun in the level that you're supposed to use to coerce Phelps into letting you into the elevator. He even says "that dart gun doesn't scare me" earlier. (23:55) The patient bed you passed several times also has a big red button. If you push that after throwing the guy off the treadmill, the bed lifts up under the ceiling, creating enough distraction for you to safely go out the window without relying on luck. (25:25) Of course they arrest a repairman with a gun in hand. If you had put that away, they'd let you in unbothered. (28:24) Phelps returns to the room regularly. If you wait at a safe altitude where he doesn't notice you when he comes in the first time, you have much more time to perform the swinging shenanigans. (32:24) The gunwoman ducked in that moment and you actually shot the civilian behind. (32:47) When Ethan is out of sight behind the sights, you can switch to the second sniper who has a better view. You mentioned yourself in the beginning that there would be TWO snipers coming along.
Played this game on repeat as a kid. Tried to jump back into it a couple years back and was shocked on how janky the controls were. Still, holds a lot of memories for me.
My cousin had this game as a kid and we both loved it and played the hell out of it. It was the first game of this type I ever played and although I realise it has aged pretty poorly I will always have a fond place in my heart for it. We used to take turns whenever one of us failed or died and I still remember how great it felt to beat it.
Your realization is incorrect, because saying that something "has aged pretty poorly" is a detracting and superficial way of pointing out its age, a factor which should not be considered an imperfection. You're essentially saying that it's too indicative of its time to be good, which is just ridiculous.
Ohhh one of my favorites growing up. It was kind of hard if I remember. As a kid my problem was the same as the one you had earlier. No idea what I had to do. I did end up beating it like all the other games I had as a kid....I was nothing if not persistant.persistent. Hearing him call it the N-O-C list was slightly triggering. It's called the NOC list, pronounced 'Knock List' everytime it is referenced in the movie.
Thsi game brings me so much memories: I remember when I was really young I made a Christmas gift list I wanted from Santa, and the list was basically comprised of the best (and most expensive) N64 games, stuff like both Zeldas, Conker's Bad Fur Day and all of that good stuff. I was young so I still thought that Santa was real and I had no concept of the meaning of "money" so I asked for all of this stuff. I'm from Brazil and not from a rich family or anything, so the only game my parents could afford was this one. I won't lie and say I wasn't a bit sad and disappointed for not getting any of the games I wanted, but looking back, I'm so thankful for my parents, they worked their asses off to be able to buy me this game. But even though it wasn't any of the games I wanted, it was still a new game for my N64, so I was excited for it! I started playing as soon as I could and honestly had quite a lot of fun with it, even though I couldn't understand a single thing written/said in it and I'd never seen the movie. I was never able to beat it, I remember being stuck in that poison tunnel section and never getting past it. Anyway, I'm happy to see you playing! Haven't watched the video yet but I'm excited to see if it's any good as I remember it and it might even make me give it a try once again!
@@Dadbot That's so cool, DK64 is amazing! I actually got my N64 in a previous Christmas as well and, lucky for me, it was my uncle's, so he gave me all of his games as well for me to play with my brother! It was the first game I've ever even booted on the N64 and it's been my favorite game of all time ever since. I'm so glad that a lot of us have so many great memories with the N64!
The old man 'Way to go!" voice has lived in my brain rent free since 1999, was never sure if it was meant to be someone over the radio or Ethan himself I remember having to cheese that rooftop mission by jumping over the lasers when I rented this back in the day, remember that section feeling so janky and having to try a bunch of times to progress
Same here. It was the first time I got to know about regional copies, because the old man said "sauber!" out of nowhere (which translates to "clean!" from german). Confused the hell outta me back then.
You'd have no way of knowing this without having seen the movie, but they call it the "knock list" in the movie to make references to it less unwieldy.
I absolutely loved this game when I was a kid. Every level has so many objectives. You really have to use your brain to figure out how to beat the missions. Sure the controls are pretty rough. The platforming and combat really don't work, but if you can see past that, there's a really solid puzzle/spy game underneath.
I used to love this game. The level where you have to disguise yourself and plant the things in the vents to evacuate the building was ahead of its time. Loved the game.
This game was literally quite ahead of its time in terms of gameplay also the soundtrack was a banger. The story campaign was decent but honestly it's what lacked a bit
I absolutely loved this game. Rented it from blockbuster when it came out and played it for like 30 hours straight over the weekend lol (i didnt have a memory card so i couldnt turn the 64 off without losing all my progress.) I remember absolutely hating the level where Ethan has to slide down the rope to the computer. When i finished it I thought, "thank god I never have to play that again". Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I got about halfway through (embassy level i believe) when I was about 10 or 11 and could NOT figure out how to go further. So funny how I can now see how it ends!
Definitely ahead of it's time, I rented this one a few times back in the day. I couldn't make it very far, but that was ok because I could play all the missions on someone else's save. Good memories.
I loved this game back in the day. Watching this playthrough unlocked a bunch of memories I had forgotten. I remember parts of every level, though I doubt I actually beat the game so I must have cheated or something haha
This was one that I definitely had a lot of fun with, despite its shortcomings. I thought that the scenes of Ethan dragging unconscious bodies into the stalls were the funniest.
As I always say, critics are always wrong. I personally love Bubsy 3D (I'd give it a 9.5/10 and really recommend it although I reckon tank controls are not for everyone), and you know how critics treated THAT one... Always give every game a chance, regardless of critic scores.
I used to love this game. A friend of mine had it for the playstation and I'd always borrow it from him. And the new Hitman games also remind me of this
This game was all over the place at the time it was released. People said it was a disappointment but I and a lot of kids back then enjoyed it! With a strategy guide I really liked it
I remember playing this at a cousin's house and being happy when I realized most of it was an alternate universe version of the first movie's story until I realized my least favorite part of the movie's plot was kept.
In the original Mission Impossible TV show, there was a character who was an expert at impersonation, including creating masks. That’s probably where they got the inspiration for the face-copying device.
Love the way you say helly-copters ❤ thab, you are a heckin hero. Please go back to saying “[rng determined number] what the HECK is that?” For some reason the heck really completes the vibe just right 😅
I had borrowed goldeneye from a buddy in highschool but return it to him after playing it non-stop and loving it. My girlfriend knew i loved it so she bought me Mission Impossible for my birthday thinking it would be a similar game. She thought i already owned goldeneye. I really tried to get into this game and beat more levels than i wanted to out of a feeling of obligation. Ended up selling it
I remember playing this game a bunch when I was younger, the sniper section in the train station was cool but I always ran into issues when Ethan went behind the sign and needed help. Turns out THERE'S A SECOND SNIPER YOU CAN SWITCH TO IN A DIFFERENT SPOT
Play through would of been much easier if you actually used the map in the top right where it shows the enemies. You have to time your actions when they aren’t close and can’t just “run and gun” it.
Dang I played this game a lot when I was pretty young. I couldn't understand english back then so every mission was literally just trial and error. I loved it.
I loved this game as a kid but I could never beat it so I used a lot of cheat codes which made the game even more fun. Goofing around in levels and trying to find fun ways to fail missions was great.
@@Thabeast721 Aha, thanks for the reply, dude. Yeah, AVGN actually disappointed me a bit when he said the graphics in Majora's Mask "look like sh**". I mean, really? If you emulate the higher res versions now especially, they still look awesome in their own unique cartoony yet earthy way. And that from a guy who lauds flat 16-bit graphics so highly (I love a lot of those too). I grew up on 16-bit and primitive Acorn then PC games. Mario 64 blew my mind when it came out, the first time I'd seen a proper 3D game and it was so imaginative and fun. There were plenty of other nostalgic and super fun games, but then came Ocarina of Time. That was then not really just a game for me, it was almost more like a spiritual experience, and I got completely lost and absorbed in that graphical world. I think it was not having the internet so knowing only the snippets in N64 Magazine, being 12 and getting it on Christmas Day. That was gaming and storytelling creativity off the charts, rich with subtextual messages and lessons on life, nature, childhood, challenges, love, loss and death.
I enjoyed this game as a kid for the most part, except for the level on the outside of the building and one other section. Biggest issue with the game is lack of ammunition for the guns which make certain areas super difficult.
I absolutely adored this game, fully knowing that it had a fair amount of shortcomings. The music was incredible. Once you understand the puzzle element, the game is very easy to beat. I ended up doing personal speed runs with the cartridge, while looking for a good number of random glitches. You came across several. My personal favorite is when the piano music for the pianist fails to load properly. You get this backwards sounding out of time tune in the same vein.
I spent hours killing everyone on the floor. You can shoot the piano player and the music just stops. Lots of cool little things you can do in that piano level

The line "That dart gun doesn't scare me!" was the hint. Also 32:53 when you said you can't move the sniper. There are actually two snipers you can switch between. Yeah this game really is all trial and error. You aren't suppose to know how to do everything your first time. You did great!
This game was a huge part of my childhood. Nice to see it again.
But they're not "janky," so your shock is in vain.
So close to the 100th game! This is a great series!
The 100th game is an absolute banger, I'm really looking forward to it
Thsi game brings me so much memories: I remember when I was really young I made a Christmas gift list I wanted from Santa, and the list was basically comprised of the best (and most expensive) N64 games, stuff like both Zeldas, Conker's Bad Fur Day and all of that good stuff.
Thanks for the story! Reminds me of the one Christmas I got DK 64.
@@Dadbot That's so cool, DK64 is amazing! I actually got my N64 in a previous Christmas as well and, lucky for me, it was my uncle's, so he gave me all of his games as well for me to play with my brother! Some original games and some not-so-original lol. But, I had Banjo-Kazooie, and even if that was the only game I got, I'd still be REALLY happy! It was the first game I've ever even booted on the N64 and it's been my favorite game of all time ever since. I'm so glad that a lot of us have so many great memories with the N64!
The old man 'Way to go!" voice has lived in my brain rent free since 1999, was never sure if it was meant to be someone over the radio or Ethan himself
I remember having to cheese that rooftop mission by jumping over the lasers when I rented this back in the day, remember that section feeling so janky and having to try a bunch of times to progress
Same here. It was the first time I got to know about regional copies, because the old man said "sauber!" out of nowhere (which translates to "clean!" from german). Confused the hell outta me back then.
"remember that section feeling so janky"
That section?? That entire game was the very definition of janky.
You'd have no way of knowing this without having seen the movie, but they call it the "knock list" in the movie to make references to it less unwieldy.
And he would have no way of knowning the exact pronunciation of Golitsysn.. “GO-LIT-SIN”
I absolutely loved this game when I was a kid. Every level has so many objectives. You really have to use your brain to figure out how to beat the missions. Sure the controls are pretty rough. The platforming and combat really don't work, but if you can see past that, there's a really solid puzzle/spy game underneath.
Used to LOVE this game as a kid. The first two missions were the best. Difficulty is certainly unfair at points but with a guide it’s a great time
I used to love this game. The level where you have to disguise yourself and plant the things in the vents to evacuate the building was ahead of its time. Loved the game.
One of my favorite rentals ever! Up there with Bulls Vs Blazers on NES.
Goldeneye/Perfect Dark yadda yadda, but Mission Impossible tried to do the open-ended "sandbox" level design and when it worked it was beautiful
This game was literally quite ahead of its time in terms of gameplay also the soundtrack was a banger. The story campaign was decent but honestly it's what lacked a bit
I actually liked this game as a kid, it was frustrating as fuuuuuuuuu…
Fungus? Fuselage? Furon Empire?
I absolutely loved this game. Rented it from blockbuster when it came out and played it for like 30 hours straight over the weekend lol (i didnt have a memory card so i couldnt turn the 64 off without losing all my progress.) I remember absolutely hating the level where Ethan has to slide down the rope to the computer. When i finished it I thought, "thank god I never have to play that again". Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
I got about halfway through (embassy level i believe) when I was about 10 or 11 and could NOT figure out how to go further. So funny how I can now see how it ends!
I loved this game as a kid. Put countless hours into it. This video brought me back!
Definitely ahead of it's time, I rented this one a few times back in the day. I couldn't make it very far, but that was ok because I could play all the missions on someone else's save. Good memories.
It keeps being so close to mischief makers...
underrated masterpiece
I loved this game back in the day. Watching this playthrough unlocked a bunch of memories I had forgotten. I remember parts of every level, though I doubt I actually beat the game so I must have cheated or something haha
This was one that I definitely had a lot of fun with, despite its shortcomings. I thought that the scenes of Ethan dragging unconscious bodies into the stalls were the funniest.
AVGN was right at least once. he's pretty terrible at playing games but even a broken clock works twice a day.
The real challenge - go one video without saying vee-hickle
Avgn brought us all together on all the first time wtf moments in every game.
As I always say, critics are always wrong. I personally love Bubsy 3D (I'd give it a 9.5/10 and really recommend it although I reckon tank controls are not for everyone), and you know how critics treated THAT one...
Always give every game a chance, regardless of critic scores.
Had this one in high school. It was one of those games you knew was bad but still found enjoyment out of it
I loved this game as a kid! The last level using all your tools and being a new version of the first using them all was an awesome touch
I really loved this game growing up. Such a diverse set of levels in what could have easily been a cheap Goldeneye knockoff at that time.
I used to love this game. A friend of mine had it for the playstation and I'd always borrow it from him. And the new Hitman games also remind me of this
The games basically requires you to watch the movie to understand the plot.
32:12
“There was this woman who looked like she was ready to take on Mike Tyson.”
That made me laugh so much: z perfect delivery.
Two characters, actually - first was Rollin Hand, then The Amazing Paris (played by Leonard Nimoy in his first post-Spock role).
I played Mission Impossible growing up as a kid, loved it! Played through it multiple times. Hybrid Heaven & Winback are the best N64 games
Love the way you say helly-copters ❤ thab, you are a heckin hero. Please go back to saying “[rng determined number] what the HECK is that?”
For some reason the heck really completes the vibe just right 😅
There's definitely something funky with your True Number Generator! This is the third game in a row that is next to Mischief Makers!
Naming the easier difficulty "possible" is too funny!
I cant believe i actually beat and genuinely enjoyed playing this game As a kid
Play through would of been much easier if you actually used the map in the top right where it shows the enemies. You have to time your actions when they aren’t close and can’t just “run and gun” it.
Dang I played this game a lot when I was pretty young. I couldn't understand english back then so every mission was literally just trial and error. I loved it.
I loved this game as a kid but I could never beat it so I used a lot of cheat codes which made the game even more fun. Goofing around in levels and trying to find fun ways to fail missions was great.
Ah that's better.
Wait, so what is the reference about "AVGN was wrong?" ? Did I miss it in the vid?
Just he trashed this game in his vid and I thought it was pretty fun
This game is 100% worth going back and doing on the hardest difficulty, there are more objectives, and mabey another level?
you know how much of a gamer he is by the small amount of big name movies hes seen. i love it
10:30 Well, that bathroom system is clearly useless. Even NPCs casually walk into the wrong one.
The way thab says helicopter 😂
I had such a love / hate relationship with this game as a kid. Never got past the laser room just off frustration.
you make me want to play this game again for nostalgia purposes
I enjoyed this game as a kid for the most part, except for the level on the outside of the building and one other section. Biggest issue with the game is lack of ammunition for the guns which make certain areas super difficult.
Dev Rooms are so cool. I wish more games had them.
9:30 "oh my god I love this song!"
Got an instant thumbs up from me for that one
The Impossible level has tougher enemies, extra objectives, tricky obstacles, and beating all the stages in a mission in go gives you a cheat code.
I absolutely loved this game as a student. This for single player and Goldenpies for multi was all we needed for a summer.
I too loved Goldenpies as a child XD
I’ve been trying to watch this video for 2 days now before bed but I keep falling asleep. This is the day to finally finish it!
This is like an early hitman
Wow! Almost a hundred games beaten! This is a great series.
Man, I remember the CIA missions being absolutely torturous on Impossible difficulty as a kid. Honestly, without a guide, I probably wouldn't have finished. Still a fun game that I really enjoyed back in the day, though. Awesome to see it, you did a pretty good job finding nearly everything the game wanted you to figure out.
Great memories of this game. Young me was probably ready to smash the entire N64 on the floor with some of those levels
